Playing jeu de taquin on d-complete posets
Using a modified version of jeu de taquin, Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii gave a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for counting standard Young tableaux of fixed shape. In this paper we consider a natural extension of jeu de taquin to arbitrary posets. Given a poset P, jeu de taquin defines a map from the set of bijective labelings of the poset elements with $\{1,2,...,|P|\}$ to the set of linear extensions of the poset. One question of particular interest is for which posets this map yields each linear extension equally often. We analyze the double-tailed diamond poset $D_{m,n}$ and show that uniform distribution is obtained if and only if $D_{m,n}$ is d-complete. Furthermore, we observe that the extended hook-length formula for counting linear extensions on d-complete posets provides a combinatorial answer to a seemingly unrelated question, namely: Given a uniformly random standard Young tableau of fixed shape, what is the expected value of the left-most entry in the second row?

Euler tours and unicycles in the rotor-router model
Published • View PublicationBIB
A recurrent state of the rotor-routing process on a finite sink-free graph can be represented by a unicycle that is a connected spanning subgraph containing a unique directed cycle. We distinguish between short cycles of length 2 called "dimers" and longer ones called "contours". Then the rotor-router walk performing an Euler tour on the graph generates a sequence of dimers and contours which exhibits both random and regular properties. Imposing initial conditions randomly chosen from the uniform distribution we calculate expected numbers of dimers and contours and correlation between them at two successive moments of time in the sequence. On the other hand, we prove that the excess of the number of contours over dimers is an invariant depending on planarity of the subgraph but not on initial conditions. In addition, we analyze the mean-square displacement of the rotor-router walker in the recurrent state.
Determinants, their applications to Markov processes, and a random walk proof of Kirchhoff's matrix tree theorem
Kirchhoff's matrix tree theorem is a well-known result that gives a formula for the number of spanning trees in a finite, connected graph in terms of the graph Laplacian matrix. A closely related result is Wilson's algorithm for putting the uniform distribution on the set of spanning trees. We will show that when one follows Greg Lawler's strategy for proving Wilson's algorithm, Kirchhoff's theorem follows almost immediately after one applies some elementary linear algebra. We also show that the same ideas can be applied to other computations related to general Markov chains and processes on a finite state space.

Limit shapes of bumping routes in the Robinson-Schensted correspondence
Published in Random Struct. Alg., 48 (2016), no. 1, 171-182 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a limit shape theorem describing the asymptotic shape of bumping routes when the Robinson-Schensted algorithm is applied to a finite sequence of independent, identically distributed random variables with the uniform distribution $U[0,1]$ on the unit interval, followed by an insertion of a deterministic number $α$. The bumping route converges after scaling, in the limit as the length of the sequence tends to infinity, to an explicit, deterministic curve depending only on $α$. This extends our previous result on the asymptotic determinism of Robinson-Schensted insertion, and answers a question posed by Moore in 2006.

Importance sampling for weighted binary random matrices with specified margins
A sequential importance sampling algorithm is developed for the distribution that results when a matrix of independent, but not identically distributed, Bernoulli random variables is conditioned on a given sequence of row and column sums. This conditional distribution arises in a variety of applications and includes as a special case the uniform distribution over zero-one tables with specified margins. The algorithm uses dynamic programming to combine hard margin constraints, combinatorial approximations, and additional non-uniform weighting in a principled way to give state-of-the-art results.

Permutation statistics of products of random permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a permutation statistic $s : S_n \to \mathbb{R}$, define the mean statistic $\bar{s}$ as the statistic which computes the mean of $s$ over conjugacy classes. We describe a way to calculate the expected value of $s$ on a product of $t$ independently chosen elements from the uniform distribution on a union of conjugacy classes $Γ\subseteq S_n$. In order to apply the formula, one needs to express the class function $\bar{s}$ as a linear combination of irreducible $S_n$-characters. We provide such expressions for several commonly studied permutation statistics, including the excedance number, inversion number, descent number, major index and $k$-cycle number. In particular, this leads to formulae for the expected values of said statistics.
Random lattice triangulations: Structure and algorithms
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2015, Vol. 25, No. 3, 1650-1685 • View PublicationBIB
The paper concerns lattice triangulations, that is, triangulations of the integer points in a polygon in $\mathbb{R}^2$ whose vertices are also integer points. Lattice triangulations have been studied extensively both as geometric objects in their own right and by virtue of applications in algebraic geometry. Our focus is on random triangulations in which a triangulation $σ$ has weight $λ^{|σ|}$, where $λ$ is a positive real parameter, and $|σ|$ is the total length of the edges in $σ$. Empirically, this model exhibits a "phase transition" at $λ=1$ (corresponding to the uniform distribution): for $λ<1$ distant edges behave essentially independently, while for $λ>1$ very large regions of aligned edges appear. We substantiate this picture as follows. For $λ<1$ sufficiently small, we show that correlations between edges decay exponentially with distance (suitably defined), and also that the Glauber dynamics (a local Markov chain based on flipping edges) is rapidly mixing (in time polynomial in the number of edges in the triangulation). This dynamics has been proposed by several authors as an algorithm for generating random triangulations. By contrast, for $λ>1$ we show that the mixing time is exponential. These are apparently the first rigorous quantitative results on the structure and dynamics of random lattice triangulations.

Distribution of residues in approximate subgroups of $\mathbb{F}_p^*$
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 140 (2012), 1--6 • Search Publication
We extend a result due to Bourgain on the uniform distribution of residues by proving that subsets of the type $f(I)\cdot H$ is equidistributed (as $p$ tends to infinity) where $f$ is a polynomial, $I$ is an interval of $\Fp$ and $H$ is an approximate subgroup of $\mathbb{F}_p^*$ with size larger than polylogarithmic in $p$.

Combinatorial Markov chains on linear extensions
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 39, Issue 4 (2014), Page 853-881 • View PublicationBIB
We consider generalizations of Schuetzenberger's promotion operator on the set L of linear extensions of a finite poset of size n. This gives rise to a strongly connected graph on L. By assigning weights to the edges of the graph in two different ways, we study two Markov chains, both of which are irreducible. The stationary state of one gives rise to the uniform distribution, whereas the weights of the stationary state of the other has a nice product formula. This generalizes results by Hendricks on the Tsetlin library, which corresponds to the case when the poset is the anti-chain and hence L=S_n is the full symmetric group. We also provide explicit eigenvalues of the transition matrix in general when the poset is a rooted forest. This is shown by proving that the associated monoid is R-trivial and then using Steinberg's extension of Brown's theory for Markov chains on left regular bands to R-trivial monoids.
Note on a partition limit theorem for rank and crank
Published • View PublicationBIB
If L is a partition of n, the rank of L is the size of the largest part minus the number of parts. Under the uniform distribution on partitions, Bringmann, Mahlburg, and Rhoades showed that the rank statistic has a limiting distribution. We identify the limit as the difference between two independent extreme value distributions and as the distribution of B(T) where B(t) is standard Brownian motion and T is the first time that an independent three-dimensional Brownian motion hits the unit sphere. The same limit holds for the crank.

Benjamini--Schramm continuity of root moments of graph polynomials
Published in European J. Combin. 52 (2016), part B, 302--320 • Search Publication
Recently, M.\ Abért and T.\ Hubai studied the following problem. The chromatic measure of a finite simple graph is defined to be the uniform distribution on its chromatic roots. Abért and Hubai proved that for a Benjamini-Schramm convergent sequence of finite graphs, the chromatic measures converge in holomorphic moments. They also showed that the normalized log of the chromatic polynomial converges to a harmonic real function outside a bounded disc. In this paper we generalize their work to a wide class of graph polynomials, namely, multiplicative graph polynomials of bounded exponential type. A special case of our results is that for any fixed complex number $v_0$ the measures arising from the Tutte polynomial $Z_{G_n}(z,v_0)$ converge in holomorphic moments if the sequence $(G_n)$ of finite graphs is Benjamini--Schramm convergent. This answers a question of Abért and Hubai in the affirmative. Even in the original case of the chromatic polynomial, our proof is considerably simpler.

Circular law for random discrete matrices of given row sum
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $M_n$ be a random matrix of size $n\times n$ and let $λ_1,...,λ_n$ be the eigenvalues of $M_n$. The empirical spectral distribution $μ_{M_n}$ of $M_n$ is defined as $$μ_{M_n}(s,t)=\frac{1}{n}# \{k\le n, \Re(λ_k)\le s; \Im(λ_k)\le t\}.$$ The circular law theorem in random matrix theory asserts that if the entries of $M_n$ are i.i.d. copies of a random variable with mean zero and variance $σ^2$, then the empirical spectral distribution of the normalized matrix $\frac{1}{σ\sqrt{n}}M_n$ of $M_n$ converges almost surely to the uniform distribution $μ_\cir$ over the unit disk as $n$ tends to infinity. In this paper we show that the empirical spectral distribution of the normalized matrix of $M_n$, a random matrix whose rows are independent random $(-1,1)$ vectors of given row-sum $s$ with some fixed integer $s$ satisfying $|s|\le (1-o(1))n$, also obeys the circular law. The key ingredient is a new polynomial estimate on the least singular value of $M_n$.

Measure Preserving Words are Primitive
Published in J. Amer. Math. Soc. 28 (2015), 63-97 • View PublicationBIB
We establish new characterizations of primitive elements and free factors in free groups, which are based on the distributions they induce on finite groups. For every finite group $G$, a word $w$ in the free group on $k$ generators induces a word map from $G^k$ to $G$. We say that $w$ is measure preserving with respect to $G$ if given uniform distribution on $G^k$, the image of this word map distributes uniformly on $G$. It is easy to see that primitive words (words which belong to some basis of the free group) are measure preserving w.r.t. all finite groups, and several authors have conjectured that the two properties are, in fact, equivalent. Here we prove this conjecture. The main ingredients of the proof include random coverings of Stallings graphs, algebraic extensions of free groups, and Möbius inversions. Our methods yield the stronger result that a subgroup of $F_k$ is measure preserving if and only if it is a free factor. As an interesting corollary of this result we resolve a question on the profinite topology of free groups and show that the primitive elements of $F_k$ form a closed set in this topology.

Spectrum of Markov generators on sparse random graphs
Published in Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics 67, 4 (2014) 621-669 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the spectrum of the infinitesimal generator of the continuous time random walk on a randomly weighted oriented graph. This is the non-Hermitian random nxn matrix L defined by L(j,k)=X(j,k) if k<>j and L(j,j)=-sum(L(j,k),k<>j), where X(j,k) are i.i.d. random weights. Under mild assumptions on the law of the weights, we establish convergence as n tends to infinity of the empirical spectral distribution of L after centering and rescaling. In particular, our assumptions include sparse random graphs such as the oriented Erdös-Rényi graph where each edge is present independently with probability p(n)->0 as long as np(n) >> (log(n))^6. The limiting distribution is characterized as an additive Gaussian deformation of the standard circular law. In free probability terms, this coincides with the Brown measure of the free sum of the circular element and a normal operator with Gaussian spectral measure. The density of the limiting distribution is analyzed using a subordination formula. Furthermore, we study the convergence of the invariant measure of L to the uniform distribution and establish estimates on the extremal eigenvalues of L.

Benjamini-Schramm convergence and the distribution of chromatic roots for sparse graphs
We define the chromatic measure of a finite simple graph as the uniform distribution on its chromatic roots. We show that for a Benjamini-Schramm convergent sequence of finite graphs, the chromatic measures converge in holomorphic moments. As a corollary, for a convergent sequence of finite graphs, we prove that the normalized log of the chromatic polynomial converges to an analytic function outside a bounded disc. This generalizes a recent result of Borgs, Chayes, Kahn and Lovász, who proved convergence at large enough positive integers and answers a question of Borgs. Our methods also lead to explicit estimates on the number of proper colorings of graphs with large girth.

Semigroups and sequential importance sampling for multiway tables
When an interval of integers between the lower bound $l_i$ and the upper bound $u_i$ is the support of the marginal distribution $n_i|(n_{i-1}, ...,n_1)$, Chen et al, 2005 noticed that sampling from the interval at each step, for $n_i$ during a sequential importance sampling (SIS) procedure, always produces a table which satisfies the marginal constraints. However, in general, the interval may not be equal to the support of the marginal distribution. In this case, the SIS procedure may produce tables which do not satisfy the marginal constraints, leading to rejection Chen et al 2006. In this paper we consider the uniform distribution as the target distribution. First we show that if we fix the number of rows and columns of the design matrix of the model for contingency tables then there exists a polynomial time algorithm in terms of the input size to sample a table from the set of all tables satisfying all marginals defined by the given model via the SIS procedure without rejection. We then show experimentally that in general the SIS procedure may have large rejection rates even with small tables. Further we show that in general the classical SIS procedure in Chen et al, 2005 can have a large rejection rate whose limit is one. When estimating the number of tables in our simulation study, we used the univariate and bivariate logistic regression models since under this model the SIS procedure seems to have higher rate of rejections even with small tables.

Limit shape of random convex polygonal lines: Even more universality
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 127 (2014), 353--399 • View PublicationBIB
The paper concerns the limit shape (under some probability measure) of convex polygonal lines with vertices on $\mathbb{Z}_+^2$, starting at the origin and with the right endpoint $n=(n_1,n_2)\to\infty$. In the case of the uniform measure, an explicit limit shape $γ^*:=\{(x_1,x_2)\in\mathbb{R}_+^2\colon \sqrt{1-x_1}+\sqrt{x_2}=1\}$ was found independently by Vershik (1994), Bárány (1995), and Sinai (1994). Recently, Bogachev and Zarbaliev (2011) proved that the limit shape $γ^*$ is universal for a certain parametric family of multiplicative probability measures generalizing the uniform distribution. In the present work, the universality result is extended to a much wider class of multiplicative measures, including (but not limited to) analogs of the three meta-types of decomposable combinatorial structures -- multisets, selections and assemblies. This result is in sharp contrast with the one-dimensional case where the limit shape of Young diagrams associated with integer partitions heavily depends on the distributional type.
Asymptotic enumeration of Minimal Automata
We determine the asymptotic proportion of minimal automata, within n-state accessible deterministic complete automata over a k-letter alphabet, with the uniform distribution over the possible transition structures, and a binomial distribution over terminal states, with arbitrary parameter b. It turns out that a fraction ~ 1-C(k,b) n^{-k+2} of automata is minimal, with C(k,b) a function, explicitly determined, involving the solution of a transcendental equation.

The diminishing segment process

Let S(1) be the segment [-1,1], and define the segments S(n) recursively in the following manner: let S(n+1) be the intersection of S(n) and a(n+1) + S(1), where the point a(n+1) is chosen randomly on the segment S(n) with uniform distribution. For the radius r(n) of S(n) we prove that n(r(n) - 1//2) converges in distribution to an exponential law, and we also show that the centre of the limiting unit interval has arcsine distribution.
