Linear $k$-Chord Diagrams
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 23 (2020), Article 20.9.1 • Search Publication
We generalize the notion of linear chord diagrams to the case of matched sets of size $k$, which we call $k$-chord diagrams. We provide formal generating functions and recurrence relations enumerating these $k$-chord diagrams by the number of short chords, where the latter is defined as all members of the matched set being adjacent, and is the generalization of a short chord or loop in a linear chord diagram. We also enumerate $k$-chord diagrams by the number of connected components built from short chords and provide the associated generating functions in this case. We show that the distributions of short chords and connected components are asymptotically Poisson, and provide the associated means. Finally, we provide recurrence relations enumerating non-crossing $k$-chord diagrams by the number of short chords, generalising the Narayana numbers, and establish asymptotic normality, providing the associated means and variances. Applications to generalized games of memory are also discussed.

Note on semi-proper orientations of outerplanar graphs
A semi-proper orientation of a given graph $G$, denoted by $(D,w)$, is an orientation $D$ with a weight function $w: A(D)\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_+$, such that the in-weight of any adjacent vertices are distinct, where the in-weight of $v$ in $D$, denoted by $w^-_D(v)$, is the sum of the weights of arcs towards $v$. The semi-proper orientation number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\overrightarrowχ_s(G)$, is the minimum of maximum in-weight of $v$ in $D$ over all semi-proper orientation $(D,w)$ of $G$. This parameter was first introduced by Dehghan (2019). When the weights of all edges eqaul to one, this parameter is equal to the proper orientation number of $G$. The optimal semi-proper orientation is a semi-proper orientation $(D,w)$ such that $\max_{v\in V(G)}w_D^-(v)=\overrightarrowχ_s(G)$. Araújo et al. (2016) showed that $\overrightarrowχ(G)\le 7$ for every cactus $G$ and the bound is tight. We prove that for every cactus $G$, $\overrightarrowχ_s(G) \le 3$ and the bound is tight. Araújo et al. (2015) asked whether there is a constant $c$ such that $\overrightarrowχ(G)\le c$ for all outerplanar graphs $G.$ While this problem remains open, we consider it in the weighted case. We prove that for every outerplanar graph $G,$ $\overrightarrowχ_s(G)\le 4$ and the bound is tight.
Higher rank motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of $\mathbb{A}^3$ via wall-crossing, and asymptotics
Published • View Publication • BIB
We compute, via motivic wall-crossing, the generating function of virtual motives of the Quot scheme of points on $\mathbb{A}^3$, generalising to higher rank a result of Behrend, Bryan and Szendrői. We show that this motivic partition function converges to a Gaussian distribution, extending a result of Morrison.

Classification of optimal quaternary Hermitian LCD codes of dimension $2$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hermitian linear complementary dual codes are linear codes whose intersection with their Hermitian dual code is trivial. The largest minimum weight among quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes of dimension $2$ is known for each length. We give the complete classification of optimal quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes of dimension $2$.

Large Deviation Principles via Spherical Integrals
Published in Prob. Math. Phys. 3 (2022) 543-625 • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we develop a framework to study the large deviation principle for matrix models and their quantized versions, by tilting the measures using the limits of spherical integrals obtained in [46,47]. As examples, we obtain 1. a large deviation principle for the empirical distribution of the diagonal entries of $UB_NU^*$, for a sequence of $N\times N$ diagonal matrices $B_N$ and unitary Haar distributed matrices $U$; 2. a large deviation upper bound for the empirical eigenvalue distribution of $A_N+UB_NU^*$, for two sequences of $N\times N$ diagonal matrices $A_N, B_N$, and their complementary lower bounds at measures which are described by the free product with amalgamation; 3. a large deviation principle for the Kostka number $K_{\boldsymbolλ_N \boldsymbolη_N}$, for two sequences of partitions $\boldsymbolλ_N, \boldsymbolη_N$ with at most $N$ rows; 4. a large deviation upper bound for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c_{\boldsymbolλ_N \boldsymbol η_N}^{\boldsymbol κ_N}$, for three sequences of partitions $\boldsymbolλ_N, \boldsymbol η_N, \boldsymbol κ_N$ with at most $N$ rows, and their complementary lower bounds at nice measures.
Complete Edge-Colored Permutation Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the concept of complete edge-colored permutation graphs as complete graphs that are the edge-disjoint union of "classical" permutation graphs. We show that a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a complete edge-colored permutation graph if and only if each monochromatic subgraph of $G$ is a "classical" permutation graph and $G$ does not contain a triangle with~$3$ different colors. Using the modular decomposition as a framework we demonstrate that complete edge-colored permutation graphs are characterized in terms of their strong prime modules, which induce also complete edge-colored permutation graphs. This leads to an $\mathcal{O}(|V|^2)$-time recognition algorithm. We show, moreover, that complete edge-colored permutation graphs form a superclass of so-called symbolic ultrametrics and that the coloring of such graphs is always a Gallai coloring.

Latin Hypercubes and Cellular Automata
Published • View Publication • BIB
Latin squares and hypercubes are combinatorial designs with several applications in statistics, cryptography and coding theory. In this paper, we generalize a construction of Latin squares based on bipermutive cellular automata (CA) to the case of Latin hypercubes of dimension $k>2$. In particular, we prove that linear bipermutive CA (LBCA) yielding Latin hypercubes of dimension $k>2$ are defined by sequences of invertible Toeplitz matrices with partially overlapping coefficients, which can be described by a specific kind of regular de Bruijn graph induced by the support of the determinant function. Further, we derive the number of $k$-dimensional Latin hypercubes generated by LBCA by counting the number of paths of length $k-3$ on this de Bruijn graph.

Turán and Ramsey-type results for unavoidable subgraphs
We study Turán and Ramsey-type problems on edge-colored graphs. An edge-colored graph is called {\em $\varepsilon$-balanced} if each color class contains at least an $\varepsilon$-proportion of its edges. Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of edge-colored graphs, the Ramsey function $R(\varepsilon, \mathcal{F})$ is the smallest $n$ for which any $\varepsilon$-balanced $K_n$ must contain a copy of an $F\in\mathcal{F}$, and the Turán function $\mathrm{ex}(\varepsilon, n, \mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\varepsilon$-balanced graph which avoids all of $\mathcal{F}$. In this paper, we consider this Turán function for several classes of edge-colored graphs, we show that the Ramsey function is linear for bounded degree graphs, and we prove a theorem that gives a relationship between the two parameters.
An algorithmic framework for colouring locally sparse graphs
We develop an algorithmic framework for graph colouring that reduces the problem to verifying a local probabilistic property of the independent sets. With this we give, for any fixed $k\ge 3$ and $\varepsilon>0$, a randomised polynomial-time algorithm for colouring graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ in which each vertex is contained in at most $t$ copies of a cycle of length $k$, where $1/2\le t\le Δ^\frac{2\varepsilon}{1+2\varepsilon}/(\logΔ)^2$, with $\lfloor(1+\varepsilon)Δ/\log(Δ/\sqrt t)\rfloor$ colours. This generalises and improves upon several notable results including those of Kim (1995) and Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov (1999), and more recent ones of Molloy (2019) and Achlioptas, Iliopoulos and Sinclair (2019). This bound on the chromatic number is tight up to an asymptotic factor $2$ and it coincides with a famous algorithmic barrier to colouring random graphs.

On minimal degree of transitive permutation groups with stabiliser being a $2$-group
The minimal degree of a permutation group $G$ is defined as the minimal number of non-fixed points of a non-trivial element of $G$. In this paper we show that if $G$ is a transitive permutation group of degree $n$ having no non-trivial normal $2$-subgroups such that the stabiliser of a point is a $2$-group, then the minimal degree of $G$ is at least $\frac{2}{3}n$. The proof depends on the classification of finite simple groups.

Enumerating minimal dominating sets in the (in)comparability graphs of bounded dimension posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Enumerating minimal transversals in a hypergraph is a notoriously hard problem. It can be reduced to enumerating minimal dominating sets in a graph, in fact even to enumerating minimal dominating sets in an incomparability graph. We provide an output-polynomial time algorithm for incomparability graphs whose underlying posets have bounded dimension. Through a different proof technique, we also provide an output-polynomial algorithm for their complements, i.e., for comparability graphs of bounded dimension posets. Our algorithm for incomparability graphs is based on flashlight search and relies on the geometrical representation of incomparability graphs with bounded dimension, as given by Golumbic et al. in 1983. It runs with polynomial delay and only needs polynomial space. Our algorithm for comparability graphs is based on the flipping method introduced by Golovach et al. in 2015. It performs in incremental-polynomial time and requires exponential space. In addition, we show how to improve the flipping method so that it requires only polynomial space. Since the flipping method is a key tool for the best known algorithms enumerating minimal dominating sets in a number of graph classes, this yields direct improvements on the state of the art.

Slightly Improved Upper Bound on the Integrality Ratio for the $s-t$ Path TSP

In this paper we investigate the integrality ratio of the standard LP relaxation for the metric $s-t$ Path TSP. We make a near-optimal choice for an auxiliary function used in the analysis of Traub and Vygen which leads to an improved upper bound on the integrality ratio of 1.5273.

Sets in $\mathbb{Z}^k$ with doubling $2^k+δ$ are near convex progressions
For $δ>0$ sufficiently small and $A\subset \mathbb{Z}^k$ with $|A+A|\le (2^k+δ)|A|$, we show either $A$ is covered by $m_k(δ)$ parallel hyperplanes, or satisfies $|\widehat{\operatorname{co}}(A)\setminus A|\le c_kδ|A|$, where $\widehat{\operatorname{co}}(A)$ is the smallest convex progression (convex set intersected with a sublattice) containing $A$. This generalizes the Freiman-Bilu $2^k$ theorem, Freiman's $3|A|-4$ theorem, and recent sharp stability results of the present authors for sumsets in $\mathbb{R}^k$ conjectured by Figalli and Jerison.
Hopf monoids of ordered simplicial complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study ordered matroids and generalized permutohedra from a Hopf theoretic point of view. Our main object is a Hopf monoid in the vector species of extended generalized permutahedra equipped with an order of the coordinates; this monoid extends the Hopf monoid of generalized permutahedra studied by Aguiar and Ardila. Our formula for the antipode is cancellation-free and multiplicity-free, and is supported only on terms that are compatible with the local geometry of the polyhedron. Our result is part of a larger program to understand orderings on ground sets of simplicial complexes (for instance, on shifted and matroid independence complexes). In this vein, we show that shifted simplicial complexes and broken circuit complexes generate Hopf monoids that are expected to exhibit similar behavior.
Polyhedra, lattice structures, and extensions of semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
For an arbitrary rational polyhedron we consider its decompositions into Minkowski summands and, dual to this, the free extensions of the associated pair of semigroups. Being free for the pair of semigroups is equivalent to flatness for the corresponding algebras. Our main result is phrased in this dual setup: the category of free extensions always contains an initial object, which we describe explicitly. These objects seem to be related to unique liftings in log geometry. Further motivation comes from the deformation theory of the associated toric singularity.

Optimal protocols for the most difficult repeated coordination games
This paper investigates repeated win-lose coordination games (WLC-games). We analyse which protocols are optimal for these games covering both the worst case and average case scenarios, i,e., optimizing the guaranteed and expected coordination times. We begin by analysing Choice Matching Games (CM-games) which are a simple yet fundamental type of WLC-games, where the goal of the players is to pick the same choice from a finite set of initially indistinguishable choices. We give a complete classification of optimal expected and guaranteed coordination times in two-player CM-games and show that the corresponding optimal protocols are unique in every case - except in the CM-game with four choices, which we analyse separately. Our results on CM-games are also essential for proving a more general result on the difficulty of all WLC-games: we provide a complete analysis of least upper bounds for optimal expected coordination times in all two-player WLC-games as a function of game size. We also show that CM-games can be seen as the most difficult games among all two-player WLC-games, as they turn out to have the greatest optimal expected coordination times.

Continuously many bounded displacement non-equivalences in substitution tiling spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider substitution tilings in R^d that give rise to point sets that are not bounded displacement (BD) equivalent to a lattice and study the cardinality of BD(X), the set of distinct BD class representatives in the corresponding tiling space X. We prove a sufficient condition under which the tiling space contains continuously many distinct BD classes and present such an example in the plane. In particular, we show here for the first time that this cardinality can be greater than one.
Hierarchical and Modularly-Minimal Vertex Colorings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Cographs are exactly the hereditarily well-colored graphs, i.e., the graphs for which a greedy vertex coloring of every induced subgraph uses only the minimally necessary number of colors $χ(G)$. We show that greedy colorings are a special case of the more general hierarchical vertex colorings, which recently were introduced in phylogenetic combinatorics. Replacing cotrees by modular decomposition trees generalizes the concept of hierarchical colorings to arbitrary graphs. We show that every graph has a modularly-minimal coloring $σ$ satisfying $|σ(M)|=χ(M)$ for every strong module $M$ of $G$. This, in particular, shows that modularly-minimal colorings provide a useful device to design efficient coloring algorithms for certain hereditary graph classes. For cographs, the hierarchical colorings coincide with the modularly-minimal coloring. As a by-product, we obtain a simple linear-time algorithm to compute a modularly-minimal coloring of $P_4$-sparse graphs.

We examine a recursive sequence in which $s_n$ is a literal description of what the binary expansion of the previous term $s_{n-1}$ is not. By adapting a technique of Conway, we determine limiting behaviour of $\{s_n\}$ and dynamics of a related self-map of $2^{\mathbb{N}}$. Our main result is the existence and uniqueness of a pair of binary sequences, each the compliment-description of the other. We also take every opportunity to make puns.
