Ramsey numbers of sparse graphs versus disjoint books
Let $B_k$ denote a book on $k+2$ vertices and $tB_k$ be $t$ vertex-disjoint $B_k$'s. Let $G$ be a connected graph with $n$ vertices and at most $n(1+ε)$ edges, where $ε$ is a constant depending on $k$ and $t$. In this paper, we show that the Ramsey number $$r(G,tB_k)=2n+t-2$$ provided $n\ge 111t^3k^3$. Our result extends the work of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp (1988), who established the corresponding result for $G$ being a tree and $t=1$.
A bijection between $321$- and $213$-avoiding permutations preserving $t$-stack-sortability
We construct a bijection between $321$- and $213$-avoiding permutations that preserves the property of $t$-stack-sortability. Our bijection transforms natural statistics between these two classes of permutations and proves a refinement of an enumerative conjecture posed by Zhang and Kitaev. This work contributes further to the long-standing line of research on bijections between length-3 pattern avoiding permutations. Increasing binary trees lie at the heart of our approach.
Counting fixed-point-free Cayley permutations
Two-sort species yield differential equations for functional digraphs of Cayley permutations. From these we obtain an explicit formula for fixed-point-free Cayley permutations and conjecture that their proportion tends to $1/e$, as for permutations and endofunctions. Our approach also yields counting formulas when the functional digraph is a tree, forest, or connected.
Degree conditions for spanning expansion hypertrees
The $k$-expansion of a graph $G$ is the $k$-uniform hypergraph obtained from $G$ by adding $k-2$ new vertices to every edge. We determine, for all $k > d \geq 1$, asymptotically optimal $d$-degree conditions that ensure the existence of all spanning $k$-expansions of bounded-degree trees, in terms of the corresponding conditions for loose Hamilton cycles. This refutes a conjecture by Pehova and Petrova, who conjectured that a lower threshold should have sufficed. The reason why the answer is off from the conjectured value is an unexpected `parity obstruction': all spanning $k$-expansions of trees with only odd degree vertices require larger degree conditions to embed. We also show that if the tree has at least one even-degree vertex, the codegree conditions for embedding its $k$-expansion become substantially smaller.
Bounds on the game isolation number and exact values for paths and cycles
The isolation game is played on a graph $G$ by two players who take turns playing a vertex such that if $X$ is the set of already played vertices, then a vertex can be selected only if it dominates a vertex from a nontrivial component of $G \setminus N_G[X]$, where $N_G[X]$ is the set of vertices in $X$ or adjacent to a vertex in $X$. Dominator wishes to finish the game with the minimum number of played vertices, while Staller has the opposite goal. The game isolation number $ι_{\rm g}(G)$ is the number of moves in the Dominator-start game where both players play optimally. If Staller starts the game the invariant is denoted by $ι_{\rm g}'(G)$. In this paper, $ι_{\rm g}(C_n)$, $ι_{\rm g}(P_n)$, $ι_{\rm g}'(C_n)$, and $ι_{\rm g}'(P_n)$ are determined for all $n$. It is proved that there are only two graphs that attain equality in the upper bound $ι_{\rm g}(G) \le \frac{1}{2}|V(G)|$, and that there are precisely eleven graphs which attain equality in the upper bound $ι_{\rm g}'(G) \le \frac{1}{2}|V(G)|$. For trees $T$ of order at least three it is proved that $ι_{\rm g}(T) \le \frac{5}{11}|V(T)|$. A new infinite family of graphs $G$ is also constructed for which $ι_{\rm g}(G) = ι_{\rm g}'(G) = \frac{3}{7}|V(G)|$ holds.
Cocompact unfolding trees
This paper will show when a rooted path tree of a finite directed rooted graph has only finitely many orbits under the action of its undirected automorphism group (i.e. when it is cocompact). This will allow us to specify which trees are almost isomorphic to cocompact trees. We will provide an algorithm that will determine this, thus mostly answering question (1) from arXiv:2212.07205.
Evasive sets, twisted varieties, and container-clique trees
In the affine space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ over the finite field of order $q$, a point set $S$ is said to be $(d,k,r)$-evasive if the intersection between $S$ and any variety, of dimension $k$ and degree at most $d$, has cardinality less than $r$. As $q$ tends to infinity, the size of a $(d,k,r)$-evasive set in $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is at most $O\left(q^{n-k}\right)$ by a simple averaging argument. We exhibit the existence of such evasive sets of sizes at least $Ω\left(q^{n-k}\right)$ for much smaller values of $r$ than previously known constructions, and establish an enumerative upper bound $2^{O(q^{n-k})}$ for the total number of such evasive sets. The existence result is based on our study of twisted varieties. In the projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ over an algebraically closed field, a variety $V$ is said to be $d$-twisted if the intersection between $V$ and any variety, of dimension $n - \dim(V)$ and degree at most $d$, has dimension zero. We prove an upper bound on the smallest possible degree of twisted varieties which is best possible in a mild sense. The enumeration result includes a new technique for the container method which we believe is of independent interest. To illustrate the potential of this technique, we give a simpler proof of a result by Chen--Liu--Nie--Zeng that characterizes the maximum size of a collinear-triple-free subset in a random sampling of $ \mathbb{F}_q^2$ up to polylogarithmic factors.
Observables of random spanning trees in random environment
In this thesis, we study a new disordered system called random spanning tree in random environment (RSTRE) across different families of graphs with varying disorder distributions. We examine several observables as functions of the disorder strength (inverse temperature) $β\geq 0$, and compare their values to the extreme cases $β= 0$ and $β\rightarrow \infty$, which correspond to the uniform spanning tree (UST) and the minimum spanning tree (MST), respectively. The results concerning the diameter are in line with those of arXiv:2311.01808 and arXiv:2410.16830, while the findings on local observables are based on arXiv:2410.16836. This thesis also includes new material on the RSTRE in the Euclidean infinite lattice, as well as a novel result on the diameter of the unweighted UST on a slightly supercritical random graph.
Spectra of high-dimensional sparse random geometric graphs
We analyze the spectral properties of the high-dimensional random geometric graph $G(n, d, p)$, formed by sampling $n$ i.i.d vectors $\{v_i\}_{i=1}^{n}$ uniformly on a $d$-dimensional unit sphere and connecting each pair $\{i,j\}$ whenever $\langle v_i, v_j \rangle \geq τ$ so that $p=\mathbb P(\langle v_i,v_j\rangle \geq τ)$. This model defines a nonlinear random matrix ensemble with dependent entries. We show that if $d =ω( np\log^{2}(1/p))$ and $np\to\infty$, the limiting spectral distribution of the normalized adjacency matrix $\frac{A}{\sqrt{np(1-p)}}$ is the semicircle law. To our knowledge, this is the first such result for $G(n, d, p)$ in the sparse regime. In the constant sparsity case $p=α/n$, we further show that if $d=ω(\log^2(n))$ the limiting spectral distribution of $A$ in $G(n,α/n)$ coincides with that of the Erdős-Rényi graph $G(n,α/n)$.
Our approach combines the classical moment method in random matrix theory with a novel recursive decomposition of closed-walk graphs, leveraging block-cut trees and ear decompositions, to control the moments of the empirical spectral distribution. A refined high trace analysis further yields a near-optimal bound on the second eigenvalue when $np=Ω(\log^4 (n))$, removing technical conditions previously imposed in (Liu et al. 2023). As an application, we demonstrate that this improved eigenvalue bound sharpens the parameter requirements on $d$ and $p$ for spontaneous synchronization on random geometric graphs in (Abdalla et al. 2024) under the homogeneous Kuramoto model.
On Sierpiński packing chromatic number and recognition of Sierpiński products
The Sierpiński product $G \otimes _f H$ of graphs $G$ and $H$ with respect to a function $f \colon V(G)\rightarrow V(H)$ has the vertex set $V(G)\times V(H)$. For every $g\in V(G)$ it contains a disjoint copy $gH$ of $H$, and for every edge $gg'$ of $G$ there is the edge $(g,f(g'))(g',f(g))$ between $gH$ and $g'H$. In this paper, the Sierpiński packing chromatic number is defined as the minimum of $χ_ρ(G\otimes _f H)$ over all functions $f$, where $χ_ρ(X)$ is the packing chromatic number of $X$. The upper Sierpiński packing chromatic number is analogously defined as the maximum corresponding value. The (upper) Sierpiński packing chromatic number is determined for all Sierpiński product graphs whose both factors are complete. Sierpiński product graphs whose factors are paths or stars are also studied. Their Sierpiński packing chromatic number is always $3$, while their upper Sierpiński packing chromatic number is bounded from below and above. It is also proved that for a given graph $G$, it can be checked in polynomial time whether $G$ has a representation as a Sierpiński product graphs both factors of which being trees.
Spanning k-trees, odd [1,b]-factors and spectral radius in binding graphs
The binding number of a graph $G$, written as $\mbox{bind}(G)$, is defined by $$ \mbox{bind}(G)=\min\left\{\frac{|N_G(X)|}{|X|}:\emptyset\neq X\subseteq V(G),N_G(X)\neq V(G)\right\}. $$ A graph $G$ is called $r$-binding if $\mbox{bind}(G)\geq r$. An odd $[1,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph $F$ with $d_F(v)\in\{1,3,\ldots,b\}$ for all $v\in V(G)$, where $b\geq1$ is an odd integer. A spanning $k$-tree of a connected graph $G$ is a spanning tree $T$ with $d_T(v)\leq k$ for every $v\in V(G)$. In this paper, we first show a tight sufficient condition with respect to the adjacency spectral radius for connected $\frac{1}{b}$-binding graphs to have odd $[1,b]$-factors, which generalizes Fan and Lin's previous result [D. Fan, H. Lin, Binding number, $k$-factor and spectral radius of graphs, Electron. J. Combin. 31(1) (2024) \#P1.30] and partly improves Fan, Liu and Ao's previous result [A. Fan, R. Liu, G. Ao, Spectral radius, odd $[1,b]$-factor and spanning $k$-tree of 1-binding graphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 705 (2025) 1--16]. Then we put forward a tight sufficient condition via the adjacency spectral radius for connected $\frac{1}{k-2}$-binding graphs to have spanning $k$-trees, which partly improves Fan, Liu and Ao's previous result [A. Fan, R. Liu, G. Ao, Spectral radius, odd $[1,b]$-factor and spanning $k$-tree of 1-binding graphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 705 (2025) 1--16].
When does a tree activate the random graph?
Let $F$ and $G$ be two graphs. A spanning subgraph $H$ of $G$ is called weakly $F$-saturated if one can add to $H$ the edges of $G \setminus H$ in some order, so that whenever a new edge is added, a new copy of $F$ is formed. Obtaining lower bounds for the minimum size $\mathrm{wsat}(G,F)$ of such an $H$ is a classical problem in extremal combinatorics. In particular, in the past 40 years, various algebraic tools have been developed to prove lower bounds on the weak saturation number $\mathrm{wsat}(G,F)$. Our paper uncovers a new connection of weak saturation to topology of clique complexes, that allows to prove tight lower bounds in some cases when the algebraic tools are not efficient.
It is easy to see that the smallest $K_3$-saturating graphs in $K_n$ are trees, thus $\mathrm{wsat}(K_n,K_3)=n-1$. In 2017, Korándi and Sudakov proved that this is also the case in dense random graphs $G\sim G_{n,p}$, $p=\mathrm{const}\in(0,1)$, and posed the question of determining the smallest $p$ for which $G_{n,p}$ contains a $K_3$-saturating tree with high probability. Using the new topological connection, we show that this critical $p$ is of order $n^{-1/3-o(1)}$.
Inspired by Gromov's local-to-global principle for hyperbolic groups, we further develop our topological approach and determine the critical probability up to a constant factor, for trees with diameter at most $n^{c}$, for some $c>0$.
The new connection also enables us to improve the best known upper bound on the threshold probability for simple connectivity of the 2-dimensional clique complex of $G_{n,p}$, due to Kahle.
Bounded diameter monochromatic component covers
Ryser conjectured that every $r$-edge-coloured complete graph can be covered by $r-1$ monochromatic trees. Motivated by a question of Austin in analysis, Milićević predicted something stronger -- that every $r$-edge-coloured complete graph can be covered by $r-1$ monochromatic trees \emph{of bounded diameter}. Here we show that the two conjectures are equivalent. As immediate corollaries we obtain new results about Milićević's Conjecture, most notably that it is true for $r=5$. We also obtain several new cases of a generalization of Milićević's Conjecture to non-complete graphs due to DeBiasio-Kamel-McCourt-Sheats.
On the multiplicity of 1 as a Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph
Let $G$ be a graph with $p(G)$ pendant vertices and $q(G)$ quasi-pendant vertices. Denote by $m_{L(G)}(λ)$ the multiplicity of $λ$ as a Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$. Let $\overline{G}$ be the reduced graph of $G$, which can be obtained from $G$ by deleting some pendant vertices such that $p(\overline{G})=q(\overline{G})$. We first prove that $m_{L(G)}(1)=p(G)-q(G)+m_{L(\overline{G})}(1)$. Since deleting pendant path $P_3$ does not change the multiplicity of Laplacian eigenvalue 1 of a graph, we further focus on reduced graphs without pendant path $P_3$. Let $T$ be a reduced tree on $n(\geq 6)$ vertices without pendant path $P_3$, then it is proved that $$m_{L(T)}(1)\leq \frac{n-6}{4},$$ and all the trees attaining the upper bound are characterized completely. As an application, for a reduced unicyclic graph $G$ of order $n\geq 10$ without pendant path $P_3$, we get $$m_{L(G)}(1)\leq \frac{n}{4},$$ and all the unicyclic graphs attaining the upper bound are determined completely.
Majority dynamics on finite trees
For an arbitrary finite tree $T$, we find the exact value of the wort-case stabilisation time of majority dynamics on $T$. We also prove that for a perfect rooted cubic tree $T$ with diameter $D$ and uniformly random initial opinions, the dynamics stabilises in time $τ\in(D/4,D/3)$ with high probability.
Heights of butterfly trees
Binary search trees (BSTs) are fundamental data structures whose performance is largely governed by tree height. We introduce a block model for constructing BSTs by embedding internal BSTs into the nodes of an external BST -- a structure motivated by parallel data architectures -- corresponding to composite permutations formed via Kronecker or wreath products. Extending Devroye's result that the height $h_n$ of a random BST satisfies $h_n / \log n \to c^* \approx 4.311$, we show that block BSTs with $nm$ nodes and fixed external size $m$ satisfy $h_{n,m} / \log n \to c^* + h_m$ in distribution. We then study butterfly trees: BSTs generated from permutations built using iterated Kronecker or wreath products. For simple butterfly trees (from iterated Kronecker products of $S_2$), we give a full distributional description showing polynomial height growth: $\mathbb{E} h_n^{\operatorname{B}} = Θ(N^α)$ with $α= \log_2(3/2) \approx 0.58496$. For nonsimple butterfly trees (from wreath products), we prove power-law bounds: $cN^α\cdot (1 + o(1)) \le \mathbb{E} h_n^{\operatorname{B}} \le dN^β\cdot (1 + o(1))$, with $β\approx 0.913189$.
Automated Counting of Spanning Trees for Several Infinite Families of Graphs
Using the theoretical basis developed by Yao and Zeilberger, we consider certain graph families whose structure results in a rational generating function for sequences related to spanning tree enumeration. Said families are Powers of Cycles and Powers of Path; later, we briefly discuss Torus graphs and Grid graphs. In each case we know, a priori, that the set of spanning trees of the family of graphs can be described in terms of a finite-state-machine, and hence there is a finite transfer-matrix that guarantees the generating function is rational. Finding this ``grammar'', and hence the transfer-matrix is very tedious, so a much more efficient approach is to use experimental mathematics. Since computing numerical determinants is so fast, one can use the matrix tree theorem to generate sufficiently many terms, then fit the data to a rational function. The whole procedure can be done rigorously a posteriori.
Minimum degree and sparse connected spanning subgraphs
Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices and at most $n(1+ε)$ edges with bounded maximum degree, and $F$ a graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $n-k$, where $ε$ is a constant depending on $k$. In this paper, we prove that $F$ contains $G$ as a spanning subgraph provided $n\ge 6k^3$, by establishing tight bounds for the Ramsey number $r(G,K_{1,k})$, where $K_{1,k}$ is a star on $k+1$ vertices. Our result generalizes and refines the work of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp (JCT-B, 1982), who established the corresponding result for $G$ being a tree. Moreover, the tight bound for $r(G,tK_{1,k})$ is also obtained.
On a magneto-spectral invariant on finite graphs
In this paper, we introduce a magneto-spectral invariant for finite graphs. This invariant vanishes on trees and is maximized by complete graphs. We compute this invariant for cycles, complete graphs, wheel graphs, hypercubes, complete bipartite graphs and suspensions of trees and derive various lower and upper bounds. In particular, we provide a sharp upper bound for regular bipartite graphs and derive a direct relation between the class of graphs assuming this upper bound and the class of unit weighing matrices, which are generalizations of complex Hadamard matrices. Moreover, this class of bipartite graphs has non-negative magnetic Bakry-Émery curvature and is preserved under both the Cartesian product and a partial tensor product for bipartite graphs. The study of our invariant for certain pairs of cospectral graphs indicates also that this invariant allows us to distinguish between them. Finally, we discuss the behaviour of this invariant under various graph operations and investigate relations to the spectral gap.
Fundamental and homogeneous bases of Hopf algebras built from nonsymmetric operads
We introduce new partial order structures on the underlying sets of free nonsymmetric operads. These posets involve decorated ordered rooted trees, and their terminal intervals are lattices. These lattices are not graded, not self-dual, and not semi-distributive, but they are EL-shellable, and their Mbius functions take values in $\{-1, 0, 1\}$. They admit sublattices on the families of $m$-Fuss-Catalan objects and of forests of trees. This latter order structure is used to construct two new bases for the natural Hopf algebras of free nonsymmetric operads: a fundamental basis and a homogeneous basis. Along with the already known elementary basis of these Hopf algebras, this yields a triple of bases. The situation is similar to what is observed in the Hopf algebras of Malvenuto-Reutenauer, Loday-Ronco, and noncommutative symmetric functions, each of which presents such triples of bases and basis changes involving, respectively, the right weak partial order, the Tamari partial order, and the Boolean lattice partial order.
