We consider the quantized enveloping algebra $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$ and its basic module $V(Λ_0)$. This module is infinite-dimensional, irreducible, integrable, and highest-weight. We describe $V(Λ_0)$ using a $q$-shuffle algebra in the following way. Start with the free associative algebra $\mathbb V$ on two generators $x,y$. The standard basis for $\mathbb V$ consists of the words in $x,y$. In 1995 M. Rosso introduced an associative algebra structure on $\mathbb V$, called a $q$-shuffle algebra. For $u,v\in \lbrace x,y\rbrace$ their $q$-shuffle product is $u\star v = uv+q^{(u,v)}vu$, where $( u,v) =2$ (resp. $(u,v) =-2$) if $u=v$ (resp.
$u\not=v$).
Let $\mathbb U$ denote the subalgebra of the $q$-shuffle algebra $\mathbb V$
that is generated by $x, y$. Rosso showed that the algebra $\mathbb U$ is isomorphic to the positive part of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$.
In our first main result, we turn $\mathbb U$ into a $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-module. Let $\bf U$ denote the $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-submodule of $\mathbb U$ generated by the empty word. In our second main result, we show that the $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-modules $\bf U$ and $V(Λ_0)$ are isomorphic. Let $\bf V$ denote the subspace of $\mathbb V$ spanned by the words that do not begin with $y$ or $xx$. In our third main result, we show that $\bf U = \mathbb U \cap {\bf V}$.

We consider the positive part $U^+_q$ of the quantized enveloping algebra $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$. The algebra $U^+_q$ has a presentation involving two generators and two relations, called the $q$-Serre relations. There is a PBW basis for $U^+_q$ due to Damiani, and a PBW basis for $U^+_q$ due to Beck. In 2019 we used Catalan words and a $q$-shuffle algebra to express the Damiani PBW basis in closed form. In this paper we use a similar approach to express the Beck PBW basis in closed form. We also consider how the Damiani PBW basis and the Beck PBW basis are related to the alternating PBW basis for $U^+_q$.

We study PBW bases of the untwisted quantum loop group $U_q(L\mathfrak{g})$ (in the Drinfeld new presentation) using the combinatorics of loop words, by generalizing the treatment of [29,30,43] in the finite type case. As an application, we prove that Enriquez' homomorphism [11] from the positive half of the quantum loop group to the trigonometric degeneration of Feigin-Odesskii's elliptic algebra [15] associated to $\mathfrak{g}$ is an isomorphism.

We extend the shuffle algebra perspective on scalar-valued non-commutative probability theory to the operator-valued case. Given an operator-valued probability space with an algebra $B$ acting on it (on the left and on the right), we associate operators in the operad of multilinear maps on $B$ to the operator-valued distribution and free cumulants of a random variable. These operators define a representation of a PROS of non-crossing partitions. Using concepts from higher category theory, specifically $2$-monoidal categories, we define a notion of unshuffle Hopf algebra on an underlying PROS. We introduce a PROS of words insertions and show that both the latter and the PROS of non-crossing partitions are unshuffle Hopf algebras (in a $2$-monoidal sense). The two relate by mean of a map of unshuffle bialgebras (in a $2$-monoidal sense) which we call the splitting map. Ultimately, we obtain a left half-shuffle fixed point equation corresponding to free moment-cumulant relations in a shuffle algebra of bicollection homomorphisms on the PROS of words insertions. Right half-shuffle and shuffle laws are interpreted in the framework of boolean and monotone non-commutative probability theory, respectively.

Motivated by a polynomial identity of certain iterated integrals, first observed in [CGM20] in the setting of lattice paths, we prove an intriguing combinatorial identity in the shuffle algebra. It has a close connection to de Bruijn's formula when interpreted in the framework of signatures of paths.

Boolean, free and monotone cumulants as well as relations among them, have proven to be important in the study of non-commutative probability theory. Quite notably, Boolean cumulants were successfully used to study free infinite divisibility via the Boolean Bercovici--Pata bijection. On the other hand, in recent years the concept of infinitesimal non-commutative probability has been developed, together with the notion of infinitesimal cumulants which can be useful in the context of combinatorial questions.
In this paper, we show that the known relations among free, Boolean and monotone cumulants still hold in the infinitesimal framework. Our approach is based on the use of Grassmann algebra. Formulas involving infinitesimal cumulants can be obtained by applying a formal derivation to known formulas.
The relations between the various types of cumulants turn out to be captured via the shuffle algebra approach to moment-cumulant relations in non-commutative probability theory. In this formulation, (free, Boolean and monotone) cumulants are represented as elements of the Lie algebra of infinitesimal characters over a particular combinatorial Hopf algebra. The latter consists of the graded connected double tensor algebra defined over a non-commutative probability space and is neither commutative nor cocommutative. In this note it is shown how the shuffle algebra approach naturally extends to the notion of infinitesimal non-commutative probability space. The basic step consists in replacing the base field as target space of linear Hopf algebra maps by the Grassmann algebra over the base field. We also consider the infinitesimal analog of the Boolean Bercovici--Pata map.
Split Hopf algebras, quasi-shuffle algebras, and the cohomology of Omega Sigma X

Let A and B be two connected graded commutative k-algebras of finite type, where k is a perfect field of positive characteristic p. We prove that the quasi--shuffle algebras generated by A and B are isomorphic as Hopf algebras if and only if A and B are isomorphic as graded k-vector spaces equipped with a Frobenius (pth-power) map.
For the hardest part of this analysis, we work with the dual construction, and are led to study connected graded cocommutative Hopf algebras H with two additional properties: H is free as an associative algebra, and the projection onto the indecomposables is split as a morphism of graded k-vector spaces equipped with a Verschiebung map.
Building on work on non-commutative Witt vectors by Goerss, Lannes, and Morel, we classify such free, `split' Hopf algebras.
A topological consequence is that, if X is a based path connected space, then the Hopf algebra H^*(Omega Sigma X;k) is determined by the stable homotopy type of X.
We also discuss the much easier analogous characteristic 0 results, and give a characterization of when our quasi--shuffle algebras are polynomial, generalizing the so-called Ditters conjecture.

We show that the wreath Macdonald polynomials for $\mathbb{Z}/\ell\mathbb{Z}\wrΣ_n$, when naturally viewed as elements in the vertex representation of the quantum toroidal algebra $U_{\mathfrak{q},\mathfrak{d}}(\ddot{\mathfrak{sl}}_\ell)$, diagonalize its horizontal Heisenberg subalgebra. Our proof makes heavy use of shuffle algebra methods, and we also obtain a new proof of existence of wreath Macdonald polynomials.
The representation theory of the increasing monoid
We study the representation theory of the increasing monoid. Our results provide a fairly comprehensive picture of the representation category: for example, we describe the Grothendieck group (including the effective cone), classify injective objects, establish properties of injective and projective resolutions, construct a derived auto-duality, and so on. Our work is motivated by numerous connections of this theory to other areas, such as representation stability, commutative algebra, simplicial theory, and shuffle algebras.
Shuffle quadri-algebra and concatenation
In this article, we study the shuffle quadri-algebra H. We prove the existence of some relations between quadri-algebra laws which constitute shuffle product, the concatenation product and the deconcatenation coproduct. We also show that the underlying shuffle algebra has two module-algebra structures on itself.

Since the early work of Richard Stanley, it has been observed that several permutation statistics have a remarkable property with respect to shuffles of permutations. We formalize this notion of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic and introduce the shuffle algebra of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic, which encodes the distribution of the statistic over shuffles of permutations. This paper develops a theory of shuffle-compatibility for descent statistics (statistics that depend only on the descent set and length) which has close connections to the theory of $P$-partitions, quasisymmetric functions, and noncommutative symmetric functions. We use our framework to prove that many descent statistics are shuffle-compatible and to give explicit descriptions of their shuffle algebras, thus unifying past results of Stanley, Gessel, Stembridge, Aguiar-Bergeron-Nyman, and Petersen.
Monotone, free, and boolean cumulants: a shuffle algebra approach

The theory of cumulants is revisited in the "Rota way", that is, by following a combinatorial Hopf algebra approach. Monotone, free, and boolean cumulants are considered as infinitesimal characters over a particular combinatorial Hopf algebra. The latter is neither commutative nor cocommutative, and has an underlying unshuffle bialgebra structure which gives rise to a shuffle product on its graded dual. The moment-cumulant relations are encoded in terms of shuffle and half-shuffle exponentials. It is then shown how to express concisely monotone, free, and boolean cumulants in terms of each other using the pre-Lie Magnus expansion together with shuffle and half-shuffle logarithms.

We study the asymptotics of the global fluctuations for the difference between two adjacent levels in the $β$--Jacobi corners process (multilevel and general $β$ extension of the classical Jacobi ensemble of random matrices). The limit is identified with the derivative of the $2d$ Gaussian Free Field. Our main tools are integral forms for the (Macdonald-type) difference operators originating from the shuffle algebra.

A combinatorial interpretation is given of Devlin's word problem underlying the classical center-focus problem of Poincare for non-autonomous differential equations. It turns out that the canonical polynomials of Devlin are from the point of view of connected graded Hopf algebras intimately related to the graded components of a Hopf algebra antipode applied to the formal power series of Ferfera. The link is made by passing through control theory since the Abel equation, which describes a center, is equivalent to an output feedback equation, and the Hopf algebra of output feedback is derived from the composition of iterated integrals rather than just the products of iterated integrals, which yields the shuffle algebra. This means that the primary algebraic structure at play in Devlin's approach is actually not the shuffle algebra, but a Faa di Bruno type Hopf algebra, which is defined in terms of the shuffle product but is a distinct algebraic structure.
Quantum Algebras and Cyclic Quiver Varieties
The purpose of this thesis is to present certain viewpoints on the geometric representation theory of Nakajima cyclic quiver varieties, in relation to the Maulik-Okounkov stable basis. Our main technical tool is the shuffle algebra, which arises as the K-theoretic Hall algebra of the double cyclic quiver. We prove the isomorphism between the shuffle algebra and the quantum toroidal algebra U_{q,t}(sl_n^^), and identify the quotients of Verma modules for the shuffle algebra with the K-theory groups of Nakajima cyclic quiver varieties, which were studied by Nakajima and Varagnolo-Vasserot.
The shuffle algebra viewpoint allows us to construct the universal R-matrix of the quantum toroidal algebra U_{q,t}(sl_n^^), and to factor it in terms of pieces that arise from subalgebras isomorphic to quantum affine groups U_{q}(gl_m^), for various m. This factorization generalizes constructions of Khoroshkin-Tolstoy to the toroidal case, and matches the factorization that Maulik-Okounkov produce via the stable basis in the K-theory of Nakajima quiver varieties. We connect the two pictures by computing formulas for the root generators of U_{q,t}(sl_n^^) acting on the stable basis, which provide a wide extension of Murnaghan-Nakayama and Pieri type rules from combinatorics.
Hopf Algebras and Markov Chains
This thesis introduces a way to build Markov chains out of Hopf algebras. The transition matrix of a "Hopf-power Markov chain" is (the transpose of) the matrix of the coproduct-then-product operator on a combinatorial Hopf algebra with respect to a suitable basis. These chains describe the breaking-then-recombining of the combinatorial objects in the Hopf algebra. The motivating example is the famous Gilbert-Shannon-Reeds model of riffle-shuffling of a deck of cards, which arises in this manner from the shuffle algebra.
The primary reason for constructing Hopf-power Markov chains, or for rephrasing familiar chains through this lens, is that much information about them comes simply from translating well-known facts on the underlying Hopf algebra. For example, there is an explicit formula for the stationary distribution (Theorem 4.5.1), and constructing quotient algebras show that certain statistics on a Hopf-power Markov chain are themselves Markov chains (Theorem 4.7.1). Perhaps the pinnacle is Theorem 2.5.1, a collection of algorithms for a full left and right eigenbasis in many common cases where the underlying Hopf algebra is commutative or cocommutative. This arises from a cocktail of the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem, the Cartier-Milnor-Moore theorem, Reutenauer's structure theory of the free Lie algebra, and Patras's Eulerian idempotent theory.
Since Hopf-power Markov chains can exhibit very different behaviour depending on the structure of the underlying Hopf algebra and its distinguished basis, one must restrict attention to certain styles of Hopf algebras in order to obtain stronger results. This thesis will focus respectively on a free-commutative basis, which produces "independent breaking" chains, and a cofree basis; there will be both general statements and in-depth examples.

Partial fraction methods play an important role in the study of multiple zeta values. One class of such fractions is related to the integral representations of MZVs. We show that this class of fractions has a natural structure of shuffle algebra. This finding conceptualizes the connections among the various methods of stuffle, shuffle and partial fractions in the study of MZVs. This approach also gives an explicit product formula of the fractions.
