Robust Radical Sylvester-Gallai Theorem for Quadratics
We prove a robust generalization of a Sylvester-Gallai type theorem for quadratic polynomials, generalizing the result in [S'20]. More precisely, given a parameter $0 < δ\leq 1$ and a finite collection $\mathcal{F}$ of irreducible and pairwise independent polynomials of degree at most 2, we say that $\mathcal{F}$ is a $(δ, 2)$-radical Sylvester-Gallai configuration if for any polynomial $F_i \in \mathcal{F}$, there exist $δ(|\mathcal{F}| -1)$ polynomials $F_j$ such that $|\mathrm{rad}(F_i, F_j) \cap \mathcal{F}| \geq 3$, that is, the radical of $F_i, F_j$ contains a third polynomial in the set. In this work, we prove that any $(δ, 2)$-radical Sylvester-Gallai configuration $\mathcal{F}$ must be of low dimension: that is $$\dim \mathrm{span}(\mathcal{F}) = \mathrm{poly}(1/δ).$$
Convex geometries over induced paths with bounded length
Published • View Publication • BIB
Graph convexity spaces have been studied in many contexts. In particular, some studies are devoted to determine if a graph equipped with a convexity space is a {\em convex geometry}. It is well known that chordal and Ptolemaic graphs can be characterized as convex geometries with respect to the geodesic and monophonic convexities, respectively. Weak polarizable graphs, interval graphs, and proper interval graphs can also be characterized in this way. In this paper we introduce the notion of {\em $l^k$-convexity}, a natural restriction of the monophonic convexity. Let $G$ be a graph and $k\geq 2$ an integer. A subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is \textit{$l^k$-convex} if and only if for any pair of vertices $x,y$ of $S$, each induced path of length {\em at most} $k$ connecting $x$ and $y$ is completely contained in the subgraph induced by $S$. The {\em $l^k$-convexity} consists of all $l^k$-convex subsets of $G$. In this work, we characterize {\em $l^k$-convex geometries} (graphs that are convex geometries with respect to the $l^k$-convexity) for $k\in\{2,3\}$. We show that a graph $G$ is an $l^2$-convex geometry if and only if $G$ is a chordal $P_4$-free graph, and an $l^3$-convex geometry if and only if $G$ is a chordal graph with diameter at most three such that its induced gems satisfy a special "solving" property. As far as the authors know, the class of $l^3$-convex geometries is the first example of a non-hereditary class of convex geometries.

Locally compact models for approximate rings
By an approximate subring of a ring we mean an additively symmetric subset $X$ such that $X\cdot X \cup (X +X)$ is covered by finitely many additive translates of $X$. We prove that each approximate subring $X$ of a ring has a locally compact model, i.e. a ring homomorphism $f \colon \langle X \rangle \to S$ for some locally compact ring $S$ such that $f[X]$ is relatively compact in $S$ and there is a neighborhood $U$ of $0$ in $S$ with $f^{-1}[U] \subseteq 4X + X \cdot 4X$ (where $4X:=X+X+X+X$). This $S$ is obtained as the quotient of the ring $\langle X \rangle$ interpreted in a sufficiently saturated model by its type-definable ring connected component. The above theorem can be seen as a general structural result about approximate subrings: every approximate subring $X$ can be recovered up to additive commensurability as the preimage by a locally compact model $f \colon \langle X \rangle \to S$ of any relatively compact neighborhood of $0$ in $S$. It also leads to more precise structural or even classification results. For example, we deduce that every [definable] approximate subring $X$ of a ring of positive characteristic is additively commensurable with a [definable] subring contained in $4X + X \cdot 4X$. This implies that for any given $K,L \in \mathbb{N}$ there exists $C(K,L)$ such that every $K$-approximate subring $X$ (i.e. $K$ additive translates of $X$ cover $X \cdot X \cup (X+X)$) of a ring of positive characteristic $\leq L$ is additively $C(K,L)$-commensurable with a subring contained in $4X + X \cdot 4X$. We also deduce a classification of finite approximate subrings of rings without zero divisors: for every $K \in \mathbb{N}$ there exists $N(K) \in \mathbb{N}$ such that for every finite $K$-approximate subring $X$ of a ring without zero divisors either $|X| <N(K)$ or $4X + X \cdot 4X$ is a subring which is additively $K^{11}$-commensurable with $X$.

A Linearithmic Time Locally Optimal Algorithm for the Multiway Number Partition Optimization
We study the problem of multiway number partition optimization, which has a myriad of applications in the decision, learning and optimization literature. Even though the original multiway partitioning problem is NP-hard and requires exponential time complexity algorithms; we formulate an easier optimization problem, where our goal is to find a solution that is locally optimal. We propose a linearithmic time complexity $O(N\log N)$ algorithm that can produce such a locally optimal solution. Our method is robust against the input and requires neither positive nor integer inputs.

An Atomic Viewpoint of the TP Completion Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present two complementary techniques called catalysis and inhibition which allow one to determine if a given pattern is TP completable or TP non-completable, respectively. Empirically, these techniques require considering only one unspecified entry at a time in a vast majority of cases, which makes these techniques ripe for automation and a powerful framework for future work in the TP completion problem. With small modifications, these techniques are also applicable to the TN completion problem. We provide two major applications. First, we characterize all 4-by-4 patterns by completability. There are a total of 78 new obstructions of this size, six times as many as the 3-by-$n$ case for all $n$ combined. Second, we provide a characterization of the so-called 1-variable obstructions in the TN case, which includes as a corollary a characterization of patterns with a single unspecified entry. This also provides a novel partial result towards proving the conjecture that all TN-completable patterns are TP-completable.

Bounds for sets with few distances distinct modulo a prime ideal

Let $\mathcal{O}_K$ be the ring of integers of an algebraic number field $K$ embedded into $\mathbb{C}$. Let $X$ be a subset of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, and $D(X)$ be the set of the squared distances of two distinct points in $X$. In this paper, we prove that if $D(X)\subset \mathcal{O}_K$ and there exist $s$ values $a_1,\ldots, a_s \in \mathcal{O}_K$ distinct modulo a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ of $\mathcal{O}_K$ such that each $a_i$ is not zero modulo $\mathfrak{p}$ and each element of $D(X)$ is congruent to some $a_i$, then $|X| \leq \binom{d+s}{s}+\binom{d+s-1}{s-1}$.

Surrogate "Level-Based" Lagrangian Relaxation for Mixed-Integer Linear Programming
Published • View Publication • BIB
Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) plays an important role across a range of scientific disciplines and within areas of strategic importance to society. The MILP problems, however, suffer from combinatorial complexity. Because of integer decision variables, as the problem size increases, the number of possible solutions increases super-linearly thereby leading to a drastic increase in the computational effort. To efficiently solve MILP problems, a "price-based" decomposition and coordination approach is developed to exploit 1. the super-linear reduction of complexity upon the decomposition and 2. the geometric convergence potential inherent to Polyak's stepsizing formula for the fastest coordination possible to obtain near-optimal solutions in a computationally efficient manner. Unlike all previous methods to set stepsizes heuristically by adjusting hyperparameters, the key novel way to obtain stepsizes is purely decision-based: a novel "auxiliary" constraint satisfaction problem is solved, from which the appropriate stepsizes are inferred. Testing results for large-scale Generalized Assignment Problems (GAP) demonstrate that for the majority of instances, certifiably optimal solutions are obtained. For stochastic job-shop scheduling as well as for pharmaceutical scheduling, computational results demonstrate the two orders of magnitude speedup as compared to Branch-and-Cut (B&C). The new method has a major impact on the efficient resolution of complex Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) problems arising within a variety of scientific fields.

Two-colorings of normed spaces without long monochromatic unit arithmetic progressions
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 2023, Vol. 37, No. 2, pp. 718--732 • View Publication • BIB
Given a natural $n$, we construct a two-coloring of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the maximum metric satisfying the following. For any finite set of reals $S$ with diameter greater than $5^{n}$ such that the distance between any two consecutive points of $S$ does not exceed one, no isometric copy of $S$ is monochromatic. As a corollary, we prove that any normed space can be two-colored such that all sufficiently long unit arithmetic progressions contain points of both colors.

Proof of a conjecture of Batyrev and Juny on Gorenstein polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $d$-dimensional lattice polytope $P$ is Gorenstein if it has a multiple $r P$ that is a reflexive polytope up to translation by a lattice vector. The difference $d+1-r$ is called the degree of $P$. We show that a Gorenstein polytope is a lattice pyramid if its dimension is at least three times its degree. This was previously conjectured by Batyrev and Juny. We also present a refined conjecture and prove it for IDP Gorenstein polytopes.

Compatible split systems on a multiset
Published • View Publication • BIB
A split system on a multiset $\mathcal M$ is a set of bipartitions of $\mathcal M$. Such a split system $\mathfrak S$ is compatible if it can be represented by a tree in such a way that the vertices of the tree are labelled by the elements in $\mathcal M$, the removal of each edge in the tree yields a bipartition in $\mathfrak S$ by taking the labels of the two resulting components, and every bipartition in $\mathfrak S$ can be obtained from the tree in this way. In this contribution, we present a novel characterization for compatible split systems, and for split systems admitting a unique tree representation. In addition, we show that a conjecture on compatibility stated in 2008 holds for some large classes of split systems.

Multitriangulations and tropical Pfaffians
Published in SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry, 8(2) (2024), 302-332 • View Publication • BIB
The $k$-associahedron $Ass_k(n)$ is the simplicial complex of $(k+1)$-crossing-free subgraphs of the complete graph with vertices on a circle. Its facets are called $k$-triangulations. We explore the connection of $Ass_k(n)$ with the Pfaffian variety $Pf_k(n)\subset {\mathbb K}^{\binom{[n]}2}$ of antisymmetric matrices of rank $\le 2k$. First, we characterize the Gröbner cone $Grob_k(n)\subset{\mathbb R}^{\binom{[n]}2}$ producing as initial ideal of $I(Pf_k(n))$ the Stanley-Reisner ideal of $Ass_k(n)$ (that is, the monomial ideal generated by $(k+1)$-crossings). This implies that $k$-triangulations are bases in the algebraic matroid of $Pf_k(n)$, a matroid closely related to low-rank completion of antisymmetric matrices. We then look at the tropicalization of $Pf_k(n)$ and show that $Ass_k(n)$ embeds naturally as the intersection of $\operatorname{trop}(Pf_k(n))$ and $Grob_k(n)$, and is contained in the totally positive part $\operatorname{trop}^+( Pf_k(n))$ of it. We show that for $k=1$ and for each triangulation $T$ of the $n$-gon, the projection of this embedding of $Ass_k(n)$ to the $n-3$ coordinates corresponding to diagonals in $T$ gives a complete polytopal fan, realizing the associahedron. This fan is linearly isomorphic to the $\mathbf g$-vector fan of the cluster algebra of type $A$, shown to be polytopal by Hohlweg, Pilaud and Stella in (2018).

Uniform estimates for smooth polynomials over finite fields
We establish new estimates for the number of $m$-smooth polynomials of degree $n$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the main term involves the number of $m$-smooth permutations on $n$ elements. Our estimates imply that the probability that a random polynomial of degree $n$ is $m$-smooth is asymptotic to the probability that a random permutation on $n$ elements is $m$-smooth, uniformly for $m\ge (2+\varepsilon)\log_q n$ as $q^n \to \infty$. This should be viewed as an unconditional analogue of works of Hildebrand and of Saias in the integer setting, which assume the Riemann Hypothesis. Moreover, we show that the range $m \ge (2+\varepsilon)\log_q n$ is sharp; this should be viewed as a resolution of a (polynomial analogue of a) conjecture of Hildebrand. As an application of our estimates, we determine the rate of decay in the asymptotic formula for the expected degree of the largest prime factor of a random polynomial.

Complete combinatorial characterization of greedy-drawable trees
A (Euclidean) greedy drawing of a graph is a drawing in which, for any two vertices $s,t$ ($s \neq t$), there is a neighbor vertex of $s$ that is closer to $t$ than to $s$ in the Euclidean distance. Greedy drawings are important in the context of message routing in networks, and graph classes that admit greedy drawings have been actively studied. Nöllenburg and Prutkin (Discrete Comput. Geom., 58(3), pp.543-579, 2017) gave a characterization of greedy-drawable trees in terms of an inequality system that contains a non-linear equation. Using the characterization, they gave a linear-time recognition algorithm for greedy-drawable trees of maximum degree $\leq 4$. However, a combinatorial characterization of greedy-drawable trees of maximum degree 5 was left open. In this paper, we give a combinatorial characterization of greedy-drawable trees of maximum degree $5$, which leads to a complete combinatorial characterization of greedy-drawable trees. Furthermore, we give a characterization of greedy-drawable pseudo-trees.

Junta threshold for low degree Boolean functions on the slice

Deletion-Restriction for Logarithmic Forms on Multiarrangements
We consider the behaviour of logarithmic differential forms on arrangements and multiarrangements of hyperplanes under the operations of deletion and restriction, extending early work of Günter Ziegler. The restriction of logarithmic forms to a hyperplane may or may not be surjective, and we measure the failure of surjectivity in terms of commutative algebra of logarithmic forms and derivations. We find that the dual notion of restriction of logarithmic vector fields behaves similarly but inequivalently. A main result is that, if an arrangement is free, then any arrangement obtained by adding a hyperplane has the "dual strongly plus-one generated" property. One application is another proof of a main result of a paper by the first author characterizing when adding a hyperplane to a free arrangement remains free. A further application is to resolve two conjectures due to Ziegler, which we defer to a sequel.
Max Weight Independent Set in graphs with no long claws: An analog of the Gyárfás' path argument
Published • View Publication • BIB
We revisit recent developments for the Maximum Weight Independent Set problem in graphs excluding a subdivided claw $S_{t,t,t}$ as an induced subgraph [Chudnovsky, Pilipczuk, Pilipczuk, Thomassé, SODA 2020] and provide a subexponential-time algorithm with improved running time $2^{\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n}\log n)}$ and a quasipolynomial-time approximation scheme with improved running time $2^{\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-1} \log^{5} n)}$. The Gyárfás' path argument, a powerful tool that is the main building block for many algorithms in $P_t$-free graphs, ensures that given an $n$-vertex $P_t$-free graph, in polynomial time we can find a set $P$ of at most $t-1$ vertices, such that every connected component of $G-N[P]$ has at most $n/2$ vertices. Our main technical contribution is an analog of this result for $S_{t,t,t}$-free graphs: given an $n$-vertex $S_{t,t,t}$-free graph, in polynomial time we can find a set $P$ of $\mathcal{O}(t \log n)$ vertices and an extended strip decomposition (an appropriate analog of the decomposition into connected components) of $G-N[P]$ such that every particle (an appropriate analog of a connected component to recurse on) of the said extended strip decomposition has at most $n/2$ vertices.

Thanks to the amazing Apagodu-Zeilberger extension of the Almkvist-Zeilberger algorithm, adapted in this article for combinatorial applications, this 104492-digit number, can be computed in less than 33 seconds. But not just this particular number. Many other numbers that come up in enumerative combinatorics, can be computed just as efficiently
Minimal obstructions for polarity, monopolarity, unipolarity and $(s,1)$-polarity in generalizations of cographs
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is known that every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions when restricted to either the class of cographs or the class of $P_4$-reducible graphs. In this work, we prove that also when restricted to the classes of $P_4$-sparse graphs and $P_4$-extendible graphs (both of which extend $P_4$-reducible graphs) every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions. We present complete lists of $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-extendible minimal obstructions for polarity, monopolarity, unipolarity, and $(s,1)$-polarity, where $s$ is a positive integer. In parallel to the case of $P_4$-reducible graphs, all the $P_4$-sparse minimal obstructions for these hereditary properties are cographs.
