Fine structure of 4-critical triangle-free graphs III. General surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Dvořák, Král' and Thomas gave a description of the structure of triangle-free graphs on surfaces with respect to 3-coloring. Their description however contains two substructures (both related to graphs embedded in plane with two precolored cycles) whose coloring properties are not entirely determined. In this paper, we fill these gaps.

An exact Turán result for tripartite 3-graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Mantel's theorem says that among all triangle-free graphs of a given order the balanced complete bipartite graph is the unique graph of maximum size. We prove an analogue of this result for 3-graphs. Let $K_4^-=\{123,124,134\}$, $F_6=\{123,124,345,156\}$ and $\mathcal{F}=\{K_4^-,F_6\}$: for $n\neq 5$ the unique $\mathcal{F}$-free 3-graph of order $n$ and maximum size is the balanced complete tripartite 3-graph $S_3(n)$ (for $n=5$ it is $C_5^{(3)}=\{123,234,345,145,125\}$). This extends an old result of Bollobás that $S_3(n) $ is the unique 3-graph of maximum size with no copy of $K_4^-=\{123,124,134\}$ or $F_5=\{123,124,345\}$.

On realization graphs of degree sequences
Published in Discrete Mathematics, vol. 339 (2016), no. 8, pp. 2146-2152 • View PublicationBIB
Given the degree sequence $d$ of a graph, the realization graph of $d$ is the graph having as its vertices the labeled realizations of $d$, with two vertices adjacent if one realization may be obtained from the other via an edge-switching operation. We describe a connection between Cartesian products in realization graphs and the canonical decomposition of degree sequences described by R.I. Tyshkevich and others. As applications, we characterize the degree sequences whose realization graphs are triangle-free graphs or hypercubes.

Dynamic choosability of triangle-free graphs and sparse random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The \textit{$r$-dynamic choosability} of a graph $G$, written ${\rm ch}_r(G)$, is the least $k$ such that whenever each vertex is assigned a list of at least $k$ colors a proper coloring can be chosen from the lists so that every vertex $v$ has at least $\min\{d_G(v),r\}$ neighbors of distinct colors. Let ${\rm ch}(G)$ denote the choice number of $G$. In this paper, we prove ${\rm ch}_r(G)\leq (1+o(1)){\rm ch}(G)$ when $\frac{Δ(G)}{δ(G)}$ is bounded. We also show that there exists a constant $C$ such that for the random graph $G=G(n,p)$ with $\frac{2}{n}<p\leq \frac{1}{2}$, it holds that ${\rm ch}_2(G)\leq {\rm ch}(G) + C$, asymptotically almost surely. Also if $G$ is triangle-free regualr graph, then ${\rm ch}_2(G)\leq {\rm ch}(G)+86$ holds.

Three-coloring graphs with no induced seven-vertex path II : using a triangle
In this paper, we give a polynomial time algorithm which determines if a given graph containing a triangle and no induced seven-vertex path is 3-colorable, and gives an explicit coloring if one exists. In previous work, we gave a polynomial time algorithm for three-coloring triangle-free graphs with no induced seven-vertex path. Combined, our work shows that three-coloring a graph with no induced seven-vertex path can be done in polynomial time.

On the existence of vertex-disjoint subgraphs with high degree sum
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$, we denote by $σ_{2}(G)$ the minimum degree sum of two non-adjacent vertices if $G$ is non-complete; otherwise, $σ_{2}(G) = +\infty$. In this paper, we prove the following two results: (i) If $s_{1}, s_{2} \ge 2$ are integers and $G$ is a non-complete graph with $σ_{2}(G) \ge 2(s_{1} + s_{2} + 1) - 1$, then $G$ contains two vertex-disjoint subgraphs $H_{1}$ and $H_{2}$ such that each $H_{i}$ is a graph of order at least $s_{i}+1$ with $σ_{2}(H_{i}) \ge 2s_{i} - 1$. (ii) If $s_{1}, s_{2} \ge 2$ are integers and $G$ is a triangle-free graph of order at least $3$ with $σ_{2}(G) \ge 2(s_{1} + s_{2}) - 1$, then $G$ contains two vertex-disjoint subgraphs $H_{1}$ and $H_{2}$ such that each $H_{i}$ is a graph of order at least $2s_{i}$ with $σ_{2}(H_{i}) \ge 2s_{i} - 1$. By using this result, we also give some corollaries concerning degree conditions for the existence of $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles.
Largest minimal inversion-complete and pair-complete sets of permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We solve two related extremal problems in the theory of permutations. A set $Q$ of permutations of the integers 1 to $n$ is inversion-complete (resp., pair-complete) if for every inversion $(j,i)$, where $1 \le i \textless{} j \le n$, (resp., for every pair $(i,j)$, where $i\not= j$) there exists a permutation in~$Q$ where $j$ is before~$i$. It is minimally inversion-complete if in addition no proper subset of~$Q$ is inversion-complete; and similarly for pair-completeness. The problems we consider are to determine the maximum cardinality of a minimal inversion-complete set of permutations, and that of a minimal pair-complete set of permutations. The latter problem arises in the determination of the Carathéodory numbers for certain abstract convexity structures on the $(n-1)$-dimensional real and integer vector spaces. Using Mantel's Theorem on the maximum number of edges in a triangle-free graph, we determine these two maximum cardinalities and we present a complete description of the optimal sets of permutations for each problem. Perhaps surprisingly (since there are twice as many pairs to cover as inversions), these two maximum cardinalities coincide whenever $n \ge 4$.

On triangle-free graphs of order 10 with prescribed 1-defective chromatic number
A graph is (m, k)-colourable if its vertices can be coloured with m colours such that the maximum degree of any subgraph induced on ver- tices receiving the same colour is at most k. The k-defective chromatic number for a graph is the least positive integer m for which the graph is (m, k)-colourable. All triangle-free graphs on 8 or fewer vertices are (2, 1)-colourable. There are exactly four triangle-free graphs of order 9 which have 1-defective chromatic number 3. We show that these four graphs appear as subgraphs in almost all triangle-free graphs of order 10 with 1-defective chromatic number equal to 3. In fact there is a unique triangle-free (3, 1)-critical graph on 10 vertices and we exhibit this graph.
The typical structure of maximal triangle-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, settling a question of Erdős, Balogh and Petříčková showed that there are at most $2^{n^2/8+o(n^2)}$ $n$-vertex maximal triangle-free graphs, matching the previously known lower bound. Here we characterize the typical structure of maximal triangle-free graphs. We show that almost every maximal triangle-free graph $G$ admits a vertex partition $X\cup Y$ such that $G[X]$ is a perfect matching and $Y$ is an independent set. Our proof uses the Ruzsa-Szemerédi removal lemma, the Erdős-Simonovits stability theorem, and recent results of Balogh-Morris-Samotij and Saxton-Thomason on characterization of the structure of independent sets in hypergraphs. The proof also relies on a new bound on the number of maximal independent sets in triangle-free graphs with many vertex-disjoint $P_3$'s, which is of independent interest.

On the Randic and degree distance indices of the Mycielskian of a graph
In a search for triangle-free graphs with arbitrarily large chromatic numbers, Mycielski developed a graph transformation that transforms a graph into a new graph which is called the Mycielskian of that graph. In this paper we provide some sharp bounds for the Randic index of the Mycielskian graphs. Also, we determine the degree distance index of the Mycielskian of each graph with diameter two.

Induced subgraphs of graphs with large chromatic number. II. Three steps towards Gyarfas' conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gyarfas conjectured in 1985 that for all $k$, $l$, every graph with no clique of size more than $k$ and no odd hole of length more than $l$ has chromatic number bounded by a function of $k$ and $l$. We prove three weaker statements: (1) Every triangle-free graph with sufficiently large chromatic number has an odd hole of length different from five; (2) For all $l$, every triangle-free graph with sufficiently large chromatic number contains either a 5-hole or an odd hole of length more than $l$; (3) For all $k$, $l$, every graph with no clique of size more than $k$ and sufficiently large chromatic number contains either a 5-hole or a hole of length more than $l$.

Interval cyclic edge-colorings of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A proper edge-coloring of a graph $G$ with colors $1,\ldots,t$ is called an \emph{interval cyclic $t$-coloring} if all colors are used, and the edges incident to each vertex $v\in V(G)$ are colored by $d_{G}(v)$ consecutive colors modulo $t$, where $d_{G}(v)$ is the degree of a vertex $v$ in $G$. A graph $G$ is \emph{interval cyclically colorable} if it has an interval cyclic $t$-coloring for some positive integer $t$. The set of all interval cyclically colorable graphs is denoted by $\mathfrak{N}_{c}$. For a graph $G\in \mathfrak{N}_{c}$, the least and the greatest values of $t$ for which it has an interval cyclic $t$-coloring are denoted by $w_{c}(G)$ and $W_{c}(G)$, respectively. In this paper we investigate some properties of interval cyclic colorings. In particular, we prove that if $G$ is a triangle-free graph with at least two vertices and $G\in \mathfrak{N}_{c}$, then $W_{c}(G)\leq \vert V(G)\vert +Δ(G)-2$. We also obtain bounds on $w_{c}(G)$ and $W_{c}(G)$ for various classes of graphs. Finally, we give some methods for constructing of interval cyclically non-colorable graphs.

Guessing Games on Triangle-free Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The guessing game introduced by Riis is a variant of the "guessing your own hats" game and can be played on any simple directed graph G on n vertices. For each digraph G, it is proved that there exists a unique guessing number gn(G) associated to the guessing game played on G. When we consider the directed edge to be bidirected, in other words, the graph G is undirected, Christofides and Markstrom introduced a method to bound the value of the guessing number from below using the fractional clique number Kf(G). In particular they showed gn(G) >= |V(G)| - Kf(G). Moreover, it is pointed out that equality holds in this bound if the underlying undirected graph G falls into one of the following categories: perfect graphs, cycle graphs or their complement. In this paper, we show that there are triangle-free graphs that have guessing numbers which do not meet the fractional clique cover bound. In particular, the famous triangle-free Higman-Sims graph has guessing number at least 77 and at most 78, while the bound given by fractional clique cover is 50.

The number of the maximal triangle-free graphs
Published in Bull. London Math. Soc. (2014) 46 (5): 1003-1006 • View PublicationBIB
Paul Erdős suggested the following problem: Determine or estimate the number of maximal triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices. Here we show that the number of maximal triangle-free graphs is at most $2^{n^2/8+o(n^2)}$, which matches the previously known lower bound. Our proof uses among others the Ruzsa-Szemerédi triangle removal lemma, and recent results on characterizing of the structure of independent sets in hypergraphs.

An upper bound on the extremal version of Hajnal's triangle-free game
A game starts with the empty graph on $n$ vertices, and two player alternate adding edges to the graph. Only moves which do not create a triangle are valid. The game ends when a maximal triangle-free graph is reached. The goal of one player is to end the game as soon as possible, while the other player is trying to prolong the game. With optimal play, the length of the game (number of edges played) is called the $K_3$ game saturation number. In this paper we prove an upper bound for this number.

Locally triangular graphs and rectagraphs with symmetry
Published in J. Combin. Theory, Ser. A. 133 (2015) 1-28 • View PublicationBIB
Locally triangular graphs are known to be halved graphs of bipartite rectagraphs, which are connected triangle-free graphs in which every $2$-arc lies in a unique quadrangle. A graph $Γ$ is locally rank 3 if there exists $G\leq \mathrm{Aut}(Γ)$ such that for each vertex $u$, the permutation group induced by the vertex stabiliser $G_u$ on the neighbourhood $Γ(u)$ is transitive of rank 3. One natural place to seek locally rank 3 graphs is among the locally triangular graphs, where every induced neighbourhood graph is isomorphic to a triangular graph $T_n$. This is because the graph $T_n$, which has vertex set the $2$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and edge set the pairs of $2$-subsets intersecting at one point, admits a rank 3 group of automorphisms. In this paper, we classify the locally $4$-homogeneous rectagraphs under some additional structural assumptions. We then use this result to classify the connected locally triangular graphs that are also locally rank 3.

Graph energy estimates via the Chebyshev functional
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. The energy $E$ of the graph $G$ is defined as the sum of the moduli of the adjacency eigenvalues $λ_{1} \geq λ_{2} \geq \ldots \geq λ_{n}$ of $G$: $$ E=\sum_{i=1}^{n}{|λ{i}|}. $$ We obtain new lower bounds on the energy of a graph, which in various cases improve upon known results. For example, a particularly simple and appealing corollary of our results is: $$ E \geq \frac{2m}{λ_{1}}. $$ This implies a result obtained by Gutman \emph{et al.} for regular graphs and is better for triangle-free graphs than a result of Caporossi \emph{et al.}.
