A trace formula for the distribution of rational $G$-orbits in ramified covers, adapted to representation stability
A standard observation in algebraic geometry and number theory is that a ramified cover of an algebraic variety $\widetilde{X}\rightarrow X$ over a finite field $F_q$ furnishes the rational points $x\in X(F_q)$ with additional arithmetic structure: the Frobenius action on the fiber over $x$. For example, in the case of the Vieta cover of polynomials over $F_q$ this structure describes a polynomial's irreducible decomposition type. Furthermore, the distribution of these Frobenius actions is encoded in the cohomology of $\widetilde{X}$ via the Grothendieck-Lefschetz trace formula. This note presents a version of the trace formula that is suited for studying the distribution in the context of representation stability: for certain sequences of varieties $(\widetilde{X}_n)$ the cohomology, and therefore the distribution of the Frobenius actions, stabilizes in a precise sense. We conclude by fully working out the example of the Vieta cover of the variety of polynomials. The calculation includes the distribution of cycle decompositions on cosets of Young subgroups of the symmetric group, which might be of independent interest.

Arithmetic properties of coefficients of power series expansion of $\prod_{n=0}^{\infty}\left(1-x^{2^{n}}\right)^{t}$ (with an Appendix by Andrzej Schinzel)
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $F(x)=\prod_{n=0}^{\infty}(1-x^{2^{n}})$ be the generating function for the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence $((-1)^{s_{2}(n)})_{n\in\N}$. In this paper we initiate the study of the arithmetic properties of coefficients of the power series expansions of the function $$ F_{t}(x)=F(x)^{t}=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}f_{n}(t)x^{n}. $$ For $t\in\N_{+}$ the sequence $(f_{n}(t))_{n\in\N}$ is the Cauchy convolution of $t$ copies of the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence. For $t\in\Z_{<0}$ the $n$-th term of the sequence $(f_{n}(t))_{n\in\N}$ counts the number of representations of the number $n$ as a sum of powers of 2 where each summand can have one among $-t$ colors. Among other things, we present a characterization of the solutions of the equations $f_{n}(2^k)=0$, where $k\in\N$, and $f_{n}(3)=0$. Next, we present the exact value of the 2-adic valuation of the number $f_{n}(1-2^{m})$ - a result which generalizes the well known expression concerning the 2-adic valuation of the values of the binary partition function introduced by Euler and studied by Churchhouse and others.

Hilbert Bases and Lecture Hall Partitions
Published in Ramanujan J. 47 (2018), no. 3, 509-531 • View PublicationBIB
In the interest of finding the minimum additive generating set for the set of $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall partitions, we compute the Hilbert bases for the $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall cones in certain cases. In particular, we compute the Hilbert bases for two well-studied families of sequences, namely the $1\mod k$ sequences and the $\ell$-sequences. Additionally, we provide a characterization of the Hilbert bases for $\boldsymbol{u}$-generated Gorenstein $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall cones in low dimensions.
The Smith normal form of a specialized Giambelli-type matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the study of determinant formulas for Schur functions, Hamel and Goulden introduced a class of Giambelli-type matrices with respect to outside decompositions of partition diagrams, which unify the Jacobi-Trudi matrices, the Giambelli matrices and the Lascoux-Pragacz matrices. Stanley determined the Smith normal form of a specialized Jacobi-Trudi matrix. Motivated by Stanley's work, we obtain the Smith normal form of a specialized Giambelli matrix and a specialized Lascoux-Pragacz matrix. Furthermore, we show that, for a given partition, the Smith normal form of any specialized Giambelli-type matrix can be obtained from that of the corresponding specialization of the classical Giambelli matrix by a sequence of stabilization operations.

Fibonacci words in hyperbolic Pascal triangles
The hyperbolic Pascal triangle ${\cal HPT}_{4,q}$ $(q\ge5)$ is a new mathematical construction, which is a geometrical generalization of Pascal's arithmetical triangle. In the present study we show that a natural pattern of rows of ${\cal HPT}_{4,5}$ is almost the same as the sequence consisting of every second term of the well-known Fibonacci words. Further, we give a generalization of the Fibonacci words using the hyperbolic Pascal triangles. The geometrical properties of a ${\cal HPT}_{4,q}$ imply a graph structure between the finite Fibonacci words.

Gowers norms control diophantine inequalities
Published in Alg. Number Th. 14 (2020) 1457-1536 • View PublicationBIB
A central tool in the study of systems of linear equations with integer coefficients is the Generalised von Neumann Theorem of Green and Tao. This theorem reduces the task of counting the weighted solutions of these equations to that of counting the weighted solutions for a particular family of forms, the Gowers norms $\Vert f \Vert_{U^{s+1}[N]}$ of the weight $f$. In this paper we consider systems of linear inequalities with real coefficients, and show that the number of solutions to such weighted diophantine inequalities may also be bounded by Gowers norms. Furthermore, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a system of real linear forms to be governed by Gowers norms in this way. We present applications to cancellation of the Möbius function over certain sequences. The machinery developed in this paper can be adapted to the case in which the weights are unbounded but suitably pseudorandom, with applications to counting the number of solutions to diophantine inequalities over the primes. Substantial extra difficulties occur in this setting, however, and we have prepared a separate paper on these issues.

A uniformness conjecture of the Kolakoski sequence, graph connectivity, and correlations
The Kolakoski sequence is the unique infinite sequence with values in $\{1,2\}$ and first term $1$ which equals the sequence of run-lengths of itself, we call this $K(1,2).$ We define $K(m,n)$ similarly. A well-known conjecture is that the limiting density of $K(1,2)$ is one-half. We state a natural generalization, the "generalized uniformness conjecture" (GUC). The GUC seems intractable, but we prove a partial result. The GUC implies that members of a certain family of directed graphs $G_{m,n,k}$ are all strongly connected. We prove this unconditionally. For $d>0,$ let $cf(m,n,d)$ be the density of indices $i$ such that $K(m, n)_i=K(m, n)_{i+d}.$ Essentially, $cf(m, n, d)$ is the autocorrelation function of a stationary stochastic process with random variables $\{X_t\}_{t\in\mathbb{Z}}$ whereby a sample of a finite window of this process is formed by copying as many consecutive terms of $K(m,n)$ starting from a "uniformly random index" $i\in\mathbb{Z}_+.$ Assuming the GUC, we prove that we can compute $cf(m,n,d)$ exactly for quite large $d$ by constructing a periodic sequence $S$ of period around $10^{8.5}$ such that for $d$ not too large, the correlation frequency at distance $d$ in $K(m,n)$ equals that in $S.$ We efficiently compute correlations in $S$ using polynomial multiplication via FFT. We plot our estimates $cf(m,n,d)$ for several small values of $(m,n)$ and $d\le10^5$ or $10^6$. We note many suggested patterns. For example, for the three pairs $(m,n)\in\{(1,2),(2,3),(3,4)\},$ the function $cf(m,n,d)$ behaves very differently as we restrict $d$ to the $m+n$ residue classes $\text{mod}$ $m+n.$ The plots of the three functions $cf(1,2,d),cf(2,3,d),$ and $cf(3,4,d)$ resemble waves which have common nodes. We consider this very unusual behavior for an autocorrelation function. The pairs $(m,n)\in\{(1,4),(1,6),(2,5)\}$ show wave-like patterns with much more noise.

Generating functions for permutations which avoid consecutive patterns with multiple descents
Let $S_n$ denote the group all permutations of $n$. For every permutation $σ$, we let $\mathrm{des}(σ)$ denote the number of descents in $σ$ and $\mathrm{LRMin}(σ)$ denote the number of left-to-right minima of $σ$. Given a sequence $τ= τ_1 \cdots τ_n$ of distinct positive integers, we define the reduction of $τ$, $\mathrm{red}(τ)$, to be the permutation of $S_n$ that results by replacing the $i$-th smallest element of $τ$ by $i$. If $Γ$ is a set of permutations, we say that a permutation $σ= σ_1 \ldots σ_n \in S_n$ has a $Γ$-match starting at position $i$ if there is a $i < j$ such that $\mathrm{red}(σ_i σ_{i+1} \ldots σ_j) \in Γ$. We let $Γ$-$\mathrm{mch}(σ)$ denote the number of $Γ$-matches in $σ$. We let $\mathcal{NM}_n(Γ)$ be the set of $σ\in S_n$ such that $Γ$-$\mathrm{mch}(σ) = 0$. In this paper, we modify Jones and Remmel's reciprocity method to study the generating function of the form \begin{equation} \mbox{NM}_Γ(t,x,y)=\sum_{n \geq 0} \frac{t^n}{n!} \mbox{NM}_{Γ,n}(x,y) \end{equation} where $\displaystyle \mbox{NM}_{Γ,n}(x,y) =\sum_{σ\in \mathcal{NM}_n(Γ)}x^{\mathrm{LRmin}(σ)}y^{1+\mathrm{des}(σ)}$ in the case where we no longer insist that all the permutations $τ\in Γ$ have at most one descent.

The Kolakoski sequence and related conjectures about orbits
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kolakoski sequence is the unique infinite sequence with values in $\{1, 2\}$ and first term twems $1, 2, \ldots$ which equals the sequence of run-lengths of itself, we call this $K(1, 2).$ We define $K(m, n)$ similarly for $m+n$ odd. A well-known open problem is that its limiting density is one-half. Indeed, not much is known about the Kolakoski sequence. The focus of this paper in on conjectures related to the Kolakoski sequence which are more discrete in nature. We conjecture that a certain doubly infinite family of finite sequences $E_{1, n}\left(1^{2^j}, 1^{2j}\right)$ has odd length for all $j>0$ and even $n>0.$ We define $cf(m, n, d)$ to be the "correlation frequency" or limiting probability that terms in $K(m, n)$ which are $d$ apart are equal. We conjecture that the sign of $cf(m, n, d) - 1/2$ is periodic mod $m+n.$ We also discuss extensive empirical evidence for these conjectures.

Tverberg type theorems for matroids
In this paper we show a variant of colorful Tverberg's theorem which is valid in any matroid: Let $S$ be a sequence of non-loops in a matroid $M$ of finite rank $m$ with closure operator cl. Suppose that $S$ is colored in such a way that the first color does not appear more than $r$-times and each other color appears at most $(r-1)$-times. Then $S$ can be partitioned into $r$ rainbow subsequences $S_1,\ldots, S_r$ such that $cl\,\emptyset\subsetneq cl\,S_1\subseteq cl\, S_2\subseteq \ldots \subseteq cl\,S_r$. In particular, $\emptyset\neq \bigcap_{i=1}^r cl\,S_i$. A subsequence is called rainbow if it contains each color at most once. The conclusion of our theorem is weaker than the conclusion of the original Tverberg's theorem in $\mathbb R^d$, which states that $\bigcap conv\,S_i\neq \emptyset$, whereas we only claim that $\bigcap aff\,S_i\neq \emptyset$. On the other hand, our theorem strengthens the Tverberg's theorem in several other ways: 1) it is applicable to any matroid (whereas Tverberg's theorem can only be used in $\mathbb R^d$), 2) instead of $\bigcap cl\,S_i\neq \emptyset$ we have the stronger condition $cl\,\emptyset\subsetneq cl\,S_1\subseteq cl\,S_2\subseteq \ldots \subseteq cl\,S_r$, and 3) we add a color constraints that are even stronger than the color constraints in the colorful version of Tverberg's theorem. Recently, the author together with Goaoc, Mabillard, Patáková, Tancer and Wagner used the first property and applied the non-colorful version of this theorem to homology groups with $GF(p)$ coefficients to obtain several non-embeddability results, for details we refer to arXiv:1610.09063.

Asymptotic enumeration of graphs by degree sequence, and the degree sequence of a random graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we relate a fundamental parameter of a random graph, its degree sequence, to a simple model of nearly independent binomial random variables. This confirms a conjecture made in 1997. As a result, many interesting functions of the joint distribution of graph degrees, such as the distribution of the median degree, become amenable to estimation. Our result is established by proving an asymptotic formula conjectured in 1990 for the number of graphs with given degree sequence. In particular, this gives an asymptotic formula for the number of $d$-regular graphs for all $d$, as $n\to\infty$.

Cutoff for Ramanujan graphs via degree inflation
Published in Electron. Commun. Probab. Volume 22 (2017), paper no. 45, 10 pp • View PublicationBIB
Recently Lubetzky and Peres showed that simple random walks on a sequence of $d$-regular Ramanujan graphs $G_n=(V_n,E_n)$ of increasing sizes exhibit cutoff in total variation around the diameter lower bound $\frac{d}{d-2}\log_{d-1}|V_n| $. We provide a different argument under the assumption that for some $r(n) \gg 1$ the maximal number of simple cycles in a ball of radius $r(n)$ in $G_n$ is uniformly bounded in $n$.

The Sprague-Grundy function for some nearly disjunctive sums of Nim and Silver Dollar games
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and analyse an extension of the disjunctive sum operation on some classical impartial games. Whereas the disjunctive sum describes positions formed from independent subpositions, our operation combines positions that are not completely independent but interact only in a very restricted way. We extend the games Nim and Silver Dollar, played by moving counters along one-dimensional strips of cells, by joining several strips at their initial cell. We prove that, in certain cases, computing the Sprague-Grundy function can be simplified to that of a simpler game with at most two tokens in each strip. We give an algorithm that, for each Sprague-Grundy value g, computes the positions of two-token Star Nim whose Sprague-Grundy values are g. We establish that the sequence of differences of entries of these positions is ultimately additively periodic.
Minimal length maximal green sequences
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 96C (2018) pp. 76--138 • View PublicationBIB
Maximal green sequences are important objects in representation theory, cluster algebras, and string theory. It is an open problem to determine what lengths are achieved by the maximal green sequences of a quiver. We combine the combinatorics of surface triangulations and the basics of scattering diagrams to address this problem. Our main result is a formula for the length of minimal length maximal green sequences of quivers defined by triangulations of an annulus or a punctured disk.

Bijections in de Bruijn Graphs

A T-net of order $m$ is a graph with $m$ nodes and $2m$ directed edges, where every node has indegree and outdegree equal to $2$. (A well known example of T-nets are de Bruijn graphs.) Given a T-net $N$ of order $m$, there is the so called "doubling" process that creates a T-net $N^*$ from $N$ with $2m$ nodes and $4m$ edges. Let $|X|$ denote the number of Eulerian cycles in a graph $X$. It is known that $| N^*|=2^{m-1}|N|$. In this paper we present a new proof of this identity. Moreover we prove that $|N|\leq 2^{m-1}$. Let $Θ(X)$ denote the set of all Eulerian cycles in a graph $X$ and $S(n)$ the set of all binary sequences of length $n$. Exploiting the new proof we construct a bijection $Θ(N)\times S(m-1)\rightarrow Θ(N^*)$, which allows us to solve one of Stanley's open questions: we find a bijection between de Bruijn sequences of order $n$ and $S(2^{n-1})$.

Expansion of permutations as products of transpositions
We compute the number of ways a given permutation can be written as a product of exactly $k$ transpositions. We express this number as a linear combination of explicit geometric sequences, with coefficients which can be computed in many particular cases. Along the way we prove several symmetry properties for matrices associated with bipartite graphs, as well as some general (likely known) properties of Young diagrams. The methods involve linear algebra, enumeration of border strip tableau, and a differential operator on symmetric polynomials.

Planar graphs and Stanley's Chromatic Functions
This article is dedicated to the study of positivity phenomena for the chromatic symmetric function of a graph with respect to various bases of symmetric functions. We give a new proof of Gasharov's theorem on the Schur-positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a $(3 + 1)$-free poset. We present a combinatorial interpretation of the Schur-coefficients in terms of planar networks. Compared to Gasharov's proof, it gives a clearer visual illustration of the cancellation procedures and is quite similar in spirit to the proof of monomial positivity of Schur functions via the Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot lemma. We apply a similar device to the $e$-positivity problem of chromatic functions. Following Stanley, we analyze certain analogs of symmetric functions attached to graphs instead of working with chromatic symmetric functions of graphs directly. We introduce a new combinatorial object: the correct sequences of unit interval orders, and, using these, we reprove monomial positivity of $G$-analogues of the power sum symmetric functions.

A new approach to $e$-positivity for Stanley's chromatic functions
In this paper, we study positivity phenomena for the $e$-coefficients of Stanley's chromatic function of a graph. We introduce a new combinatorial object: the {\em correct} sequences of unit interval orders, and using these, in certain cases, we succeed to construct combinatorial models of the coefficients appearing in Stanley's conjecture. Our main result is the proof of positivity of the coefficients $c_{n-k,1^k}$, $c_{n-2,2}$, $c_{n-3,2,1}$ and $c_{2^k,1^{n-2k}}$ of the expansion of the chromatic symmetric function in terms of the basis of the elementary symmetric polynomials for the case of $(3+1)$-free posets.

Enumerating multiplex juggling patterns
Mathematics has been used in the exploration and enumeration of juggling patterns. In the case when we catch and throw one ball at a time the number of possible juggling patterns is well-known. When we are allowed to catch and throw any number of balls at a given time (known as multiplex juggling) the enumeration is more difficult and has only been established in a few special cases. We give a method of using cards related to "embeddings" of ordered partitions to enumerate the count of multiplex juggling sequences, determine these counts for small cases, and establish some combinatorial properties of the set of cards needed.
