Deciding game invariance
Duchêne and Rigo introduced the notion of invariance for take-away games on heaps. Roughly speaking, these are games whose rulesets do not depend on the position. Given a sequence $S$ of positive tuples of integers, the question of whether there exists an invariant game having $S$ as set of $\mathcal{P}$-positions is relevant. In particular, it was recently proved by Larsson et al. that if $S$ is a pair of complementary Beatty sequences, then the answer to this question is always positive. In this paper, we show that for a fairly large set of sequences (expressed by infinite words), the answer to this question is decidable.

A rooted planar map is a connected graph embedded in the 2-sphere, with one edge marked and assigned an orientation. A term of the pure lambda calculus is said to be linear if every variable is used exactly once, normal if it contains no beta-redexes, and planar if it is linear and the use of variables moreover follows a deterministic stack discipline. We begin by showing that the sequence counting normal planar lambda terms by a natural notion of size coincides with the sequence (originally computed by Tutte) counting rooted planar maps by number of edges. Next, we explain how to apply the machinery of string diagrams to derive a graphical language for normal planar lambda terms, extracted from the semantics of linear lambda calculus in symmetric monoidal closed categories equipped with a linear reflexive object or a linear reflexive pair. Finally, our main result is a size-preserving bijection between rooted planar maps and normal planar lambda terms, which we establish by explaining how Tutte decomposition of rooted planar maps (into vertex maps, maps with an isthmic root, and maps with a non-isthmic root) may be naturally replayed in linear lambda calculus, as certain surgeries on the string diagrams of normal planar lambda terms.

A set is said to be \emph{3-free} if no three elements form an arithmetic progression. Given a 3-free set $A$ of integers $0=a_0<a_1<\cdots<a_t$, the \emph{Stanley sequence} $S(A)=\{a_n\}$ is defined using the greedy algorithm: For each successive $n>t$, we pick the smallest possible $a_n$ so that $\{a_0,a_1,\ldots,a_n\}$ is 3-free and increasing. Work by Odlyzko and Stanley indicates that Stanley sequences may be divided into two classes. Sequences of Type 1 are highly structured and satisfy $αn^{\log_2 3}/2\le a_n\le αn^{\log_2 3}$, for some constant $α$, while those of Type 2 are chaotic and satisfy $Θ(n^2/\log n)$. In this paper, we consider the possible values for $α$ in the growth of Type 1 Stanley sequences. Whereas Odlyzko and Stanley assumed $α=1$, we show that $α$ can be any rational number which is at least 1 and for which the denominator, in lowest terms, is a power of 3.

We study a discrete-time duplication-deletion random graph model and analyse its asymptotic degree distribution. The random graphs consists of disjoint cliques. In each time step either a new vertex is brought in with probability $0<p<1$ and attached to an existing clique, chosen with probability proportional to the clique size, or all the edges of a random vertex are deleted with probability $1-p$. We prove almost sure convergence of the asymptotic degree distribution and find its exact values in terms of a hypergeometric integral, expressed in terms of the parameter $p$. In the regime $0<p<\frac{1}{2}$ we show that the degree sequence decays exponentially at rate $\frac{p}{1-p}$, whereas it satisfies a power-law with exponent $\frac{p}{2p-1}$ if $\frac{1}{2}<p<1$. At the threshold $p=\frac{1}{2}$ the degree sequence lies between a power-law and exponential decay.

We study joint free cumulants of u_t and u_t^{*}, where u_t is a free unitary Brownian motion at time t. We determine explicitly some special families of such cumulants. On the other hand, for a general joint cumulant of u_t and u_t^{*}, we "calculate the derivative" for t going to infinity, when u_t approaches a Haar unitary. In connection to the latter calculation we put into evidence an "infinitesimal determining sequence" which naturally accompanies an arbitrary R-diagonal element in a tracial *-probability space.
On two conjectures for M&m sequences

In this paper, the recently introduced M&m sequences and associated mean-median map are studied. These sequences are built by adding new points to a set of real numbers by balancing the mean of the new set with the median of the original. This process, although seemingly simple, gives rise to complicated dynamics. The main result is that two conjectures put forward by Chamberland and Martelli are shown to be true for a subset of possible starting conditions.

This article gives a combinatorial proof of a plethystic generalization of the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule. The main result expresses the product of a Schur function with the plethysm $p_r \circ h_n$ as an integral linear combination of Schur functions. The proof uses a sign-reversing involution on sequences of bead moves on James' abacus, inspired by the arguments in N. Loehr, Abacus proofs of Schur function identities, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 24 (2010), 1356-1370.
Integer sequence discovery from small graphs

We have exhaustively enumerated all simple, connected graphs of a finite order and have computed a selection of invariants over this set. Integer sequences were constructed from these invariants and checked against the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). 141 new sequences were added and 6 sequences were appended or corrected. From the graph database, we were able to programmatically suggest relationships among the invariants. It will be shown that we can readily visualize any sequence of graphs with a given criteria. The code has been released as an open-source framework for further analysis and the database was constructed to be extensible to invariants not considered in this work.
Degree Monotone Paths and Graph Operations
A path $P$ in a graph $G$ is said to be a degree monotone path if the sequence of degrees of the vertices of $P$ in the order in which they appear on $P$ is monotonic. The length of the longest degree monotone path in $G$ is denoted by $mp(G)$. This parameter was first studied in an earlier paper by the authors where bounds in terms of other parameters of $G$ were obtained.
In this paper we concentrate on the study of how $mp(G)$ changes under various operations on $G$. We first consider how $mp(G)$ changes when an edge is deleted, added, contracted or subdivided. We similarly consider the effects of adding or deleting a vertex. We sometimes restrict our attention to particular classes of graphs.
Finally we study $mp(G \times H)$ in terms of $mp(G)$ and $mp(H)$ where $\times$ is either the Cartesian product or the join of two graphs.
In all these cases we give bounds on the parameter $mp$ of the modified graph in terms of the original graph or graphs and we show that all the bounds are sharp.
Homomorphism reconfiguration via homotopy

We consider the following problem for a fixed graph H: given a graph G and two H-colorings of G, i.e. homomorphisms from G to H, can one be transformed (reconfigured) into the other by changing one color at a time, maintaining an H-coloring throughout. This is the same as finding a path in the Hom(G,H) complex. For H=K_k this is the problem of finding paths between k-colorings, which was shown to be in P for k<=3 and PSPACE-complete otherwise by Cereceda et al. 2011. We generalize the positive side of this dichotomy by providing an algorithm that solves the problem in polynomial time for any H with no C_4 subgraph. This gives a large class of constraints for which finding solutions to the Constraint Satisfaction Problem is NP-complete, but finding paths in the solution space is P.
The algorithm uses a characterization of possible reconfiguration sequences (paths in Hom(G,H)), whose main part is a purely topological condition described in algebraic terms of the fundamental groupoid of H seen as a topological space.

We give a simple proof of a well-known theorem of Gál and of the recent related results of Aistleitner, Berkes and Seip [1] regarding the size of GCD sums. In fact, our method obtains the asymptotically sharp constant in Gál's theorem, which is new. Our approach also gives a transparent explanation of the relationship between the maximal size of the Riemann zeta function on vertical lines and bounds on GCD sums; a point which was previously unclear. Furthermore we obtain sharp bounds on the spectral norm of GCD matrices which settles a question raised in [2]. We use bounds for the spectral norm to show that series formed out of dilates of periodic functions of bounded variation converge almost everywhere if the coefficients of the series are in $L^2 (\log\log 1/L)^γ$, with $γ> 2$. This was previously known with $γ>4$, and is known to fail for $γ<2$. We also develop a sharp Carleson-Hunt-type theorem for functions of bounded variations which settles another question raised in [1]. Finally we obtain almost sure bounds for partial sums of dilates of periodic functions of bounded variations improving [1]. This implies almost sure bounds for the discrepancy of $\{n_k x\}$ with $n_k$ an arbitrary growing sequences of integers.

We introduce the sequence $(i_n)_{n \geq 0}$ defined by $i_n = (-1)^{inv_2(n)}$, where $inv_2(n)$ denotes the number of inversions (i.e., occurrences of 10 as a scattered subsequence) in the binary representation of n. We show that this sequence has many similarities to the classical Rudin-Shapiro sequence. In particular, if S(N) denotes the N-th partial sum of the sequence $(i_n)_{n \geq 0}$, we show that $S(N) = G(\log_4 N)\sqrt{N}$, where G is a certain function that oscillates periodically between $\sqrt{3}/3$ and $\sqrt{2}$.
An iterated residue perspective on stable Grothendieck polynomials
Grothendieck polynomials are important objects in the study of the $K$-theory of flag varieties. Their many remarkable properties have been studied in the context of algebraic geometry and tableaux combinatorics. We explore a new tool, similar to generating sequences, which we call the iterated residue technique. We prove new formulas on the calculus of iterated residues and use them to prove straightening laws and multiplication formulas for stable Grothendieck polynomials. As a further application of our method, we give new proofs that the $K$-Pieri rule and the expansions of Grothendieck polynomials in the Schur basis both exhibit alternating signs. As a consequence, we observe that our method implies a new combinatorial statement of the $K$-Pieri rule. Our results indicate that the iterated residue technique should be further explored as a new line of attack on open conjectures regarding positivity and stability, for example of quiver polynomials and Thom polynomials, in $K$-theory.
On the classification of Stanley sequences

An integer sequence is said to be 3-free if no three elements form an arithmetic progression. Following the greedy algorithm, the Stanley sequence $S(a_0,a_1,\ldots,a_k)$ is defined to be the 3-free sequence $\{a_n\}$ having initial terms $a_0,a_1,\ldots,a_k$ and with each subsequent term $a_n>a_{n-1}$ chosen minimally such that the 3-free condition is not violated. Odlyzko and Stanley conjectured that Stanley sequences divide into two classes based on asymptotic growth patterns, with one class of highly structured sequences satisfying $a_n\approx Θ(n^{\log_2 3})$ and another class of seemingly chaotic sequences obeying $a_n=Θ(n^2/\log n)$. We propose a rigorous definition of regularity in Stanley sequences based on local structure rather than asymptotic behavior and show that our definition implies the corresponding asymptotic property proposed by Odlyzko and Stanley. We then construct many classes of regular Stanley sequences, which include as special cases all such sequences previously identified. We show how two regular sequences may be combined into another regular sequence, and how parts of a Stanley sequence may be translated while preserving regularity. Finally, we demonstrate that certain Stanley sequences possess proper subsets that are also Stanley sequences, a situation that appears previously to have been assumed impossible.

Let $(X_i)_{i \geq 1}$ and $(Y_i)_{i\geq1}$ be two independent sequences of independent identically distributed random variables taking their values in a common finite alphabet and having the same law. Let $LC_n$ be the length of the longest common subsequences of the two random words $X_1\cdots X_n$ and $Y_1\cdots Y_n$. Under a lower bound assumption on the order of its variance, $LC_n$ is shown to satisfy a central limit theorem. This is in contrast to the limiting distribution of the length of the longest common subsequences in two independent uniform random permutations of $\{1, \dots, n\}$, which is shown to be the Tracy-Widom distribution.

In our previous work [arXiv:1403.6569], we introduced the partition q-series for mutation loop --- a loop in exchange quiver. In this paper, we show that for certain class of mutation sequences, called reverse-ending mutation loops, a graded version of partition q-series essentially coincides with the ordered product of quantum dilogarithm associated with each mutation; the partition q-series provides a state-sum description of combinatorial Donaldson-Thomas invariants introduced by B. Keller.
Generalized trapezoidal words

The factor complexity function $C_w(n)$ of a finite or infinite word $w$ counts the number of distinct factors of $w$ of length $n$ for each $n \ge 0$. A finite word $w$ of length $|w|$ is said to be trapezoidal if the graph of its factor complexity $C_w(n)$ as a function of $n$ (for $0 \leq n \leq |w|$) is that of a regular trapezoid (or possibly an isosceles triangle); that is, $C_w(n)$ increases by 1 with each $n$ on some interval of length $r$, then $C_w(n)$ is constant on some interval of length $s$, and finally $C_w(n)$ decreases by 1 with each $n$ on an interval of the same length $r$. Necessarily $C_w(1)=2$ (since there is one factor of length $0$, namely the empty word), so any trapezoidal word is on a binary alphabet. Trapezoidal words were first introduced by de Luca (1999) when studying the behaviour of the factor complexity of finite Sturmian words, i.e., factors of infinite "cutting sequences", obtained by coding the sequence of cuts in an integer lattice over the positive quadrant of $\mathbb{R}^2$ made by a line of irrational slope. Every finite Sturmian word is trapezoidal, but not conversely. However, both families of words (trapezoidal and Sturmian) are special classes of so-called "rich words" (also known as "full words") - a wider family of finite and infinite words characterized by containing the maximal number of palindromes - studied in depth by the first author and others in 2009.
In this paper, we introduce a natural generalization of trapezoidal words over an arbitrary finite alphabet $\mathcal{A}$, called generalized trapezoidal words (or GT-words for short). In particular, we study combinatorial and structural properties of this new class of words, and we show that, unlike the binary case, not all GT-words are rich in palindromes when $|\mathcal{A}| \geq 3$, but we can describe all those that are rich.
A general theory of Wilf-equivalence for Catalan structures

The existence of apparently coincidental equalities (also called Wilf-equivalences) between the enumeration sequences, or generating functions, of various hereditary classes of combinatorial structures has attracted significant interest. We investigate such coincidences among non-crossing matchings and a variety of other Catalan structures including Dyck paths, 231-avoiding permutations and plane forests. In particular we consider principal classes defined by not containing an occurrence of a single given structure. An easily computed equivalence relation among structures is described such that if two structures are equivalent then the associated principal classes have the same enumeration sequence. We give an asymptotic estimate of the number of equivalence classes of this relation among structures of a given size and show that it is exponentially smaller than the corresponding Catalan number. In other words these "coincidental" equalities are in fact very common among principal classes. Our results also allow us to prove, in a unified and bijective manner, several known Wilf-equivalences from the literature.
Counting With Irrational Tiles
We introduce and study the number of tilings of unit height rectangles with irrational tiles. We prove that the class of sequences of these numbers coincides with the class of diagonals of N-rational generating functions and a class of certain binomial multisums. We then give asymptotic applications and establish connections to hypergeometric functions and Catalan numbers.
Semiampleness criteria for divisors on $\overline M_{0,n}$
We develop new characteristic-independent combinatorial criteria for semiampleness of divisors on $\overline{M}_{0,n}$. As an application, we associate to a cyclic rational quadratic form satisfying a certain balancedness condition an infinite sequence of semiample line bundles. We also give several sufficient and effective conditions for a symmetric divisor on $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ to be semiample or nef.
