Quotients of M-convex sets and M-convex functions
We unify the study of quotients of matroids, polymatroids, valuated matroids and strong maps of submodular functions in the framework of Murota's discrete convex analysis. As a main result, we compile a list of ten equivalent characterizations of quotients for M-convex sets, generalizing existing formulations for (poly)matroids and submodular functions. We also initiate the study of quotients of M-convex functions, constructing a hierarchy of four separate characterizations. Our investigations yield new insights into the fundamental operation of induction, as well as the structure of linking sets and linking functions, which are generalizations of linking systems and bimatroids.

A direct proof of well-definedness for the polymatroid Tutte polynomial
For a polymatroid $P$ over $[n]$, Bernardi, Kálmán and Postnikov [\emph{Adv. Math.} 402 (2022) 108355] introduced the polymatroid Tutte polynomial $\mathscr{T}_{P}$ relying on the order $1<2<\cdots<n$ of $[n]$, which generalizes the classical Tutte polynomial from matroids to polymatroids. They proved the independence of this order by the fact that $\mathscr{T}_{P}$ is equivalent to another polynomial that only depends on $P$. In this paper, similar to the Tutte's original proof of the well-definedness of the Tutte polynomial defined by the summation over all spanning trees using activities depending on the order of edges, we give a direct and elementary proof of the well-definedness of the polymatroid Tutte polynomial.
Polymatroids are to finite groups as matroids are to finite fields
Given a subgroup $\mathcal{H}$ of a product of finite groups $\mathcal{G} = \displaystyle\prod^n_{i=1} Γ_i$ and $b>1,$ we define a polymatroid $P(\mathcal{H},b).$ If all of the $Γ_i$ are isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z},$ $p$ a prime, and $b=p,$ then $P(\mathcal{H},b)$ is the usual matroid associated to any $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$-matrix whose row space equals $\mathcal{H}.$ In general, there are many ways in which the relationship between $P(\mathcal{H},b)$ and $\mathcal{H}$ mirrors that of the relationship between a matroid and a subspace of a finite vector space. These include representability by excluded minors, the Crapo-Rota critical theorem, the existence of a concrete algebraic object representing the polymatroid dual of $P(\mathcal{H},b),$ analogs of Greene's theorem and the MacWilliams identities when $\mathcal{H}$ is a group code over a nonabelian group, and a connection to the combinatorial Laplacian of a quotient space determined by $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{H}.$ We use the group Crapo-Rota critical theorem to demonstrate an extension to hypergraphs of the classical duality between proper colorings and nowhere-zero flows on graphs.

Self-adhesivity in lattices of abstract conditional independence models
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce an algebraic concept of the frame for abstract conditional independence (CI) models, together with basic operations with respect to which such a frame should be closed: copying and marginalization. Three standard examples of such frames are (discrete) probabilistic CI structures, semi-graphoids and structural semi-graphoids. We concentrate on those frames which are closed under the operation of set-theoretical intersection because, for these, the respective families of CI models are lattices. This allows one to apply the results from lattice theory and formal concept analysis to describe such families in terms of implications among CI statements. The central concept of this paper is that of self-adhesivity defined in algebraic terms, which is a combinatorial reflection of the self-adhesivity concept studied earlier in context of polymatroids and information theory. The generalization also leads to a self-adhesivity operator defined on the hyper-level of CI frames. We answer some of the questions related to this approach and raise other open questions. The core of the paper is in computations. The combinatorial approach to computation might overcome some memory and space limitation of software packages based on polyhedral geometry, in particular, if SAT solvers are utilized. We characterize some basic CI families over 4 variables in terms of canonical implications among CI statements. We apply our method in information-theoretical context to the task of entropic region demarcation over 5 variables.

The cyclic flats of $\mathcal{L}$-polymatroids
We consider structural properties of $\mathcal{L}$-polymatroids, especially those defined on a finite complemented modular lattice $\mathcal{L}$. We introduce a set of cover-weight axioms and establish a cryptomorphism between these axioms and the rank axioms of an $\mathcal{L}$-polymatroid. We introduce the notion of a cyclic flat of an $\mathcal{L}$-polymatroid and study properties of its lattice of cyclic flats. We show that the weighted lattice of cyclic flats of an $\mathcal{L}$-polymatroid $\mathcal{P}$, along with the atomic weights of $\mathcal{P}$, is sufficient to define its rank function on $\mathcal{L}$. In our main result, we characterize those weighted lattices $(\mathcal{Z},λ)$ such that $\mathcal{Z}\subseteq\mathcal{L}$ is the collection of cyclic flats of an $\mathcal{L}$-polymatroid.

Unbounded matroids
A matroid base polytope is a polytope in which each vertex has 0,1 coordinates and each edge is parallel to a difference of two coordinate vectors. Matroid base polytopes are described combinatorially by integral submodular functions on a boolean lattice, satisfying the unit increase property. We define a more general class of unbounded matroids, or U-matroids, by replacing the boolean lattice with an arbitrary distributive lattice. U-matroids thus serve as a combinatorial model for polyhedra that satisfy the vertex and edge conditions of matroid base polytopes, but may be unbounded. Like polymatroids, U-matroids generalize matroids and arise as a special case of submodular systems. We prove that every U-matroid admits a canonical largest extension to a matroid, which we call the generous extension; the analogous geometric statement is that every U-matroid base polyhedron contains a unique largest matroid base polytope. We show that the supports of vertices of a U-matroid base polyhedron span a shellable simplicial complex, and we characterize U-matroid basis systems in terms of shelling orders, generalizing Björner's and Gale's criteria for a simplicial complex to be a matroid independence complex. Finally, we present an application of our theory to subspace arrangements and show that the generous extension has a natural geometric interpretation in this setting.

The essential bound of a polymatroid and its applications to excluded minor problems
The singleton and doubleton minors of a polymatroid $ρ$ encode a surprising amount of information about the structural complexity of $ρ$. Given any polymatroid $ρ$, we can subtract from it a maximally-separated polymatroid, resulting in a $k$-polymatroid. We introduce a notion of boundedness for $ρ$ that corresponds to $k$. Our results provide an organized framework for thinking about polymatroid excluded minor problems. In particular, let $\mathcal{C}$ denote the minor-closed class of matroids characterized by excluding the uniform matroid $U_{2,b}$ and its dual $U_{b-2,b}$. We show that the list of excluded minors for the class of $k$-polymatroids whose $k$-natural matroids are in $\mathcal{C}$ is finite. We also investigate the more general case of excluding $U_{a,b}$ and its dual $U_{b-a,b}$.

Shortest paths on polymatroids and hypergraphic polytopes
Base polytopes of polymatroids, also known as generalized permutohedra, are polytopes whose edges are parallel to a vector of the form $\mathbf{e}_i - \mathbf{e}_j$. We consider the following computational problem: Given two vertices of a generalized permutohedron $P$, find a shortest path between them on the skeleton of $P$. This captures many known flip distance problems, such as computing the minimum number of exchanges between two spanning trees of a graph, the rotation distance between binary search trees, the flip distance between acyclic orientations of a graph, or rectangulations of a square. We prove that this problem is $NP$-hard, even when restricted to very simple polymatroids in $\mathbb{R}^n$ defined by $O(n)$ inequalities. Assuming $P\not= NP$, this rules out the existence of an efficient simplex pivoting rule that performs a minimum number of nondegenerate pivoting steps to an optimal solution of a linear program, even when the latter defines a polymatroid. We also prove that the shortest path problem is inapproximable when the polymatroid is specified via an evaluation oracle for a corresponding submodular function, strengthening a recent result by Ito et al. (ICALP'23). More precisely, we prove the $APX$-hardness of the shortest path problem when the polymatroid is a hypergraphic polytope, whose vertices are in bijection with acyclic orientations of a given hypergraph. The shortest path problem then amounts to computing the flip distance between two acyclic orientations of a hypergraph. On the positive side, we provide a polynomial-time approximation algorithm for the problem of computing the flip distance between two acyclic orientations of a hypergraph, where the approximation factor is the maximum codegree of the hypergraph. Our result implies an exact polynomial-time algorithm for the flip distance between two acyclic orientations of any linear hypergraph.

A deletion-contraction formula and monotonicity properties for the polymatroid Tutte polynomial
The Tutte polynomial is a crucial invariant of matroids. The polymatroid Tutte polynomial $\mathscr{T}_{P}(x,y)$, introduced by Bernardi et al., is an extension of the classical Tutte polynomial from matroids to polymatroids $P$. In this paper, we first obtain a deletion-contraction formula for $\mathscr{T}_{P}(x,y)$. Then we prove two natural monotonicity properties, for containment and for minors of the interior polynomial $x^{n}\mathscr{T}_{P}(x^{-1},1)$ and the exterior polynomial $y^{n}\mathscr{T}_{P}(1,y^{-1})$, for polymatroids $P$ over $[n]$. We show by a counter-example that these monotonicity properties do not extend to $\mathscr{T}_{P}(x,y)$. Using deletion-contraction, we obtain formulas for the coefficients of terms of degree $n-1$ in $\mathscr{T}_{P}(x,y)$. Finally, for all $k\geq 0$, we characterize hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}=(V,E)$ so that the coefficient of $y^{k}$ in the exterior polynomial of the associated polymatroid $P_{\mathcal{H}}$ attains its maximal value $\binom{|V|+k-2}{k}$.

Numerical characterization of the hard Lefschetz classes of dimension two
We study the numerical characterization of two dimensional hard Lefschetz classes given by the complete intersections of nef classes. In Shenfeld and van Handel's breakthrough work on the characterization of the extremals of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for convex polytopes, they proposed an open question on the algebraic analogue of the characterization. By taking further inspiration from our previous work with Shang on hard Lefschetz theorems for free line bundles, we formulate and refine the conjectural picture more precisely and settle the open question when the collection of nef classes is given by a rearrangement of supercriticality, which in particular includes the big nef collection as a special case. The main results enable us to refine some previous results and study the extremals of Hodge index inequality, and more importantly provide the first series of examples of hard Lefschetz classes of dimension two both in algebraic geometry and analytic geometry, in which one can allow nontrivial augmented base locus and thus drop the semi-ampleness or semi-positivity assumption. As a key ingredient of the numerical characterization, we establish a local Hodge index inequality for Lorentzian polynomials, which is the algebraic analogue of the local Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality obtained by Shenfeld-van Handel for convex polytopes. This result holds in broad contexts, e.g., it holds on a smooth projective variety, on a compact Kähler manifold and on a Lorentzian fan, which contains the Bergman fan of a matroid or polymatroid as a typical example.

A Note on Extension Properties and Representations of Matroids
We discuss several extension properties of matroids and polymatroids and their application as necessary conditions for the existence of different matroid representations, namely linear, folded linear, algebraic, and entropic representations. Iterations of those extension properties are checked for matroids on eight and nine elements by means of computer-aided explorations, finding in that way several new examples of non-linearly representable matroids. A special emphasis is made on sparse paving matroids on nine points containing the tic-tac-toe configuration. We present a new, more clear description of that family and we analyze extension properties on those matroids and their duals.

Recursive properties of the characteristic polynomial of weighted lattices
In this paper, we describe properties of the characteristic polynomial of a weighted lattice and show that it has a recursive description, which we use to obtain results on the critical exponent of $q$-polymatroids. We give a Critical Theorem for representable $q$-polymatroids and we provide a lower bound on the critical exponent. We show that $q$-polymatroids arising from certain families of rank-metric codes attain this lower bound.

Chain Tutte polynomials
The Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant are the universal deletion-contraction and valuative matroid and polymatroid invariants, respectively. There are only a handful of well known invariants (like the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials) between (in terms of fineness) the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. The aim of this study is to define a spectrum of generalized Tutte polynomials to fill the gap between the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. These polynomials are built by taking repeated convolution products of universal Tutte characters studied by Dupont, Fink, and Moci and using the framework of Ardila and Sanchez for studying valuative invariants. We develop foundational aspects of these polynomials by showing they are valuative on generalized permutahedra and present a generalized deletion-contraction formula. We apply these results on chain Tutte polynomials to obtain formulas for the Möbius polynomial, the opposite characteristic polynomial, a generalized Möbius polynomial, Ford's expected codimension of a matroid variety, and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant.
Hardness of Finding Combinatorial Shortest Paths on Graph Associahedra
We prove that the computation of a combinatorial shortest path between two vertices of a graph associahedron, introduced by Carr and Devadoss, is NP-hard. This resolves an open problem raised by Cardinal. A graph associahedron is a generalization of the well-known associahedron. The associahedron is obtained as the graph associahedron of a path. It is a tantalizing and important open problem in theoretical computer science whether the computation of a combinatorial shortest path between two vertices of the associahedron can be done in polynomial time, which is identical to the computation of the flip distance between two triangulations of a convex polygon, and the rotation distance between two rooted binary trees. Our result shows that a certain generalized approach to tackling this open problem is not promising. As a corollary of our theorem, we prove that the computation of a combinatorial shortest path between two vertices of a polymatroid base polytope cannot be done in polynomial time unless P = NP. Since a combinatorial shortest path on the matroid base polytope can be computed in polynomial time, our result reveals an unexpected contrast between matroids and polymatroids.

Intersection theoretic inequalities via Lorentzian polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We explore the applications of Lorentzian polynomials to the fields of algebraic geometry, analytic geometry and convex geometry. In particular, we establish a series of intersection theoretic inequalities, which we call rKT property, with respect to $m$-positive classes and Schur classes. We also study its convexity variants -- the geometric inequalities for $m$-convex functions on the sphere and convex bodies. Along the exploration, we prove that any finite subset on the closure of the cone generated by $m$-positive classes can be endowed with a polymatroid structure by a canonical numerical-dimension type function, extending our previous result for nef classes; and we prove Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for valuations of Schur type. We also establish various analogs of sumset estimates (Plünnecke-Ruzsa inequalities) from additive combinatorics in our contexts.

The excluded minors for $k$-polymatroids with binary $k$-natural matroids
If $\mathcal{C}$ is a minor-closed class of matroids, then the class $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}'_k$ of $k$-polymatroids whose $k$-natural matroids are in $\mathcal{C}$ is also minor-closed. We investigate the following question: When $\mathcal{C}$ is the class of binary matroids, what are the excluded minors for $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}'_k$? When $k = 1$, $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}'_1$ is simply the class of binary matroids, which has $U_{2,4}$ as its only excluded minor. Joseph E. Bonin and Kevin Long answered the question for $k = 2$ and found that the set of excluded minors for $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}'_2$ is infinite. We determine the sets of excluded minors for $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}'_k$ when $k \geq 3$ and find that they are finite. There are $12$ excluded minors for $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}'_3$ and when $k > 3$, there are $k+7$ excluded minors for $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}'_k$.

Intersection theory of polymatroids
Polymatroids are combinatorial abstractions of subspace arrangements in the same way that matroids are combinatorial abstractions of hyperplane arrangements. By introducing augmented Chow rings of polymatroids, modeled after augmented wonderful varieties of subspace arrangements, we generalize several algebro-geometric techniques developed in recent years to study matroids. We show that intersection numbers in the augmented Chow ring of a polymatroid are determined by a matching property known as the Hall--Rado condition, which is new even in the case of matroids.

Hard Lefschetz properties, complete intersections and numerical dimensions
We study the positivity of complete intersections of nef classes. We first give a sufficient and necessary characterization on the complete intersection classes which have hard Lefschetz property on a compact complex torus, equivalently, in the linear case. In turn, this provides us new kinds of cohomology classes which have Hodge-Riemann property or hard Lefschetz property on an arbitrary compact Kähler manifold. We also give a complete characterization on when the complete intersection classes are non-vanishing on an arbitrary compact Kähler manifold. Both characterizations are given by the numerical dimensions of various partial summations of the given nef classes. As an interesting byproduct, we show that the numerical dimension endows any finite set of nef classes with a loopless polymatroid structure.
