Geometric juggling with q-analogues
Published in Discrete Mathematics 338 (2015), pp. 1067-1074 • View PublicationBIB
We derive a combinatorial equilibrium for bounded juggling patterns with a random, $q$-geometric throw distribution. The dynamics are analyzed via rook placements on staircase Ferrers boards, which leads to a steady-state distribution containing $q$-rook polynomial coefficients and $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind. We show that the equilibrium probabilities of the bounded model can be uniformly approximated with the equilibrium probabilities of a corresponding unbounded model. This observation leads to new limit formulae for $q$-analogues. Keywords: juggling pattern; $q$-Stirling number of the second kind; Ferrers board; Markov process; combinatorial equilibrium

Asymptotic normality of some graph sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simple finite graph G denote by {G \brace k} the number of ways of partitioning the vertex set of G into k non-empty independent sets (that is, into classes that span no edges of G). If E_n is the graph on n vertices with no edges then {E_n \brace k} coincides with {n \brace k}, the ordinary Stirling number of the second kind, and so we refer to {G \brace k} as a graph Stirling number. Harper showed that the sequence of Stirling numbers of the second kind, and thus the graph Stirling sequence of E_n, is asymptotically normal --- essentially, as n grows, the histogram of ({E_n \brace k})_{k \geq 0}, suitably normalized, approaches the density function of the standard normal distribution. In light of Harper's result, it is natural to ask for which sequences (G_n)_{n \geq 0} of graphs is there asymptotic normality of ({G_n \brace k})_{k \geq 0}. Do and Galvin conjectured that if for each n, G_n is acylic and has n vertices, then asymptotic normality occurs, and they gave a proof under the added condition that G_n has no more than o(\sqrt{n/\log n}) components. Here we settle Do and Galvin's conjecture in the affirmative, and significantly extend it, replacing "acyclic" in their conjecture with "co-chromatic with a quasi-threshold graph, and with negligible chromatic number". Our proof combines old work of Navon and recent work of Engbers, Galvin and Hilyard on the normal order problem in a Weyl algebra, and work of Kahn on the matching polynomial of a graph.
Asymptotics of Chebyshev-Stirling and Stirling numbers of the second kind
Published • View PublicationBIB
For the Chebyshev-Stirling numbers, a special case of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers, asymptotic formulae are derived in terms of a local central limit theorem. The underlying probabilistic approach also applies to the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind. Thereby a supplement of the asymptotic analysis for these numbers is established.

Stirling permutations on multisets
A permutation $σ$ of a multiset is called Stirling permutation if $σ(s)\ge σ(i)$ as soon as $σ(i)=σ(j)$ and $i<s<j.$ In our paper we study Stirling polynomials that arise in the generating function for descent statistics on Stirling permutations of any multiset. We develop generalizations of the classical Stirling numbers and present their combinatorial interpretations. Particularly, we apply the theory of $P$-partitions. Using certain specifications we also introduce the Stirling numbers of odd type and generalizations of the central factorial numbers.

Combinatorially interpreting generalized Stirling numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $w$ be a word in alphabet $\{x,D\}$ with $m$ $x$'s and $n$ $D$'s. Interpreting "$x$" as multiplication by $x$, and "$D$" as differentiation with respect to $x$, the identity $wf(x) = x^{m-n}\sum_k S_w(k) x^k D^k f(x)$, valid for any smooth function $f(x)$, defines a sequence $(S_w(k))_k$, the terms of which we refer to as the {\em Stirling numbers (of the second kind)} of $w$. The nomenclature comes from the fact that when $w=(xD)^n$, we have $S_w(k)={n \brace k}$, the ordinary Stirling number of the second kind. Explicit expressions for, and identities satisfied by, the $S_w(k)$ have been obtained by numerous authors, and combinatorial interpretations have been presented. Here we provide a new combinatorial interpretation that retains the spirit of the familiar interpretation of ${n \brace k}$ as a count of partitions. Specifically, we associate to each $w$ a quasi-threshold graph $G_w$, and we show that $S_w(k)$ enumerates partitions of the vertex set of $G_w$ into classes that do not span an edge of $G_w$. We also discuss some relatives of, and consequences of, our interpretation, including $q$-analogs and bijections between families of labelled forests and sets of restricted partitions.

A simple combinatorial interpretation of certain generalized Bell and Stirling numbers
Published in Discrete Mathematics 318 (2014) 53-57 • View PublicationBIB
In a series of papers, P. Blasiak et al. developed a wide-ranging generalization of Bell numbers (and of Stirling numbers of the second kind) that appears to be relevant to the so-called Boson normal ordering problem. They provided a recurrence and, more recently, also offered a (fairly complex) combinatorial interpretation of these numbers. We show that by restricting the numbers somewhat (but still widely generalizing Bell and Stirling numbers), one can supply a much more natural combinatorial interpretation. In fact, we offer two different such interpretations, one in terms of graph colourings and another one in terms of certain labelled Eulerian digraphs.

Normal ordering problem and the extensions of the Stirling grammar
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the connection between context-free grammars and normal ordering problem, and then to explore various extensions of the Stirling grammar. We present grammatical characterizations of several well known combinatorial sequences, including the generalized Stirling numbers of the second kind related to the normal ordering problem and the $r$-Dowling polynomials. Also, possible avenues for future research are described.

p-adic Stirling numbers of the second kind
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let S(n,k) denote the Stirling numbers of the second kind. We prove that the p-adic limit of S(p^e a + c, p^e b + d) as e goes to infinity exists for all integers a, b, c, and d. We call the limiting p-adic integer S(p^\infty a + c, p^\infty b + d). When a equiv b mod (p-1) or d \le 0, we express them in terms of p-adic binomial coefficients introduced in a recent paper.

We introduce numbers depending on three parameters which we call skyscraper numbers. We discuss properties of these numbers and their relationship with Stirling numbers of the first kind, and we also introduce a skyscraper sequence.

Use Impulse Response Sequences in the Construction of Number Sequence Identities
We define impulse response sequence in the set of all linear recurring sequences satisfying a linear recurrence relation of order $r$. The generating function and expression of the impulse response sequence are presented. Some identities of impulse response sequences including a type of nonlinear expressions are established. The interrelationship between the impulse response sequence and other linear recurring sequences in the same set is given, which is used to transfer the identities of impulse response sequences to those of the linear recurring sequences in the same set. Some applications of impulse response sequences to the structure of Stirling numbers of the second order, the Wythoff array, and the Boustrophedon transform are studied.
Dually weighted Stirling-type sequences
Published in European J. Combin. 43 (2015) 55-67 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a generalization of the Stirling numbers via symmetric functions involving two weight functions. The resulting extension unifies previously known Stirling-type sequences with known symmetric function forms, as well as other sequences such as the $p,q$-binomial coefficients. Recurrence relations, generating functions, orthogonality relations, convolution formulas, and determinants of certain matrices involving the obtained sequences are derived. We also give combinatorial interpretations of certain cases in terms of colored partitions and permutations.

Some Determinantal Identities
Some applications of a result, which is proved recently, is considered. We first prove three determinantal identities concerning the binomial coefficient and Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind. We also easily obtain the inverse of the Vandermonde matrix. Then we derive a recurrence formula for sums of powers, which is similar to the well-known Newton identity. In the last section, we consider some sequences given by a homologous linear recurrence equation. A determinantal identity for the Fibonacci numbers of higher order is proved. We finish with an expression of the generalized Vandermonde determinant in terms of the standard Vandermonde determinant and elementary symmetric polynomials.

Explicit formulas for computing Bernoulli numbers of the second kind and Stirling numbers of the first kind
Published in Filomat 28 (2014), no. 2, 319--327 • View PublicationBIB
In the paper, by establishing a new and explicit formula for computing the $n$-th derivative of the reciprocal of the logarithmic function, the author presents new and explicit formulas for calculating Bernoulli numbers of the second kind and Stirling numbers of the first kind. As consequences of these formulas, a recursion for Stirling numbers of the first kind and a new representation of the reciprocal of the factorial $n!$ are derived. Finally, the author finds several identities and integral representations relating to Stirling numbers of the first kind.

Generating functions from the viewpoint of Rota-Baxter algebras
Published in Discrete Math. 338 (2015) 536-554 • View PublicationBIB
We study generating functions in the context of Rota-Baxter algebras. We show that exponential generating functions can be naturally viewed in a very special case of complete free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. This allows us to use free Rota-Baxter algebras to give a broad class of algebraic structures in which generalizations of generating functions can be studied. We generalize the product formula and composition formula for exponential power series. We also give generating functions both for known number families such as Stirling numbers of the second kind and partition numbers, and for new number families such as those from not necessarily disjoint partitions and partitions of multisets.

A quantum combinatorial approach for computing a tetrahedral network of Jones-Wenzl projectors
Trivalent plane graphs are used in various areas of mathematics which relate for instance to the colored Jones polynomial, invariants of 3-manifolds and quantum computation. Their evaluation is based on computations in the Temperley-Lieb algebra and more specifically the Jones-Wenzl projectors. We use the work by Kauffman-Lins to present a quantum combinatorial approach for evaluating a tetrahedral net. On the way we recover two equivalent definitions for the unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind and we provide an equality for the quantized factorial using these numbers.

Multiple Bracket Function, Stirling Number, and Lah Number Identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
The author has constructed multiple analogues of several families of combinatorial numbers in a recent article, including the bracket symbol, and the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind. In the present paper, a multiple analogue of another sequence, the Lah numbers, is developed, and certain associated identities and significant properties of all these sequences are constructed.

The (r1,...,rp)-Bell polynomials
In a previous paper, Mihoubi et al. introduced the $(r_{1},...,r_{p}) $-Stirling numbers and the $(r_{1},...,r_{p}) $-Bell polynomials and gave some of their combinatorial and algebraic properties. These numbers and polynomials generalize, respectively, the $r$-Stirling numbers of the second kind introduced by Broder and the $r$-Bell polynomials introduced by Mező. In this paper, we prove that the $(r_{1},...,r_{p}) $-Stirling numbers of the second kind are log-concave. We also give generating functions and generalized recurrences related to the $(r_{1},...,r_{p}) $-Bell polynomials.

Extended Orbits-Fixedpoints Relations
I extend further, using new proofs, two generalizations of an earlier orbits-fixed-points theorem, which was restricted to group action of the symmetric group. The extended equality makes use of the Stirling numbers of the second kind. An illustration using Mathieu group M24 is discussed. Possible applications using tensor products of matrix permutation representations is indicated.

On identities generated by compositions of positive integers
We prove astonishing identities generated by compositions of positive integers. In passing, we obtain two new identities for Stirling numbers of the first kind. In the two last sections we clarify an algebraic sense of these identities and obtain several other structural close identities.

Identities of Eulerain and ordered Stirling numbers over a multiset
By considering Eulerian numbers and ordered Stirling numbers of the second and third kinds over a multiset, we generalize identities of Eulerian numbers and Stirling numbers of the second and third kinds and provide $q$-analogs of these generalizations. Using these generalizations, we also compute Eulerian numbers and ordered Stirling numbers of the second kind over a multiset.
