Three New Refined Arnold Families
The Springer numbers, introduced by Arnold, are generalizations of Euler numbers in the sense of Coxeter groups. They appear as the row sums of a double triangular array $(v_{n,k})$ of integers, $1\leq|k|\leq n$, defined recursively by a boustrophedon algorithm. We say a sequence of combinatorial objects $(X_{n,k})$ is an Arnold family if $X_{n,k}$ is counted by $v_{n,k}$. A polynomial refinement $V_{n,k}(t)$ of $v_{n,k}$, together with the combinatorial interpretations in several combinatorial structures was introduced by Eu and Fu recently. In this paper, we provide three new Arnold families of combinatorial objects, namely the cycle-up-down permutations, the valley signed permutations and Knuth's flip equivalences on permutations. We shall find corresponding statistics to realize the refined polynomial arrays.
A switching method for constructing cospectral gain graphs
A gain graph over a group $G$, also referred to as $G$-gain graph, is a graph where an element of a group $G$, called gain, is assigned to each oriented edge, in such a way that the inverse element is associated with the opposite orientation. Gain graphs can be regarded as a generalization of signed graphs, among others. In this work, we show a new switching method to construct cospectral gain graphs. Some previous methods known for graph cospectrality follow as a corollary of our results.

On Sign-Invertible Graphs
Let $G$ be a graph and $A$ be its adjacency matrix. A graph $G$ is invertible if its adjacency matrix $A$ is invertible and the inverse of $G$ is a weighted graph with adjacency matrix $A^{-1}$. A signed graph $(G,σ)$ is a weighted graph with a special weight function $σ: E(G)\to \{-1,1\}$. A graph is sign-invertible (or sign-invertible) if its inverse is a signed graph. A sign-invertible graph is always unimodular. The inverses of graphs have interesting combinatorial interests. In this paper, we study inverses of graphs and provide a combinatorial description for sign-invertible graphs, which provides a tool to characterize sign-invertible graphs. As applications, we complete characterize sign-invertible bipartite graphs with a unique perfect matching, and sign-invertible graphs with cycle rank at most two. As corollaries of these characterizations, some early results on trees (Buckley, Doty and Harary in 1982) and unicyclic graphs with a unique perfect matching (Kalita and Sarma in 2022) follow directly.

$P$-partitions with flags and back stable quasisymmetric functions
Stanley's theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions is a standard tool in combinatorics. It can be extended to allow for the presence of a restriction, that is a given maximal value for partitions at each vertex of the poset, as was shown by Assaf and Bergeron. Here we present a variation on their approach, which applies more generally. The enumerative side of the theory is more naturally expressed in terms of back stable quasisymmetric functions. We study the space of such functions, following the work of Lam, Lee and Shimozono on back stable symmetric functions. As applications we describe a new basis for the ring of polynomials that we call forest polynomials. Additionally we give a signed multiplicity-free expansion for any monomial expressed in the basis of slide polynomials.
Demazure product of permutations and hopping
The Demazure product (also goes by the name of 0-Hecke product or the greedy product) is an associative operation on Coxeter groups with interesting properties and important applications. In this note, we study permutations and present an efficient way to compute the Demazure product of two permutations starting from their usual product and then applying a new operator we call a hopping operator. We also give an analogous result for the group of signed permutations.

Spectra of power hypergraphs and signed graphs via parity-closed walks
The $k$-power hypergraph $G^{(k)}$ is the $k$-uniform hypergraph that is obtained by adding $k-2$ new vertices to each edge of a graph $G$, for $k \geq 3$. A parity-closed walk in $G$ is a closed walk that uses each edge an even number of times. In an earlier paper, we determined the eigenvalues of the adjacency tensor of $G^{(k)}$ using the eigenvalues of signed subgraphs of $G$. Here, we express the entire spectrum (that is, we determine all multiplicities and the characteristic polynomial) of $G^{(k)}$ in terms of parity-closed walks of $G$. Moreover, we give an explicit expression for the multiplicity of the spectral radius of $G^{(k)}$. Our results are mainly obtained by exploiting the so-called trace formula to determine the spectral moments of $G^{(k)}$. As a side result, we show that the number of parity-closed walks of given length is the corresponding spectral moment averaged over all signed graphs with underlying graph $G$. We also extrapolate the characteristic polynomial of $G^{(k)}$ to $k=2$, thereby introducing a pseudo-characteristic function. Among other results, we show that this function is the geometric mean of the characteristic polynomials of all signed graphs on $G$ and characterize when it is a polynomial. This supplements a result by Godsil and Gutman that the arithmetic mean of the characteristic polynomials of all signed graphs on $G$ equals the matching polynomial of $G$.

An Extension of Stanley's Symmetric Acyclicity Theorem to Signed Graphs
In 1995, Richard Stanley introduced the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$ and proved that, when written in terms of the elementary symmetric functions, it reveals the number of acyclic orientations of $G$ with a given number of sinks. In this paper, we generalize this result to signed graphs, that is, to graphs whose edges are labeled with $+$ or $-$ and whose colorings and orientations can interact with their signs. Additionally, we introduce a non-homogeneous basis which detects the number of sinks and which not only gives a Stanley-type result for signed graphs but gives an analogous result of this form for unsigned graphs as well.

An Algorithm to Enumerate Grid Signed Permutation Classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present an algorithm that enumerates a certain class of signed permutations, referred to as grid signed permutation classes. In the case of permutations, the corresponding grid classes are of interest because they are equivalent to the permutation classes that can be enumerated by polynomials. Furthermore, we apply our results to genome rearrangements and establish that the number of signed permutations with fixed prefix reversal and reversal distance is given by polynomials that can be computed by our algorithm.

Mycielskian of Signed Graphs
In this paper, we define the Mycielskian of a signed graph and discuss the properties of balance and switching in the Mycielskian of a given signed graph. We provide a condition for ensuring the Mycielskian of a balanced signed graph remains balanced, leading to the construction of a balanced Mycielskian. We establish a relation between the chromatic numbers of a signed graph and its Mycielskian. We also study the structure of different matrices related to the Mycielskian of a signed graph.

Cheeger inequalities on simplicial complexes
Published in Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Classe di Scienze, Dec 20, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
Cheeger-type inequalities in which the decomposability of a graph and the spectral gap of its Laplacian mutually control each other play an important role in graph theory and network analysis, in particular in the context of expander theory. The natural problem to extend such inequalities to simplicial complexes and their higher order Eckmann Laplacians has been open for a long time. Before proving any inequality, however, one needs to identify the right Cheeger-type constant for which such an inequality can hold. Here, we solve this problem. Our solution involves and combines constructions from simplicial topology, signed graphs, Gromov filling radii and an interpolation between the standard 2-Laplacians and the analytically more difficult 1-Laplacians, for which, however, the inequalities become equalities. It is then natural to develop a general theory for $p$-Laplacians on simplicial complexes and investigate the related Cheeger-type inequalities.
Pinnacle sets of signed permutations
Pinnacle sets record the values of the local maxima for a given family of permutations. They were introduced by Davis-Nelson-Petersen-Tenner as a dual concept to that of peaks, previously defined by Billey-Burdzy-Sagan. In recent years pinnacles and admissible pinnacles sets for the type $A$ symmetric group have been widely studied. In this article we define the pinnacle set of signed permutations of types $B$ and $D$. We give a closed formula for the number of type $B$/$D$ admissible pinnacle sets and answer several other related enumerative questions.

The signed graphs with two eigenvalues unequal to $\pm 1$
We complete the determination of the signed graphs for which the adjacency matrix has all but at most two eigenvalues equal to $\pm 1$. The unsigned graphs and the disconnected, the bipartite and the complete signed graphs with this property have already been determined in two earlier papers. Here we deal with the remaining cases.

Self-reciprocal polynomials connecting unsigned and signed relative derangements
Published in Journal of Difference Equations and Applications, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce polynomials (in $t$) of signed relative derangements that track the number of signed elements. The polynomials are clearly seen to be in a sense symmetric. Note that relative derangements are those without any signed elements, i.e., the evaluations of the polynomials at $t=0$. Also, the numbers of all signed relative derangements are given by the evaluations at $t=1$. Then the coefficients of the polynomials connect unsigned and signed relative derangements and show how putting elements with signs affects the formation of derangements. We first prove a recursion satisfied by these polynomials which results in a recursion satisfied by the coefficients. A combinatorial proof of the latter is provided next. We also show that the sequences of the coefficients are unimodal. Moreover, other results are obtained. For instance, a kind of dual of a relation between signed derangements and signed relative derangements previously proved by Chen and Zhang is presented.

Extremed signed graphs for triangle
In this paper, we study the Turán problem of signed graphs version. Suppose that $\dot{G}$ is a connected unbalanced signed graph of order $n$ with $e(\dot{G})$ edges and $e^-(\dot{G})$ negative edges, and let $ρ(\dot{G})$ be the spectral radius of $\dot{G}.$ The signed graph $\dot{G}^{s,t}$ ($s+t=n-2$) is obtained from an all-positive clique $(K_{n-2},+)$ with $V(K_{n-2})=\{u_1,\dots,u_s,v_1,\dots,v_t\}$ ($s,t\ge 1$) and two isolated vertices $u$ and $v$ by adding negative edge $uv$ and positive edges $uu_1,\dots,uu_s,vv_1,\dots,vv_t.$ Firstly, we prove that if $\dot{G}$ is $C_3^-$-free, then $e(\dot{G})\le \frac{n(n-1)}{2}-(n-2),$ with equality holding if and only if $\dot{G}\sim \dot{G}^{s,t}.$ Moreover, $e^-(\dot{G}^{s,t})\le \lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor\lceil\frac{n-2}{2}\rceil+n-2,$ with equality holding if and only if $\dot{G}^{s,t}= \dot{G}_U^{\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor,\lceil\frac{n-2}{2}\rceil},$ where $\dot{G}_U^{\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor,\lceil\frac{n-2}{2}\rceil}$ is obtained from $\dot{G}^{\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor,\lceil\frac{n-2}{2}\rceil}$ by switching at vertex set $U=\{v,u_1,\dots,u_{\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor}\}.$ Secondly, we prove that if $\dot{G}$ is $C_3^-$-free, then $ρ(\dot{G})\le \frac{1}{2}( \sqrt{ n^2-8}+n-4),$ with equality holding if and only if $\dot{G}\sim \dot{G}^{1,n-3}.$
Circular flows in mono-directed signed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper the concept of circular $r$-flows in a mono-directed signed graph $(G, σ)$ is introduced. That is a pair $(D, f)$, where $D$ is an orientation on $G$ and $f: E(G)\to (-r,r)$ satisfies that $|f(e)|\in [1, r-1]$ for each positive edge $e$ and $|f(e)|\in [0, \frac{r}{2}-1]\cup [\frac{r}{2}+1, r)$ for each negative edge $e$, and the total in-flow equals the total out-flow at each vertex. The circular flow index of a signed graph $(G, σ)$ with no positive bridge, denoted $Φ_c(G,σ)$, is the minimum $r$ such that $(G, σ)$ admits a circular $r$-flow. This is the dual notion of circular colorings and circular chromatic numbers of signed graphs recently introduced in [Circular chromatic number of signed graphs. R. Naserasr, Z. Wang, and X. Zhu. Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 28(2)(2021), \#P2.44], and is distinct from the concept of circular flows in bi-directed graphs associated to signed graphs studied in the literature. We give several equivalent definitions, study basic properties of circular flows in mono-directed signed graphs, explore relations with flows in graphs, and focus on upper bounds on $Φ_c(G,σ)$ in terms of the edge-connectivity of $G$. Meanwhile, we note that for the particular values of $r_{_k}=\frac{2k}{k-1}$, and when restricted to two natural subclasses of signed graphs, the existence of a circular $r_{_k} $-flow is strongly connected with the existence of a modulo $k$-orientation, and in case of planar graphs, based on duality, with the homomorphisms to $C_{-k}$.

Signed Difference Sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $(v,k,λ)$ difference set in a group $G$ of order $v$ is a subset $\{d_1, d_2, \ldots,d_k\}$ of $G$ such that $D=\sum d_i$ in the group ring $\mathbb{Z}[G]$ satisfies $$D D^{-1} = n + λG,$$ where $n=k-λ$. If $D=\sum s_i d_i$, where the $s_i \in \{ \pm 1\}$, satisfies the same equation, we will call it a signed difference set. This generalizes both difference sets (all $s_i=1$) and circulant weighing matrices ($G$ cyclic and $λ=0$). We will show that there are other cases of interest, and give some results on their existence.

Wachs permutations, Bruhat order and weak order
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the partial orders induced on Wachs and signed Wachs permutations by the Bruhat and weak orders of the symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups. We show that these orders are graded, determine their rank function, characterize their ordering and covering relations, and compute their characteristic polynomials, when partially ordered by Bruhat order, and determine their structure explicitly when partially ordered by right weak order.
$q$-enumeration of type B and D Eulerian polynomials based on parity of descents
Published • View PublicationBIB
Carlitz and Scoville in 1973 considered a four variable polynomial that enumerates permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ with respect to the parity of its descents and ascents. In recent work, Pan and Zeng proved a $q$-analogue of Carlitz-Scoville's generating function by enumerating permutations with the above four statistice along with the inversion number. Further, they also proved a type B analogue by enumerating signed permutations with respect to the parity of descents and ascents. In this work we prove a $q$-analogue of the type B result of Pan and Zeng by enumerating permutations in $\mathfrak{B}_n$ with the above four statistics and the type B inversion number. We also obtain a $q$-analogue of the generating function for the type B bivariate alternating descent polynomials. We consider a similar five-variable polynomial in the type D Coxeter groups as well and give their egf. Alternating descents for the type D groups were previously also defined by Remmel, but our definition is slightly different. As a by-product of our proofs, we get bivariate $q$-analogues of Hyatt's recurrences for the type B and type D Eulerian polynomials. Further corollaries of our results are some symmetry relations for these polynomials and $q$-analogues of generating functions for snakes of types B and D.
Counting Involutions on Multicomplex Numbers
We show that there is a bijection between real-linear automorphisms of the multicomplex numbers of order $n$ and signed permutations of length $2^{n-1}$. This allows us to deduce a number of results on the multicomplex numbers, including a formula for the number of involutions on multicomplex spaces which generalizes a recent result on the bicomplex numbers and contrasts drastically with the quaternion case. We also generalize this formula to $r$-involutions and obtain a formula for the number of involutions preserving elementary imaginary units. The proofs rely on new elementary results pertaining to multicomplex numbers that are surprisingly unknown in the literature, including a count and a representation theorem for numbers squaring to $\pm 1$.

The signed Varchenko Determinant for Complexes of Oriented Matroids
We generalize the (signed) Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement to complexes of oriented matroids and show that its determinant has a nice factorization. This extends previous results on hyperplane arrangements and oriented matroids.
