Matroids of Gain Signed Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A signed graph has edge signs. A gain graph has oriented edge gains drawn from a group. We define the combination of the two for the abelian case, in which each oriented edge of a signed graph has a gain from an abelian group, concentrating on the case of the additive group of a field. We develop the elementary graph properties, the associated matroid, and the vector and hyperplanar representations.
Tropical Positivity and Determinantal Varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We initiate the study of positive-tropical generators as positive analogues of the concept of tropical bases. Applying this to the tropicalization of determinantal varieties, we develop criteria for characterizing their positive part. We focus on the study of low-rank matrices, in particular matrices of rank 2 and 3. Moreover, in the case square-matrices of corank 1, we fully classify the signed tropicalization of the determinantal variety, even beyond the positive part.
Edge coloring of graphs of signed class 1 and 2

Recently, Behr introduced a notion of the chromatic index of signed graphs and proved that for every signed graph $(G$, $σ)$ it holds that \[ Δ(G)\leqχ'(G\text{, }σ)\leqΔ(G)+1\text{,} \] where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$ and $χ'$ denotes its chromatic index. In general, the chromatic index of $(G$, $σ)$ depends on both the underlying graph $G$ and the signature $σ$. In the paper we study graphs $G$ for which $χ'(G$, $σ)$ does not depend on $σ$. To this aim we introduce two new classes of graphs, namely $1^\pm$ and $2^\pm$, such that graph $G$ is of class $1^\pm$ (respectively, $2^\pm$) if and only if $χ'(G$, $σ)=Δ(G)$ (respectively, $χ'(G$, $σ)=Δ(G)+1$) for all possible signatures $σ$. We prove that all wheels, necklaces, complete bipartite graphs $K_{r,t}$ with $r\neq t$ and almost all cacti graphs are of class $1^\pm$. Moreover, we give sufficient and necessary conditions for a graph to be of class $2^\pm$, i.e. we show that these graphs must have odd maximum degree and give examples of such graphs with arbitrary odd maximum degree bigger that $1$.

q-Stirling numbers in type B
Stirling numbers, which count partitions of a set and permutations in the symmetric group, have found extensive application in combinatorics, geometry, and algebra. We study analogues and q-analogues of these numbers corresponding to the Coxeter group of type B. In particular, we show how they are related to complete homogeneous and elementary symmetric polynomials; demonstrate how they q-count signed partitions and permutations; compute their ordinary, exponential, and q-exponential generating functions; and prove various identities about them. Ordered analogues of the q-Stirling numbers of the second kind have recently appeared in conjectures of Zabrocki and of Swanson--Wallach concerning the Hilbert series of certain super coinvariant algebras. We provide conjectural bases for these algebras and show that they have the correct Hilbert series.

The monopole-dimer model on Cartesian products of plane graphs
Published in Combinatorial Theory, Volume 3 no. 3, (2023), Article #3, 29pp • View PublicationBIB
The monopole-dimer model is a signed variant of the monomer-dimer model which has determinantal structure. We extend the monopole-dimer model for planar graphs (Math. Phys. Anal. Geom., 2015) to Cartesian products thereof and show that the partition function of this model can be expressed as a determinant of a generalised signed adjacency matrix. We then show that the partition function is independent of the orientations of the planar graphs so long as the orientations are Pfaffian. When these planar graphs are bipartite, we show that the computation of the partition function becomes especially simple. We then give an explicit product formula for the partition function of three-dimensional grid graphs a la Kasteleyn and Temperley--Fischer, which turns out to be fourth power of a polynomial when all grid lengths are even. Finally, we generalise this product formula to $d$ dimensions, again obtaining an explicit product formula. We conclude with a discussion on asymptotic formulas for the free energy and monopole densities.

On adjacency and Laplacian cospectral non-isomorphic signed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ=(G,σ)$ be a signed graph, where $σ$ is the sign function on the edges of $G$. In this paper, we use the operation of partial transpose to obtain non-isomorphic Laplacian cospectral signed graphs. We will introduce two new operations on signed graphs. These operations will establish a relationship between the adjacency spectrum of one signed graph with the Laplacian spectrum of another signed graph. As an application, these new operations will be utilized to construct several pairs of cospectral non-isomorphic signed graphs. Finally, we construct integral signed graphs.

The weak order on the hyperoctahedral group and the monomial basis for the Hopf algebra of signed permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a combinatorial description for the weak order on the hyperoctahedral group. This characterization is then used to analyze the order-theoretic properties of the shifted products of hyperoctahedral groups. It is shown that each shifted product is a disjoint union of some intervals, which can be convex embedded into a hyperoctahedral group. As an application, we investigate the monomial basis for the Hopf algebra $\mathfrak{H}Sym$ of signed permutations, related to the fundamental basis via Möbius inversion on the weak order on hyperoctahedral groups. It turns out that the image of a monomial basis element under the descent map from $\mathfrak{H}Sym$ to the algebra of type $B$ quasi-symmetric functions is either zero or a monomial quasi-symmetric function of type $B$.

Every signed planar graph without cycles of length from 4 to 7 is 3-colorable
Hu and Li investigate the signed graph version of Erd$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$s problem: Is there a constant $c$ such that every signed planar graph without $k$-cycles, where $4\leq k\leq c$, is $3$-colorable and prove that each signed planar graph without cycles of length from 4 to 8 is 3-colorable. We give a very short and simple proof of this result and improve it, based on a recent observation.

Signed spectral Turań type theorems

A signed graph $Σ= (G, σ)$ is a graph where the function $σ$ assigns either $1$ or $-1$ to each edge of the simple graph $G$. The adjacency matrix of $Σ$, denoted by $A(Σ)$, is defined canonically. In a recent paper, Wang et al. extended the eigenvalue bounds of Hoffman and Cvetković for the signed graphs. They proposed an open problem related to the balanced clique number and the largest eigenvalue of a signed graph. We solve a strengthened version of this open problem. As a byproduct, we give alternate proofs for some of the known classical bounds for the least eigenvalues of the unsigned graphs. We extend the Turán's inequality for the signed graphs. Besides, we study the Bollobás and Nikiforov conjecture for the signed graphs and show that the conjecture need not be true for the signed graphs. Nevertheless, the conjecture holds for signed graphs under some assumptions. Finally, we study some of the relationships between the number of signed walks and the largest eigenvalue of a signed graph.

The average Euler-genus of the vertex-amalgamation of signed graphs
In this paper, we first generalize a theorem for counting the number of faces of an oriented embedding of a graph that passing through a given cut-edge set [S. Stahl, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 259 (1980), 129--145] to all surfaces. Then we extend Stahl's bounds for the average genus of the vertex-amalgamation of graphs [S. Stahl, Discrete Math. 142 (1995), 235--245] to signed graphs.

Several Roman domination graph invariants on Kneser graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 25:1, Graph Theory (May 26, 2023) dmtcs:10506 • View PublicationBIB
This paper considers the following three Roman domination graph invariants on Kneser graphs: Roman domination, total Roman domination, and signed Roman domination. For Kneser graph $K_{n,k}$, we present exact values for Roman domination number $γ_{R}(K_{n,k})$ and total Roman domination number $γ_{tR}(K_{n,k})$ proving that for $n\geqslant k(k+1)$, $γ_{R}(K_{n,k}) =γ_{tR}(K_{n,k}) = 2(k+1)$. For signed Roman domination number $γ_{sR}(K_{n,k})$, the new lower and upper bounds for $K_{n,2}$ are provided: we prove that for $n\geqslant 12$, the lower bound is equal to 2, while the upper bound depends on the parity of $n$ and is equal to 3 if $n$ is odd, and equal to $5$ if $n$ is even. For graphs of smaller dimensions, exact values are found by applying exact methods from literature.

A note on shortest circuit cover of 3-edge colorable cubic signed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A {sign-circuit cover} $\mathcal{F}$ of a signed graph $(G, σ)$ is a family of sign-circuits which covers all edges of $(G, σ)$. The shortest sign-circuit cover problem was initiated by Má$\check{\text{c}}$ajová, Raspaud, Rollová, and Škoviera (JGT 2016) and received many attentions in recent years. In this paper, we show that every flow-admissible 3-edge colorable cubic signed graph $(G, σ)$ has a sign-circuit cover with length at most $\frac{20}{9} |E(G)|$.

Permutation-bipartition pairs
Permutation-partition pairs were introduced by Stahl in 1980. These pairs are generalizations of graphs and graphs on surfaces. They were used to solve some problems for orientable embeddings of graphs. In this paper, we introduce a particular type of permutation-partition pair, called permutation-bipartition pair, which can be seen as generalizations of signed graphs and signed graph embeddings. Some applications are given.

Homomorphisms of (n,m)-graphs with respect to generalised switch
Published • View PublicationBIB
The study of homomorphisms of $(n,m)$-graphs, that is, adjacency preserving vertex mappings of graphs with $n$ types of arcs and $m$ types of edges was initiated by Nešetřil and Raspaud in 2000. Later, some attempts were made to generalize the switch operation that is popularly used in the study of signed graphs, and study its effect on the above mentioned homomorphism. In this article, we too provide a generalization of the switch operation on $(n,m)$-graphs, which to the best of our knowledge, encapsulates all the previously known generalizations as special cases. We approach the study of homomorphisms with respect to the switch operation axiomatically. We prove some fundamental results that are essential tools in the further study of this topic. In the process of proving the fundamental results, we have provided yet another solution to an open problem posed by Klostermeyer and MacGillivray in 2004. We also prove the existence of a categorical product for $(n,m)$-graphs with respect to a particular class of generalized switch which implicitly uses category theory. This is a counter intuitive solution as the number of vertices in the Categorical product of two $(n,m)$-graphs on $p$ and $q$ vertices has a multiple of $pq$ many vertices, where the multiple depends on the switch. This solves an open question asked by Brewster in the PEPS 2012 workshop as a corollary. We also provide a way to calculate the product explicitly, and prove general properties of the product. We define the analog of chromatic number for $(n,m)$-graphs with respect to generalized switch and explore the interrelations between chromatic numbers with respect to different switch operations. We find the value of this chromatic number for the family of forests using group theoretic notions.

Biadjoint Scalars and Associahedra from Residues of Generalized Amplitudes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the Grassmannian formulation of the S-matrix for planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills, $N^{k-2}MHV$ scattering amplitudes for $k$ negative and $n-k$ positive helicity gluons can be expressed, by an application of the global residue theorem, as a signed sum over a collection of $(k-2)(n-k-2)$-dimensional residues. These residues are supported on certain positroid subvarieties of the Grassmannian $G(k,n)$. In this paper, we replace the Grassmannian $G(3,n)$ with its torus quotient, the moduli space of $n$ points in the projective plane in general position, and planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with generalized biadjoint scalar amplitudes $m^{(3)}_n$ as introduced by Cachazo-Early-Guevara-Mizera (CEGM). Whereas in the Grassmannian formulation residues of the Parke-Taylor form correspond to individual BCFW, or on-shell diagrams, we show that each such $(n-5)$-dimensional residue of $m^{(3)}_n$ is an entire biadjoint scalar partial amplitude $m^{(2)}_n$, that is a sum over all tree-level Feynman diagrams for a fixed planar order. We propose a generalization which would give rise to identifications of $m^{(2)}_n$ inside $m^{(k)}_n$ for $k\ge 4$, via $(k-2)(n-k-2)$-dimensional residues. Our proof for $k=3$ uses the CEGM formula for $m^{(3)}_n$; it predicts a new Minkowski sum realization of the associahedron in terms of certain positroid polytopes in the second hypersimplex $Δ_{2,n}$.

Weighted Ehrhart series and a type-$\mathsf{B}$ analogue of a formula of MacMahon
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a formula for a generalisation of the Eulerian polynomial, namely the generating polynomial of the joint distribution of major index and descent statistic over the set of signed multiset permutations. It has a description in terms of the $h^*$-polynomial of a certain polytope. Moreover, we associate a family of polytopes to (generalised) Eulerian polynomials of types $\mathsf{A}$ and $\mathsf{B}$. Using this connection, properties of the generalised Eulerian numbers of types $\mathsf{A}$ and $\mathsf{B}$, such as palindromicity and unimodality, are reflected in certain properties of the associated polytope. We also present results on generalising the connection between descent polynomials and polytopes to coloured (multiset) permutations.

Graph coloring-related properties of (generating functions of) Hodge-Deligne polynomials
Motivated by a connection between the topology of (generalized) configuration spaces and chromatic polynomials, we show that generating functions of Hodge-Deligne polynomials of quasiprojective varieties and colorings of acyclic directed graphs with the complete graph $K_n$ as the underlying undirected graph. In order to do this, we combine an interpretation of Crew-Spirkl for plethysms involving chromatic symmetric polynomials using colorings of directed acyclic graphs to plethystic exponentials often appearing Hodge-Deligne polynomials of varieties. Applying this to a recent result of Florentino-Nozad-Zamora, we find a connection between $GL_n$-character varieties of finitely presented groups and colorings of these "complete" directed graphs by (signed) variables used in the Hodge-Deligne polynomials of the irreducible representations. As a consequence of the constructions used, generators of Hodge-Deligne polynomials carry over to generators of the plethystic exponentials as a power series in a way that is compatible with this graph coloring interpretation and gives interesting combinatorial information that simplifies when we consider Hodge-Deligne polynomials of birationally equivalent varieties to be equivalent. Finally, we give an application of methods used to symmetries of Hodge-Deligne polynomials of varieties and their configuration spaces and their relation to chromatic symmetric polynomials.

A Note on the Critical Groups of Strongly Regular Graphs and Their Generalizations
Published in Innov. Incidence Geom. 19 (2022) 95-109 • View PublicationBIB
We determine the maximum order of an element in the critical group of a strongly regular graph, and show that it achieves the spectral bound due to Lorenzini. We extend the result to all graphs with exactly two non-zero Laplacian eigenvalues, and study the signed graph version of the problem. We also study the monodromy pairing on the critical groups, and suggest an approach to study the structure of these groups using the pairing.
Short Topological Decompositions of Non-Orientable Surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we investigate short topological decompositions of non-orientable surfaces and provide algorithms to compute them. Our main result is a polynomial-time algorithm that for any graph embedded in a non-orientable surface computes a canonical non-orientable system of loops so that any loop from the canonical system intersects any edge of the graph in at most 30 points. The existence of such short canonical systems of loops was well known in the orientable case and an open problem in the non-orientable case. Our proof techniques combine recent work of Schaefer-Štefankovič with ideas coming from computational biology, specifically from the signed reversal distance algorithm of Hannenhalli-Pevzner. The existence of short canonical non-orientable systems of loops confirms a special case of a conjecture of Negami on the joint crossing number of two embeddable graphs. We also provide a correction for an argument of Negami bounding the joint crossing number of two non-orientable graph embeddings.

On signed graphs whose spectral radius does not exceed $\sqrt{2+\sqrt{5}}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Hoffman program with respect to any real or complex square matrix $M$ associated to a graph $G$ stems from Hoffman's pioneering work on the limit points for the spectral radius of adjacency matrices of graphs does not exceed $\sqrt{2+\sqrt{5}}$. A signed graph $\dot{G}=(G,σ)$ is a pair $(G,σ),$ where $G=(V,E)$ is a simple graph and $σ: E(G)\rightarrow \{+1,-1\}$ is the sign function. In this paper, we study the Hoffman program of signed graphs. Here, all signed graphs whose spectral radius does not exceed $\sqrt{2+\sqrt{5}}$ will be identified.
