Stirling numbers of forests and cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, the {\em graphical Stirling number} $S(G,k)$ is the number of partitions of the vertex set of $G$ into $k$ non-empty independent sets. Equivalently it is the number of proper colorings of $G$ that use exactly $k$ colors, with two colorings identified if they differ only on the names of the colors. If $G$ is the empty graph on $n$ vertices then $S(G,k)$ reduces to $S(n,k)$, the familiar Stirling number of the second kind. In this note we first consider Stirling numbers of forests. We show that if $(F^{c(n)}_n)_{n\geq 0}$ is any sequence of forests with $F^{c(n)}_n$ having $n$ vertices and $c(n)=o(\sqrt{n/\log n})$ components, and if $X^{c(n)}_n$ is a random variable that takes value $k$ with probability proportional to $S(F^{c(n)}_n,k)$ (that is, $X^{c(n)}_n$ is the number of classes in a uniformly chosen partition of $F^{c(n)}_n$ into non-empty independent sets), then $X^{c(n)}_n$ is asymptotically normal, meaning that suitably normalized it tends in distribution to the standard normal. This generalizes a seminal result of Harper on the ordinary Stirling numbers. Along the way we give recurrences for calculating the generating functions of the sequences $(S(F^c_n,k))_{k \geq 0}$, show that these functions have all real zeroes, and exhibit three different interlacing patterns between the zeroes of pairs of consecutive generating functions. We next consider Stirling numbers of cycles. We establish asymptotic normality for the number of classes in a uniformly chosen partition of $C_n$ (the cycle on $n$ vertices) into non-empty independent sets. We give a recurrence for calculating the generating function of the sequence $(S(C_n,k))_{k \geq 0}$, and use this to give a direct proof of a log-concavity result that had previously only been arrived at in a very indirect way.

Congruence classes of 2-adic valuations of Stirling numbers of the second kind
We analyze congruence classes of $S(n,k)$, the Stirling numbers of the second kind, modulo powers of 2. This analysis provides insight into a conjecture posed by Amdeberhan, Manna and Moll, which those authors established for $k\le5$. We provide a framework that can be used to justify the conjecture by computational means, which we then complete for $k=5, 6,..., 20$.

Eight interesting identities involving the exponential function, derivatives, and Stirling numbers of the second kind

In the paper, the author establishes some identities which show that the functions $\frac1{(1-e^{\pm t})^k}$ and the derivatives $\bigl(\frac1{e^{\pm t}-1}\bigr)^{(i)}$ can be expressed each other by linear combinations with coefficients involving the combinatorial numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind, where $t\ne0$ and $i,k\in\mathbb{N}$.

Pascal triangle, Stirling numbers and the unique invariance of the Euler characteristic
We use some basic properties of binomial and Stirling numbers to prove that the Euler characteristic is, essentially, the unique numerical topological invariant for compact polyhedra which can be expressed as a linear combination of the numbers of faces of triangulations. We obtain this result converting it into an eigenvalue problem.
The Jacobi-Stirling Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Jacobi-Stirling numbers were discovered as a result of a problem involving the spectral theory of powers of the classical second-order Jacobi differential expression. Specifically, these numbers are the coefficients of integral composite powers of the Jacobi expression in Lagrangian symmetric form. Quite remarkably, they share many properties with the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind which, as shown in LW, are the coefficients of integral powers of the Laguerre differential expression. In this paper, we establish several properties of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers and its companions including combinatorial interpretations thereby extending and supplementing known contributions to the literature of Andrews-Littlejohn, Andrews-Gawronski-Littlejohn, Egge, Gelineau-Zeng, and Mongelli.

Mellin Transforms of the Generalized Fractional Integrals and Derivatives
Published in Applied Mathematics and Computation 257 (2015) 566-580 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain the Mellin transforms of the generalized fractional integrals and derivatives that generalize the Riemann-Liouville and the Hadamard fractional integrals and derivatives. We also obtain interesting results, which combine generalized $δ_{r,m}$ operators with generalized Stirling numbers and Lah numbers. For example, we show that $δ_{1,1}$ corresponds to the Stirling numbers of the $2^{nd}$ kind and $δ_{2,1}$ corresponds to the unsigned Lah numbers. Further, we show that the two operators $δ_{r,m}$ and $δ_{m,r}$, $r,m\in\mathbb{N}$, generate the same sequence given by the recurrence relation \[ S(n,k)=\sum_{i=0}^r \big(m+(m-r)(n-2)+k-i-1\big)_{r-i}\binom{r}{i} S(n-1,k-i), \;\; 0< k\leq n, \] with $S(0,0)=1$ and $S(n,0)=S(n,k)=0$ for $n>0$ and $1+min\{r,m\}(n-1) < k $ or $k\leq 0$. Finally, we define a new class of sequences for $r \in \{\frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{5}, \frac{1}{6}, ...\}$ and in turn show that $δ_{\frac{1}{2},1}$ corresponds to the generalized Laguerre polynomials.

Divisibility by 2 of partial Stirling numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partial Stirling numbers T_n(k) used here are defined as the sum over odd values of i of (n choose i) i^k. Their 2-exponents nu(T_n(k)) are important in algebraic topology. We provide many specific results, applying to all values of n, stating that, for all k in a certain congruence class mod 2^t, nu(T_n(k)) = nu(k - k0) + c0, where k0 is a 2-adic integer and c0 a positive integer. Our analysis involves several new general results for nu(sum (n choose 2i+1) i^j), the proofs of which involve a new family of polynomials. Following Clarke, we interpret T_n as a function on the 2-adic integers, and the 2-adic integers k0 described above as the zeros of these functions.

Formal residue and computer proofs of combinatorial identities
The coefficient of x^{-1} of a formal Laurent series f(x) is called the formal residue of f(x). Many combinatorial numbers can be represented by the formal residues of hypergeometric terms. With these representations and the extended Zeilberger's algorithm, we generate recurrence relations for summations involving combinatorial sequences such as Stirling numbers. As examples, we give computer proofs of several known identities and derive some new identities. The applicability of this method is also studied.

Explicit formula for generalization of Poly-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials with a,b,c parameters
Published in Journal of Classical Analysis Volume 6, Number 2 (2015), 119-135 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we investigate special generalized Bernoulli polynomials with a,b,c parameters that generalize classical Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. The present paper deals with some recurrence formulae for the generalization of poly-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials with a,b,c parameters. Poly-Bernoulli numbers satisfy certain recurrence relationships which are used in many computations involving poly-Bernoulli numbers. Obtaining a closed formula for generalization of poly-Bernoulli numbers with a,b,c paramerers therefore seems to be a natural and important problem. By using the generalization of poly-Bernoulli polynomials with a,b,c parameters of negative index we define symmetrized generalization of poly-Bernoulli polynomials with a,b parameters of two variables and we prove duality property for them. Also by stirling numbers of the second kind we will find a closed formula for them. Furthermore we generalize the Arakawa-Kaneko Zeta functions and by using the Laplace-Mellin integral, we define generalization of Arakawa-Kaneko Zeta functions with a,b parameters and we obtain an interpolation formula for the generalization of poly-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials with a,b parameters. Furthermore we present a link between this type of Zeta functions and Dirichlet series. By our interpolation formula, we will interpolate the generalization of Arakawa-Kaneko Zeta functions with a,b parameters.
Asymptotically normal distribution of some tree families relevant for phylogenetics, and of partitions without singletons
P.L. Erdos and L.A. Szekely [Adv. Appl. Math. 10(1989), 488-496] gave a bijection between rooted semilabeled trees and set partitions. L.H. Harper's results [Ann. Math. Stat. 38(1967), 410-414] on the asymptotic normality of the Stirling numbers of the second kind translates into asymptotic normality of rooted semilabeled trees with given number of vertices, when the number of internal vertices varies. The Erdos-Szekely bijection specializes to a bijection between phylogenetic trees and set partitions with classes of size \geq 2. We consider modified Stirling numbers of the second kind that enumerate partitions of a fixed set into a given number of classes of size \geq 2, and obtain their asymptotic normality as the number of classes varies. The Erdos- Szekely bijection translates this result into the asymptotic normality of the number of phylogenetic trees with given number of vertices, when the number of leaves varies. We also obtain asymptotic normality of the number of phylogenetic trees with given number of leaves and varying number of internal vertices, which make more sense to students of phylogeny. By the Erdos-Szekely bijection this means the asymptotic normality of the number of partitions of n + m elements into m classes of size \geq 2, when n is fixed and m varies. The proofs are adaptations of the techniques of L.H. Harper [ibid.]. We provide asymptotics for the relevant expectations and variances with error term O(1/n).

Generalized Stirling Numbers and Generalized Stirling Functions
Here presented is a unified approach to Stirling numbers and their generalizations as well as generalized Stirling functions by using generalized factorial functions, $k$-Gamma functions, and generalized divided difference. Previous well-known extensions of Stirling numbers due to Riordan, Carlitz, Howard, Charalambides-Koutras, Gould-Hopper, Hsu-Shiue, Tsylova Todorov, Ahuja-Enneking, and Stirling functions introduced by Butzer and Hauss, Butzer, Kilbas, and Trujilloet and others are included as particular cases of our generalization. Some basic properties related to our general pattern such as their recursive relations and generating functions are discussed. Three algorithms for calculating the Stirling numbers based on our generalization are also given, which include a comprehensive algorithm using the characterization of Riordan arrays.

Formal Iterated Logarithms and Exponentials and the Stirling Numbers
We calculate the formal analytic expansions of certain formal translations in a space of formal iterated logarithmic and exponential variables. The results show how the algebraic structure naturally involves the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds, and certain extensions of these, which appear as expansion coefficients.

Fibonacci polynomials, generalized Stirling numbers, and Bernoulli, Genocchi and tangent numbers
We study matrices which transform the sequence of Fibonacci or Lucas polynomials with even index to those with odd index and vice versa. They turn out to be intimately related to generalized Stirling numbers and to Bernoulli, Genocchi and tangent numbers and give rise to various identities between these numbers. There is also a close connection with the Akiyama-Tanigawa algorithm.

The strong-connectivity of word-representable digraphs
A word-graph Gw is a digraph represented by a word w such that the vertex-set V(Gw) is the alphabet of w and the edge-set E(Gw) is determined by non-identical adjacent letter pairs in w. In this paper we study the strong-connectivity of word-graphs. Our main result is that the number of strongly connected word-graphs represented by l-words of over an n-alphabet can be expressed via a recurrence relation T(l,n) on the Stirling numbers of the second kind using a link between word partitions and digraph connectivity.

A Giambelli formula for the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of type A Peterson varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main result of this note is a Giambelli formula for the Peterson Schubert classes in the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of a type $A$ Peterson variety. Our results depend on the Monk formula for the equivariant structure constants for the Peterson Schubert classes derived by Harada and Tymoczko. In addition, we give proofs of two facts observed by H. Naruse: firstly, that some constants which appear in the multiplicative structure of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties are Stirling numbers of the second kind, and secondly, that the Peterson Schubert classes satisfy a stability property in a sense analogous to the stability of the classical equivariant Schubert classes in the $T$-equivariant cohomology of the flag variety.

Some remarks about the derivative operator and generalized Stirling numbers

Studying expressions of the form $(f(x)D)^p$, where $D={\displaystyle \frac{d}{dx}}$ is the derivative operator, goes back to Scherk's Ph.D. thesis in 1823. We show that this can be extended as ${\displaystyle\sum γ_{p;a} (f^{(0)})^{a(0)+1} (f^{(1)})^{a(1)}...(f^{(p-1)})^{a(p-1)}D^{p-\sum_i i a(i)}}$}, where the summation is taken over the $p$-tuples $(a_0, a_1,..., a_{p-1})$, satisfying $\sum_{i}a(i)=p-1,\, \sum_{i}i a(i)<p$, $f^{(i)}=D^i f$ and $γ_{p;a}$ is the number of increasing trees on the vertex set $[0, p]$ having $a(0)+1$ leaves and having $a(i)$ vertices with $i$ children for $0<i<p$. Thus, previously known results about increasing trees, lead us to some equalities containing coefficients $γ_{p;a}$. In the sequel, we consider the expansion of $(x^k D)^p$ and coefficients appearing there, which are called generalized Stirling numbers by physicists. Some results about these coefficients and their inverses are discussed through bijective methods. Particularly, we introduce and use the notion of $(p, k)$-forest in these arguments.

Generator Sets for the Alternating Group
Although the alternating group is an index 2 subgroup of the symmetric group, there is no generating set that gives a Coxeter structure on it. Various generating sets were suggested and studied by Bourbaki, Mitsuhashi, Regev-Roichman, Vershik-Vserminov and others. In a recent work of Brenti- Reiner-Roichman it is explained that palindromes in Mitsuhashi's generating set play a role similar to that of re ections in a Coxeter system. We study in detail the length function with respect to the set of palindromes. Results include an explicit combinatorial description, a generating function, and an interesting connection to Broder's restricted Stirling numbers.

Discretized configurations and partial partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the discretized configuration space of $k$ points in the $n$-simplex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension $n-k+1$. This space is homeomorphic to the order complex of the poset of ordered partial partitions of $\{1,...,n+1\}$ with exactly $k$ parts. We compute the exponential generating function for the Euler characteristic of this space in two different ways, thereby obtaining a topological proof of a combinatorial recurrence satisfied by the Stirling numbers of the second kind.
