Spherical functions and Stolarski's invariance principle
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the previous paper [25], Stolarsky's invariance principle, known for point distributions on the Euclidean spheres [27], has been extended to the real, complex, and quaternionic projective spaces and the octonionic projective plane. Geometric features of these spaces as well as their models in terms of Jordan algebras have been used very essentially in the proof. In the present paper, we give a new pure analytic proof of the extended Stolarsky's invariance principle, relying on the theory of spherical functions on compact symmetric Riemannian manifolds of rank one.

Equivalence and automorphism groups of two families of maximum scattered linear sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Linear set in projective spaces over finite fields plays central roles in the study of blocking sets, semifields, rank-metric codes and etc. A linear set with the largest possible cardinality and the maximum rank is called maximum scattered. Despite two decades of study, there are only a few number of known maximum scattered linear sets in projective lines, including the family constructed by Csajbók, Marino, Polverino and Zanella 2018, and the family constructed by Csajbók, Marino, Zullo 2018 (also Marino, Montanucci, and Zullo 2020). This paper aims to solve the equivalence problem of the linear sets in each of these families and to determine their automorphism groups.
Self-dual matroids from canonical curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
Self-dual configurations of 2n points in a projective space of dimension n-1 were studied by Coble, Dolgachev-Ortland, and Eisenbud-Popescu. We examine the self-dual matroids and self-dual valuated matroids defined by such configurations, with a focus on those arising from hyperplane sections of canonical curves. These objects are parametrized by the self-dual Grassmannian and its tropicalization. We tabulate all self-dual matroids up to rank 5 and investigate their realization spaces. Following Bath, Mukai, and Petrakiev, we explore algorithms for recovering a curve from the configuration. A detailed analysis is given for self-dual matroids arising from graph curves.

Large $(k; r, s; n, q)$-sets in Projective Spaces
A $(k; r, s; n, q)$-set (short: $(r,s)$-set) of $\mathrm{PG}(n, q)$ is a set of points $X$ with $|X| = k$ such that no $s$-space contains more than $r$ points of $X$. We investigate the asymptotic size of $(r, s)$-sets for $n$ fixed and $q \rightarrow \infty$. In particular, we show the existence of $(3, 2)$-sets of size $(1+o(1)) q^{3/2}$ for $n=6$, $(4, 2)$-sets of size $(1+o(1)) q^{\frac{n-1}{2}}$, and $(9, 2)$-sets of size $(1+o(1)) q^2$ for $n=4$. We also generalize a bound by Rao from 1947 and show that an $(r,s)$-set has size at most $O(q^{\frac{n-e+1}{e}})$ if there exist integers $d,e \geq 2$ such that $s=d(e-1)$ and $r=de-1$.
Incidence matrices for the class $\mathcal{O}_6$ of lines external to the twisted cubic in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the structures of the plane-line and point-line incidence matrices of the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$ connected with orbits of planes, points, and lines under the stabilizer group of the twisted cubic. In the literature, lines are partitioned into classes, each of which is a union of line orbits. In this paper, for all $q$, even and odd, we determine the incidence matrices connected with a family of orbits of the class named $\mathcal{O}_6$. This class contains lines external to the twisted cubic. The considered family include an essential part of all $\mathcal{O}_6$ orbits, whose complete classification is an open problem.
Cones from maximum $h$-scattered linear sets and a stability result
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper mainly focuses on cones whose basis is a maximum $h$-scattered linear set. We start by investigating the intersection sizes of such cones with the hyperplanes. Then we analyze two constructions of point sets with few intersection sizes with the hyperplanes. In particular, the second one extends the construction of translation KM-arcs in projective spaces, having as part at infinity a cone with basis a maximum $h$-scattered linear set. As an instance of the second construction we obtain cylinders with a hyperoval as basis, which we call hypercylinders, for which we are able to provide a stability result. The main motivation for these problems is related to the connections with both Hamming and rank distance codes. Indeed, we are able to construct codes with few weights and to provide a stability result for the codes associated with hypercylinders.

Codes on Subgroups of Weighted Projective Tori
We obtain certain algebraic invariants relevant to study codes on subgroups of weighted projective tori inside an $n$-dimensional weighted projective space. As application, we compute all the main parameters of generalized toric codes on these subgroups of tori lying inside a weighted projective plane of the form $\Pp(1,1,a)$.

A polynomial construction of perfect sequence covering arrays
Published • View PublicationBIB
A PSCA$(v, t, λ)$ is a multiset of permutations of the $v$-element alphabet $\{0, \dots, v-1\}$ such that every sequence of $t$ distinct elements of the alphabet appears in the specified order in exactly $λ$ permutations. For $v \geq t$, let $g(v, t)$ be the smallest positive integer $λ$ such that a PSCA$(v, t, λ)$ exists. We present an explicit construction that proves $g(v,t) = O(v^{t(t-2)})$ for fixed $t \geq 4$. The method of construction involves taking a permutation representation of the group of projectivities of a suitable projective space of dimension $t - 2$ and deleting all but a certain number of symbols from each permutation. In the case that this space is a Desarguesian projective plane, we also show that there exists a permutation representation of the group of projectivities of the plane that covers the vast majority of 4-sequences of its points a fixed number of times.
Configurations of points in projective space and their projections
We call a set of points $Z\subset{\mathbb P}^{3}_{\mathbb C}$ an $(a,b)$-geproci set (for GEneral PROjection is a Complete Intersection) if its projection from a general point $P$ to a plane is a complete intersection of curves of degrees $a$ and $b$. Examples which we call grids have been known since 2011. The only nongrid nondegenerate examples previously known had $ab=12, 16, 20, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54$ or $60$. Here, for any $4 \leq a \leq b$, we construct nongrid nondegenerate $(a,b)$-geproci sets in a systematic way. We also show that the only such example with $a=3$ is a $(3,4)$-geproci set coming from the $D_4$ root system, and we describe the $D_4$ configuration in detail. We also consider the question of the equivalence (in various senses) of geproci sets, as well as which sets occur over the reals, and which cannot. We identify several additional examples of geproci sets with interesting properties. We also explore the relation between unexpected cones and geproci sets and introduce the notion of $d$-Weddle schemes arising from special projections of finite sets of points. This work initiates the exploration of new perspectives on classical areas of geometry. We formulate and discuss a range of open problems in the final chapter.
Orbits of the class $\mathcal{O}_6$ of lines external with respect to the twisted cubic in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$

In the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$, we consider orbits of lines under the stabilizer group of the twisted cubic. In the literature, lines of $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$ are partitioned into classes, each of which is a union of line orbits. We propose an approach to obtain orbits of the class named $\mathcal{O}_6$, whose complete classification is an open problem. For all even and odd $q$ we describe a family of orbits of $\mathcal{O}_6$ and their stabilizer groups. The orbits of this family include an essential part of all $\mathcal{O}_6$ orbits.

Birational geometry of generalized Hessenberg varieties and the generalized Shareshian-Wachs conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce generalized Hessenberg varieties and establish basic facts. We show that the Tymoczko action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties extends to generalized Hessenberg varieties and that natural morphisms among them preserve the action. By analyzing natural morphisms and birational maps among generalized Hessenberg varieties, we give an elementary proof of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture. Moreover we present a natural generalization of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture that involves generalized Hessenberg varieties and provide an elementary proof. As a byproduct, we propose a generalized Stanley-Stembridge conjecture for weighted graphs. Our investigation into the birational geometry of generalized Hessenberg varieties enables us to modify them into much simpler varieties like projective spaces or permutohedral varieties by explicit sequences of blowups or projective bundle maps. Using this, we provide two algorithms to compute the $S_n$-representations on the cohomology of generalized Hessenberg varieties. As an application, we compute representations on the low degree cohomology of some Hessenberg varieties.
Wonderful compactifications and rational curves with cyclic action
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the moduli space of rational curves with cyclic action, constructed in our previous work, is realizable as a wonderful compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a product of projective spaces. By proving a general result on such wonderful compactifications, we conclude that this moduli space is Chow-equivalent to an explicit toric variety (whose fan can be understood as a tropical version of the moduli space), from which a computation of its Chow ring follows.

On torus quotients of Schubert varieties in Orthogonal Grassmannian

Let $G=Spin(8n, \mathbb{C})(n\ge 1)$ and $T_{G}$ be a maximal torus of $G.$ Let $P^{α_{4n}}(\supset T_{G})$ be the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ corresponding to the simple root $α_{4n}.$ Let $X$ be a Schubert variety in $G/P^{α_{4n}}$ admitting semi-stable point with respect to the $T$-linearized very ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}(2ω_{4n}).$ Let $R=\bigoplus_{k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}}R_k,$ where $R_k=H^{0}(X, \mathcal{L}^{\otimes k}(2ω_{4n}))^{T_{G}}.$ In this article, we prove that for $n=1$ and $X=G/P^{α_4},$ the graded $\mathbb{C}$-algebra $R$ is generated by $R_1.$ As a consequence, we prove that the GIT quotient of $G/P^{α_{4}}$ is projectively normal with respect to the descent of the $T_{G}$-linearized very ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}(2ω_{4})$ and is isomorphic to the projective space $(\mathbb{P}^{2},\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{2}}(1))$ as a polarized variety. Further, we prove that $R$ is generated by $R_1$ and $R_2$ for some Schubert varieties in $G/P^{α_{4n}}$ (for $n \geq 2$). As a consequence, we prove that the GIT quotient of those Schubert varieties are projectively normal with respect to the descent of the $T_G$-linearized very ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}(4ω_{4n}).$ Moreover, for $G = Spin(2n,\mathbb{C})(n \ge 4)$ (respectively, $G=Sp(2n, \mathbb{C}) (n\ge 2)$) and a maximal torus $T_G$ of $G,$ we prove that the GIT quotient of $G/P^{α_{1}}$ is projectively normal with respect to the descent of the $T_G$-linearized very ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}(2ω_{1})$ and is isomorphic to the projective space $(\mathbb{P}^{n-2},\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{n-2}}(1))$ (respectively, $(\mathbb{P}^{n-1},\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{n-1}}(1))$ as a polarized variety.

Computing Vanishing Ideals for Toric Codes
Motivated by applications to the theory of error-correcting codes, we give methods for computing a generating set for the ideal generated by $β$-graded polynomials vanishing on certain subsets of a simplicial complete toric variety $X$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $β$ is a $d\times r$ matrix whose columns generate a subsemigroup $\mathbb{N}β$ of $\mathbb{N}^d$. We also give a method for computing the vanishing ideal of the set of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points of $X$. When $β=[w_1 \cdots w_r]$ is a row matrix corresponding to a numerical semigroup $\mathbb{N}β=\langle w_1,\dots,w_r \rangle$, $X$ is a weighted projective space and generators of the relevant vanishing ideal is given using generators of defining (toric) ideals of numerical semigroup rings corresponding to semigroups generated by subsets of $\{w_1,\dots,w_r\}$.

Projective tilings and full-rank perfect codes
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 91(10) 2023, 3293-3303 • View PublicationBIB
A tiling of a vector space $S$ is the pair $(U,V)$ of its subsets such that every vector in $S$ is uniquely represented as the sum of a vector from $U$ and a vector from $V$. A tiling is connected to a perfect codes if one of the sets, say $U$, is projective, i.e., the union of one-dimensional subspaces of $S$. A tiling $(U,V)$ is full-rank if the affine span of each of $U$, $V$ is $S$. For finite non-binary vector spaces of dimension at least $6$ (at least $10$), we construct full-rank tilings $(U,V)$ with projective $U$ (both $U$ and $V$, respectively). In particular, that construction gives a full-rank ternary $1$-perfect code of length $13$, solving a known problem. We also discuss the treatment of tilings with projective components as factorizations of projective spaces. An algorithm to count the number of caps in $\mathbb{P}^3(\mathbb{F}_q)$
An $n$-cap in $k$-dimensional projective space is a set of $n$ points so that no three lie on a line. In this note, we provide an algorithm to count the number of $n$-caps in $\mathbb{P}^3(\mathbb{F}_q)$, which follows from our recent paper [9]. We then give exact formulas for the number of $n$-caps when $n \le 7$. The formulas are polynomial in $q$ when $n \le 6$ and quasipolynomial in $q$ when $n = 7$.
Intrinsically projectively linked graphs
A graph is intrinsically projectively linked (IPL) if its every embedding in projective space contains a nonsplit link. Some minor-minimal IPL graphs have been found previously. We determine that no minor-minimal IPL graphs on 16 edges exists and identify new minor-minimal IPL graphs by applying $Δ-Y$ exchanges to $K_{7}-2e$. We prove that for a nonouter-projective-planar graph $G$, $G+\bar{K}_{2}$ is IPL and describe the necessary and sufficient conditions on a projective planar graph $G$ such that $G+\bar{K}_{2}$ is IPL. Lastly, we deduce conditions for $f(G + \bar{K_{2}})$ to have no nonsplit link, where $G$ is projective planar, $\bar{K_{2}} = \{w_{0},w_{1}\}$, and $f(G + \bar{K_{2}})$ is the embedding onto $\mathbb{R}P^{3}$ with $f(G)$ in $z=0$, $w_{0}$ above $z=0$, and $w_{1}$ below $z=0$ such that every edge connecting ${w_{0},w_{1}}$ to $G$ avoids the boundary of the 3-ball, whose antipodal points are identified to obtain projective space.

The chromatic index of finite projective spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
A line coloring of PG$(n,q)$, the $n$-dimensional projective space over GF$(q)$, is an assignment of colors to all lines of PG$(n,q)$ so that any two lines with the same color do not intersect. The chromatic index of PG$(n,q)$, denoted by $χ'(PG(n,q))$, is the least number of colors for which a coloring of PG$(n,q)$ exists. This paper translates the problem of determining the chromatic index of PG$(n,q)$ to the problem of examining the existences of PG$(3,q)$ and PG$(4,q)$ with certain properties. In particular, it is shown that for any odd integer $n$ and $q\in\{3,4,8,16\}$, $χ'(PG(n,q))=(q^n-1)/(q-1)$, which implies the existence of a parallelism of PG$(n,q)$ for any odd integer $n$ and $q\in\{3,4,8,16\}$.

The Projectivization Matroid of a $q$-Matroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate the relation between a $q$-matroid and its associated matroid called the projectivization matroid. The latter arises by projectivizing the groundspace of the $q$-matroid and considering the projective space as the groundset of the associated matroid on which is defined a rank function compatible with that of the $q$-matroid. We show that the projectivization map is a functor from categories of $q$-matroids to categories of matroids, which allows to prove new results about maps of $q$-matroids. We furthermore show the characteristic polynomial of a $q$-matroid is equal to that of the projectivization matroid. We use this relation to establish a recursive formula for the characteristic polynomial of a $q$-matroid in terms of the characteristic polynomial of its minors. Finally we use the projectivization matroid to prove a $q$-analogue of the critical theorem in terms of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear rank metric codes and $q$-matroids.
