Burau representation of braid groups and $q$-rationals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a link between the new theory of $q$-deformed rational numbers and the classical Burau representation of the braid group $\mathrm{B}_3$. We apply this link to the open problem of classification of faithful complex specializations of this representation. As a result we provide an answer to this problem in terms of the singular set of the $q$-rationals and prove the faithfulness of the Burau representation specialized at complex $t\in \mathbb{C}^*$ outside the annulus $3-2\sqrt2 \leq |t| \leq 3+2\sqrt2.$
Equivariant theory for codes and lattices I
In this paper, we present a generalization of Hayden's theorem [7, Theorem 4.2] for $G$-codes over finite Frobenius rings. A lattice theoretical form of this generalization is also given. Moreover, Astumi's MacWilliams identity [1, Theorem 1] is generalized in several ways for different weight enumerators of $G$-codes over finite Frobenius rings. Furthermore, we provide the Jacobi analogue of Astumi's MacWilliams identity for $G$-codes over finite Frobenius rings. Finally, we study the relation between $G$-codes and its corresponding $G$-lattices.

Star Colouring of Bounded Degree Graphs and Regular Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 345 (6), 112850 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-star colouring of a graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G)\to\{0,1,\dots,k-1\}$ such that $f(u)\neq f(v)$ for every edge $uv$ of $G$, and every bicoloured connected subgraph of $G$ is a star. The star chromatic number of $G$, $χ_s(G)$, is the least integer $k$ such that $G$ is $k$-star colourable. We prove that $χ_s(G)\geq \lceil (d+4)/2\rceil$ for every $d$-regular graph $G$ with $d\geq 3$. We reveal the structure and properties of even-degree regular graphs $G$ that attain this lower bound. The structure of such graphs $G$ is linked with a certain type of Eulerian orientations of $G$. Moreover, this structure can be expressed in the LC-VSP framework of Telle and Proskurowski (SIDMA, 1997), and hence can be tested by an FPT algorithm with the parameter either treewidth, cliquewidth, or rankwidth. We prove that for $p\geq 2$, a $2p$-regular graph $G$ is $(p+2)$-star colourable only if $n:=|V(G)|$ is divisible by $(p+1)(p+2)$. For each $p\geq 2$ and $n$ divisible by $(p+1)(p+2)$, we construct a $2p$-regular Hamiltonian graph on $n$ vertices which is $(p+2)$-star colourable. The problem $k$-STAR COLOURABILITY takes a graph $G$ as input and asks whether $G$ is $k$-star colourable. We prove that 3-STAR COLOURABILITY is NP-complete for planar bipartite graphs of maximum degree three and arbitrarily large girth. Besides, it is coNP-hard to test whether a bipartite graph of maximum degree eight has a unique 3-star colouring up to colour swaps. For $k\geq 3$, $k$-STAR COLOURABILITY of bipartite graphs of maximum degree $k$ is NP-complete, and does not even admit a $2^{o(n)}$-time algorithm unless ETH fails.
A Construction of Asymptotically Optimal Cascaded CDC Schemes via Combinatorial Designs
A coded distributed computing (CDC) system aims to reduce the communication load in the MapReduce framework. Such a system has $K$ nodes, $N$ input files, and $Q$ Reduce functions. Each input file is mapped by $r$ nodes and each Reduce function is computed by $s$ nodes. The objective is to achieve the maximum multicast gain. There are known CDC schemes that achieve optimal communication load. In some prominent known schemes, however, $N$ and $Q$ grow too fast in terms of $K$, greatly reducing their gains in practical scenarios. To mitigate the situation, some asymptotically optimal cascaded CDC schemes with $r=s$ have been proposed by using symmetric designs. In this paper, we put forward new asymptotically optimal cascaded CDC schemes with $r=s$ by using $1$-designs. Compared with earlier schemes from symmetric designs, ours have much smaller computation loads while keeping the other relevant parameters the same. We also obtain new asymptotically optimal cascaded CDC schemes with more flexible parameters compared with previously best-performing schemes.
Boundary rigidity of 3D CAT(0) cube complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The boundary rigidity problem is a classical question from Riemannian geometry: if $(M, g)$ is a Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, is the geometry of $M$ determined up to isometry by the metric $d_g$ induced on the boundary $\partial M$? In this paper, we consider a discrete version of this problem: can we determine the combinatorial type of a finite cube complex from its boundary distances? As in the continuous case, reconstruction is not possible in general, but one expects a positive answer under suitable contractibility and non-positive curvature conditions. Indeed, in two dimensions Haslegrave gave a positive answer to this question when the complex is a finite quadrangulation of the disc with no internal vertices of degree less than $4$. We prove a $3$-dimensional generalisation of this result: the combinatorial type of a finite CAT(0) cube complex with an embedding in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be reconstructed from its boundary distances. Additionally, we prove a direct strengthening of Haslegrave's result: the combinatorial type of any finite 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex can be reconstructed from its boundary distances.
Induced subgraphs and tree decompositions XI. Local structure in even-hole-free graphs of large treewidth
We prove a conjecture of Sintiari and Trotignon that every even-hole-free graph of sufficiently large treewidth contains a four-vertex induced subgraph with at least five edges (that is, either the four-vertex complete graph or the unique four-vertex graph with five edges, also known as the diamond). In fact, we prove two stronger results: (a) For every $K_4$-free chordal graph $H$, every even-hole-free graph of sufficiently large treewidth contains either a four-vertex complete subgraph or an induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$ (when $H$ is the diamond, this yields their conjecture); and (b) For every $K_3$-free chordal graph $H$ (equivalently, for every forest $H$) and every $t \in \mathbb{N}$, every even-hole-free graph of sufficiently large treewidth contains either a $t$-vertex complete subgraph or an induced subgraph obtained from $H$ by adding a universal vertex (when $t=4$ and $H$ is the three-vertex path, this yields their conjecture). The choice of $H$ in both result is best possible: (a) fails for every graph $H$ that is not $K_4$-free and chordal, and (b) fails for every graph $H$ that is not a forest.
Infinite dimensional sequential compactness: Sequential compactness based on barriers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a generalization of sequential compactness using barriers on $ω$ extending naturally the notion introduced in [W. Kubiś and P. Szeptycki, On a topological Ramsey theorem, \emph{Canad. Math. Bull.}, 66 (2023), {156}--{165}]. We improve results from [C. Corral and O. Guzm{á}n and C. L{ó}pez-Callejas, High dimensional sequential compactness, \emph{Fund. Math.}] by building spaces that are $\mathcal{B}$-sequentially compact but no $\mathcal{C}$-sequentially compact when the barriers $\mathcal{B}$ and $\mathcal{C}$ satisfy certain rank assumption which turns out to be equivalent to a Katětov-order assumption. Such examples are constructed under the assumption $\mathfrak{b} =\mathfrak{c}$. We also exhibit some classes of spaces that are $\mathcal{B}$-sequentially compact for every barrier $\mathcal{B}$, including some classical classes of compact spaces from functional analysis, and as a byproduct we obtain some results on angelic spaces. Finally we introduce and compute some cardinal invariants naturally associated to barriers.

Corrigendum on Wiener index, Zagreb Indices and Harary index of Eulerian graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the original article ``Wiener index of Eulerian graphs'' [Discrete Applied Mathematics Volume 162, 10 January 2014, Pages 247-250], the authors state that the Wiener index (total distance) of an Eulerian graph is maximized by the cycle. We explain that the initial proof contains a flaw and note that it is a corollary of a result by Plesník, since an Eulerian graph is $2$-edge-connected. The same incorrect proof is used in two referencing papers, ``Zagreb Indices and Multiplicative Zagreb Indices of Eulerian Graphs'' [Bull. Malays. Math. Sci. Soc. (2019) 42:67-78] and ``Harary index of Eulerian graphs'' [J. Math. Chem., 59(5):1378-1394, 2021]. We give proofs of the main results of those papers and the $2$-edge-connected analogues.
Density of $3$-critical signed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We say that a signed graph is $k$-critical if it is not $k$-colorable but every one of its proper subgraphs is $k$-colorable. Using the definition of colorability due to Naserasr, Wang, and Zhu that extends the notion of circular colorability, we prove that every $3$-critical signed graph on $n$ vertices has at least $\frac{3n-1}{2}$ edges, and that this bound is asymptotically tight. It follows that every signed planar or projective-planar graph of girth at least $6$ is (circular) $3$-colorable, and for the projective-planar case, this girth condition is best possible. To prove our main result, we reformulate it in terms of the existence of a homomorphism to the signed graph $C_{3}^*$, which is the positive triangle augmented with a negative loop on each vertex.
Essentially tight bounds for rainbow cycles in proper edge-colourings
Published • View PublicationBIB
An edge-coloured graph is said to be rainbow if no colour appears more than once. Extremal problems involving rainbow objects have been a focus of much research over the last decade as they capture the essence of a number of interesting problems in a variety of areas. A particularly intensively studied question due to Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte from 2007 asks for the maximum possible average degree of a properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices without a rainbow cycle. Improving upon a series of earlier bounds, Tomon proved an upper bound of $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ for this question. Very recently, Janzer-Sudakov and Kim-Lee-Liu-Tran independently removed the $o(1)$ term in Tomon's bound, showing a bound of $O(\log^2 n)$. We prove an upper bound of $(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$ for this maximum possible average degree when there is no rainbow cycle. Our result is tight up to the $o(1)$ term, and so it essentially resolves this question. In addition, we observe a connection between this problem and several questions in additive number theory, allowing us to extend existing results on these questions for abelian groups to the case of non-abelian groups.

The complexity of the greedoid Tutte polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Tutte polynomial of three classes of greedoids: those arising from rooted graphs, rooted digraphs and binary matrices. We establish the computational complexity of evaluating each of these polynomials at each fixed rational point (x,y). In each case we show that evaluation is #P-hard except for a small number of exceptional cases when there is a polynomial time algorithm. In the binary case, establishing #P-hardness along one line relies on Vertigan's unpublished result on the complexity of counting bases of a matroid. For completeness, we include an appendix providing a proof if this result.

A Torelli theorem for graphs via quasistable divisors
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e25 • View PublicationBIB
The Torelli theorem establishes that the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve, together with the polarization provided by the theta divisor, fully characterizes the curve. In the case of nodal curves, there exists a concept known as fine compactified Jacobian. The fine compactified Jacobian of a curve comes with a natural stratification that can be regarded as a poset. Furthermore, this poset is entirely determined by the dual graph of the curve and is referred to as the poset of quasistable divisors on the graph. We present a combinatorial version of the Torelli theorem, which demonstrates that the poset of quasistable divisors of a graph completely determines the biconnected components of the graph (up to contracting separating edges). Moreover, we achieve a natural extension of this theorem to tropical curves.

Note on polychromatic coloring of hereditary hypergraph families
We exhibit a 5-uniform hypergraph that has no polychromatic 3-coloring, but all its restricted subhypergraphs with edges of size at least 3 are 2-colorable. This disproves a bold conjecture of Keszegh and the author, and can be considered as the first step to understand polychromatic colorings of hereditary hypergraph families better since the seminal work of Berge. We also show that our method cannot give hypergraphs of arbitrary high uniformity, and mention some connections to panchromatic colorings.

Fermionic construction of the $\frac{\mathbb{Z}}{2}$-graded meromorphic open-string vertex algebra and its $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted module, II
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper continues with Part I. We define the module for a $\frac{\mathbb{Z}}{2}$-graded meromorphic open-string vertex algebra that is twisted by an involution and show that the axioms are sufficient to guarantee the convergence of products and iterates of any number of vertex operators. A module twisted by the parity involution is called a canonically $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted module. As an example, we give a fermionic construction of the canonically $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted module for the $\frac{\mathbb{Z}}{2}$-graded meromorphic open-string vertex algebra constructed in Part I. Similar to the situation in Part I, the example is also built on a universal $\mathbb{Z}$-graded non-anti-commutative Fock space where a creation operator and an annihilation operator satisfy the fermionic anti-commutativity relation, while no relations exist among the creation operators or among the zero modes. The Wick's theorem still holds, though the actual vertex operator needs to be corrected from the naïve definition by normal ordering using the $\exp(Δ(x))$-operator in Part I.

Thresholds for zero-sums with small cross numbers in abelian groups
For an additive group $Γ$ the sequence $S = (g_1, \ldots, g_t)$ of elements of $Γ$ is a zero-sum sequence if $g_1 + \cdots + g_t = 0_Γ$. The cross number of $S$ is defined to be the sum $\sum_{i=1}^k 1/|g_i|$, where $|g_i|$ denotes the order of $g_i$ in $Γ$. Call $S$ good if it contains a zero-sum subsequence with cross number at most 1. In 1993, Geroldinger proved that if $Γ$ is abelian then every length $|Γ|$ sequence of its elements is good, generalizing a 1989 result of Lemke and Kleitman that had proved an earlier conjecture of Erdős and Lemke. In 1989 Chung re-proved the Lemke and Kleitman result by applying a theorem of graph pebbling, and in 2005, Elledge and Hurlbert used graph pebbling to re-prove and generalize Geroldinger's result. Here we use probabilistic theorems from graph pebbling to derive a threshold version of Geroldinger's theorem for abelian groups of a certain form. Specifically, we prove that if $p_1, \ldots, p_d$ are (not necessarily distinct) primes and $Γ_k$ has the form $\prod_{i=1}^d {\mathbb Z}_{p_i^k}$ then there is a function $τ=τ(k)$ (which we specify in Theorem 4) with the following property: if $t-τ\rightarrow\infty$ as $k\rightarrow\infty$ then the probability that $S$ is good in $Γ_k$ tends to 1.

Parameters of Quotient-Polynomial Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fiol has characterized quotient-polynomial graphs as precisely the connected graphs whose adjacency matrix generates the adjacency algebra of a symmetric association scheme. We show that a collection of non-negative integer parameters of size $d + \frac{d(d-1)}{2}$ is adequate for describing symmetric association schemes of class $d$ that are generated by the adjacency matrix of their first non-trivial relation. We use this to generate a database of the corresponding quotient-polynomial graphs that have small valency and up to 6 classes, and among these find new feasible parameter sets for symmetric association schemes with noncyclotomic eigenvalues.

LRCs: Duality, LP Bounds, and Field Size
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a duality theory of locally recoverable codes (LRCs) and apply it to establish a series of new bounds on their parameters. We introduce and study a refined notion of weight distribution that captures the code's locality. Using a duality result analogous to a MacWilliams identity, we then derive an LP-type bound that improves on the best known bounds in several instances. Using a dual distance bound and the theory of generalized weights, we obtain non-existence results for optimal LRCs over small fields. In particular, we show that an optimal LRC must have both minimum distance and block length relatively small compared to the field size.

Looms
Published • View PublicationBIB
A pair $(A,B)$ of hypergraphs is called orthogonal if $|a \cap b|=1$ for every pair of edges $a \in A$ and $b \in B$. An orthogonal pair of hypergraphs is called a loom if each of its two members is the set of minimum covers of the other. Looms appear naturally in the context of a conjecture of Gyárfás and Lehel on the covering number of cross-intersecting hypergraphs. We study their properties and ways of construction, and prove special cases of a conjecture that if true would imply the Gyárfás--Lehel conjecture.

Compact metric spaces with infinite cop number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Mohar recently adapted the classical game of Cops and Robber from graphs to metric spaces, thereby unifying previously studied pursuit-evasion games. He conjectured that finitely many cops can win on any compact geodesic metric space, and that their number can be upper-bounded in terms of the ranks of the homology groups when the space is a simplicial pseudo-manifold. We disprove these conjectures by constructing a metric on $\mathbb{S}^3$ with infinite cop number. More problems are raised than settled.
On the size of integer programs with bounded non-vanishing subdeterminants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by complexity questions in integer programming, this paper aims to contribute to the understanding of combinatorial properties of integer matrices of row rank $r$ and with bounded subdeterminants. In particular, we study the column number question for integer matrices whose every $r \times r$ minor is non-zero and bounded by a fixed constant $Δ$ in absolute value. Approaching the problem in two different ways, one that uses results from coding theory, and the other from the geometry of numbers, we obtain linear and asymptotically sublinear upper bounds on the maximal number of columns of such matrices, respectively. We complement these results by lower bound constructions, matching the linear upper bound for $r=2$, and a discussion of a computational approach to determine the maximal number of columns for small parameters $Δ$ and $r$.
