Simultaneous approximation in nilsystems and the multiplicative thickness of return-time sets
Published in Adv. Math. 457 (2024) • View Publication • BIB
In the topological dynamical system $(X,T)$, a point $x$ simultaneously approximates a point $y$ if there exists a sequence $n_1$, $n_2$, ... of natural numbers for which $T^{n_i} x$, $T^{2n_i}x$, ..., $T^{k n_i} x$ all tend to $y$. In 1978, Furstenberg and Weiss showed that every system possesses a point which simultaneously approximates itself (a multiply recurrent point) and deduced refinements of van der Waerden's theorem on arithmetic progressions. In this paper, we study the denseness of the set of points that are simultaneously approximated by a given point. We show that in a minimal nilsystem, all points simultaneously approximate a $δ$-dense set of points under a necessarily restricted set of powers of $T$. We tie this theorem to the multiplicative combinatorial properties of return-time sets, showing that all nil-Bohr sets and typical return-time sets in a minimal system are multiplicatively thick in a coset of a multiplicative subsemigroup of the natural numbers. This yields an inhomogeneous multiple recurrence result that generalizes Furstenberg and Weiss' theorem and leads to new enhancements of van der Waerden's theorem. This work relies crucially on continuity in the prolongation relation (the closure of the orbit-closure relation) developed by Auslander, Akin, and Glasner; the theory of rational points and polynomials on nilmanifolds developed by Leibman, Green, and Tao; and the machinery of topological characteristic factors developed recently by Glasner, Huang, Shao, Weiss, and Ye.

Projective tilings and full-rank perfect codes
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 91(10) 2023, 3293-3303 • View Publication • BIB
A tiling of a vector space $S$ is the pair $(U,V)$ of its subsets such that every vector in $S$ is uniquely represented as the sum of a vector from $U$ and a vector from $V$. A tiling is connected to a perfect codes if one of the sets, say $U$, is projective, i.e., the union of one-dimensional subspaces of $S$. A tiling $(U,V)$ is full-rank if the affine span of each of $U$, $V$ is $S$. For finite non-binary vector spaces of dimension at least $6$ (at least $10$), we construct full-rank tilings $(U,V)$ with projective $U$ (both $U$ and $V$, respectively). In particular, that construction gives a full-rank ternary $1$-perfect code of length $13$, solving a known problem. We also discuss the treatment of tilings with projective components as factorizations of projective spaces. Keywords: perfect codes, tilings, group factorization, full-rank tilings, projective geometry

Bumpless pipe dream RSK, growth diagrams, and Schubert structure constants
We introduce analogs of left and right RSK insertion for Schubert calculus of complete flag varieties. The objects being inserted are certain biwords, the insertion objects are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are decorated chains in Bruhat order. As an application, we adopt Lenart's growth diagrams of permutations to give a combinatorial rule for Schubert structure constants in the separated descent case.

A note on the Tuza constant $c_k$ for small $k$
Published in Discrete Mathematics 347 (2024), Article 113756 • View Publication • BIB
For a hypergraph $H$, the transversal is a subset of vertices whose intersection with every edge is nonempty. The cardinality of a minimum transversal is the transversal number of $H$, denoted by $τ(H)$. The Tuza constant $c_k$ is defined as $\sup{τ(H)/ (m+n)}$, where $H$ ranges over all $k$-uniform hypergraphs, with $m$ and $n$ being the number of edges and vertices, respectively. We give an upper bound and a lower bound on $c_k$. The upper bound improves the known ones for $k\geq 7$, and the lower bound improves the known ones for $k\in\{7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17\}$.

Graphene nanocones and Pascal matrices
I conjecture three identities for the determinant of adjacency matrices of graphene triangles and trapezia with Bloch (and more general) boundary conditions. For triangles, the parametric determinant is equal to the characteristic polynomial of the symmetric Pascal matrix. For trapezia it is equal to the determinant of a sub-matrix. Finally, the determinant of the tight binding matrix equals its permanent. The conjectures are supported by analytic evaluations and Mathematica, for moderate sizes. They establish connections with counting problems of partitions, lozenge tilings of hexagons, dense loops on a cylinder.
Thresholds for Latin squares and Steiner triple systems: Bounds within a logarithmic factor
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for $n \in \mathbb N$ and an absolute constant $C$, if $p \geq C\log^2 n / n$ and $L_{i,j} \subseteq [n]$ is a random subset of $[n]$ where each $k\in [n]$ is included in $L_{i,j}$ independently with probability $p$ for each $i, j\in [n]$, then asymptotically almost surely there is an order-$n$ Latin square in which the entry in the $i$th row and $j$th column lies in $L_{i,j}$. The problem of determining the threshold probability for the existence of an order-$n$ Latin square was raised independently by Johansson, by Luria and Simkin, and by Casselgren and H{ä}ggkvist; our result provides an upper bound which is tight up to a factor of $\log n$ and strengthens the bound recently obtained by Sah, Sawhney, and Simkin. We also prove analogous results for Steiner triple systems and $1$-factorizations of complete graphs, and moreover, we show that each of these thresholds is at most the threshold for the existence of a $1$-factorization of a nearly complete regular bipartite graph.
Combinatorial and Algorithmic Aspects of Monadic Stability
Nowhere dense classes of graphs are classes of sparse graphs with rich structural and algorithmic properties, however, they fail to capture even simple classes of dense graphs. Monadically stable classes, originating from model theory, generalize nowhere dense classes and close them under transductions, i.e. transformations defined by colorings and simple first-order interpretations. In this work we aim to extend some combinatorial and algorithmic properties of nowhere dense classes to monadically stable classes of finite graphs. We prove the following results. - In monadically stable classes the Ramsey numbers $R(s,t)$ are bounded from above by $\mathcal{O}(t^{s-1-δ})$ for some $δ>0$, improving the bound $R(s,t)\in \mathcal{O}(t^{s-1}/(\log t)^{s-1})$ known for general graphs and the bounds known for $k$-stable graphs when $s\leq k$. - For every monadically stable class $\mathcal{C}$ and every integer $r$, there exists $δ> 0$ such that every graph $G \in \mathcal{C}$ that contains an $r$-subdivision of the biclique $K_{t,t}$ as a subgraph also contains $K_{t^δ,t^δ}$ as a subgraph. This generalizes earlier results for nowhere dense graph classes. - We obtain a stronger regularity lemma for monadically stable classes of graphs. - Finally, we show that we can compute polynomial kernels for the independent set and dominating set problems in powers of nowhere dense classes. Formerly, only fixed-parameter tractable algorithms were known for these problems on powers of nowhere dense classes.
Dual structures on Coxeter and Artin groups of rank three
Published in Geom. Topol. 28 (2024) 4295-4336 • View Publication • BIB
We extend the theory of dual Coxeter and Artin groups to all rank-three Coxeter systems, beyond the previously studied spherical and affine cases. Using geometric, combinatorial, and topological techniques, we show that rank-three noncrossing partition posets are EL-shellable lattices and give rise to Garside groups isomorphic to the associated standard Artin groups. Within this framework, we prove the $K(π, 1)$ conjecture, the triviality of the center, and the solubility of the word problem for rank-three Artin groups. Some of our constructions apply to general Artin groups; we hope they will help develop complete solutions to the $K(π, 1)$ conjecture and other open problems in the area.

An improved lower bound of $P(G, L)-P(G,k)$ for $k$-assignments $L$
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory Ser. B, 2023 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, $P(G,k)$ be the chromatic polynomial of $G$, and $P(G,L)$ be the number of $L$-colorings of $G$ for any $k$-assignment $L$. In this article, we show that when $k\ge m-1\ge 3$, $P(G,L)-P(G,k)$ is bounded below by $\left ( (k-m+1)k^{n-3}+\frac{(k-m+3)c}{3} k^{n-5}\right )\sum\limits_{uv\in E}|L(u)\setminus L(v)|$, where $c\ge \frac{(m-1)(m-3)}{8}$, and in particular, if $G$ is $K_3$-free, then $c\ge {m-2\choose 2}+2\sqrt m-3$. Consequently, $P(G,L)\ge P(G,k)$ whenever $k\ge m-1$.

Linearizing Partial Search Orders
Published • View Publication • BIB
In recent years, questions about the construction of special orderings of a given graph search were studied by several authors. On the one hand, the so called end-vertex problem introduced by Corneil et al. in 2010 asks for search orderings ending in a special vertex. On the other hand, the problem of finding orderings that induce a given search tree was introduced already in the 1980s by Hagerup and received new attention most recently by Beisegel et al. Here, we introduce a generalization of some of these problems by studying the question whether there is a search ordering that is a linear extension of a given partial order on a graph's vertex set. We show that this problem can be solved in polynomial time on chordal bipartite graphs for LBFS, which also implies the first polynomial-time algorithms for the end-vertex problem and two search tree problems for this combination of graph class and search. Furthermore, we present polynomial-time algorithms for LBFS and MCS on split graphs which generalize known results for the end-vertex and search tree problems.
Online coloring of disk graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we give a family of online algorithms for the classical coloring problem of intersection graphs of discs with bounded diameter. Our algorithms make use of a geometric representation of such graphs and are inspired by an algorithm of Fiala et al., but have better competitive ratios. The improvement comes from using two techniques of partitioning the set of vertices before coloring them. One of whichis an application of a b-fold coloring of the plane. The method is more general and we show how it can be applied to coloring other shapes on the plane as well as adjust it for online L(2, 1)-labeling.

An approach to the girth problem in cubic graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We offer a new, gradual approach to the largest girth problem for cubic graphs. It is easily observed that the largest possible girth of all $n$-vertex cubic graphs is attained by a $2$-connected graph $G=(V,E)$. By Petersen's graph theorem, $E$ is the disjoint union of a $2$-factor and a perfect matching $M$. We refer to the edges of $M$ as chords and classify the cycles in $G$ by their number of chords. We define $γ_k(n)$ to be the largest integer $g$ such that every cubic $n$-vertex graph with a given perfect matching $M$ has a cycle of length at most $g$ with at most $k$ chords. Here we determine this function up to small additive constant for $k= 1, 2$ and up to a small multiplicative constant for larger $k$.

Dirichlet law for factorization of integers, polynomials and permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k \geq 2$ be an integer. We prove that factorization of integers into $k$ parts follows the Dirichlet distribution $\text{Dir}\left(\frac{1}{k},\ldots,\frac{1}{k}\right)$ by multidimensional contour integration, thereby generalizing the Deshouillers-Dress-Tenenbaum (DDT) arcsine law on divisors where $k=2$. The same holds for factorization of polynomials or permutations. Dirichlet distribution with arbitrary parameters can be modelled similarly.
Finding $k$-community structures in special graph classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a fixed integer $k\ge 2$, a $k$-community structure in an undirected graph is a partition of its vertex set into $k$ sets called communities, each of size at least two, such that every vertex of the graph has proportionally at least as many neighbours in its own community as in any other community. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a forest on $n$ vertices to admit a $k$-community structure. Furthermore, we provide an $O(n^{2})$-time algorithm that computes such a $k$-community structure in a forest, if it exists. These results extend a result of [Bazgan et al., Structural and algorithmic properties of $2$-community structure, Algorithmica, 80(6):1890-1908, 2018]. We also show that if communities are allowed to have size one, then every forest with $n \geq k\geq 2$ vertices admits a $k$-community structure that can be found in time $O(n^{2})$. We then consider threshold graphs and show that every connected threshold graph admits a $2$-community structure if and only if it is not isomorphic to a star; also if such a $2$-community structure exists, we explain how to obtain it in linear time. We further describe two infinite families of disconnected threshold graphs, containing exactly one isolated vertex, that do not admit any $2$-community structure. Finally, we present a new infinite family of connected graphs that may contain an even or an odd number of vertices without $2$-community structures, even if communities are allowed to have size one.

Saturating systems and the rank covering radius
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the concept of a rank saturating system and outline its correspondence to a rank-metric code with a given covering radius. We consider the problem of finding the value of $s_{q^m/q}(k,ρ)$, which is the minimum $\mathbb{F}_q$-dimension of a $q$-system in $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^k$ which is rank $ρ$-saturating. This is equivalent to the covering problem in the rank metric. We obtain upper and lower bounds on $s_{q^m/q}(k,ρ)$ and evaluate it for certain values of $k$ and $ρ$. We give constructions of rank $ρ$-saturating systems suggested from geometry.

Complexity of representations of coefficients of power series in classical statistical mechanics. Their classification and complexity criteria
It is declared that the aim of simplifying representations of coefficients of power series of classical statistical mechanics is to simplify a process of obtaining estimates of the coefficients using their simplified representations. The aim of the article is: to formulate criteria for the complexity (from the above point of view) of these representations and to demonstrate their application by examples of comparing Ree-Hoover representations of virial coefficients and such representations of power series coefficients that are based on the conception of the frame classification of labeled graphs. To solve these problems, mathematical notions were introduced (such as a base product, a base integral, a base linear combination of integrals, a base linear combination of integrals with coefficients of negligible complexity, a base set of base linear combinations of integrals with coefficients of negligible complexity); and a classification of representations of coefficients of power series of classical statistical mechanics is proposed. In this classification the class of base linear combinations of integrals with coefficients of negligible complexity is the most important class. It includes the most well-known representations of the coefficients of power series of classical statistical mechanics. Three criteria are formulated to estimate the comparative complexity of base linear combinations of integrals with coefficients of negligible complexity and their extensions to the totality of base sets of base linear combinations of integrals with coefficients of negligible complexity are constructed. The application of all the constructed criteria is demonstrated by examples of comparing with each other of the above power series coefficients representations. The obtained results are presented in the tables and commented.
Topological recursion for Orlov-Scherbin tau functions, and constellations with internal faces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the correlators $W_{g,n}$ arising from Orlov-Scherbin 2-Toda tau functions with rational content-weight $G(z)$, at arbitrary values of the two sets of time parameters. Combinatorially, they correspond to generating functions of weighted Hurwitz numbers and $(m,r)$-factorisations of permutations. When the weight function is polynomial, they are generating functions of constellations on surfaces in which two full sets of degrees (black/white) are entirely controlled, and in which internal faces are allowed in addition to boundaries. We give the spectral curve (the "disk" function $W_{0,1}$, and the "cylinder" function $W_{0,2}$) for this model, generalising Eynard's solution of the 2-matrix model which corresponds to $G(z)=1+z$, by the addition of arbitrarily many free parameters. Our method relies both on the Albenque-Bouttier combinatorial proof of Eynard's result by slice decompositions, which is strong enough to handle the polynomial case, and on algebraic arguments. Building on this, we establish the topological recursion (TR) for the model. Our proof relies on the fact that TR is already known at time zero (or, combinatorially, when the underlying graphs have only boundaries, and no internal faces) by work of Bychkov-Dunin-Barkowski-Kazarian-Shadrin (or Alexandrov-Chapuy-Eynard-Harnad for the polynomial case), and on the general idea of deformation of spectral curves due to Eynard and Orantin, which we make explicit in this case. As a result of TR, we obtain strong structure results for all fixed-genus generating functions.
Symplectic duality for topological recursion
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 328 (2025), no. 2, 1001-1054 • View Publication • BIB
We consider weighted double Hurwitz numbers, with the weight given by arbitrary rational function times an exponent of the completed cycles. Both special singularities are arbitrary, with the lengths of cycles controlled by formal parameters (up to some maximal length on both sides), and on one side there are also distinguished cycles controlled by degrees of formal variables. In these variables the weighted double Hurwitz numbers are presented as coefficients of expansions of some differentials that we prove to satisfy topological recursion. Our results partly resolve a conjecture that we made in [arXiv:2106.08368] and are based on a system of new explicit functional relations for the more general $(m,n)$-correlation functions, which correspond to the case when there are distinguished cycles controlled by formal variables in both special singular fibers. These $(m,n)$-correlation functions are the main theme of this paper and the latter explicit functional relations are of independent interest for combinatorics of weighted double Hurwitz numbers. We also put our results in the context of what we call the "symplectic duality", which is a generalization of the $x-y$ duality, a phenomenon known in the theory of topological recursion.

Generalized Permutants and Graph GENEOs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we establish a bridge between Topological Data Analysis and Geometric Deep Learning, adapting the topological theory of group equivariant non-expansive operators (GENEOs) to act on the space of all graphs weighted on vertices or edges. This is done by showing how the general concept of GENEO can be used to transform graphs and to give information about their structure. This requires the introduction of the new concepts of generalized permutant and generalized permutant measure and the mathematical proof that these concepts allow us to build GENEOs between graphs. An experimental section concludes the paper, illustrating the possible use of our operators to extract information from graphs. This paper is part of a line of research devoted to developing a compositional and geometric theory of GENEOs for Geometric Deep Learning.

Critical groups of arithmetical structures under a generalized star-clique operation
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 656 (2023) 324-344 • View Publication • BIB
An arithmetical structure on a finite, connected graph without loops is given by an assignment of positive integers to the vertices such that, at each vertex, the integer there is a divisor of the sum of the integers at adjacent vertices, counted with multiplicity if the graph is not simple. Associated to each arithmetical structure is a finite abelian group known as its critical group. Keyes and Reiter gave an operation that takes in an arithmetical structure on a finite, connected graph without loops and produces an arithmetical structure on a graph with one fewer vertex. We study how this operation transforms critical groups. We bound the order and the invariant factors of the resulting critical group in terms of the original arithmetical structure and critical group. When the original graph is simple, we determine the resulting critical group exactly.
