Connector-Breaker games on random boards
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 28(3) (2021), #P3.10 • View PublicationBIB
By now, the Maker-Breaker connectivity game on a complete graph $K_n$ or on a random graph $G\sim G_{n,p}$ is well studied. Recently, London and Pluhár suggested a variant in which Maker always needs to choose her edges in such a way that her graph stays connected. By their results it follows that for this connected version of the game, the threshold bias on $K_n$ and the threshold probability on $G\sim G_{n,p}$ for winning the game drastically differ from the corresponding values for the usual Maker-Breaker version, assuming Maker's bias to be $1$. However, they observed that the threshold biases of both versions played on $K_n$ are still of the same order if instead Maker is allowed to claim two edges in every round. Naturally, this made London and Pluhár ask whether a similar phenomenon can be observed when a $(2:2)$ game is played on $G_{n,p}$. We prove that this is not the case, and determine the threshold probability for winning this game to be of size $n^{-2/3+o(1)}$.

Parallel multilevel constructions for constant dimension codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Constant dimension codes (CDCs), as special subspace codes, have received a lot of attention due to their application in random network coding. This paper introduces a family of new codes, called rank metric codes with given ranks (GRMCs), to generalize the parallel construction in [Xu and Chen, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 64 (2018), 6315--6319] and the classic multilevel construction. A Singleton-like upper bound and a lower bound for GRMCs derived from Gabidulin codes are given. Via GRMCs, two effective constructions for CDCs are presented by combining the parallel construction and the multilevel construction. Many CDCs with larger size than the previously best known codes are given. The ratio between the new lower bound and the known upper bound for $(4δ,2δ,2δ)_q$-CDCs is calculated. It is greater than 0.99926 for any prime power $q$ and any $δ\geq 3$.
Successive shortest paths in complete graphs with random edge weights
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider a complete graph $K_n$ with edge weights drawn independently from a uniform distribution $U(0,1)$. The weight of the shortest (minimum-weight) path $P_1$ between two given vertices is known to be $\ln n / n$, asymptotically. Define a second-shortest path $P_2$ to be the shortest path edge-disjoint from $P_1$, and consider more generally the shortest path $P_k$ edge-disjoint from all earlier paths. We show that the cost $X_k$ of $P_k$ converges in probability to $2k/n+\ln n/n$ uniformly for all $k \leq n-1$. We show analogous results when the edge weights are drawn from an exponential distribution. The same results characterise the collectively cheapest $k$ edge-disjoint paths, i.e., a minimum-cost $k$-flow. We also obtain the expectation of $X_k$ conditioned on the existence of $P_k$.

The almost sure theory of finite metric spaces
Published in Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 53, Issue 6, December 2021, pp. 1740-1748 • View PublicationBIB
We establish an approximate zero-one law for sentences of continuous logic over finite metric spaces of diameter at most $1$. More precisely, we axiomatize a complete metric theory $T_{\mathrm{as}}$ such that, given any sentence $σ$ in the language of pure metric spaces and any $ε>0$, the probability that the difference of the value of $σ$ in a random metric space of size $n$ and the value of $σ$ in any model of $T_{\mathrm{as}}$ is less than $ε$ approaches $1$ as $n$ approaches infinity. We also establish some model-theoretic properties of the theory $T_{\mathrm{as}}$.

Counting Small Permutation Patterns
Published in Proceedings of the 2021 ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (SODA), 2288-2302, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
A sample of n generic points in the xy-plane defines a permutation that relates their ranks along the two axes. Every subset of k points similarly defines a pattern, which occurs in that permutation. The number of occurrences of small patterns in a large permutation arises in many areas, including nonparametric statistics. It is therefore desirable to count them more efficiently than the straightforward ~O(n^k) time algorithm. This work proposes new algorithms for counting patterns. We show that all patterns of order 2 and 3, as well as eight patterns of order 4, can be counted in nearly linear time. To that end, we develop an algebraic framework that we call corner tree formulas. Our approach generalizes the existing methods and allows a systematic study of their scope. Using the machinery of corner trees, we find twenty-three independent linear combinations of order-4 patterns, that can be computed in time ~O(n). We also describe an algorithm that counts one of the remaining 4-patterns, and hence all 4-patterns, in time ~O(n^(3/2)). As a practical application, we provide a nearly linear time computation of a statistic by Yanagimoto (1970), Bergsma and Dassios (2010). This statistic yields a natural and strongly consistent variant of Hoeffding's test for independence of X and Y, given a random sample as above. This improves upon the so far most efficient ~O(n^2) algorithm.

Multilateration of Random Networks with Community Structure
The minimal number of nodes required to multilaterate a network endowed with geodesic distance (i.e., to uniquely identify all nodes based on shortest path distances to the selected nodes) is called its metric dimension. This quantity is related to a useful technique for embedding graphs in low-dimensional Euclidean spaces and representing the nodes of a graph numerically for downstream analyses such as vertex classification via machine learning. While metric dimension has been studied for many kinds of graphs, its behavior on the Stochastic Block Model (SBM) ensemble has not. The simple community structure of graphs in this ensemble make them interesting in a variety of contexts. Here we derive probabilistic bounds for the metric dimension of random graphs generated according to the SBM, and describe algorithms of varying complexity to find---with high probability---subsets of nodes for multilateration. Our methods are tested on SBM ensembles with parameters extracted from real-world networks. We show that our methods scale well with increasing network size as compared to the state-of-the-art Information Content Heuristic algorithm for metric dimension approximation.

Analyzing connectivity of heterogeneous secure sensor networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We analyze connectivity of a heterogeneous secure sensor network that uses key predistribution to protect communications between sensors. For this network on a set $\mathcal{V}_n$ of $n$ sensors, suppose there is a pool $\mathcal{P}_n$ consisting of $P_n$ distinct keys. The $n$ sensors in $\mathcal{V}_n$ are divided into $m$ groups $\mathcal{A}_1, \mathcal{A}_2, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_m$. Each sensor $v$ is independently assigned to exactly a group according to the probability distribution with $\mathbb{P}[v \in \mathcal{A}_i]= a_i$ for $i=1,2,\ldots,m$, where $\sum_{i=1}^{m}a_i = 1$. Afterwards, each sensor in group $\mathcal{A}_i$ independently chooses $K_{i,n}$ keys uniformly at random from the key pool $\mathcal{P}_n$, where $K_{1,n} \leq K_{2,n}\leq \ldots \leq K_{m,n}$. Finally, any two sensors in $\mathcal{V}_n$ establish a secure link in between if and only if they have at least one key in common. We present critical conditions for connectivity of this heterogeneous secure sensor network. The result provides useful guidelines for the design of secure sensor networks. This paper improves the seminal work [1] (IEEE Transactions on Information Theory 2016) of Ya{ğ}an on connectivity in several aspects (omitted due to arxiv abstract's character limitation; see the paper for details).

A limit theorem for the $1$st Betti number of layer-$1$ subgraphs in random graphs
We initiate the study of local topology of random graphs. The high level goal is to characterize local "motifs" in graphs. In this paper, we consider what we call the layer-$r$ subgraphs for an input graph $G = (V,E)$: Specifically, the layer-$r$ subgraph at vertex $u \in V$, denoted by $G_{u; r}$, is the induced subgraph of $G$ over vertex set $Δ_{u}^{r}:= \left\{v \in V: d_G(u,v) = r \right\}$, where $d_G$ is shortest-path distance in $G$. Viewing a graph as a 1-dimensional simplicial complex, we then aim to study the $1$st Betti number of such subgraphs. Our main result is that the $1$st Betti number of layer-$1$ subgraphs in Erdős--Rényi random graphs $G(n,p)$ satisfies a central limit theorem.

Normal limit laws for vertex degrees in randomly grown hooking networks and bipolar networks
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27(2), (2020), P2.45 • View PublicationBIB
We consider two types of random networks grown in blocks. Hooking networks are grown from a set of graphs as blocks, each with a labelled vertex called a hook. At each step in the growth of the network, a vertex called a latch is chosen from the hooking network and a copy of one of the blocks is attached by fusing its hook with the latch. Bipolar networks are grown from a set of directed graphs as blocks, each with a single source and a single sink. At each step in the growth of the network, an arc is chosen and is replaced with a copy of one of the blocks. Using Pólya urns, we prove normal limit laws for the degree distributions of both networks. We extend previous results by allowing for more than one block in the growth of the networks and by studying arbitrarily large degrees.

Random plane partitions and corner distributions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We explore some probabilistic applications arising in connections with $K$-theoretic symmetric functions. For instance, we determine certain corner distributions of random lozenge tilings and plane partitions. We also introduce some distributions that are naturally related to the corner growth model. Our main tools are dual symmetric Grothendieck polynomials and normalized Schur functions.
Thresholds versus fractional expectation-thresholds
Published • View PublicationBIB
Proving a conjecture of Talagrand, a fractional version of the 'expectation-threshold' conjecture of Kalai and the second author, we show for any increasing family $F$ on a finite set $X$ that $p_c (F) =O( q_f (F) \log \ell(F))$, where $p_c(F)$ and $q_f(F)$ are the threshold and 'fractional expectation-threshold' of $F$, and $\ell(F)$ is the largest size of a minimal member of $F$. This easily implies several heretofore difficult results and conjectures in probabilistic combinatorics, including thresholds for perfect hypergraph matchings (Johansson--Kahn--Vu), bounded-degree spanning trees (Montgomery), and bounded-degree spanning graphs (new). We also resolve (and vastly extend) the 'axial' version of the random multi-dimensional assignment problem (earlier considered by Martin--Mézard--Rivoire and Frieze--Sorkin). Our approach builds on a recent breakthrough of Alweiss, Lovett, Wu and Zhang on the Erdős--Rado 'Sunflower Conjecture'.

On the moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of Haar distributed symplectic and orthogonal matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish formulae for the moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of random orthogonal and symplectic matrices in terms of certain lattice point count problems. This allows us to establish asymptotic formulae when the matrix-size tends to infinity in terms of the volumes of certain regions involving continuous Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with constraints. The results we find differ from those in the unitary case considered previously

Hamiltonicity of random graphs in the stochastic block model
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the Hamiltonicity of the following model of a random graph. Suppose that we partition [n] into V_1,V_2,...,V_k and add edge {x,y} to our graph with probability p if there exists i such that x,y\in V_i. Otherwise, we add the edge with probbability q. We denote this model by G(n, p,q) and give tight results for Hamiltonicity, including a critical window analysis, under various conditions.
Dynamical Models for Random Simplicial Complexes

We study a general model of random dynamical simplicial complexes and derive a formula for the asymptotic degree distribution. This asymptotic formula encompasses results for a number of existing models, including random Apollonian networks and the weighted random recursive tree. It also confirms results on the scale-free nature of Complex Quantum Network Manifolds in dimensions $d > 2$, and special types of Network Geometry with Flavour models studied in the physics literature by Bianconi, Rahmede [$\mathit{Sci. Rep.} \; \mathbf{5},\text{ 13979 (2015) and }\mathit{Phys. Rev. E} \; \mathbf{93},\text{ 032315 (2016)}$].

Homotopy Types of Random Cubical Complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the topology of a random cubical complex associated to Bernoulli site percolation on a cubical grid. We begin by establishing a limit law for homotopy types. More precisely, looking within an expanding window, we define a sequence of normalized counting measures (counting connected components according to homotopy type), and we show that this sequence of random probability measures converges in probability to a deterministic probability measure. We then investigate the dependence of the limiting homotopy measure on the coloring probability $p$, and our results show a qualitative change in the homotopy measure as $p$ crosses the percolation threshold $p=p_c$. Specializing to the case of $d=2$ dimensions, we also present empirical results that raise further questions on the $p$-dependence of the limiting homotopy measure.
Deviation probabilities for arithmetic progressions and other regular discrete structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let the random variable $X\, :=\, e(\mathcal{H}[B])$ count the number of edges of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ induced by a random $m$ element subset $B$ of its vertex set. Focussing on the case that $\mathcal{H}$ satisfies some regularity condition we prove bounds on the probability that $X$ is far from its mean. It is possible to apply these results to discrete structures such as the set of $k$-term arithmetic progressions in the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_N$. Furthermore, we show that our main theorem is essentially best possible and we deduce results for the case $B\sim B_p$ is generated by including each vertex independently with probability $p$.

On the Dependence of the Component Counting Process of a Discrete Uniform Random Variable
Published • View PublicationBIB
We are concerned with the general problem of proving the existence of joint distributions of two discrete random variables $M$ and $N$ subject to infinitely many constraints of the form $\mathbb{P}\left(M=i,N=j\right)=0$. In particular, the variable $M$ has a countably infinite range and the other variable $N$ is uniformly distributed with finite range. The constraints placed on the joint distribution will require, for some $j$'s in the range of $N$, $p\left(i,j\right)=0$ for infinitely many values of $i$ in the range of $M$. To prove the existence of such a joint distribution, we provide a technique that furnishes the existence of an $\infty\times n$ matrix consisting of non-negative real numbers whose row and column sums are known, with zeros in infinitely many pre-specified locations.
Localization Game for Random Graphs

We consider the localization game played on graphs in which a cop tries to determine the exact location of an invisible robber by exploiting distance probes. The corresponding graph parameter $ζ(G)$ for a given graph $G$ is called the localization number. In this paper, we improve the bounds for dense random graphs determining an asymptotic behaviour of $ζ(G)$. Moreover, we extend the argument to sparse graphs.

Some explorations on two conjectures about Rademacher sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we explore two conjectures about Rademacher sequences. Let $(ε_i)$ be a Rademacher sequence, i.e., a sequence of independent $\{-1,1\}$-valued symmetric random variables. Set $S_n=a_1ε_1+\cdots+a_nε_n$ for $a=(a_1,\dots,a_n)\in \mathbb{R}^n$. The first conjecture says that $P\ (\ |S_n\ |\leq \|a\|\ )\geq\frac{1}{2}$ for all $a\in \mathbb{R}^n$ and $n\in \mathbb{N}$. The second conjecture says that $P\ (\ |S_n\ |\geq\|a\|\ )\geq \frac{7}{32}$ for all $a\in \mathbb{R}^n$ and $n\in \mathbb{N}$. Regarding the first conjecture, we present several new equivalent formulations. These include a topological view, a combinatorial version and a strengthened version of the conjecture. Regarding the second conjecture, we prove that it holds true when $n\leq 7$.

A non-uniform Littlewood-Offord inequality
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider a sum $S_n=v_i\varepsilon_1+\cdots+v_n\varepsilon_{n}$, where $(v_i)^{n}_{i=1}$ are non-zero vectors in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and $(\varepsilon_i)^{n}_{i=1}$ are independent Rademacher random variables (i.e., $~{\mathbb{P}(\varepsilon_{i}=\pm 1)=1/2}$). The classical Littlewood-Offord problem asks for the best possible upper bound for $~{\sup_{x}\mathbb{P}(S_n = x)}$. In this paper we consider a non-uniform version of this problem. Namely, we obtain the optimal bound for $\mathbb{P}(S_n = x)$ in terms of the length of the vector $x\in \mathbb{R}^d$.
