Percolation probability and critical exponents for site percolation on the UIPT
We derive three critical exponents for Bernoulli site percolation on the on the Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation (UIPT). First we compute explicitly the probability that the root cluster is infinite. As a consequence, we show that the off-critical exponent for site percolation on the UIPT is $β= 1/2$. Then we establish an integral formula for the generating function of the number of vertices in the root cluster. We use this formula to prove that, at criticality, the probability that the root cluster has at least $n$ vertices decays like $n^{-1/7}$. Finally, we also derive an expression for the law of the perimeter of the root cluster and use it to establish that, at criticality, the probability that the perimeter of the root cluster is equal to $n$ decays like $n^{-4/3}$. Among these three exponents, only the last one was previously known. Our main tools are the so-called gasket decomposition of percolation clusters, generic properties of random Boltzmann maps, as well as analytic combinatorics.

Geometric properties of spin clusters in random triangulations coupled with an Ising Model
We investigate the geometry of a typical spin cluster in random triangulations sampled with a probability proportional to the energy of an Ising configuration on their vertices, both in the finite and infinite volume settings. This model is known to undergo a combinatorial phase transition at an explicit critical temperature, for which its partition function has a different asymptotic behavior than uniform maps. The purpose of this work is to give geometric evidence of this phase transition. In the infinite volume setting, called the Infinite Ising Planar Triangulation, we exhibit a phase transition for the existence of an infinite spin cluster: for critical and supercritical temperatures, the root spin cluster is finite almost surely, while it is infinite with positive probability for subcritical temperatures. Remarkably, we are able to obtain an explicit parametric expression for this probability, which allows to prove that the percolation critical exponent is $β=1/4$. We also derive critical exponents for the tail distribution of the perimeter and of the volume of the root spin cluster, both in the finite and infinite volume settings. Finally, we establish the scaling limit of the interface of the root spin cluster seen as a looptree. In particular in the whole supercritical temperature regime, we prove that the critical exponents and the looptree limit are the same as for critical Bernoulli site percolation. Our proofs mix combinatorial and probabilistic arguments. The starting point is the gasket decomposition, which makes full use of the spatial Markov property of our model. This decomposition enables us to characterize the root spin cluster as a Boltzmann planar map in the finite volume setting. We then combine precise combinatorial results obtained through analytic combinatorics and universal features of Boltzmann maps to establish our results.

On maximum Wiener index of directed grids
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is devoted to Wiener index of directed graphs, more precisely of directed grids. The grid $G_{m,n}$ is the Cartesian product $P_m\Box P_n$ of paths on $m$ and $n$ vertices, and in a particular case when $m=2$, it is a called the ladder graph $L_n$. Kraner Šumenjak et al. proved that the maximum Wiener index of a digraph, which is obtained by orienting the edges of $L_n$, is obtained when all layers isomorphic to one factor are directed paths directed in the same way except one (corresponding to an endvertex of the other factor) which is a directed path directed in the opposite way. Then they conjectured that the natural generalization of this orientation to $G_{m,n}$ will attain the maximum Wiener index among all orientations of $G_{m,n}$. In this paper we disprove the conjecture by showing that a comb-like orientation of $G_{m,n}$ has significiantly bigger Wiener index.

Multiple DP-coloring of planar graphs without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
The concept of DP-coloring of a graph is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. Multiple DP-coloring of graphs, as a generalization of multiple list coloring, was first studied by Bernshteyn, Kostochka and Zhu in 2019. This paper proves that planar graphs without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles are $(7m, 2m)$-DP-colorable for every integer $m$. As a consequence, the strong fractional choice number of any planar graph without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles is at most $7/2$.
On the Effect of Data Dimensionality on Eigenvector Centrality
Graphs (i.e., networks) have become an integral tool for the representation and analysis of relational data. Advances in data gathering have lead to multi-relational data sets which exhibit greater depth and scope. In certain cases, this data can be modeled using a hypergraph. However, in practice analysts typically reduce the dimensionality of the data (whether consciously or otherwise) to accommodate a traditional graph model. In recent years spectral hypergraph theory has emerged to study the eigenpairs of the adjacency hypermatrix of a uniform hypergraph. We show how analyzing multi-relational data, via a hypermatrix associated to the aforementioned hypergraph, can lead to conclusions different from those when the data is projected down to its co-occurrence matrix. In particular, we provide an example of a uniform hypergraph where the most central vertex (à la eigencentrality) changes depending on the order of the associated matrix. To the best of our knowledge this is the first known hypergraph to exhibit this property.

Contacts in totally separable packings in the plane and in high dimensions
Published in Journal of Computational Geometry 13 (2022), 471--483 • View Publication • BIB
We study the contact structure of totally separable} packings of translates of a convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, that is, packings where any two touching bodies have a separating hyperplane that does not intersect the interior of any translate in the packing. The separable Hadwiger number $H_{\text{sep}}(K)$ of $K$ is defined to be the maximum number of translates touched by a single translate, with the maximum taken over all totally separable packings of translates of $K$. We show that for each $d\geq 8$, there exists a smooth and strictly convex $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $H_{\text{sep}}(K)>2d$, and asymptotically, $H_{\text{sep}}(K)=Ω\bigl((3/\sqrt{8})^d\bigr)$. We show that Alon's packing of Euclidean unit balls such that each translate touches at least $2^{\sqrt{d}}$ others whenever $d$ is a power of $4$, can be adapted to give a totally separable packing of translates of the $\ell_1$-unit ball with the same touching property. We also consider the maximum number of touching pairs in a totally separable packing of $n$ translates of any planar convex body $K$. We prove that the maximum equals $\lfloor 2n-2\sqrt{n}\rfloor$ if and only if $K$ is a quasi hexagon, thus completing the determination of this value for all planar convex bodies.
Graphs with $G^p$-connected medians
Published • View Publication • BIB
The median of a graph $G$ with weighted vertices is the set of all vertices $x$ minimizing the sum of weighted distances from $x$ to the vertices of $G$. For any integer $p\ge 2$, we characterize the graphs in which, with respect to any non-negative weights, median sets always induce connected subgraphs in the $p$th power $G^p$ of $G$. This extends some characterizations of graphs with connected medians (case $p=1$) provided by Bandelt and Chepoi (2002). The characteristic conditions can be tested in polynomial time for any $p$. We also show that several important classes of graphs in metric graph theory, including bridged graphs (and thus chordal graphs), graphs with convex balls, bucolic graphs, and bipartite absolute retracts, have $G^2$-connected medians. Extending the result of Bandelt and Chepoi that basis graphs of matroids are graphs with connected medians, we characterize the isometric subgraphs of Johnson graphs and of halved-cubes with connected medians.
From flip processes to dynamical systems on graphons

We introduce a class of random graph processes, which we call flip processes. Each such process is given by a rule which is a function $\mathcal{R}:\mathcal{H}_k\rightarrow \mathcal{H}_k$ from all labeled $k$-vertex graphs into itself ($k$ is fixed). The process starts with a given $n$-vertex graph $G_0$. In each step, the graph $G_i$ is obtained by sampling $k$ random vertices $v_1,\ldots,v_k$ of $G_{i-1}$ and replacing the induced graph $F:=G_{i-1}[v_1,\ldots,v_k]$ by $\mathcal{R}(F)$. This class contains several previously studied processes including the Erdős--Rényi random graph process and the triangle removal process. Actually, our definition of flip processes is more general, in that $\mathcal{R}(F)$ is a probability distribution on $\mathcal{H}_k$, thus allowing randomised replacements. Given a flip process with a rule $\mathcal{R}$, we construct time-indexed trajectories $Φ:\mathcal{W}_0\times [0,\infty)\rightarrow\mathcal{W}_0$ in the space of graphons. We prove that for any $T > 0$ starting with a large finite graph $G_0$ which is close to a graphon $W_0$ in the cut norm, with high probability the flip process will stay in a thin sausage around the trajectory $(Φ(W_0,t))_{t=0}^T$ (after rescaling the time by the square of the order of the graph). These graphon trajectories are then studied from the perspective of dynamical systems. Among others topics, we study continuity properties of these trajectories with respect to time and initial graphon, existence and stability of fixed points and speed of convergence (whenever the infinite time limit exists). We give an example of a flip process with a periodic trajectory.

Robust (rainbow) subdivisions and simplicial cycles
Published in Advances in Combinatorics 2024:1, 37pp • View Publication • BIB
We present several results in extremal graph and hypergraph theory of topological nature. First, we show that if $α>0$ and $\ell=Ω(\frac{1}α\log\frac{1}α)$ is an odd integer, then every graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and at least $n^{1+α}$ edges contains an $\ell$-subdivision of the complete graph $K_t$, where $t=n^{Θ(α)}$. Also, this remains true if in addition the edges of $G$ are properly colored, and one wants to find a rainbow copy of such a subdivision. In the sparser regime, we show that properly edge colored graphs on $n$ vertices with average degree $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ contain rainbow cycles, while average degree $(\log n)^{6+o(1)}$ guarantees rainbow subdivisions of $K_t$ for any fixed $t$, thus improving recent results of Janzer and Jiang et al., respectively. Furthermore, we consider certain topological notions of cycles in pure simplicial complexes (uniform hypergraphs). We show that if $G$ is a $2$-dimensional pure simplicial complex ($3$-graph) with $n$ $1$-dimensional and at least $n^{1+α}$ 2-dimensional faces, then $G$ contains a triangulation of the cylinder and the Möbius strip with $O(\frac{1}α\log\frac{1}α)$ vertices. We present generalizations of this for higher dimensional pure simplicial complexes as well. In order to prove these results, we consider certain (properly edge colored) graphs and hypergraphs $G$ with strong expansion. We argue that if one randomly samples the vertices (and colors) of $G$ with not too small probability, then many pairs of vertices are connected by a short path whose vertices (and colors) are from the sampled set, with high probability.

Isomorphism testing of $k$-spanning tournaments is Fixed Parameter Tractable
Published • View Publication • BIB
An arc-colored tournament is said to be $k$-spanning for an integer $k\geq 1$ if the union of its arc-color classes of maximal valency at most $k$ is the arc set of a strongly connected digraph. It is proved that isomorphism testing of $k$-spanning tournaments is fixed-parameter tractable.

(Hurwitz-)Brill-Noether general marked graphs via the Demazure product
This paper gives a novel and compact proof that a metric graph consisting of a chain of loops of torsion order $0$ is Brill-Noether general (a theorem of Cools-Draisma-Payne-Robeva), and a finite or metric graph consisting of a chain of loops of torsion order $k$ is Hurwitz-Brill-Noether general in the sense of splitting loci (a theorem of Cook-Powell-Jensen). In fact, we prove a generalization to (metric) graphs with two marked points, that behaves well under vertex gluing. The key construction is a way to associate permutations to divisors on twice-marked graphs, simultaneously encoding the ranks of every twist of the divisor by the marked points. Vertex gluing corresponds to the Demazure product, which can be formulated via tropical matrix multiplication.

The odd chromatic number of a planar graph is at most 8
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics 39 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
Petruševski and Škrekovski \cite{odd9} recently introduced the notion of an odd colouring of a graph: a proper vertex colouring of a graph $G$ is said to be \emph{odd} if for each non-isolated vertex $x \in V(G)$ there exists a colour $c$ appearing an odd number of times in $N(x)$. Petruševski and Škrekovski proved that for any planar graph $G$ there is an odd colouring using at most $9$ colours and, together with Caro \cite{oddremarks}, showed that $8$ colours are enough for a significant family of planar graphs. We show that $8$ colours suffice for all planar graphs.
Zykov sums of digraphs with diachromatic number equal to their harmonious number
Published in Discrete Mathematics Letters-2024 • View Publication • BIB
The dichromatic number and the diachromatic number are generalizations of the chromatic number and the achromatic number for digraphs considering acyclic colorings. In this paper, we determine the diachromatic number of digraphs arising from the Zykov sum of digraphs that admit a complete $k$-coloring with $k=\tfrac{1+\sqrt{1+4m}}{2}$ for a suitable $m$. Consequently, the diachromatic number equals the harmonious number for every digraph in this family. In particular, we study the chromatic number, the diachromatic number, and the harmonious chromatic number of the Zykov sum of cycles.

An asymptotic approach to Borwein-type sign pattern theorems
The celebrated (First) Borwein Conjecture predicts that for all positive integers~$n$ the sign pattern of the coefficients of the ``Borwein polynomial'' $$(1-q)(1-q^2)(1-q^4)(1-q^5) \cdots(1-q^{3n-2})(1-q^{3n-1})$$ is $+--+--\cdots$. It was proved by the first author in [Adv. Math. 394 (2022), Paper No. 108028]. In the present paper, we extract the essentials from the former paper and enhance them to a conceptual approach for the proof of ``Borwein-like'' sign pattern statements. In particular, we provide a new proof of the original (First) Borwein Conjecture, a proof of the Second Borwein Conjecture (predicting that the sign pattern of the square of the ``Borwein polynomial'' is also $+--+--\cdots$), and a partial proof of a ``cubic'' Borwein Conjecture due to the first author (predicting the same sign pattern for the cube of the ``Borwein polynomial''). Many further applications are discussed.

Combinatorial Aspects of the Card Game War
This paper studies a single-suit version of the card game War on a finite deck of cards. There are varying methods of how players put the cards that they win back into their hands, but we primarily consider randomly putting the cards back and deterministically always putting the winning card before the losing card. The concept of a \emph{passthrough} is defined, which refers to a player playing through all cards in their hand from a particular point in the game. We consider games in which the second player wins during their first passthrough. We introduce several combinatorial objects related to the game: game graphs, win-loss sequences, win-loss binary trees, and game posets. We show how these objects relate to each other. We enumerate states depending on the number of rounds and the number of passthroughs.

Vexillary Grothendieck Polynomials via Bumpless Pipe Dreams
Recent work of Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt proved a formula for the degree of any Grothendieck polynomial. A distinct formula for the degree of vexillary Grothendieck polynomials was proven by Rajchgot, Robichaux, and Weigandt. We give a new proof of Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt's formula in the special case of vexillary permutations and characterize the set of bumpless pipe dreams which contribute maximal degree terms to the Grothendieck polynomial in this case. Furthermore, we use this characterization to draw connections between the Pechenik-Speyer-Weigandt and Rajchgot-Robichaux-Weigandt formulas. We also use bumpless pipe dreams to prove new results about the support of vexillary Grothendieck polynomials, addressing special cases of conjectures of Mészáros, Setiabrata, and St. Dizier.
Ehrhart Theory of Paving and Panhandle Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the base polytope $P_M$ of any paving matroid $M$ can be systematically obtained from a hypersimplex by slicing off certain subpolytopes, namely base polytopes of lattice path matroids corresponding to panhandle-shaped Ferrers diagrams. We calculate the Ehrhart polynomials of these matroids and consequently write down the Ehrhart polynomial of $P_M$, starting with Katzman's formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of a hypersimplex. The method builds on and generalizes Ferroni's work on sparse paving matroids. Combinatorially, our construction corresponds to constructing a uniform matroid from a paving matroid by iterating the operation of stressed-hyperplane relaxation introduced by Ferroni, Nasr, and Vecchi, which generalizes the standard matroid-theoretic notion of circuit-hyperplane relaxation. We present evidence that panhandle matroids are Ehrhart positive and describe a conjectured combinatorial formula involving chain forests and Eulerian numbers from which Ehrhart positivity of panhandle matroids will follow. As an application of the main result, we calculate the Ehrhart polynomials of matroids associated with Steiner systems and finite projective planes, and show that they depend only on their design-theoretic parameters: for example, while projective planes of the same order need not have isomorphic matroids, their base polytopes must be Ehrhart equivalent.

Bonds intersecting long paths in $k$-connected graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well-known question of Gallai (1966) asked whether there is a vertex which passes through all longest paths of a connected graph. Although this has been verified for some special classes of graphs such as outerplanar graphs, circular arc graphs, and series-parallel graphs, the answer is negative for general graphs. In this paper, we prove among other results that if we replace the vertex by a bond, then the answer is affirmative. A bond of a graph is a minimal nonempty edge-cut. In particular, in any 2-connected graph, the set of all edges incident to a vertex is a bond, called a vertex-bond. Clearly, for a 2-connected graph, a path passes through a vertex $v$ if and only if it meets the vertex-bond with respect to $v$. Therefore, a very natural approach to Gallai's question is to study whether there is a bond meeting all longest paths. Let $p$ denote the length of a longest path of connected graphs. We show that for any 2-connected graph, there is a bond meeting all paths of length at least $p-1$. We then prove that for any 3-connected graph, there is a bond meeting all paths of length at least $p-2$. For a $k$-connected graph $(k\ge3)$, we show that there is a bond meeting all paths of length at least $p-t+1$, where $t=\Big\lfloor\sqrt{\frac{k-2}{2}}\Big\rfloor$ if $p$ is even and $t=\Big\lceil\sqrt{\frac{k-2}{2}}\Big\rceil$ if $p$ is odd. Our results provide analogs of the corresponding results of P. Wu and S. McGuinness [Bonds intersecting cycles in a graph, Combinatorica 25 (4) (2005), 439-450] also.

Linearity of Free Resolutions of Monomial Ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study monomial ideals with linear presentation or partially linear resolution. We give combinatorial characterizations of linear presentation for square-free ideals of degree 3, and for primary ideals whose resolutions are linear except for the last step (the "almost linear" case). We also give sharp bounds on Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and numbers of generators in some cases. It is a basic observation that linearity properties are inherited by the restriction of an ideal to a subset of variables, and we study when the converse holds. We construct fractal examples of almost linear primary ideals with relatively few generators related to the Sierpiński triangle. Our results also lead to classes of highly connected simplicial complexes $Δ$ that can not be extended to the complete $\dim Δ$-skeleton of the simplex on the same variables by shelling.

On a conjecture of Graham on the p-divisibility of central binomial coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that for every $r \geq 1$, and all $r$ distinct (sufficiently large) primes $p_1,..., p_r > p_0(r)$, there exist infinitely many integers $n$ such that ${2n \choose n}$ is divisible by these primes to only low multiplicity. From a theorem of Kummer, an upper bound for the number of times that a prime $p_j$ can divide ${2n \choose n}$ is $1+\log n / \log p_j$; and our theorem shows that for every $\varepsilon > 0$, $r \geq 1$, and any sufficiently large primes $p_1,...,p_r > p_0(\varepsilon,r)$, we can find integers $n$ where for $j=1,...,r$, $p_j$ divides ${2n \choose n}$ with multiplicity at most $\varepsilon \log n/\log p_j$. We connect this result to a famous conjecture by R. L. Graham on whether there are infinitely many integers $n$ such that ${2n \choose n}$ is coprime to $105$.
