K-polynomials of multiplicity-free varieties
We describe the twisted $K$-polynomial of multiplicity-free varieties in a multiprojective setting. More precisely, for multiplicity-free varieties, we show that the support of the twisted $K$-polynomial is a generalized polymatroid. As applications, we show that the support of the Möbius function of a linear polymatroid is a generalized polymatroid, and we settle a conjecture of Monical, Tokcan and Yong regarding Grothendieck polynomials for the case of zero-one Schubert polynomials.

The natural matroid of an integer polymatroid
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
The natural matroid of an integer polymatroid was introduced to show that a simple construction of integer polymatroids from matroids yields all integer polymatroids. As we illustrate, the natural matroid can shed much more light on integer polymatroids. We focus on characterizations of integer polymatroids using their bases, their circuits, and their cyclic flats along with the rank of each cyclic flat and each element; we offer some new characterizations and insights into known characterizations.

The excluded minors for three classes of 2-polymatroids having special types of natural matroids
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
If $\mathcal{C}$ is a minor-closed class of matroids, the class $\mathcal{C}'$ of integer polymatroids whose natural matroids are in $\mathcal{C}$ is also minor closed, as is the class $\mathcal{C}'_k$ of $k$-polymatroids in $\mathcal{C}'$. We find the excluded minors for $\mathcal{C}'_2$ when $\mathcal{C}$ is (i) the class of binary matroids, (ii) the class of matroids with no $M(K_4)$-minor, and, combining those, (iii) the class of matroids whose connected components are cycle matroids of series-parallel networks. In each case the class $\mathcal{C}$ has finitely many excluded minors, but that is true of $\mathcal{C}'_2$ only in case (ii). We also introduce the $k$-natural matroid, a variant of the natural matroid for a $k$-polymatroid, and use it to prove that these classes of 2-polymatroids are closed under 2-duality.
The combinatorial structure of symmetric strongly shifted ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Symmetric strongly shifted ideals are a class of monomial ideals which come equipped with an action of the symmetric group and are analogous to the well-studied class of strongly stable monomial ideals. In this paper we focus on algebraic and combinatorial properties of symmetric strongly shifted ideals. On the algebraic side, we elucidate properties that pertain to behavior under ideal operations, primary decomposition, and the structure of their Rees algebra. On the combinatorial side, we develop a notion of partition Borel generators which leads to connections to discrete polymatroids, convex polytopes, and permutohedral toric varieties.

Underlying Flag Polymatroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a natural geometric relationship between matroids and underlying flag matroids by relating the geometry of the greedy algorithm to monotone path polytopes. This perspective allows us to generalize the construction of underlying flag matroids to polymatroids. We show that the polytopes associated to underlying flag polymatroid are simple by proving that they are normally equivalent to certain nestohedra. We use this to show that polymatroids realized by subspace arrangements give rise to smooth toric varieties in flag varieties and we interpret our construction in terms of toric quotients. We give various examples that illustrate the rich combinatorial structure of flag polymatroids. Finally, we study general monotone paths on polymatroid polytopes, that relate to the enumeration of certain Young tableaux.
The Bergman fan of a polymatroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the Bergman fan of a polymatroid and prove that the Chow ring of the Bergman fan is isomorphic to the Chow ring of the polymatroid. Using the Bergman fan, we establish the Kähler package for the Chow ring of the polymatroid, recovering and strengthening a result of Pagaria-Pezzoli.

On the polymatroid Tutte polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Tutte polynomial is a well-studied invariant of matroids. The polymatroid Tutte polynomial $\mathcal{J}_{P}(x,y)$, introduced by Bernardi et al., is an extension of the classical Tutte polynomial from matroids to polymatroids $P$. In this paper, we first prove that $\mathcal{J}_{P}(x,t)$ and $\mathcal{J}_{P}(t,y)$ are interpolating for any fixed real number $t\geq 1$, and then we study the coefficients of high-order terms in $\mathcal{J}_{P}(x,1)$ and $\mathcal{J}_{P}(1,y)$. These results generalize results on interior and exterior polynomials of hypergraphs.

Selfadhesivity in Gaussian conditional independence structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
Selfadhesivity is a property of entropic polymatroids which guarantees that the polymatroid can be glued to an identical copy of itself along arbitrary restrictions such that the two pieces are independent given the common restriction. We show that positive definite matrices satisfy this condition as well and examine consequences for Gaussian conditional independence structures. New axioms of Gaussian CI are obtained by applying selfadhesivity to the previously known axioms of structural semigraphoids and orientable gaussoids.

Lattice Minors and Eulerian Posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce posets of simple vertex labeled minors of graphs and a generalization to the level of polymatroids, collectively termed minor posets. We show that any minor poset is isomorphic to the face poset of a regular CW sphere, and in particular, is Eulerian. We establish cd-index inequalities induced by strong maps, a tight upper bound for cd-indices of minor posets and a tight lower bound for cd-indices of minor posets arising from lattices of maximal length.

Finding Hall blockers by matrix scaling
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a given nonnegative matrix $A=(A_{ij})$, the matrix scaling problem asks whether $A$ can be scaled to a doubly stochastic matrix $D_1AD_2$ for some positive diagonal matrices $D_1,D_2$.The Sinkhorn algorithm is a simple iterative algorithm, which repeats row-normalization $A_{ij} \leftarrow A_{ij}/\sum_{j}A_{ij}$ and column-normalization $A_{ij} \leftarrow A_{ij}/\sum_{i}A_{ij}$ alternatively. By this algorithm, $A$ converges to a doubly stochastic matrix in limit if and only if the bipartite graph associated with $A$ has a perfect matching. This property can decide the existence of a perfect matching in a given bipartite graph $G$, which is identified with the $0,1$-matrix $A_G$.Linial, Samorodnitsky, and Wigderson showed that $O(n^2 \log n)$ iterations for $A_G$ decide whether $G$ has a perfect matching. Here $n$ is the number of vertices in one of the color classes of $G$. In this paper, we show an extension of this result:If $G$ has no perfect matching, then a polynomial number of the Sinkhorn iterations identifies a Hall blocker -- a vertex subset $X$ having neighbors $Γ(X)$ with $|X| > |Γ(X)|$. Specifically, we show that $O(n^2 \log n)$ iterations can identify one Hall blocker, and that further polynomial iterations can also identify all parametric Hall blockers $X$ of maximizing $(1-λ) |X| - λ|Γ(X)|$ for $λ\in [0,1]$.The former result is based on an interpretation of the Sinkhorn algorithm as alternating minimization for geometric programming. The latter is on an interpretation as alternating minimization for KL-divergence (Csiszár and Tusnády 1984, Gietl and Reffel 2013) and its limiting behavior for a nonscalable matrix (Aas 2014). We also relate the Sinkhorn limit with parametric network flow, principal partition of polymatroids, and the Dulmage-Mendelsohn decomposition of a bipartite graph.

Lattice points in slices of prisms
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 77 (2025) 1013-1040 • View PublicationBIB
We conduct a systematic study of the Ehrhart theory of certain slices of rectangular prisms. Our polytopes are generalizations of the hypersimplex and are contained in the larger class of polypositroids introduced by Lam and Postnikov; moreover, they coincide with polymatroids satisfying the strong exchange property up to an affinity. We give a combinatorial formula for all the Ehrhart coefficients in terms of the number of weighted permutations satisfying certain compatibility properties. This result proves that all these polytopes are Ehrhart positive. Additionally, via an extension of a result by Early and Kim, we give a combinatorial interpretation for all the coefficients of the $h^*$-polynomial. All of our results provide a combinatorial understanding of the Hilbert functions and the $h$-vectors of all algebras of Veronese type, a problem that had remained elusive up to this point. A variety of applications are discussed, including expressions for the volumes of these slices of prisms as weighted combinations of Eulerian numbers; some extensions of Laplace's result on the combinatorial interpretation of the volume of the hypersimplex; a multivariate generalization of the flag Eulerian numbers and refinements; and a short proof of the Ehrhart positivity of the independence polytope of all uniform matroids.

Decreasing Minimization on Base-Polyhedra: Relation Between Discrete and Continuous Cases
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is concerned with the relationship between the discrete and the continuous decreasing minimization problem on base-polyhedra. The continuous version (under the name of lexicographically optimal base of a polymatroid) was solved by Fujishige in 1980, with subsequent elaborations described in his book (1991). The discrete counterpart of the dec-min problem (concerning M-convex sets) was settled only recently by the present authors, with a strongly polynomial algorithm to compute not only a single decreasing minimal element but also the matroidal structure of all decreasing minimal elements and the dual object called the canonical partition. The objective of this paper is to offer a complete picture on the relationship between the continuous and discrete dec-min problems on base-polyhedra by establishing novel technical results and integrating known results. In particular, we derive proximity results, asserting the geometric closeness of the decreasingly minimal elements in the continuous and discrete cases, by revealing the relation between the principal partition and the canonical partition. We also describe decomposition-type algorithms for the discrete case following the approach of Fujishige and Groenevelt.
The Polyhedral Geometry of Pivot Rules and Monotone Paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the analysis of the performance of the simplex method we study the behavior of families of pivot rules of linear programs. We introduce normalized-weight pivot rules which are fundamental for the following reasons: First, they are memory-less, in the sense that the pivots are governed by local information encoded by an arborescence. Second, many of the most used pivot rules belong to that class, and we show this subclass is critical for understanding the complexity of all pivot rules. Finally, normalized-weight pivot rules can be parametrized in a natural continuous manner. We show the existence of two polytopes, the pivot rule polytopes and the neighbotopes, that capture the behavior of normalized-weight pivot rules on polytopes and linear programs. We explain their face structure in terms of multi-arborescences. We compute upper bounds on the number of coherent arborescences, that is, vertices of our polytopes. Beyond optimization, our constructions provide new perspectives on classical geometric combinatorics. We introduce a normalized-weight pivot rule, we call the max-slope pivot rule which generalizes the shadow-vertex pivot rule. The corresponding pivot rule polytopes and neighbotopes refine monotone path polytopes of Billera--Sturmfels. Moreover special cases of our polytopes yield permutahedra, associahedra, and multiplihedra. For the greatest improvement pivot rules we draw connections to sweep polytopes and polymatroids.

Polymatroids, closure operators and lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the closure operators of polymatroids from a lattice theoretic point of view. We show that polymatroid closure operators relate to lattices enriched with a generating set in the same way that matroids relate to geometric lattices. Through this relation we define a notion of minors for lattices enriched with a generating set. For the lattice of flats of a graphic matroid, the minors of the lattice are shown to correspond to simple minors of the graph when the vertices are labeled and the edges unlabeled. This correspondence is generalized to all polymatroids.

Note on the Polyhedral Description of the Minkowski Sum of Two L-convex Sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
L-convex sets are one of the most fundamental concepts in discrete convex analysis. Furthermore, the Minkowski sum of two L-convex sets, called L2-convex sets, is an intriguing object that is closely related to polymatroid intersection. This paper reveals the polyhedral description of an L2-convex set, together with the observation that the convex hull of an L2-convex set is a box-TDI polyhedron. Two different proofs are given for the polyhedral description. The first is a structural short proof, relying on the conjugacy theorem in discrete convex analysis, and the second is a direct algebraic proof, based on Fourier-Motzkin elimination. The obtained results admit natural graph representations. Implications of the obtained results in discrete convex analysis are also discussed.

Log-concave poset inequalities
Published in Journal of Association for Mathematical Research, vol. 2, issue 1 (2024), 53--153 • View PublicationBIB
We study combinatorial inequalities for various classes of set systems: matroids, polymatroids, poset antimatroids, and interval greedoids. We prove log-concavity inequalities for counting certain weighted feasible words, which generalize and extend several previous results establishing Mason conjectures for the numbers of independent sets of matroids. Notably, we prove matching equality conditions for both earlier inequalities and our extensions. In contrast with much of the previous work, our proofs are combinatorial and employ nothing but linear algebra. We use the language formulation of greedoids which allows a linear algebraic setup, which in turn can be analyzed recursively. The underlying non-commutative nature of matrices associated with greedoids allows us to proceed beyond polymatroids and prove the equality conditions. As further application of our tools, we rederive both Stanley's inequality on the number of certain linear extensions, and its equality conditions, which we then also extend to the weighted case.

The excluded minors for lattice path polymatroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find the excluded minors for the minor-closed class of lattice path polymatroids as a subclass of the minor-closed class of Boolean polymatroids. Like lattice path matroids and Boolean polymatroids, there are infinitely many excluded minors, but they fall into a small number of easily-described types.
Double Schubert polynomials do have saturated Newton polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that double Schubert polynomials have the Saturated Newton Polytope property. This settles a conjecture by Monical, Tokcan and Yong. Our ideas are motivated by the theory of multidegrees. We introduce a notion of standardization of ideals that enables us to study non-standard multigradings. This allows us to show that the support of the multidegree polynomial of each Cohen-Macaulay prime ideal, and in particular, that of each Schubert determinantal ideal is a discrete polymatroid.

Discrete Fenchel Duality for a Pair of Integrally Convex and Separable Convex Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Discrete Fenchel duality is one of the central issues in discrete convex analysis. The Fenchel-type min-max theorem for a pair of integer-valued M-natural-convex functions generalizes the min-max formulas for polymatroid intersection and valuated matroid intersection. In this paper we establish a Fenchel-type min-max formula for a pair of integer-valued integrally convex and separable convex functions. Integrally convex functions constitute a fundamental function class in discrete convex analysis, including both M-natural-convex functions and L-natural-convex functions, whereas separable convex functions are characterized as those functions which are both M-natural-convex and L-natural-convex. The theorem is proved by revealing a kind of box integrality of subgradients of an integer-valued integrally convex function. The proof is based on the Fourier-Motzkin elimination.

Hodge Theory for Polymatroids
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, 2023; • View PublicationBIB
We construct a Leray model for a discrete polymatroid with arbitrary building set and we prove a generalized Goresky-MacPherson formula. The first row of the model is the Chow ring of the polymatroid; we prove Poincaré duality, Hard Lefschetz, and Hodge-Riemann theorems for the Chow ring. Furthermore we provide a relative Lefschetz decomposition with respect to the deletion of an element.
