On a triangulated category which behaves like a cluster category of infinite Dynkin type, and the relation to triangulations of the infinity-gon
This paper investigates a certain 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated category D whose Auslander-Reiten quiver is ZA_{\infty}. We show that the cluster tilting subcategories of D form a so-called cluster structure, and we classify these subcategories in terms of what one may call `triangulations of the infinity-gon'. This is reminiscent of the cluster category C of type A_n which is a 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated category whose Auslander-Reiten quiver is a quotient of ZA_n. The cluster tilting subcategories of C form a cluster structure and they are classified in terms of triangulations of the (n+3)-gon. The category D behaves like a `cluster category of type A_{\infty}'.

On the Three Colorability of Planar Graphs
The chromatic number of an planar graph is not greater than four and this is known by the famous four color theorem and is equal to two when the planar graph is bipartite. When the planar graph is even-triangulated or all cycles are greater than three we know by the Heawood and the Grotszch theorems that the chromatic number is three. There are many conjectures and partial results on three colorability of planar graphs when the graph has specific cycles lengths or cycles with three edges (triangles) have special distance distributions. In this paper we have given a new three colorability criteria for planar graphs that can be considered as an generalization of the Heawood and the Grotszch theorems with respect to the triangulation and cycles of length greater than 3. We have shown that an triangulated planar graph with disjoint holes is 3-colorable if and only if every hole satisfies the parity symmetric property, where a hole is a cycle (face boundary) of length greater than 3.

Cluster algebras, quiver representations and triangulated categories
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is an introduction to some aspects of Fomin-Zelevinsky's cluster algebras and their links with the representation theory of quivers and with Calabi-Yau triangulated categories. It is based on lectures given by the author at summer schools held in 2006 (Bavaria) and 2008 (Jerusalem). In addition to by now classical material, we present the outline of a proof of the periodicity conjecture for pairs of Dynkin diagrams (details will appear elsewhere) and recent results on the interpretation of mutations as derived equivalences.

On Walkup's class ${\cal K}(d)$ and a minimal triangulation of $(S^3 \times \rotatebox{90}{\ltimes} S^1)^{\#3}$

For $d \geq 2$, Walkup's class ${\cal K}(d)$ consists of the $d$-dimensional simplicial complexes all whose vertex-links are stacked $(d-1)$-spheres. Kalai showed that for $d \geq 4$, all connected members of ${\cal K}(d)$ are obtained from stacked $d$-spheres by finitely many elementary handle additions. According to a result of Walkup, the face vector of any triangulated 4-manifold $X$ with Euler characteristic $χ$ satisfies $f_1 \geq 5f_0 - {15/2} χ$, with equality only for $X \in {\cal K}(4)$. Kühnel observed that this implies $f_0(f_0 - 11) \geq -15χ$, with equality only for 2-neighborly members of ${\cal K}(4)$. Kühnel also asked if there is a triangulated 4-manifold with $f_0 = 15$, $χ= -4$ (attaining equality in his lower bound). In this paper, guided by Kalai's theorem, we show that indeed there is such a triangulation. It triangulates the connected sum of three copies of the twisted sphere product $S^3 \times {-2.8mm}_{-} S^1$. Because of Kühnel's inequality, the given triangulation of this manifold is a vertex-minimal triangulation. By a recent result of Effenberger, the triangulation constructed here is tight. Apart from the neighborly 2-manifolds and the infinite family of $(2d+ 3)$-vertex sphere products $S^{d-1} \times S^1$ (twisted for $d$ odd), only fourteen tight triangulated manifolds were known so far. The present construction yields a new member of this sporadic family. We also present a self-contained proof of Kalai's result.

A class of hypergraphs that generalizes chordal graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce a class of hypergraphs that we call chordal. We also extend the definition of triangulated hypergraphs, given in \cite{VT}, so that a triangulated hypergraph, according to our definition, is a natural generalization of a chordal (rigid circuit) graph. In \cite{F1}, Fröberg shows that the chordal graphs corresponds to graph algebras, $R/I(\mc{G})$, with linear resolutions. We extend Fröberg's method and show that the hypergraph algebras of generalized chordal hypergraphs, a class of hypergraphs that includes the chordal hypergraphs, have linear resolutions. The definitions we give, yield a natural higher dimensional version of the well known flag property of simplicial complexes. We obtain what we call $d$-flag complexes.

Lower bound theorem for normal pseudomanifolds
Published in Expo. Math. 26 (2008), 327 - 351 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a self-contained combinatorial proof of the lower bound theorem for normal pseudomanifolds, including a treatment of the cases of equality in this theorem. We also discuss McMullen and Walkup's generalised lower bound conjecture for triangulated spheres in the context of the lower bound theorem. Finally, we pose a new lower bound conjecture for non-simply connected triangulated manifolds.
Drawing polytopal graphs with polymake

This note wants to explain how to obtain meaningful pictures of (possibly high-dimensional) convex polytopes, triangulated manifolds, and other objects from the realm of geometric combinatorics such as tight spans of finite metric spaces and tropical polytopes. In all our cases we arrive at specific, geometrically motivated, graph drawing problems. The methods displayed are implemented in the software system polymake.

Face enumeration - from spheres to manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a number of new restrictions on the enumerative properties of homology manifolds and semi-Eulerian complexes and posets. These include a determination of the affine span of the fine $h$-vector of balanced semi-Eulerian complexes and the toric $h$-vector of semi-Eulerian posets. The lower bounds on simplicial homology manifolds, when combined with higher dimensional analogues of Walkup's 3-dimensional constructions \cite{Wal}, allow us to give a complete characterization of the $f$-vectors of arbitrary simplicial triangulations of $S^1 \times S^3, \C P^2,$ $ K3$ surfaces, and $(S^2 \times S^2) # (S^2 \times S^2).$ We also establish a principle which leads to a conjecture for homology manifolds which is almost logically equivalent to the $g$-conjecture for homology spheres. Lastly, we show that with sufficiently many vertices, every triangulable homology manifold without boundary of dimension three or greater can be triangulated in a 2-neighborly fashion.

Polyhedral tori with minimal coordinates
We give explicit realizations with small integer coordinates for all triangulated tori with up to 12 vertices. In particular, we provide coordinate-minimal realizations in general position for all triangulations of the torus with 7, 8, 9, and 10 vertices. For the unique 7-vertex triangulation of the torus we show that all corresponding 72 oriented matroids are realizable in the 6x6x6-cube. Moreover, we present polyhedral tori with 8 vertices in the 2x2x2-cube, general position realizations of triangulated tori with 8 vertices in the 2x2x3-cuboid as well as polyhedral tori with 9 and 10 vertices in the 1x2x2-cuboid.

Decomposition and Enumeration of Triangulated Surfaces

We describe some theoretical results on triangulations of surfaces and we develop a theory on roots, decompositions and genus-surfaces. We apply this theory to describe an algorithm to list all triangulations of closed surfaces with at most a fixed number of vertices. We specialize the theory for the case where the number of vertices is at most 11 and we get theoretical restrictions on genus-surfaces allowing us to get the list of triangulations of closed surfaces with at most 11 vertices.

Universal derived equivalences of posets
By using only combinatorial data on two posets X and Y, we construct a set of so-called formulas. A formula produces simultaneously, for any abelian category A, a functor between the categories of complexes of diagrams over X and Y with values in A. This functor induces a triangulated functor between the corresponding derived categories. This allows us to prove, for pairs X, Y of posets sharing certain common underlying combinatorial structure, that for any abelian category A, regardless of its nature, the categories of diagrams over X and Y with values in A are derived equivalent.

On Derived Equivalences of Categories of Sheaves Over Finite Posets
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra 212 (2008), 435-451. • View PublicationBIB
A finite poset X carries a natural structure of a topological space. Fix a field k, and denote by D(X) the bounded derived category of sheaves of finite dimensional k-vector spaces over X. Two posets X and Y are said to be derived equivalent if D(X) and D(Y) are equivalent as triangulated categories. We give explicit combinatorial properties of a poset which are invariant under derived equivalence, among them are the number of points, the Z-congruency class of the incidence matrix, and the Betti numbers. Then we construct, for any closed subset Y of X, a strongly exceptional collection in D(X) and use it to show an equivalence between D(X) and the bounded derived category of a finite dimensional algebra A (depending on Y). We give conditions on X and Y under which A becomes an incidence algebra of a poset. We deduce that a lexicographic sum of a collection of posets along a bipartite graph is derived equivalent to the lexicographic sum of the same collection along the opposite graph. This construction produces many new derived equivalences of posets and generalizes other well known ones. As a corollary we show that the derived equivalence class of an ordinal sum of two posets does not depend on the order of summands. We give an example that this is not true for three summands.

We present a fast enumeration algorithm for combinatorial 2- and 3-manifolds. In particular, we enumerate all triangulated surfaces with 11 and 12 vertices and all triangulated 3-manifolds with 11 vertices. We further determine all equivelar polyhedral maps on the non-orientable surface of genus 4 as well as all equivelar triangulations of the orientable surface of genus 3 and the non-orientable surfaces of genus 5 and 6.

Combinatorial modulus and type of graphs
Published in Topology and its Applications Volume 156, Issue 17, 1 November 2009, Pages 2747-2761 • View PublicationBIB
Let a $A$ be the 1-skeleton of a triangulated topological annulus. We establish bounds on the combinatorial modulus of a refinement $A'$, formed by attaching new vertices and edges to $A$, that depend only on the refinement and not on the structure of $A$ itself. This immediately applies to showing that a disk triangulation graph may be refined without changing its combinatorial type, provided the refinement is not too wild. We also explore the type problem in terms of disk growth, proving a parabolicity condition based on a superlinear growth rate, which we also prove optimal. We prove our results with no degree restrictions in both the EEL and VEL settings and examine type problems for more general complexes and dual graphs.

Cluster algebras and triangulated surfaces. Part I: Cluster complexes

We establish basic properties of cluster algebras associated with oriented bordered surfaces with marked points. In particular, we show that the underlying cluster complex of such a cluster algebra does not depend on the choice of coefficients, describe this complex explicitly in terms of "tagged triangulations" of the surface, and determine its homotopy type and its growth rate.

Generalized cluster complexes via quiver representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a quiver representation theoretic interpretation of generalized cluster complexes defined by Fomin and Reading. By using $d-$cluster categories which are defined by Keller as triangulated orbit categories of (bounded) derived categories of representations of valued quivers, we define a $d-$compatibility degree $(-||-)$ on any pair of ``colored'' almost positive real Schur roots which generalizes previous definitions on the non-colored case, and call two such roots compatible provided the $d-$compatibility degree of them is zero. Associated to the root system $Φ$ corresponding to the valued quiver, by using this compatibility relation, we define a simplicial complex which has colored almost positive real Schur roots as vertices and $d-$compatible subsets as simplicies. If the valued quiver is an alternating quiver of a Dynkin diagram, then this complex is the generalized cluster complex defined by Fomin and Reading.

Monomial ideals, edge ideals of hypergraphs, and their graded Betti numbers
We use the correspondence between hypergraphs and their associated edge ideals to study the minimal graded free resolution of squarefree monomial ideals. The theme of this paper is to understand how the combinatorial structure of a hypergraph H appears within the resolution of its edge ideal I(H). We discuss when recursive formulas to compute the graded Betti numbers of I(H) in terms of its sub-hypergraphs can be obtained; these results generalize our previous work on the edge ideals of simple graphs. We introduce a class of hypergraphs, which we call properly-connected, that naturally generalizes simple graphs from the point of view that distances between intersecting edges are ``well behaved''. For such a hypergraph H (and thus, for any simple graph), we give a lower bound for the regularity of I(H) via combinatorial information describing H, and an upper bound for the regularity when H = G is a simple graph. We also introduce triangulated hypergraphs, a properly-connected hypergraph which is a generalization of chordal graphs. When H is a triangulated hypergraph, we explicitly compute the regularity of I(H) and show that the graded Betti numbers of I(H) are independent of the ground field. As a consequence, many known results about the graded Betti numbers of forests can now be extended to chordal graphs.

Combinatorial 3-manifolds with 10 vertices
We give a complete enumeration of all combinatorial 3-manifolds with 10 vertices: There are precisely 247882 triangulated 3-spheres with 10 vertices as well as 518 vertex-minimal triangulations of the sphere product $S^2\times S^1$ and 615 triangulations of the twisted sphere product $S^2_\times_S^1$. All the 3-spheres with up to 10 vertices are shellable, but there are 29 vertex-minimal non-shellable 3-balls with 9 vertices.

Higher minors and Van Kampen's obstruction
Published in Math. Scand. 101 (2007), no. 2, 161--176 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the notion of graph minors to all (finite) simplicial complexes. For every two simplicial complexes H and K and every nonnegative integer m, we prove that if H is a minor of K then the non vanishing of Van Kampen's obstruction in dimension m (a characteristic class indicating non embeddability in the (m-1)-sphere) for H implies its non vanishing for K. As a corollary, based on results by Van Kampen and Flores, if K has the d-skeleton of the (2d+2)-simplex as a minor, then K is not embeddable in the 2d-sphere. We answer affirmatively a problem asked by Dey et. al. concerning topology-preserving edge contractions, and conclude from it the validity of the generalized lower bound inequalities for a special class of triangulated spheres.
