Transversal structures on triangulations: a combinatorial study and straight-line drawings

This article focuses on a combinatorial structure specific to triangulated plane graphs with quadrangular outer face and no separating triangle, which are called irreducible triangulations. The structure has been introduced by Xin He under the name of regular edge-labelling and consists of two bipolar orientations that are transversal. For this reason, the terminology used here is that of transversal structures. The main results obtained in the article are a bijection between irreducible triangulations and ternary trees, and a straight-line drawing algorithm for irreducible triangulations. For a random irreducible triangulation with $n$ vertices, the grid size of the drawing is asymptotically with high probability $11n/27\times 11n/27$ up to an additive error of $\cO(\sqrt{n})$. In contrast, the best previously known algorithm for these triangulations only guarantees a grid size $(\lceil n/2\rceil -1)\times \lfloor n/2\rfloor$.
Triangulated Manifolds with Few Vertices: Vertex-Transitive Triangulations I
We describe an algorithm for the enumeration of (candidates of) vertex-transitive combinatorial $d$-manifolds. With an implementation of our algorithm, we determine, up to combinatorial equivalence, all combinatorial manifolds with a vertex-transitive automorphism group on $n\leq 13$ vertices. With the exception of actions of groups of small order, the enumeration is extended to 14 and 15 vertices.
Triangulated Manifolds with Few Vertices: Combinatorial Manifolds
In this survey on combinatorial properties of triangulated manifolds we discuss various lower bounds on the number of vertices of simplicial and combinatorial manifolds. Moreover, we give a list of all known examples of vertex-minimal triangulations.

We discuss different approaches for the enumeration of triangulated surfaces. In particular, we enumerate all triangulated surfaces with 9 and 10 vertices. We also show how geometric realizations of orientable surfaces with few vertices can be obtained by choosing coordinates randomly.
Matroid polytopes, nested sets and Bergman fans
The tropical variety defined by linear equations with constant coefficients is the Bergman fan of the corresponding matroid. Building on a self-contained introduction to matroid polytopes, we present a geometric construction of the Bergman fan, and we discuss its relationship with the simplicial complex of nested sets in the lattice of flats. The Bergman complex is triangulated by the nested set complex, and the two complexes coincide if and only if every connected flat remains connected after contracting along any subflat. This sharpens a result of Ardila-Klivans who showed that the Bergman complex is triangulated by the order complex of the lattice of flats. The nested sets specify the De Concini-Procesi compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement, while the Bergman fan specifies the tropical compactification. These two compactifications are almost equal, and we highlight the subtle differences.

Gluck (1975) has proven that triangulated 2-spheres are generically 3-rigid. Equivalently, planar graphs are generically 3-stress free. We show that linklessly embeddable graphs are generically 4-stress free. Both of these results are corollaries of the following theorem: every K_{r+2}-minor free graph is generically r-stress free for 0<r<5. (This assertion is false for r>5.) We give an equivalent formulation of this theorem in the language of symmetric algebraic shifting and show that its analogue for exterior algebraic shifting also holds. Some further extensions are detailed.
Triangulated Manifolds with Few Vertices: Centrally Symmetric Spheres and Products of Spheres
The aim of this paper is to give a survey of the known results concerning centrally symmetric polytopes, spheres, and manifolds. We further enumerate nearly neighborly centrally symmetric spheres and centrally symmetric products of spheres with dihedral or cyclic symmetry on few vertices, and we present an infinite series of vertex-transitive nearly neighborly centrally symmetric 3-spheres.
Computing Invariants of Simplicial Manifolds
This is a survey of known algorithms in algebraic topology with a focus on finite simplicial complexes and, in particular, simplicial manifolds. Wherever possible an elementary approach is chosen. This way the text may also serve as a condensed but very basic introduction to the algebraic topology of simplicial manifolds.
This text will appear as a chapter in the forthcoming book "Triangulated Manifolds with Few Vertices" by Frank H. Lutz.
Triangulated Manifolds with Few Vertices: Geometric 3-Manifolds
We explicitly construct small triangulations for a number of well-known 3-dimensional manifolds and give a brief outline of some aspects of the underlying theory of 3-manifolds and its historical development.

We present a constructive proof of Ky Fan's combinatorial lemma concerning labellings of triangulated spheres. Our construction works for triangulations of $S^n$ that contain a flag of hemispheres. As a consequence, we produce a constructive proof of Tucker's lemma that holds for a larger class of triangulations than previous constructive proofs.

In this article we introduce the flow polynomial of a digraph and use it to study nowhere-zero flows from a commutative algebraic perspective. Using Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, we establish a relation between nowhere-zero flows and dual flows. For planar graphs this gives a relation between nowhere-zero flows and flows of their planar duals. It also yields an appealing proof that every bridgeless triangulated graph has a nowhere-zero four-flow.

We construct 2^{Ω(n^{5/4})} combinatorial types of triangulated 3-spheres on n vertices. Since by a result of Goodman and Pollack (1986) there are no more than 2^{O(n log n)} combinatorial types of simplicial 4-polytopes, this proves that asymptotically, there are far more combinatorial types of triangulated 3-spheres than of simplicial 4-polytopes on n vertices. This complements results of Kalai (1988), who had proved a similar statement about d-spheres and (d+1)-polytopes for fixed d >= 4.

We study rational homology groups of one-point compactifications of spaces of complex monic polynomials with multiple roots. These spaces are indexed by number partitions. A standard reformulation in terms of quotients of orbit arrangements reduces the problem to studying certain triangulated spaces $X_{λ,μ}$.
We present a combinatorial description of the cell structure of $X_{λ,μ}$ using the language of marked forests. As applications we obtain a new proof of a theorem of Arnold and a counterexample to a conjecture of Sundaram and Welker, along with a few other smaller results.
Kalai's squeezed 3-spheres are polytopal

In 1988, Kalai extended a construction of Billera and Lee to produce many triangulated (d-1)-spheres. In fact, in view of upper bounds on the number of simplicial d-polytopes by Goodman and Pollack, he derived that for every dimension d>=5, most of these (d-1)-spheres are not polytopal. However, for d=4, this reasoning fails. We can now show that, as already conjectured by Kalai, all of his 3-spheres are in fact polytopal.
Moreover, we can now give a shorter proof of Hebble & Lee's 2000 result that the dual graphs of these 4-polytopes are Hamiltonian. Therefore, the polars of these Kalai polytopes yield another family supporting Barnette's conjecture that all simple 4-polytopes admit a Hamiltonian circuit.
An intrinsic homotopy theory for simplicial complexes, with applications to image analysis

A simplicial complex is a set equipped with a down-closed family of distinguished finite subsets. This structure, usually viewed as codifying a triangulated space, is used here directly, to describe "spaces" whose geometric realisation can be misleading. An intrinsic homotopy theory, not based on such realisation but agreeing with it, is introduced.
The applications developed here are aimed at image analysis in metric spaces and have connections with digital topology and mathematical morphology. A metric space X has a structure of simplicial complex at each (positive) resolution e; the resulting n-homotopy group detects those singularities which can be captured by an n-dimensional grid, with edges bound by e; this works equally well for continuous or discrete regions of euclidean spaces. Its computation is based on direct, intrinsic methods.
