Equivalence classes of nodes in trees and rational generating functions
Let $c_n$ denote the number of nodes at a distance $n$ from the root of a rooted tree. A criterion for proving the rationality and computing the rational generating function of the sequence $\{c_n\}$ is described. This criterion is applied to counting the number of conjugacy classes of commuting tuples in finite groups and the number of isomorphism classes of representations of polynomial algebras over finite fields. The method for computing the rational generating functions, when applied to the study of point configurations in finite sets, gives rise to some classical combinatorial results on Bell numbers and Stirling numbers of the second kind. When applied to the study of vector configurations in a finite vector space, it reveals a connection between counting such configurations and Gaussian binomial coefficients.

On the number of antichains of sets in a finite universe
Properties of intervals in the lattice of antichains of subsets of a universe of finite size are investigated. New objects and quantities in this lattice are defined. Expressions and numerical values are deduced for the number of connected antichains and the number of fully distinguishing antichains. The latter establish a connection with Stirling numbers of the second kind. Decomposition properties of intervals in the lattice of antichains are proven. A new operator allowing partitioning the full lattice in intervals derived from lower dimensional sub-lattices is introduced. Special posets underlying an interval of antichains are defined. The poset allows the derivation of a powerful formula for the size of an interval. This formula allows computing intervals in the six dimensional space. Combinatorial coefficients allowing another decomposition of the full lattice are defined. In some specific cases, related to connected components in graphs, these coefficients can be efficiently computed. This formula allows computing the size of the lattice of order 8 efficiently. This size is the number of Dedekind of order 8, the largest one known so far.
Generalized $q$-Stirling numbers and normal ordering
The normal ordering coefficients of strings consisting of $V,U$ which satisfy $UV=qVU+hV^s$ ($s\in\mathbb N$) are considered. These coefficients are studied in two contexts: first, as a multiple of a sequence satisfying a generalized recurrence, and second, as $q$-analogues of rook numbers under the row creation rule introduced by Goldman and Haglund. A number of properties are derived, including recurrences, expressions involving other $q$-analogues and explicit formulas. We also give a Dobinsky-type formula for the associated Bell numbers and the corresponding extension of Spivey's Bell number formula. The coefficients, viewed as rook numbers, are extended to the case $s\in\mathbb R$ via a modified rook model.

Completely effective error bounds for Stirling Numbers of the first and second kind via Poisson Approximation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide completely effective error estimates for Stirling numbers of the first and second kind, denoted by $s(n,m)$ and $S(n,m)$, respectively. These bounds are useful for values of $m \geq n - O(\sqrt{n})$. An application of our Theorem 5 yields, for example, \[ s(10^{12},\ 10^{12}-2\times 10^6)/10^{35664464} \in [ 1.87669, 1.876982 ], \] \[ S(10^{12},\ 10^{12}-2\times 10^6)/10^{35664463} \in [ 1.30121, 1.306975 ]. \] The bounds are obtained via Chen-Stein Poisson approximation, using an interpretation of Stirling numbers as the number of ways of placing non-attacking rooks on a chess board. As a corollary to Theorem 5, summarized in Proposition 1, we obtain two simple and explicit asymptotic formulas, one for each of $s(n,m)$ and $S(n,m)$, for the parametrization $m = n - t\, n^a$, $0 \leq a \leq \frac{1}{2}.$ These asymptotic formulas agree with the ones originally observed by Moser and Wyman in the range $0<a<\frac{1}{2}$, and they connect with a recent asymptotic expansion by Louchard for $\frac{1}{2}<a < 1$, hence filling the gap at $a = \frac{1}{2}$. We also provide a generalization applicable to rook and file numbers.

Some combinatorial arrays related to the Lotka-Volterra system
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the connection between the Lotka-Volterra system and combinatorics. We study several context-free grammars associated with the Lotka-Volterra system. Some combinatorial arrays, involving the Stirling numbers of the second kind and Eulerian numbers, are generated by these context-free grammars. In particular, we present grammatical characterization of some statistics on cyclically ordered partitions.

Sur une proprieté des polynômes de Stirling
In this article, we give a positive answer to a question posed in 1960 by D.S. Mitrinović and R.S. Mitrinović (see: D.S. Mitrinović et R.S. Mitrinović, Tableaux qui fournissent des polynômes de Stirling, Publications de la Faculté d'Electronique, série: Mathématiques et physique, 34, (1960).1-23.) concerned the Stirling numbers of the first kind $s(n,k).$ We prove that for all $k\geq 2$ there exist an integer $m_{k}$ and a primitive polynomial $P_{k}(x)$ in $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ such that for all $n\geq k$, $s(n,n-k)=\frac{1}{m_{k}}\binom{n}{k+1}\left(n(n-1)\right) ^{\mathop{\rm mod}\nolimits (k,2)}P_{k}(n)$. Moreover for all $k\geq1$, $P_{2k}(0)=P_{2k+1}(0)$.

An Erd{\H o}s-Ko-Rado theorem for permutations with fixed number of cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $S_{n}$ denote the set of permutations of $[n]=\{1,2,\dots, n\}$. For a positive integer $k$, define $S_{n,k}$ to be the set of all permutations of $[n]$ with exactly $k$ disjoint cycles, i.e., \[ S_{n,k} = \{π\in S_{n}: π= c_{1}c_{2} \cdots c_{k}\},\] where $c_1,c_2,\dots ,c_k$ are disjoint cycles. The size of $S_{n,k}$ is given by $\left [ \begin{matrix}n\\ k \end{matrix}\right]=(-1)^{n-k}s(n,k)$, where $s(n,k)$ is the Stirling number of the first kind. A family $\mathcal{A} \subseteq S_{n,k}$ is said to be $t$-{\em intersecting} if any two elements of $\mathcal{A}$ have at least $t$ common cycles. In this paper, we show that, given any positive integers $k,t$ with $k\geq t+1$, there exists an integer $n_0=n_0(k,t)$, such that for all $n\geq n_0$, if $\mathcal{A} \subseteq S_{n,k}$ is $t$-intersecting, then \[ |\mathcal{A}| \le \left [ \begin{matrix}n-t\\ k-t \end{matrix}\right],\] with equality if and only if $\mathcal{A}$ is the stabiliser of $t$ fixed points.

Some applications of the chromatic polynomials
The chromatic polynomials are studied by several authors and have important applications in different frameworks, specially, in graph theory and enumerative combinatorics. The aim of this work is to establish some properties of the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial of a graph. Three applications on restricted Stirling numbers of the second kind are given.

2-adic Stirling functions and their zeros

Let $P_n(x)=\frac1{n!}\sum\binom n{2i+1}(2i+1)^x$. This extends to a continuous function on the 2-adic integers, the $n$th 2-adic partial Stirling function. We show that $(-1)^{n+1}P_n$ is the only 2-adically continuous approximation to $S(x,n)$, the Stirling number of the second kind. We present extensive information about the zeros of $P_n$, for which there are many interesting patterns. We prove that if $e\ge2$ and $2^e+1\le n\le 2^e+4$, then $P_n$ has exactly $2^{e-1}$ zeros, one in each mod $2^{e-1}$ congruence. We study the relationship between the zeros of $P_{2^e+Δ}$ and $P_Δ$, for $1\leΔ\le 2^e$, and the convergence of $P_{2^e+Δ}(x)$ as $e\to\infty$.

Multivariate Stirling Polynomials of the first and second kind
Published in Discrete Mathematics 338 (2015), 2462-2484 • View PublicationBIB
Two doubly indexed families of homogeneous and isobaric polynomials in several indeterminates are considered: the (partial) exponential Bell polynomials $B_{n,k}$ and a new family $S_{n,k}$ such that $X_1^{-(2n-1)}S_{n,k}$ and $B_{n,k}$ obey an inversion law which generalizes that of the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind. Both polynomial families appear as Lie coefficients in expansions of certain derivatives of higher order. Substituting $D^j(\varphi)$ (the $j$-th derivative of a fixed function $\varphi$) in place of the indeterminates $X_j$ shows that both $S_{n,k}$ and $B_{n,k}$ are differential polynomials depending on $\varphi$ and on its inverse $\overline{\varphi}$, respectively. Some new light is shed thereby on Comtet's solution of the Lagrange inversion problem in terms of the Bell polynomials. According to Haiman and Schmitt that solution is essentially the antipode on the Faà di Bruno Hopf algebra. It can be represented by $X_1^{-(2n-1)}S_{n,1}$. Moreover, a general expansion formula that holds for the whole family $S_{n,k}$ ($1\leq k\leq n$) is established together with a closed expression for the coefficients of $S_{n,k}$. Several important properties of the Stirling numbers are demonstrated to be special cases of relations between the corresponding polynomials. As a non-trivial example, a Schlömilch-type formula is derived expressing $S_{n,k}$ in terms of the Bell polynomials $B_{n,k}$, and vice versa.
