Bipartite-ness under smooth conditions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs, the {\it Zarankiewicz number} $z(m,n,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $m$ by $n$ bipartite graph $G$ that does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph (such $G$ is called {\it $\mathcal{F}$-free}). For $1\leq β<α<2$, a family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs is $(α,β)$-{\it smooth} if for some $ρ>0$ and every $m\leq n$, $z(m,n,\mathcal{F})=ρm n^{α-1}+O(n^β)$. Motivated by their work on a conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits on compactness and a classic result of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós, in \cite{AKSV} Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte proved that for any $(α,β)$-smooth family $\mathcal{F}$, there exists $k_0$ such that for all odd $k\geq k_0$ and sufficiently large $n$, any $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}\cup\{C_k\}$-free graph with minimum degree at least $ρ(\frac{2n}{5}+o(n))^{α-1}$ is bipartite. In this paper, we strengthen their result by showing that for every real $δ>0$, there exists $k_0$ such that for all odd $k\geq k_0$ and sufficiently large $n$, any $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}\cup\{C_k\}$-free graph with minimum degree at least $δn^{α-1}$ is bipartite. Furthermore, our result holds under a more relaxed notion of smoothness, which include the families $\mathcal{F}$ consisting of the single graph $K_{s,t}$ when $t\gg s$. We also prove an analogous result for $C_{2\ell}$-free graphs for every $\ell\geq 2$, which complements a result of Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte in \cite{KSV}.

Forest formulas of discrete Green's functions
Published in Journal of Graph Theory 102 (2023), 556-577 • View Publication • BIB
The discrete Green's functions are the pseudoinverse (or the inverse) of the Laplacian (or its variations) of a graph. In this paper, we will give combinatorial interpretations of Green's functions in terms of enumerating trees and forests in a graph that will be used to derive further formulas for several graph invariants. For example, we show that the trace of the Green's function $\mathbf{G}$ associated with the combinatorial Laplacian of a connected simple graph $Γ$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $\text{Tr}(\mathbf{G})=\sum_{λ_i \neq 0} \frac 1 {λ_i}= \frac{1}{nτ}|\mathbb{F}^*_2|$, where $λ_i$ denotes the eigenvalues of the combinatorial Laplacian, $τ$ denotes the number of spanning trees and $\mathbb{F}^*_2$ denotes the set of rooted spanning $2$-forests in $Γ$. We will prove forest formulas for discrete Green's functions for directed and weighted graphs and apply them to study random walks on graphs and digraphs. We derive a forest expression of the hitting time for digraphs, which gives combinatorial proofs to old and new results about hitting times, traces of discrete Green's functions, and other related quantities.
Entanglement Breaking Channels, Stochastic Matrices, and Primitivity
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications (2021), pages = {219-231}, year = {2021}, issn = {0024-3795}, • View Publication • BIB
We consider the important class of quantum operations (completely positive trace-preserving maps) called entanglement breaking channels. We show how every such channel induces stochastic matrix representations that have the same non-zero spectrum as the channel. We then use this to investigate when entanglement breaking channels are primitive, and prove this depends on primitivity of the matrix representations. This in turn leads to tight bounds on the primitivity index of entanglement breaking channels in terms of the primitivity index of the associated stochastic matrices. We also present examples and discuss open problems generated by the work.

On a huge family of non-schurian Schur rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
In his famous monograph on permutation groups, H.~Wielandt gives an example of a Schur ring over an elementary abelian group of order $p^2$ ($p>3$ is a prime), which is non-schurian, that is, it is the transitivity module of no permutation group. Generalizing this example, we construct a huge family of non-schurian Schur rings over elementary abelian groups of even rank.

Coordinating drones with mothership vehicles: The mothership and multiple drones routing problem with Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper considers the optimization problems that arise to coordinate a tandem between a mothership vehicle and a fleet of drones. %more than one drone. Each drone can be launched from the mothership to perform an operation. After completing the operations the drones return to the mothership to recharge batteries and to be ready for a new operation. Operations consist on (partially) visiting graphs with given lengths to deliver some service or to perform some surveillance/inspection activity. The goal is to minimize the overall weighted distance traveled by the mothership while satisfying some requirements in terms of percentages of visits to the target graphs. In all cases, we develop exact formulations resorting to mixed integer second order cone programs that are compared on a testbed of instances to assess their performance. We also develop a matheuristic algorithm that provides reasonable solutions. Computational experiments show the usefulness of our methods in different scenarios.

Odd and even $q$-type Lidstone polynomial sequences
In this paper, we introduce two types of general classes of even and odd $q$-Lidstone polynomial sequences. We prove essential properties related to them like the matrix and determinate form representation, the generating function, recurrence relation, and conjugate sequences. Some illustrative examples are included.

Topology of univoque sets in real base expansions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a positive integer $M$ and a real number $q \in (1,M+1]$, an expansion of a real number $x \in \left[0,M/(q-1)\right]$ over the alphabet $A=\{0,1,\ldots,M\}$ is a sequence $(c_i) \in A^{\mathbb N}$ such that $x=\sum_{i=1}^{\infty}c_iq^{-i}$. Generalizing many earlier results, we investigate in this paper the topological properties of the set $U_q$ consisting of numbers $x$ having a unique expansion of this form, and the combinatorial properties of the set $U_q'$ consisting of their corresponding expansions. We also provide shorter proofs of the main results of Baker in [B] by adapting the method given in [EJK] for the case $M=1$.

Problems in the Enumeration of Tilings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Enumeration of tilings is the mathematical study concerning the total number of coverings of regions by similar pieces without gaps or overlaps. Enumeration of tilings has become a vibrant subfield of combinatorics with connections and applications to diverse mathematical areas. In 1999, James Propp published his well-known list of 32 open problems in the field. The list has got much attention from experts around the world. After two decades, most of the problems on the list have been solved and generalized. In this paper, we propose a set of new tiling problems. This survey paper contributes to the Open Problems in Algebraic Combinatorics 2022 conference (OPAC 2022) at the University of Minnesota.

On the Left Connected Subalgebra of the Descent Algebra of a Coxeter Group of Classical Type
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Coxeter group of classical type $A_n$, $B_n$ or $D_n$ contains a chain of subgroups of the same type. We show that intersections of conjugates of these subgroups are again of the same type, and make precise in which sense and to what extent this property is exclusive to the classical types of Coxeter groups. As the main tool for the proof we use Solomon's descent algebra. Using Stirling numbers, we express certain basis elements of the descent algebra as polynomials and derive explicit multiplication formulas for a commutative subalgebra of the descent algebra.

$b$-monotone Hurwitz numbers: Virasoro constraints, BKP hierarchy, and $O(N)$-BGW integral
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2023, Issue 14, July 2023, Pages 12172-12230 • View Publication • BIB
We study a $b$-deformation of monotone Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We give an evolution equation for this model and derive from it Virasoro constraints, thereby proving a conjecture of Féray on Jack characters. A combinatorial model of non-oriented monotone Hurwitz maps which generalizes monotone transposition factorizations is provided. In the case $b=1$ we obtain an explicit Schur expansion of the model and show that it obeys the BKP integrable hierarchy. This Schur expansion also proves a conjecture of Oliveira--Novaes relating zonal polynomials with irreducible representations of $O(N)$. We also relate the model to an $O(N)$ version of the Brézin--Gross--Witten integral, which we solve explicitly in terms of Pfaffians in the case of even multiplicities.

Extremal problems of double stars
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 24, no 2, Graph Theory (April 20, 2023) dmtcs:8499 • View Publication • BIB
In a generalized Turán problem, two graphs $H$ and $F$ are given and the question is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph of order $n$. In this paper, we study the number of double stars $S_{k,l}$ in triangle-free graphs. We also study an opposite version of this question: what is the maximum number edges/triangles in graphs with double star type restrictions, which leads us to study two questions related to the extremal number of triangles or edges in graphs with degree-sum constraints over adjacent or non-adjacent vertices.

Existence of small ordered orthogonal arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that there exist ordered orthogonal arrays, whose sizes deviate from the Rao bound by a factor that is polynomial in the parameters of the ordered orthogonal array. The proof is nonconstructive and based on a probabilistic method due to Kuperberg, Lovett and Peled.

The double-bubble problem on the square lattice
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate minimal-perimeter configurations of two finite sets of points on the square lattice. This corresponds to a lattice version of the classical double-bubble problem. We give a detailed description of the fine geometry of minimisers and, in some parameter regime, we compute the optimal perimeter as a function of the size of the point sets. Moreover, we provide a sharp bound on the difference between two minimisers, which are generally not unique, and use it to rigorously identify their Wulff shape, as the size of the point sets scales up.
Enumerating $k$-Naples Parking Functions Through Catalan Objects
This paper studies a generalization of parking functions named $k$-Naples parking functions, where backward movement is allowed. One consequence of backward movement is that the number of ascending $k$-Naples is not the same as the number of descending $k$-Naples. This paper focuses on generalizing the bijections of ascending parking functions with combinatorial objects enumerated by the Catalan numbers in the setting of both ascending and descending $k$-Naples parking functions. These combinatorial objects include Dyck paths, binary trees, triangulations of polygons, and non-crossing partitions. Using these bijections, we enumerate both ascending and descending $k$-Naples parking functions.

The Muirhead-Rado inequality, 1 Vector majorization and the permutohedron
Published in in: Combinatorial and Additive Number Theory VI, Springer, New York, 2025, pages 319--346 • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbf{a}$ and $\mathbf{b}$ be vectors in $\mathbf{R}^n$ with nonnegative coordinates. Permuting the coordinates, we can assume that $a_1 \geq \cdots \geq a_n$ and $b_1 \geq \cdots \geq b_n$. The vector $\mathbf{a}$ majorizes the vector $\mathbf{b}$, denoted $\mathbf{b} \preceq \mathbf{a}$, if $\sum_{i=1}^n b_i = \sum_{i=1}^n a_i$ and $\sum_{i=1}^k b_i \leq \sum_{i=1}^k a_i$ for all $k \in \{1,\ldots,n-1\}$. This paper proves theorems of Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya and Rado that $\mathbf{b} \preceq \mathbf{a}$ if and only if $P\mathbf{a} = \mathbf{b}$ for some doubly stochastic matrix $P$ if and only if $\mathbf{b}$ is in the $S_n$-permutohedron generated by $\mathbf{a}$.

Regular polytopes, sphere packings and Apollonian sections
Published in Geometriae Dedicata 218, 105 (2024) • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we explore the geometry and the arithmetic of a family of polytopal sphere packings induced by regular polytopes in any dimension. We prove that every integral polytope is crystallographic, and we show that there are 11 crystallographic regular polytopes in any dimension. After introducing the notion of Apollonian section, we determine which Platonic crystallographic packings emerge as cross-sections of the Apollonian arrangements of the regular 4-polytopes. Additionally, we compute the Möbius spectrum of every regular polytope.

Ramsey Numbers of Trails
Published • View Publication • BIB
We initiate the study of Ramsey numbers of trails. Let $k \geq 2$ be a positive integer. The Ramsey number of trails with $k$ vertices is defined as the the smallest number $n$ such that for every graph $H$ with $n$ vertices, $H$ or the complete $\overline{H}$ contains a trail with $k$ vertices. We prove that the Ramsey number of trails with $k$ vertices is at most $k$ and at least $2\sqrt{k}+Θ(1)$. This improves the trivial upper bound of $\lfloor 3k/2\rfloor -1$.

On the chromatic number in the stochastic block model
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a generalisation of Bollobás' classical result on the asymptotics of the chromatic number of the binomial random graph to the stochastic block model. In addition, by allowing the number of blocks to grow, we determine the chromatic number in the Chung-Lu model. Our approach is based on the estimates for the weighted independence number, where weights are specifically designed to encapsulate inhomogeneities of the random graph.

Hankel Determinants of Certain Sequences Of Bernoulli Polynomials: A Direct Proof of an Inverse Matrix Entry from Statistics
Published • View Publication • BIB
We calculate the Hankel determinants of sequences of Bernoulli polynomials. This corresponding Hankel matrix comes from statistically estimating the variance in nonparametric regression. Besides its entries' natural and deep connection with Bernoulli polynomials, a special case of the matrix can be constructed from a corresponding Vandermonde matrix. As a result, instead of asymptotic analysis, we give a direct proof of calculating an entry of its inverse.
