Enumeration of simple random walks and tridiagonal matrices
Published in J.Phys. A35 (2002) 1125-1146 • View PublicationBIB
We present some old and new results in the enumeration of random walks in one dimension, mostly developed in works of enumerative combinatorics. The relation between the trace of the $n$-th power of a tridiagonal matrix and the enumeration of weighted paths of $n$ steps allows an easier combinatorial enumeration of the paths. It also seems promising for the theory of tridiagonal random matrices .

On the mixing time of simple random walk on the super critical percolation cluster
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the robustness under perturbations of mixing times, by studying mixing times of random walks in percolation clusters inside boxes in $\Z^d$. We show that for $d \geq 2$ and $p > p_c(\Z^d)$, the mixing time of simple random walk on the largest cluster inside $\{-n,...,n\}^d$ is $Θ(n^2)$ - thus the mixing time is robust up to constant factor.

Semigroups, rings, and Markov chains

We analyze random walks on a class of semigroups called ``left-regular bands''. These walks include the hyperplane chamber walks of Bidigare, Hanlon, and Rockmore. Using methods of ring theory, we show that the transition matrices are diagonalizable and we calculate the eigenvalues and multiplicities. The methods lead to explicit formulas for the projections onto the eigenspaces. As examples of these semigroup walks, we construct a random walk on the maximal chains of any distributive lattice, as well as two random walks associated with any matroid. The examples include a q-analogue of the Tsetlin library. The multiplicities of the eigenvalues in the matroid walks are ``generalized derangement numbers'', which may be of independent interest.

The cover time, the blanket time, and the Matthews bound
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cover time C of a graph G is the expected time for a random walk starting from the worst vertex to cover all vertices in G. Similarly, the blanket time B is the expected time to visit all vertices within a constant factor of number of times suggested by the stationary distribution. (Our definition will be slightly stronger than this.) Obviously, all vertices are covered when the graph is blanketed, and hence C <= B. The blanket time is introduced by Winkler and Zuckerman motivated by applications in Markov estimation and distributed computing. They conjectured B =O(C) and proved B=O(C ln n ). In this paper, we introduce another parameter M motivated by Matthews' theorem and prove M/2 <= C <= B = O(( M ln ln n)^2). In particular, B = O(C (ln ln n)^2). The lower bound is still valid for the cover time C(π) starting from the stationary distribution. We also show that there is a polynomial time algorithm to approximate M within a factor of 2 and so does for C within a factor of O((ln ln n)^2), improving previous bound of O(ln n) of Matthews'.

Random walks and random permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A connection is made between the random turns model of vicious walkers and random permutations indexed by their increasing subsequences. Consequently the scaled distribution of the maximum displacements in a particular asymmeteric version of the model can be determined to be the same as the scaled distribution of the eigenvalues at the soft edge of the GUE. The scaling of the distribution gives the maximum mean displacement $μ$ after $t$ time steps as $μ= (2t)^{1/2}$ with standard deviation proportional to $μ^{1/3}$. The exponent 1/3 is typical of a large class of two-dimensional growth problems.

Semisimple orbits of Lie algebras and card shuffling on Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Random walk on the chambers of hyperplanes arrangements is used to define a family of card shuffling measures $H_{W,x}$ for a finite Coxeter group W and real $x \neq 0$. By algebraic group theory, there is a map from the semisimple orbits of the adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Choosing such a semisimple orbit uniformly at random thereby induces a probability measure on the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. For types A, B, and the identity conjugacy class of W for all types, it is proved that for q very good, this measure on conjugacy classes is equal to the measure arising from $H_{W,q}$.

Restricted random walks on a graph
Published in Ann. Combinatorics 3, 475-481 (1999) • View PublicationBIB
The problem of a restricted random walk on graphs which keeps track of the number of immediate reversal steps is considered by using a transfer matrix formulation. A closed-form expression is obtained for the generating function of the number of n-step walks with r reversal steps for walks on any graph. In the case of graphs of a uniform valence, we show that our result has a probabilistic meaning, and deduce explicit expressions for the generating function in terms of the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix. Applications to periodic lattices and the complete graph are given.

Descent algebras, hyperplane arrangements, and shuffling cards
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two notions of riffle shuffling on finite Coxeter groups are given: one using Solomon's descent algebra and another using random walk on chambers of hyperplane arrangements. These coincide for types $A$,$B$,$C$, $H_3$, and rank two groups. Both notions have the same, simple eigenvalues. The hyperplane definition is especially natural and satisfies a positivity property when $W$ is crystallographic and the relevant parameter is a good prime. The hyperplane viewpoint suggests interesting connections with Lie theory and leads to a notion of riffle shuffling for arbitrary real hyperplane arrangements and oriented matroids. Connections with Cellini's descent algebra are given.
