Linear embeddings of random complexes
For $X \sim X(n; 1, n^{-α_1}, n^{-α_2}, ...)$ in the multiparameter random simplicial complex model we establish necessary and sufficient strict inequalities on the $α_i$'s to linearly embed the complex into $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$.

Generating Functions for Asymmetric Random Walk Processes With Double Absorbing Barriers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generating functions for asymmetric step-size paths restricted by two absorbing barriers are derived. The method begins by applying the Lagrange inversion formula to arbitrary powers of roots of the characteristic equation, that being a trinomial, which produces generating function as function (z) of the conditional probability of absorption of a particle, on a path restricted by two absorbing barriers. The exact enumeration of an asymmetric walk with two absorbing barriers is given.

Symmetries of Hypergraphs and Some Invariant Subspaces of Matrices Associated with Hypergraphs
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. (2025), Volume 726, 1 December 2025, Pages 328-358 • View PublicationBIB
Here, the structural symmetries of a hypergraph are represented through equivalence relations on the vertex set of the hypergraph. A matrix associated with the hypergraph may not reflect a specific structural symmetry. In the context of a given symmetry within a hypergraph, we investigate a collection of matrices that encapsulate information about the symmetry. Our investigation reveals that certain structural symmetries in a hypergraph manifest observable effects on the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of designated matrices associated with the hypergraph. We identify specific matrices where the invariance is a consequence of symmetries present in the hypergraph. These invariant subspaces elucidate analogous behaviours observed in certain clusters of vertices during random walks and other dynamical processes on the hypergraph.
Twin-width of random graphs
Published in Random Structures Algorithms, 65(4):794-831, December 2024 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the twin-width of the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$. We unveil a surprising behavior of this parameter by showing the existence of a constant $p^*\approx 0.4$ such that with high probability, when $p^*\le p\le 1-p^*$, the twin-width is asymptotically $2p(1-p)n$, whereas, when $0<p<p^*$ or $1>p>1-p^*$, the twin-width is significantly higher than $2p(1-p)n$. In addition, we show that the twin-width of $G(n,1/2)$ is concentrated around $n/2 - \sqrt{3n \log n}/2$ within an interval of length $o(\sqrt{n\log n})$. For the sparse random graph, we show that with high probability, the twin-width of $G(n,p)$ is $Θ(n\sqrt{p})$ when $(726\ln n)/n\leq p\leq1/2$.

Random Polynomial Graphs for Random Turán Problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bukh and Conlon used random polynomial graphs to give effective lower bounds on $\mathrm{ex}(n,\mathcal{T}^\ell)$, where $\mathcal{T}^\ell$ is the $\ell$th power of a balanced rooted tree $T$. We extend their result to give effective lower bounds on $\mathrm{ex}(G_{n,p},\mathcal{T}^\ell)$, which is the maximum number of edges in a $\mathcal{T}^\ell$-free subgraph of the random graph $G_{n,p}$. Analogous bounds for generalized Turán numbers in random graphs are also proven.

The number of correct guesses with partial feedback
We consider the following game. A deck with $m$ copies of each of $n$ distinct cards is shuffled in a perfectly random way. The Guesser sequentially guesses the card from top to bottom. After each guess, the Guesser is informed whether the guess is correct. The goal is to maximize the expected number of correct guesses. We prove that, if $n= Ω(\sqrt{m})$, then at most $m+O(\sqrt{m})$ cards can be guessed correctly. Our result matches a lower bound of the maximal expected payoff by Diaconis, Graham and Spiro when $n=Ω(m)$.

A random coloring process gives improved bounds for the Erdős-Gyárfás problem on generalized Ramsey numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Erdős-Gyárfás number $f(n, p, q)$ is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ so that all of its $p$-clique spans at least $q$ colors. In this paper we improve the best known upper bound on $f(n, p, q)$ for many fixed values of $p, q$ and large $n$. Our proof uses a randomized coloring process, which we analyze using the so-called differential equation method to establish dynamic concentration.
Minors, connectivity, and diameter in randomly perturbed sparse graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extremal properties of sparse graphs, randomly perturbed by the binomial random graph are considered. It is known that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ contains a complete minor of order $Ω(n/α(G))$. We prove that adding $ξn$ random edges, where $ξ> 0$ is arbitrarily small yet fixed, to an $n$-vertex graph $G$ satisfying $α(G) \leq ζ(ξ)n$ asymptotically almost surely results in a graph containing a complete minor of order $\tilde Ω\left( n/\sqrt{α(G)}\right)$; this result is tight up to the implicit logarithmic terms. For complete topological minors, we prove that there exists a constant $C>0$ such that adding $C n$ random edges to a graph $G$ satisfying $δ(G) = ω(1)$, asymptotically almost surely results in a graph containing a complete topological minor of order $\tilde Ω(\min\{δ(G),\sqrt{n}\})$; this result is tight up to the implicit logarithmic terms. Finally, extending results of Bohman, Frieze, Krivelevich, and Martin for the dense case, we analyse the asymptotic behaviour of the vertex-connectivity and the diameter of randomly perturbed sparse graphs.

Random Recursive Hypergraphs
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 56, 195001 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Random recursive hypergraphs grow by adding, at each step, a vertex and an edge formed by joining the new vertex to a randomly chosen existing edge. The model is parameter-free, and several characteristics of emerging hypergraphs admit neat expressions via harmonic numbers, Bernoulli numbers, Eulerian numbers, and Stirling numbers of the first kind. Natural deformations of random recursive hypergraphs give rise to fascinating models of growing random hypergraphs.
A lower bound for set-colouring Ramsey numbers
The set-colouring Ramsey number $R_{r,s}(k)$ is defined to be the minimum $n$ such that if each edge of the complete graph $K_n$ is assigned a set of $s$ colours from $\{1,\ldots,r\}$, then one of the colours contains a monochromatic clique of size $k$. The case $s = 1$ is the usual $r$-colour Ramsey number, and the case $s = r - 1$ was studied by Erdős, Hajnal and Rado in 1965, and by Erdős and Szemerédi in 1972. The first significant results for general $s$ were obtained only recently, by Conlon, Fox, He, Mubayi, Suk and Verstraëte, who showed that $R_{r,s}(k) = 2^{Θ(kr)}$ if $s/r$ is bounded away from $0$ and $1$. In the range $s = r - o(r)$, however, their upper and lower bounds diverge significantly. In this note we introduce a new (random) colouring, and use it to determine $R_{r,s}(k)$ up to polylogarithmic factors in the exponent for essentially all $r$, $s$ and $k$.

Determinantal random subgraphs
We define two families of determinantal random spanning subgraphs of a finite connected graph, one supported by acyclic spanning subgraphs (spanning forests) with fixed number of connected components, the other by connected spanning subgraphs with fixed number of independent cycles. Each family generalizes the uniform spanning tree and the generating functions of these probability measures generalize the classical Kirchhoff and Symanzik polynomials. We call Symanzik spanning forests the elements of the acyclic spanning subgraphs family, and single out a particular determinantal mixture of these, having as kernel a normalized Laplacian on $1$-forms, which we call the Laplacian spanning forest. Our proofs rely on a set of integral and real or complex (which we call geometric) multilinear identies involving cycles, coboundaries, and forests on graphs. We prove these identities using classical pieces of the algebraic topology of graphs and the exterior calculus applied to finite determinantal point processes, both of which we treat in a self-contained way. We emphasize the matroidal nature of our constructions, thereby showing how the above two families of random spanning subgraphs are dual to one another, as well as possible generalisations.

The partition function modulo 4
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is widely believed that the parity of the partition function $p(n)$ is ``random.'' Contrary to this expectation, in this note we prove the existence of infinitely many congruence relations modulo 4 among its values. For each square-free integer $1<D\equiv 23\pmod{24},$ we construct a weight 2 meromorphic modular form that is congruent modulo 4 to a certain twisted generating function for the numbers $p\big(\frac{Dm^2+1}{24}\big)\pmod 4$. We prove the existence of infinitely many linear dependence congruences modulo 4 among suitable sets of holomorphic normalizations of these series. These results rely on the theory of class numbers and Hilbert class polynomials, and {\it generalized twisted Borcherds products} developed by Bruinier and the author.

Tight concentration of star saturation number in random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For given graphs $F$ and $G$, the minimum number of edges in an inclusion-maximal $F$-free subgraph of $G$ is called the $F$-saturation number and denoted $\mathrm{sat}(G, F)$. For the star $F=K_{1,r}$, the asymptotics of $\mathrm{sat}(G(n,p),F)$ is known. We prove a sharper result: whp $\mathrm{sat}(G(n,p), K_{1,r})$ is concentrated in a set of 2 consecutive points.

Optimal thresholds for Latin squares, Steiner Triple Systems, and edge colorings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the threshold for the binomial random $3$-partite, $3$-uniform hypergraph $G^{3}((n,n,n),p)$ to contain a Latin square is $Θ(\log{n}/n)$. We also prove analogous results for Steiner triple systems and proper list edge-colorings of the complete (bipartite) graph with random lists. Our results answer several related questions of Johansson, Luria-Simkin, Casselgren-Häggkvist, Simkin, and Kang-Kelly-Kühn-Methuku-Osthus.

The one-sided cycle shuffles in the symmetric group algebra
Published in Shortened version in: Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 7 (2024) no. 2, pp. 275-326 • View PublicationBIB
We study a family of shuffling operators on the symmetric group $S_n$, which includes the top-to-random shuffle. The general shuffling scheme consists of removing one card at a time from the deck (according to some probability distribution) and re-inserting it at a (uniformly) random position further below. Rewritten in terms of the group algebra $\mathbb{R}[S_n]$, our shuffle corresponds to right multiplication by a linear combination of the elements \[t_i:=\text{cyc}_{i}+\text{cyc}_{i,i+1}+\text{cyc}_{i,i+1,i+2}+\cdots+\text{cyc}_{i,i+1,\ldots,n}\in \mathbb{R}[S_n]\] for all $i\in\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ (where $\text{cyc}_{j_1,j_2,\ldots,j_p}$ stands for a $p$-cycle). We compute the eigenvalues of these shuffling operators and of all their linear combinations. In particular, we show that the eigenvalues of right multiplication by a linear combination $λ_1t_1+λ_2t_2+\cdots+λ_nt_n$ are the numbers $λ_1m_{I,1}+λ_2m_{I,2}+\cdots+λ_nm_{I,n}$, where $I$ ranges over the subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n-1\}$ that contain no two consecutive integers; here $m_{I,i}$ are certain integers. We compute the multiplicities of these eigenvalues and show that if they are all distinct, the shuffling operator is diagonalizable. To this purpose, we show that the operators of right multiplication by $t_1,t_2,\ldots,t_n$ on $\mathbb{R}[S_n]$ are simultaneously triangularizable (via a combinatorially defined basis). The results stated here over $\mathbb{R}$ for convenience are actually stated and proved over an arbitrary commutative ring $\mathbf{k}$. We finish by describing a strong stationary time for the random-to-below shuffle, which is the shuffle in which the card that moves below is selected uniformly at random, and we give the waiting time for this event to happen.
Orthogonal realizations of random sign patterns and other applications of the SIPP
Published • View PublicationBIB
A sign pattern is an array with entries in $\{+,-,0\}$. A matrix $Q$ is row orthogonal if $QQ^T = I$. The Strong Inner Product Property (SIPP), introduced in [B.A.~Curtis and B.L.~Shader, Sign patterns of orthogonal matrices and the strong inner product property, Linear Algebra Appl. 592: 228--259, 2020], is an important tool when determining whether a sign pattern allows row orthogonality because it guarantees there is a nearby matrix with the same property, allowing zero entries to be perturbed to nonzero entries, while preserving the sign of every nonzero entry. This paper uses the SIPP to initiate the study of conditions under which random sign patterns allow row orthogonality with high probability. Building on prior work, $5\times n$ nowhere zero sign patterns that minimally allow orthogonality are determined. Conditions on zero entries in a sign pattern are established that guarantee any row orthogonal matrix with such a sign pattern has the SIPP.

The optimal edge-colouring threshold
Consider any dense r-regular quasirandom bipartite graph H with parts of size n and fix a set of r colours. Let L be a random list assignment where each colour is available for each edge of H with probability p. We show that the threshold probability for H to have a proper L-edge-colouring is p of order (log n)/n. This answers a question of Kang, Kelly, Kühn, Methuku and Osthus. We thus obtain the same threshold for Steiner Triple Systems and Latin squares; the latter answers a question of Johanssen from 2006.

Minimum algebraic connectivity and maximum diameter: Aldous--Fill and Guiduli--Mohar conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
Aldous and Fill (2002) conjectured that the maximum relaxation time for the random walk on a connected regular graph with $n$ vertices is $(1+o(1)) \frac{3n^{2}}{2π^{2}}$. A conjecture by Guiduli and Mohar (1996) predicts the structure of graphs whose algebraic connectivity $μ$ is the smallest among all connected graphs whose minimum degree $δ$ is a given $d$. We prove that this conjecture implies the Aldous--Fill conjecture for odd $d$. We pose another conjecture on the structure of $d$-regular graphs with minimum $μ$, and show that this also implies the Aldous--Fill conjecture for even $d$. In the literature, it has been noted empirically that graphs with small $μ$ tend to have a large diameter. In this regard, Guiduli (1996) asked if the cubic graphs with maximum diameter have algebraic connectivity smaller than all others. Motivated by these, we investigate the interplay between the graphs with maximum diameter and those with minimum algebraic connectivity. We show that the answer to Guiduli problem in its general form, that is for $d$-regular graphs for every $d\ge 3$ is negative. We aim to develop an asymptotic formulation of the problem. It is proven that $d$-regular graphs for $d\ge 5$ as well as graphs with $δ=d$ for $d\ge 4$ with asymptotically maximum diameter, do not necessarily exhibit the asymptotically smallest $μ$. We conjecture that $d$-regular graphs (or graphs with $δ=d$) that have asymptotically smallest $μ$, should have asymptotically maximum diameter. The above results rely heavily on our understanding of the structure as well as optimal estimation of the algebraic connectivity of nearly maximum-diameter graphs, from which the Aldous--Fill conjecture for this family of graphs also follows.
On the Size of Chromatic Delaunay Mosaics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a locally finite set $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ and a coloring $χ\colon A \to \{0,1,\ldots,s\}$, we introduce the chromatic Delaunay mosaic of $χ$, which is a Delaunay mosaic in $\mathbb{R}^{s+d}$ that represents how points of different colors mingle. Our main results are bounds on the size of the chromatic Delaunay mosaic, in which we assume that $d$ and $s$ are constants. For example, if $A$ is finite with $n = \#{A}$, and the coloring is random, then the chromatic Delaunay mosaic has $O(n^{\lceil{d/2}\rceil})$ cells in expectation. In contrast, for Delone sets and Poisson point processes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, the expected number of cells within a closed ball is only a constant times the number of points in this ball. Furthermore, in $\mathbb{R}^2$ all colorings of a dense set of $n$ points have chromatic Delaunay mosaics of size $O(n)$. This encourages the use of chromatic Delaunay mosaics in applications.
