Euler-Mahonian Statistics On Ordered Set Partitions (II)
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study statistics on ordered set partitions whose generating functions are related to $p,q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind. The main purpose of this paper is to provide bijective proofs of all the conjectures of \stein (Arxiv:math.CO/0605670). Our basic idea is to encode ordered partitions by a kind of path diagrams and explore the rich combinatorial properties of the latter structure. We also give a partition version of MacMahon's theorem on the equidistribution of the statistics inversion number and major index on words.
Combinatorics and Boson normal ordering: A gentle introduction
Published in Am. J. Phys. 75, 639-646 (2007) • View PublicationBIB
We discuss a general combinatorial framework for operator ordering problems by applying it to the normal ordering of the powers and exponential of the boson number operator. The solution of the problem is given in terms of Bell and Stirling numbers enumerating partitions of a set. This framework reveals several inherent relations between ordering problems and combinatorial objects, and displays the analytical background to Wick's theorem. The methodology can be straightforwardly generalized from the simple example given herein to a wide class of operators.

On pattern-avoiding partitions
A \emph{set partition} of the set $[n]=\{1,...c,n\}$ is a collection of disjoint blocks $B_1,B_2,...c, B_d$ whose union is $[n]$. We choose the ordering of the blocks so that they satisfy $\min B_1<\min B_2<...b<\min B_d$. We represent such a set partition by a \emph{canonical sequence} $π_1,π_2,...c,π_n$, with $π_i=j$ if $i\in B_j$. We say that a partition $π$ \emph{contains} a partition $σ$ if the canonical sequence of $π$ contains a subsequence that is order-isomorphic to the canonical sequence of $σ$. Two partitions $σ$ and $σ'$ are \emph{equivalent}, if there is a size-preserving bijection between $σ$-avoiding and $σ'$-avoiding partitions. We determine several infinite families of sets of equivalent patterns; for instance, we prove that there is a bijection between $k$-noncrossing and $k$-nonnesting partitions, with a notion of crossing and nesting based on the canonical sequence. We also provide new combinatorial interpretations of the Catalan numbers and the Stirling numbers. Using a systematic computer search, we verify that our results characterize all the pairs of equivalent partitions of size at most seven. We also present a correspondence between set partitions and fillings of Ferrers shapes and stack polyominoes. This correspondence allows us to apply recent results on polyomino fillings in the study of partitions, and conversely, some of our results on partitions imply new results on polyomino fillings and ordered graphs.

Recursions for Excedance number in some permutations groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The excedance number for S_n is known to have an Eulerian distribution. Nevertheless, the classical proof uses descents rather than excedances. We present a direct recursive proof which seems to be folklore and extend it to the colored permutation groups G_r,n. The generalized recursion yields some interesting connection to Stirling numbers of the second kind. We also show some logconcavity result concerning a variant of the excedance number. Finally, we show that the generating function of the excedance number defined on G_r,n is symmetric.

Factorials as sums
In this paper we give an additive representation of the factorial, which can be proven by a simple quick analytical argument. We also present some generalizations, which are linked, on the one hand to an arithmetical theorem proven by Euler (decomposition of primes as the sum of two squares), and, on the other hand, to modern combinatorics (Stirling numbers).

Polynomials with real zeros and Polya frequency sequences
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 109 (2005) 63--74 • View PublicationBIB
Let $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ be two real polynomials whose leading coefficients have the same sign. Suppose that $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ have only real zeros and that $g$ interlaces $f$ or $g$ alternates left of $f$. We show that if $ad\ge bc$ then the polynomial $$(bx+a)f(x)+(dx+c)g(x)$$ has only real zeros. Applications are related to certain results of F.Brenti (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 413 (1989)) and transformations of Pólya frequency sequences. More specifically, suppose that $A(n,k)$ are nonnegative numbers which satisfy the recurrence $$A(n,k)=(rn+sk+t)A(n-1,k-1)+(an+bk+c)A(n-1,k)$$ for $n\ge 1$ and $0\le k\le n$, where $A(n,k)=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$. We show that if $rb\ge as$ and $(r+s+t)b\ge (a+c)s$, then for each $n\ge 0$, $A(n,0),A(n,1),...,A(n,n)$ is a Pólya frequency sequence. This gives a unified proof of the PF property of many well-known sequences including the binomial coefficients, the Stirling numbers of two kinds and the Eulerian numbers.

Fleck quotients and Bernoulli numbers
Let p be a prime, and let n>0 and r be integers. In 1913 Fleck showed that $$F_p(n,r)=(-p)^{-[(n-1)/(p-1)]}\sum_{k=r(mod p)}\binom{n}{k}(-1)^k\in\Z.$$ Nowadays this result plays important roles in many aspects. Recently Sun and Wan investigated $F_p(n,r)$ mod p in [SW2]. In this paper, using p-adic methods we determine $(F_p(m,r)-F_p(n,r))/(m-n)$ modulo p in terms of Bernoulli numbers, where m>0 is an integer with $m\not=n$ and $m=n (mod p(p-1))$. Consequently, $F_p(n,r)$ mod $p^{ord_p(n)+1}$ is determined; for example, if $n=n_*(mod p-1)$ with $0<n_*<p-2$ then $$\frac{F_p(pn,0)}{pn}=\frac{n_*!}{n_*+1}B_{p-1-n_*} (mod p).$$ This yields an application to Stirling numbers of the second kind. We also study extended Fleck quotients; in particular we prove that if $a>0$ and $l\ge 0$ are integers with $2\le n-l\le p$ then $$\frac{1}{p^{n-l}}\sum_{l<k\le n} \binom{p^a n-d}{p^a k-d}(-1)^{pk}\binom{k-1}{l} =\frac{(-1)^{l-1}n!}{l!(n-l)}B_{p-n+l} (mod p)$$ for all d=1,...,max{p^{a-2},1}.
On a conjecture of Wilf
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 114 (2007), 1332-1349 • View PublicationBIB
Let n and k be natural numbers and let S(n,k) denote the Stirling numbers of the second kind. It is a conjecture of Wilf that the alternating sum \sum_{j=0}^{n} (-1)^{j} S(n,j) is nonzero for all n>2. We prove this conjecture for all n not congruent to 2 and not congruent to 2944838 modulo 3145728 and discuss applications of this result to graph theory, multiplicative partition functions, and the irrationality of p-adic series.

On asymptotics, Stirling numbers, Gamma function and polylogs
We apply the Euler--Maclaurin formula to find the asymptotic expansion of the sums $\sum_{k=1}^n (\log k)^p / k^q$, ~$\sum k^q (\log k)^p$, ~$\sum (\log k)^p /(n-k)^q$, ~$\sum 1/k^q (\log k)^p $ in closed form to arbitrary order ($p,q \in\N$). The expressions often simplify considerably and the coefficients are recognizable constants. The constant terms of the asymptotics are either $ζ^{(p)}(\pm q)$ (first two sums), 0 (third sum) or yield novel mathematical constants (fourth sum). This allows numerical computation of $ζ^{(p)}(\pm q)$ faster than any current software. One of the constants also appears in the expansion of the function $\sum_{n\geq 2} (n\log n)^{-s}$ around the singularity at $s=1$; this requires the asymptotics of the incomplete gamma function. The manipulations involve polylogs for which we find a representation in terms of Nielsen integrals, as well as mysterious conjectures for Bernoulli numbers. Applications include the determination of the asymptotic growth of the Taylor coefficients of $(-z/\log(1-z))^k$. We also give the asymptotics of Stirling numbers of first kind and their formula in terms of harmonic numbers.

Statistics on Ordered Partitions of Sets and q-Stirling Numbers
An ordered partition of [n]:={1,2,..., n} is a sequence of its disjoint subsets whose union is [n]. The number of ordered partitions of [n] with k blocks is k!S(n,k), where S(n,k) is the Stirling number of second kind. In this paper we prove some refinements of this formula by showing that the generating function of some statistics on the set of ordered partitions of [n] with k blocks is a natural $q$-analogue of k!S(n,k). In particular, we prove several conjectures of Steingrímsson. To this end, we construct a mapping from ordered partitions to walks in some digraphs and then, thanks to transfer-matrix method, we determine the corresponding generating functions by determinantal computations.

Calculus proofs of some combinatorial inequalities
Published in Mathematical Inequalities & Applications 6 (2003) 197-209 • Search Publication
Using calculus we show how to prove some combinatorial inequalities of the type log-concavity or log-convexity. It is shown by this method that binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds are log-concave, and that Motzkin numbers and secondary structure numbers of rank 1 are log-convex. In fact, we prove via calculus a much stronger result that a natural continuous ``patchwork'' (i.e. corresponding dynamical systems) of Motzkin numbers and secondary structures recursions are increasing functions. We indicate how to prove asymptotically the log-convexity for general secondary structures. Our method also applies to show that sequences of values of some orthogonal polynomials, and in particular the sequence of central Delannoy numbers, are log-convex.

On the log-convexity of combinatorial sequences
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 39 (2007) 453-476 • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the study of the log-convexity of combinatorial sequences. We show that the log-convexity is preserved under componentwise sum, under binomial convolution, and by the linear transformations given by the matrices of binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of two kinds. We develop techniques for dealing with the log-convexity of sequences satisfying a three-term recurrence. We also introduce the concept of $q$-log-convexity and establish the connection with linear transformations preserving the log-convexity. As applications of our results, we prove the log-convexity and $q$-log-convexity of many famous combinatorial sequences of numbers and polynomials.

Bruhat intervals as rooks on skew Ferrers boards
We characterise the permutations pi such that the elements in the closed lower Bruhat interval [id,pi] of the symmetric group correspond to non-taking rook configurations on a skew Ferrers board. It turns out that these are exactly the permutations pi such that [id,pi] corresponds to a flag manifold defined by inclusions, studied by Gasharov and Reiner. Our characterisation connects the Poincare polynomials (rank-generating function) of Bruhat intervals with q-rook polynomials, and we are able to compute the Poincare polynomial of some particularly interesting intervals in the finite Weyl groups A_n and B_n. The expressions involve q-Stirling numbers of the second kind. As a by-product of our method, we present a new Stirling number identity connected to both Bruhat intervals and the poly-Bernoulli numbers defined by Kaneko.

Combinatorial congruences and Stirling numbers
Published in Acta Arith. 126(2007), no. 4, 387-398 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we obtain some sophisticated combinatorial congruences involving binomial coefficients and confirm two conjectures of the author and Davis. They are closely related to our investigation of the periodicity of the sequence $\sum_{j=0}^l{l\choose j}S(j,m)a^{l-j}(l=m,m+1,...)$ modulo a prime $p$, where $a$ and $m>0$ are integers, and those $S(j,m)$ are Stirling numbers of the second kind. We also give a new extension of Glaisher's congruence by showing that $(p-1)p^{[\log_p m]}$ is a period of the sequence $\sum_{j=r(mod p-1)}{l\choose j}S(j,m)(l=m,m+1,...)$ modulo $p$.

Combinatorial approach to generalized Bell and Stirling numbers and boson normal ordering problem
Published in J. Math. Phys. 46, 083511 (2005) • View PublicationBIB
We consider the numbers arising in the problem of normal ordering of expressions in canonical boson creation and annihilation operators. We treat a general form of a boson string which is shown to be associated with generalizations of Stirling and Bell numbers. The recurrence relations and closed-form expressions (Dobiski-type formulas) are obtained for these quantities by both algebraic and combinatorial methods. By extensive use of methods of combinatorial analysis we prove the equivalence of the aforementioned problem to the enumeration of special families of graphs. This link provides a combinatorial interpretation of the numbers arising in this normal ordering problem.

Information on some recent applications of umbral extensions to discrete mathematics
Published in Review Bulletin of Calcutta Mathematical Society Vol. 13 (2005) 1-10 • Search Publication
At the first part of the paper we show how specific umbral extensions of the Stirling numbers of the second kind result in new type of Dobinski-like formulas. In the second part among others one recovers how and why Ward solution of uncountable family of extended difference calculus nonhomogeneous equations extends to Ward-Appell polynomials case . Illustrative specifications to q-calculus case and fibonomial calculus case are made explicit due to the usage of the so called upside down notation for objects of extended finite operator calculus .

On umbral extensions of Stirling numbers and Dobinski-like formulas
Published in Adv. Stud. Contemp. Math., Vol 12, no. 1, (2006) 73-100 • Search Publication
Umbral extensions of the stirling numbers of the second kind are considered and the resulting dobinski-like various formulas including new ones are presented. These extensions naturally encompass the two well known q-extensions. The further consecutive umbral extensions q-stirling numbers are therefore realized here in a two-fold way. The fact that the umbral q-extended dobinski formula may also be interpreted as the average of powers of random variable with the q-poisson distribution singles out the q-extensions which appear to be a kind of singular point in the domain of umbral extensions as expressed by corresponding two observations. Other relevant possibilities are tackled with the paper`s closing down questions and suggestions with respect to other already existing extensions while a brief limited survey of these other type extensions is being delivered. There the newton interpolation formula and divided differences appear helpful and inevitable along with umbra symbolic language in describing properties of general exponential polynomials of touchard and their possible generalizations. Exponential structures or algebraically equivalent prefabs with their exponential formula appear to be also naturally relevant.

A probabilistic approach to $q$-polynomial coefficients, Euler and Stirling numbers
It is known that Bernoulli scheme of independent trials with two outcomes is connected with the binomial coefficients. The aim of this paper is to indicate stochastic processes which are connected with the $q$-polynomial coefficients (in particular, with the $q$-binomial coefficients, or the Gaussian polynomials), Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind, and Euler numbers in a natural way. A probabilistic approach allows us to give very simple proofs of some identities for these coefficients.

Combinatorial proofs of inverse relations and log-concavity for Bessel numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let the Bessel number of the second kind B(n,k) be the number of set partitions of [n] into k blocks of size one or two, and let the Bessel number of the first kind b(n,k) be a certain coefficient in n-th Bessel polynomial. In this paper, we show that Bessel numbers satisfy two properties of Stirling numbers: The two kinds of Bessel numbers are related by inverse formulas, and both Bessel numbers of the first kind and the second kind form log-concave sequences. By constructing sign-reversing involutions, we prove the inverse formulas. We review Krattenthaler's injection for the log-concavity of Bessel numbers of the second kind, and give a new explicit injection for the log-concavity of signless Bessel numbers of the first kind.
