On some expansions for the Euler Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function
Published in Grzegorz Rzadkowski, On some expansions for the Euler Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function, J. Comp. Appl. Math. 236 (2012) pp. 3710-3719 • View PublicationBIB
In the present paper we introduce some expansions, based on the falling factorials, for the Euler Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function. In the proofs we use the Faá di Bruno formula, Bell polynomials, potential polynomials, Mittag-Leffler polynomials, derivative polynomials and special numbers (Eulerian numbers and Stirling numbers of both kinds). We investigate the rate of convergence of the series and give some numerical examples.

Bijective enumeration of some colored permutations given by the product of two long cycles
Published in Discrete Mathematics 312 (2012), no. 2, pp. 279-292 • Search Publication
Let $γ_n$ be the permutation on $n$ symbols defined by $γ_n = (1\ 2\...\ n)$. We are interested in an enumerative problem on colored permutations, that is permutations $β$ of $n$ in which the numbers from 1 to $n$ are colored with $p$ colors such that two elements in a same cycle have the same color. We show that the proportion of colored permutations such that $γ_n β^{-1}$ is a long cycle is given by the very simple ratio $\frac{1}{n- p+1}$. Our proof is bijective and uses combinatorial objects such as partitioned hypermaps and thorn trees. This formula is actually equivalent to the proportionality of the number of long cycles $α$ such that $γ_nα$ has $m$ cycles and Stirling numbers of size $n+1$, an unexpected connection previously found by several authors by means of algebraic methods. Moreover, our bijection allows us to refine the latter result with the cycle type of the permutations.

The asymptotic expansion for the factorial and Lagrange inversion formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain an explicit simple formula for the coefficients of the asymptotic expansion for the factorial of a natural number,in terms of derivatives of powers of an elementary function. The unique explicit expression for the coefficients that appears to be known is that in the book by L. Comtet, which is given in terms of sums of associated Stirling numbers of the first kind. By considering the bivariate generating function of the associated Stirling numbers of the second kind, another expression for the coefficients in terms of them follows also from our analysis. Comparison with Comtet's expression yields combinatorial identities between associated Stirling numbers of first and second kind. It suggests by analogy another possible formula for the coefficients, in terms of a function involving the logarithm, that in fact proves to be true. The resulting coefficients, as well as the first ones are identified via the Lagrange inversion formula as the odd coefficients of the inverse of a pair of formal series, which permits us to obtain also some recurrences.

Multiple analogues of binomial coefficients and related families of special numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct multiple $qt$-binomial coefficients and related multiple analogues of several celebrated families of special numbers in this paper. These multidimensional generalizations include the first and the second kind of $qt$-Stirling numbers, $qt$-Bell numbers, $qt$-Bernoulli numbers, $qt$-Catalan numbers and the $qt$--Fibonacci numbers. In the course of developing main properties of these extensions, we prove results that are significant in their own rights such as certain probability measures on the set of integer partitions.

Ladder Operators and Endomorphisms in Combinatorial Physics
Published in DMTCS 12, 2 (2010) 1 • Search Publication
Starting with the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra, fundamental to quantum physics, we first show how the ordering of the non-commuting operators intrinsic to that algebra gives rise to generalizations of the classical Stirling Numbers of Combinatorics. These may be expressed in terms of infinite, but {\em row-finite}, matrices, which may also be considered as endomorphisms of $\C[[x]]$. This leads us to consider endomorphisms in more general spaces, and these in turn may be expressed in terms of generalizations of the ladder-operators familiar in physics.

Combinatorial interpretations of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Jacobi-Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds were introduced in 2006 in the spectral theory and are polynomial refinements of the Legendre-Stirling numbers. Andrews and Littlejohn have recently given a combinatorial interpretation for the second kind of the latter numbers. Noticing that these numbers are very similar to the classical central factorial numbers, we give combinatorial interpretations for the Jacobi-Stirling numbers of both kinds, which provide a unified treatment of the combinatorial theories for the two previous sequences and also for the Stirling numbers of both kinds.

Derivative Polynomials for tanh, tan, sech and sec in Explicit Form
Published in Fibonacci Quarterly, 45.4 (2007), 291-303 • Search Publication
The derivative polynomials for the hyperbolic and trigonometric tangent, cotangent and secant are found in explicit form, where the coefficients are given in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind. As application, some integrals are evaluated and the reflection formula for the polygamma function is written in explicit form.

Let K_n denote the smaller mode of the nth row of Stirling numbers of the second kind S(n, k). Using a probablistic argument, it is shown that for all n>=2, [exp(w(n))]-2<=K_n<=[exp(w(n))]+1, where [x] denotes the integer part of x, and w(n) is Lambert's W-function.

On Non-central Stirling Numbers of the First Kind
It is shown in this note that non-central Stirling numbers s(n,k,a) of the first kind naturally appear in the expansion of derivatives of the product of a power function and a logarithn function. We first obtain a recurrence relation for these numbers, and then, using Leibnitz rule we obtain an explicit formula for these numbers. We also obtain an explicit formula for s(n,1,a), and then derive several combinatorial identities related to these numbers.

On powers of Stirling matrices
The powers of matrices with Stirling number-coefficients are investigated. It is revealed that the elements of these matrices have a number of properties of the ordinary Stirling numbers. Moreover, "higher order" Bell, Fubini and Eulerian numbers can be defined. Hence we give a new interpretation for E. T. Bell's iterated exponential integers. In addition, it is worth to note that these numbers appear in combinatorial physics, in the problem of the normal ordering of quantum field theoretical operators.

Falling Factorials, Generating Functions, and Conjoint Ranking Tables
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, 12 (2009), Article 09.7.8 • Search Publication
We investigate the coefficients generated by expressing the falling factorial $(xy)_k$ as a linear combination of falling factorial products $(x)_l (y)_m$ for $l,m =1,...,k$. Algebraic and combinatoric properties of these coefficients are discussed, including recurrence relations, closed-form formulae, relations with Stirling numbers, and a combinatorial characterization in terms of conjoint ranking tables.
Boolean complexes for Ferrers graphs
In this paper we provide an explicit formula for calculating the boolean number of a Ferrers graph. By previous work of the last two authors, this determines the homotopy type of the boolean complex of the graph. Specializing to staircase shapes, we show that the boolean numbers of the associated Ferrers graphs are the Genocchi numbers of the second kind, and obtain a relation between the Legendre-Stirling numbers and the Genocchi numbers of the second kind. In another application, we compute the boolean number of a complete bipartite graph, corresponding to a rectangular Ferrers shape, which is expressed in terms of the Stirling numbers of the second kind. Finally, we analyze the complexity of calculating the boolean number of a Ferrers graph using these results and show that it is a significant improvement over calculating by edge recursion.

Wilf conjecture
Let S(n,k) be the Stirling number of the second kind. Wilf conjectured that the alternating sum of S(n,k) for k from 0 to n is not zero for all n>2. In this paper, we prove that Wilf conjecture is true except at most one number with the properties of weighted Motzkin number.

On a non-combinatorial definition of Stirling numbers
In Combinatorics Stirling numbers may be defined in several ways. One such definition is given in [1], where an extensive consideration of Stirling numbers is presented. In this paper an alternative definition of Stirling numbers of both kind is given. Namely, Stirling numbers of the first kind appear in the closed formula for the n-th derivative of ln x. In the same way Stirling numbers of the second kind appear in the formula for the n-th derivative of f(e^x), where f(x) is an arbitrary smooth real function. This facts allow us to define Stirling numbers within the frame of differential calculus. These definitions may be interesting because arbitrary functions appear in them. Choosing suitable function we may obtain different properties of Stirling numbers by the use of derivatives only. Using simple properties of derivatives we obtain here three important properties of Stirling numbers. First are so called two terms recurrence relations, from which one can easily derive the combinatorial meaning of Stirling numbers. Next we obtain expansion formulas of powers into falling factorials, and vise versa. These expansions usually serve as the definitions of Stirling numbers, as in [1]. Finally, we obtain the exponential generating functions for Stirling and Bell numbers. As a by product the closed formulas for the $n$-th derivative of the functions f(e^x) and f(ln x) are obtained.

In this paper we obtain some explicit expressions for the Euler characteristic of a rank n coherent sheaf F on P^N and of its twists F(t) as polynomials in the Chern classes c_i(F), also giving algorithms for the computation. The employed methods use techniques of umbral calculus involving symmetric functions and Stirling numbers.
