Dense circuit graphs and the planar Turán number of a cycle
The $\textit{planar Turán number}$ $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,H)$ of a graph $H$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph without $H$ as a subgraph. Let $C_k$ denote the cycle of length $k$. The planar Turán number $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_k)$ is known for $k\le 7$. We show that dense planar graphs with a certain connectivity property (known as circuit graphs) contain large near triangulations, and we use this result to obtain consequences for planar Turán numbers. In particular, we prove that there is a constant $D$ so that $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_k) \le 3n - 6 - Dn/k^{\log_2^3}$ for all $k, n\ge 4$. When $k \ge 11$ this bound is tight up to the constant $D$ and proves a conjecture of Cranston, Lidický, Liu, and Shantanam.
Outerplanar Turán number of a cycle
A graph is outerplanar if it has a planar drawing for which all vertices belong to the outer face of the drawing. Let $H$ be a graph. The outerplanar Turán number of $H$, denoted by $ex_\mathcal{OP}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex outerplanar graph which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. In 2021, L. Fang et al. determined the outerplanar Turán number of cycles and paths. In this paper, we use techniques of dual graph to give a shorter proof for the sharp upperbound of $ex_\mathcal{OP}(n,C_k)\leq \frac{(2k - 5)(kn - k - 1)}{k^2 - 2k - 1}$.

Sidorenko Hypergraphs and Random Turán Numbers
Let $\mathrm{ex}(G_{n,p}^r,F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free subgraph of the random $r$-uniform hypergraph $G_{n,p}^r$, and let $s(F):=\sup\{s: \exists H,\ t_F(H)=t_{K_r^r}(H)^{s+e(F)}>0\}$. Following recent work of Conlon, Lee, and Sidorenko, we prove non-trivial lower bounds on $\mathrm{ex}(G_{n,p}^r,F)$ whenever $s(F)>0$, i.e. $F$ is not Sidorenko. This connection between Sidorenko's conjecture and random Turán problems gives new lower bounds on $\mathrm{ex}(G_{n,p}^r,F)$ whenever $s(F)>0$, and further allows us to establish upper bounds for $s(F)$ whenever upper bounds for $\mathrm{ex}(G_{n,p}^r,F)$ are known. As a consequence, we prove that $s(\mathrm{E}^r(K_{k+1}^k))=\frac{1}{r-k}$ where $\mathrm{E}^r(K_{k+1}^k)$ is the $r$-expansion of $K_{k+1}^k$.
Maximum cliques in a graph without disjoint given subgraph
The generalized Turán number $\ex(n,K_s,F)$ denotes the maximum number of copies of $K_s$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. Let $kF$ denote $k$ disjoint copies of $F$. Gerbner, Methuku and Vizer [DM, 2019, 3130-3141] gave a lower bound for $\ex(n,K_3,2C_5)$ and obtained the magnitude of $\ex(n, K_s, kK_r)$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\ex(n,K_3,2C_5)$ and described the unique extremal graph for large $n$. Moreover, we also determine the exact value of $\ex(n,K_r,(k+1)K_r)$ which generalizes some known results.

On generalized Turán problems with bounded matching number
Given a graph $H$ and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex graphs that do not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. Recently there has been interest in studying the case $\mathcal{F}=\{F,M_{s+1}\}$ for arbitrary $F$ and $H=K_r$. We extend these investigations to the case $H$ is arbitrary as well.

Log-concavity with respect to the number of orbits for infinite tuples of commuting permutations
Let $A(p,n,k)$ be the number of $p$-tuples of commuting permutations of $n$ elements whose permutation action results in exactly $k$ orbits or connected components. We formulate the conjecture that, for every fixed $p$ and $n$, the $A(p,n,k)$ form a log-concave sequence with respect to $k$. For $p=1$ this is a well known property of unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind. As the $p=2$ case, our conjecture includes a previous one by Heim and Neuhauser, which strengthens a unimodality conjecture for the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook length polynomials. In this article, we prove the $p=\infty$ case of our conjecture. We start from an expression for the $A(p,n,k)$ which follows from an identity by Bryan and Fulman, obtained in the their study of orbifold higher equivariant Euler characteristics. We then derive the $p\rightarrow\infty$ asymptotics. The last step essentially amounts to the log-concavity in $k$ of a generalized Turán number, namely, the maximum product of $k$ positive integers whose sum is $n$.

The planar Turán number of $\{K_4,C_5\}$ and $\{K_4,C_6\}$
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a set of graphs. The planar Turán number, $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\mathcal{H})$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain any member of $\mathcal{H}$ as a subgraph. When $\mathcal{H}=\{H\}$ has only one element, we usually write $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,H)$ instead. The topic of extremal planar graphs was initiated by Dowden (2016). He obtained sharp upper bound for both $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_5)$ and $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,K_4)$. Later on, we obtained sharper bound for $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_7\})$. In this paper, we give upper bounds of $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_5\})\leq {15\over 7}(n-2)$ and $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_6\})\leq {7\over 3}(n-2)$. We also give constructions which show the bounds are tight for infinitely many graphs.

Extremal problems for a matching and any other graph
For a family of graphs $\F$, a graph is called $\F$-free if it does not contain any member of $\F$ as a subgraph. The generalized Turán number $\ex(n,K_r,\F)$ is the maximum number of $K_r$ in an $n$-vertex $\F$-free graph and $\ex(n,K_2,\F)=\ex(n,\F)$, i.e., the classical Turán number. Let $M_{s+1}$ be a matching on $s+1$ edges and $F$ be any graph. In this paper, we determine $\ex(n,K_r, \{M_{s+1},F\})$ apart from a constant additive term and also give a condition when the error constant term can be determined. In particular, we give the exact value of $\ex(n,\{M_{s+1},F\})$ for $F$ being any non-bipartite graph or some bipartite graphs. Furthermore, we determine $\ex(n,K_r,\{M_{s+1},F\})$ when $F$ is color critical with $χ(F)\ge \max\{r+1,4\}$. These extend the results in [2,11,18].

MaxCut in graphs with sparse neighborhoods
Let $G$ be a graph with $m$ edges and let $\mathrm{mc}(G)$ denote the size of a largest cut of $G$. The difference $\mathrm{mc}(G)-m/2$ is called the surplus $\mathrm{sp}(G)$ of $G$. A fundamental problem in MaxCut is to determine $\mathrm{sp}(G)$ for $G$ without specific structure, and the degree sequence $d_1,\ldots,d_n$ of $G$ plays a key role in getting lower bounds of $\mathrm{sp}(G)$. A classical example, given by Shearer, is that $\mathrm{sp}(G)=Ω(\sum_{i=1}^n\sqrt d_i)$ for triangle-free graphs $G$, implying that $\mathrm{sp}(G)=Ω(m^{3/4})$. It was extended to graphs with sparse neighborhoods by Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov. In this paper, we establish a novel and stronger result for a more general family of graphs with sparse neighborhoods. Our result can derive many well-known bounds on surplus of $H$-free graphs for different $H$, such as triangles, even cycles, graphs having a vertex whose removal makes them acyclic, or complete bipartite graphs $K_{s,t}$ with $s\in \{2,3\}$. It can also deduce many new (tight) bounds on $\mathrm{sp}(G)$ in $H$-free graphs $G$ when $H$ is any graph having a vertex whose removal results in a bipartite graph with relatively small Turán number, especially the even wheel. This contributes to a conjecture raised by Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov. Moreover, we obtain new families of graphs $H$ such that $\mathrm{sp}(G)=Ω(m^{3/4+ε(H)})$ for some constant $ε(H)>0$ in $H$-free graphs $G$, giving evidences to a conjecture suggested by Alon, Bollobás, Krivelevich and Sudakov.

The planar Turán number of the seven-cycle
The planar Turán number, $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. The topic of extremal planar graphs was initiated by Dowden (2016). He obtained sharp upper bound for both $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_4)$ and $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_5)$. Later on, D. Ghosh et al. obtained sharp upper bound of $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_6)$ and proposed a conjecture on $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_k)$ for $k\geq 7$. In this paper, we give a sharp upper bound $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_7)\leq {18\over 7}n-{48\over 7}$, which satisfies the conjecture of D. Ghosh et al. It turns out that this upper bound is also sharp for $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_7\})$, the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $K_4$ or $C_7$ as a subgraph.

Turán number of the odd-ballooning of complete bipartite graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory,2024 • Search Publication
Given a graph $L$, the Turán number $\textrm{ex}(n,L)$ is the maximum possible number of edges in an $n$-vertex $L$-free graph. The study of Turán number of graphs is a central topic in extremal graph theory. Although the celebrated Erdős-Stone-Simonovits theorem gives the asymptotic value of $\textrm{ex}(n,L)$ for nonbipartite $L$, it is challenging in general to determine the exact value of $\textrm{ex}(n,L)$ for $χ(L) \geq 3$. The odd-ballooning of $H$ is a graph such that each edge of $H$ is replaced by an odd cycle and all new vertices of odd cycles are distinct. Here the length of odd cycles is not necessarily equal. The exact value of Turán number of the odd-ballooning of $H$ is previously known for $H$ being a cycle, a path, a tree with assumptions, and $K_{2,3}$. In this paper, we manage to obtain the exact value of Turán number of the odd-ballooning of $K_{s,t}$ with $2\leq s \leq t$, where $(s,t) \not \in \{(2,2),(2,3)\} $ and each odd cycle has length at least five.

Exact generalized Turán number for $K_3$ versus suspension of $P_4$
Published in Discrete Mathematics 347 (4) 2024, Article 113866 • View PublicationBIB
Let $P_4$ denote the path graph on $4$ vertices. The suspension of $P_4$, denoted by $\widehat P_4$, is the graph obtained via adding an extra vertex and joining it to all four vertices of $P_4$. In this note, we demonstrate that for $n\ge 8$, the maximum number of triangles in any $n$-vertex graph not containing $\widehat P_4$ is $\left\lfloor n^2/8\right\rfloor$. Our method uses simple induction along with computer programming to prove a base case of the induction hypothesis.

Combinatorial Nullstellensatz and Turán numbers of complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs
In this note we describe how Lasoń's generalization of Alon's Combinatorial Nullstellensatz gives a framework for constructing lower bounds on the Turán number $\operatorname{ex}(n, K^{(r)}_{s_1,\dots,s_r})$ of the complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph $K^{(r)}_{s_1,\dots,s_r}$. To illustrate the potential of this method, we give a short and simple explicit construction for the Erdős box problem, showing that $\operatorname{ex}(n, K^{(r)}_{2,\dots,2}) = Ω(n^{r - 1/r})$, which asymptotically matches best known bounds when $r \leq 4$.

Spectral extremal graphs for edge blow-up of star forests
The edge blow-up of a graph $G$, denoted by $G^{p+1}$, is obtained by replacing each edge of $G$ with a clique of order $p+1$, where the new vertices of the cliques are all distinct. Yuan [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B, 152 (2022) 379-398] determined the range of the Turán numbers for edge blow-up of all bipartite graphs and the exact Turán numbers for edge blow-up of all non-bipartite graphs. In this paper we prove that the graphs with the maximum spectral radius in an $n$-vertex graph without any copy of edge blow-up of star forests are the extremal graphs for edge blow-up of star forests when $n$ is sufficiently large.

Planar Turán number of the 7-cycle
The $\textit{planar Turán number}$ $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,H)$ of a graph $H$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph without $H$ as a subgraph. Let $C_{\ell}$ denote the cycle of length $\ell$. The planar Turán number $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_{\ell})$ behaves differently for $\ell\le 10$ and for $\ell\ge 11$, and it is known when $\ell \in \{3,4,5,6\}$. We prove that $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_7) \le \frac{18n}{7} - \frac{48}{7}$ for all $n > 38$, and show that equality holds for infinitely many integers $n$.

Turán numbers of general hypergraph star forests
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $r$-uniform hypergraphs, and let $H$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph. Then $H$ is called $\mathcal{F}$-free if it does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph. The Turán number of $\mathcal{F}$, denoted by $ex_r(n,\mathcal{F})$, is the maximum number of hyperedges in an $\mathcal{F}$-free $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph. Our current results are motivated by earlier results on Turán numbers of star forests and hypergraph star forests. In particular, Lidický, Liu and Palmer [Electron. J. Combin. 20 (2013)] determined the Turán number $ex(n,F)$ of a star forest $F$ for sufficiently large $n$. Recently, Khormali and Palmer [European. J. Combin. 102 (2022) 103506] generalized the above result to three different well-studied hypergraph settings, but restricted to the case that all stars in the hypergraph star forests are identical. We further generalize these results to general hypergraph star forests.

Anti-Ramsey number of matchings in $3$-uniform hypergraphs
Let $n,s,$ and $k$ be positive integers such that $k\geq 3$, $s\geq 3$ and $n\geq ks$. An $s$-matching $M_s$ in a $k$-uniform hypergraph is a set of $s$ pairwise disjoint edges. The anti-Ramsey number $\textrm{ar}(n,k,M_s)$ of an $s$-matching is the smallest integer $c$ such that each edge-coloring of the $n$-vertex $k$-uniform complete hypergraph with exactly $c$ colors contains an $s$-matching with distinct colors. In 2013, Özkahya and Young proposed a conjecture on the exact value of ar$(n,k,M_s)$ for all $n \geq sk$ and $k \geq 3$. A 2019 result by Frankl and Kupavskii verified this conjecture for all $n \geq sk+(s-1)(k-1)$ and $k \geq 3$. We aim to determine the value of ar$(n,3,M_s)$ for $3s \leq n < 5s-2$ in this paper. Namely, we prove that if $3s<n<5s-2$ and $n$ is large enough, then ar$(n,3,M_s)=\textrm{ex}(n,3,M_{s-1})+2$. Here $\textrm{ex}(n,3,M_{s-1})$ is the Turán number of an $(s-1)$-matching. Thus this result confirms the conjecture of Özkahya and Young for $k=3$, $3s<n<5s-2$ and sufficiently large $n$. For $n=ks$ and $k\geq 3$, we present a new construction for the lower bound of $\textrm{ar}(n,k,M_{s})$ which shows the conjecture by Özkahya and Young is not true. In particular, for $n=3s$, we prove that $\textrm{ar}(n,3,M_s)=\textrm{ex}(n,3,M_{s-1})+5$ for sufficiently large $n$.

The Turán number of path-star forests
The Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in any graph on $n$ vertices containing no $H$ as a subgraph. A linear (star) forest is a forest consisting of paths (stars). A path-star forest $F$ is a forest consisting of paths and stars. In this paper, we determine $ex(n,F)$ for sufficiently large $n$ and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs, and our result generalizes previous known results on the Turán numbers of linear forests and star forests.

On the Halin Turán number of short cycles
A Halin graph is a graph constructed by embedding a tree with no vertex of degree two in the plane and then adding a cycle to join the tree's leaves. The Halin Turán number of a graph $F$, denoted as $\ex_{\hh}(n,F)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex Halin graph. In this paper, we give the exact value of $\ex_{\mathcal{H}}(n,C_4)$, where $C_4$ is a cycle of length 4. We also pose a conjecture for the Halin Turán number of longer cycles.

Random Turán theorem for expansions of spanning subgraphs of tight trees
The $r$-expansion of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, denoted by $H^{(+r)}$, is an $r$-uniform hypergraph obtained by enlarging each $k$-edge of $H$ with a set of $r-k$ vertices of degree one. The random Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(G^r_{n,p},H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of $G^r_{n,p}$, where $G^r_{n,p}$ is the Erdős-Rényi random $r$-graph with parameter $p$. In this paper, we prove an upper bound for $\mathrm{ex}(G^r_{n,p},H)$ when $H$ belongs to a large family of $r$-partite $r$-graphs: the $r$-expansion of spanning subgraphs of tight trees. This upper bound is essentially tight for at least the following two families of hypergraphs. 1. Our upper bounds are essentially tight for expansions of $K^{k-1}_{k}$, the complete $(k-1)$-graph on $k$ vertices. The proof of the lower bound makes use of a recent construction of Gowers and Janzer generalizing the famous Ruzsa-Szemerëdi construction. In particular, when $k=3$, this answers a question of the current author, Spiro and Verstraëte concerning the random Turán number of linear triangle. 2. Let $T$ be a tight tree such that the intersection of all edges of $T$ is empty. Simple construction shows that the upper bounds we have for expansions of $T$ are essentially tight. The main technical contribution of this paper is a new way to obtain balanced supersaturation results for expansions of hypergraphs: we combine two ideas, one of Mubayi-Yepremyan and another of Balogh-Narayanan-Skokan, via codegree dichotomy. We note that neither of these two ideas alone would be enough to recover results in this paper.
