Good sequencings for small directed triple systems
A directed triple system of order $v$ (or, DTS$(v)$) is a decomposition of the complete directed graph $\vec{K_v}$ into transitive triples. An $\ell$-good sequencing of a DTS$(v)$ is a permutation of the points of the design, say $[x_1 \; \cdots \; x_v]$, such that, for every triple $(x,y,z)$ in the design, it is $not$ the case that $x = x_i$, $y = x_j$ and $z = x_k$ with $i < j < k$ and $k-i+1 \leq \ell$. In this report we provide a maximum $\ell$-good sequencing for each DTS$(v)$, $v \leq 7$.

An Achievement Game on a Cycle
Consider the following game played by Maker and Breaker on the vertices of the cycle $C_{n}$, with first move given to Breaker. The aim of Maker is to maximise the number of adjacent pairs of vertices that are both claimed by her, and the aim of Breaker is to minimise this number. The aim of this paper is to find this number exactly for all $n$ when both players play optimally, answering a related question of Dowden, Kang, Mikalački and Stojaković.

Generalized Rascal Triangles
The Rascal Triangle was introduced by three middle school students in 2010, and in this paper we describe number triangles that are generalizations of the Rascal Triangle and show that these Generalized Rascal Triangles are characterized by arithmetic sequences on all diagonals as well as a Rascal-like multiplication and addition rules.

Huang's theorem and the exterior algebra
In this note we give a version of Hao Huang's proof of the sensitivity conjecture, shedding some light on the origin of the magical matrix $A$ in that proof. For the history of the subject and the importance of this conjecture to the study of boolean functions, we refer to the original paper. Here we only state the main result: Consider the boolean cube $Q_n=\{0,1\}^n$ as a graph, whose edges connect pairs of vertices differing in one coordinate. Then any its induced subgraph on greater than $2^{n-1}$ (the half) vertices has degree of some vertex at least $\sqrt{n}$.

Envy-free division using mapping degree
Published in Mathematika 67:1 (2020), 36--53 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study envy-free division problems. The classical approach to such problems, used by David Gale, reduces to considering continuous maps of a simplex to itself and finding sufficient conditions for this map to hit the center of the simplex. The mere continuity of the map is not sufficient for reaching such a conclusion. Classically, one makes additional assumptions on the behavior of the map on the boundary of the simplex (for example, in the Knaster--Kuratowski--Mazurkiewicz and the Gale theorem). We follow Erel Segal-Halevi, Frédéric Meunier, and Shira Zerbib, and replace the boundary condition by another assumption, which has the meaning in economy as the possibility for a player to prefer an empty part in the segment partition problem. We solve the problem positively when $n$, the number of players that divide the segment, is a prime power, and we provide counterexamples for every $n$ which is not a prime power. We also provide counterexamples relevant to a wider class of fair or envy-free division problems when $n$ is odd and not a prime power. In this arxiv version that appears after the official publication we have corrected the statement and the proof of Lemma 3.4.
Block-avoiding point sequencings of directed triple systems

A directed triple system of order $v$ (or, DTS$(v)$) is decomposition of the complete directed graph $\vec{K_v}$ into transitive triples. A $v$-good sequencing of a DTS$(v)$ is a permutation of the points of the design, say $[x_1 \; \cdots \; x_v]$, such that, for every triple $(x,y,z)$ in the design, it is not the case that $x = x_i$, $y = x_j$ and $z = x_k$ with $i < j < k$. We prove that there exists a DTS$(v)$ having a $v$-good sequencing for all positive integers $v \equiv 0,1 \bmod {3}$. Further, for all positive integers $v \equiv 0,1 \bmod {3}$, $v \geq 7$, we prove that there is a DTS$(v)$ that does not have a $v$-good sequencing. We also derive some computational results concerning $v$-good sequencings of all the nonisomorphic DTS$(v)$ for $v \leq 7$.

Moments and interpretations of the Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet heuristics
Published • View Publication • BIB
The goal of this paper is to prove theorems that elucidate the Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet conjectures for the distributions of class groups of number fields, and further the understanding of their implications. We start by giving a simpler statement of the conjectures. We show that the probabilities that arise are inversely proportional the to number of automorphisms of structures slightly larger than the class groups. We find the moments of the Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet distributions and prove that the distributions are determined by their moments. In order to apply these conjectures to class groups of non-Galois fields, we prove a new theorem on the capitulation kernel (of ideal classes that become trivial in a larger field) to relate the class groups of non-Galois fields to the class groups of Galois fields. We then construct an integral model of the Hecke algebra of a finite group, show that it acts naturally on class groups of non-Galois fields, and prove that the Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet conjectures predict a distribution for class groups of non-Galois fields that involves the inverse of the number of automorphisms of the class group as a Hecke-module.

The contraction category of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the category whose objects are graphs of fixed genus and whose morphisms are contractions. We show that the corresponding contravariant module categories are Noetherian and we study two families of modules over these categories. The first takes a graph to a graded piece of the homology of its unordered configuration space and the second takes a graph to an intersection homology group whose dimension is given by a Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficient; in both cases we prove that the module is finitely generated. This allows us to draw conclusions about torsion in the homology groups of graph configuration spaces, and about the growth of Betti numbers of graph configuration spaces and Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients of graphical matroids. We also explore the relationship between our category and outer space, which is used in the study of outer automorphisms of free groups.

Modified Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Constants for $(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^2$
For an abelian group $G$ and an integer $t > 0$, the modified Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant $s'_t(G)$ is the smallest integer $\ell$ such that any zero-sum sequence of length at least $\ell$ with elements in $G$ contains a zero-sum subsequence (not necessarily consecutive) of length $t$. We compute bounds for $s'_{t}(G)$ for $G = \left(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\right)^2$ and $G = \left(\mathbb{Z}/n_1\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/n_2\mathbb{Z}\right)$. We also compute bounds for $G = \left(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}\right)^d$ where the subsequence can be any length in $\{p, \dots, (d-1)p\}$. Lastly, we investigate the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant for $G = \left(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\right)^2$ and subsequences of length $tn$.

Strongly Chordal Graph Generation using Intersection Graph Characterisation
Strongly chordal graphs are a subclass of chordal graphs. Farber also established a number of different characterisations for this class of graphs. These include an intersection graph characterisation that is analogous to a similar characterisation for chordal graphs. Seker et al. exploited this characterisation of chordal graphs to obtain an algorithm for generating them. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to show that strongly chordal graphs can also be generated using their intersection graph characterisation.
Achievable multiplicity partitions in the inverse eigenvalue problem of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Associated to a graph $G$ is a set $\mathcal{S}(G)$ of all real-valued symmetric matrices whose off-diagonal entries are nonzero precisely when the corresponding vertices of the graph are adjacent, and the diagonal entries are free to be chosen. If $G$ has $n$ vertices, then the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of any matrix in $\mathcal{S}(G)$ partition $n$; this is called a multiplicity partition. We study graphs for which a multiplicity partition with only two integers is possible. The graphs $G$ for which there is a matrix in $\mathcal{S}(G)$ with partitions $[n-2,2]$ have been characterized. We find families of graphs $G$ for which there is a matrix in $\mathcal{S}(G)$ with multiplicity partition $[n-k,k]$ for $k\geq 2$. We focus on generalizations of the complete multipartite graphs. We provide some methods to construct families of graphs with given multiplicity partitions starting from smaller such graphs. We also give constructions for graphs with matrix in $\mathcal{S}(G)$ with multiplicity partition $[n-k,k]$ to show the complexities of characterizing these graphs.

The asymptotics of reflectable weighted walks in arbitrary dimension
Published • View Publication • BIB
Gessel and Zeilberger generalized the reflection principle to handle walks confined to Weyl chambers, under some restrictions on the allowable steps. For those models that are invariant under the Weyl group action, they express the counting function for the walks with fixed starting and endpoint as a constant term in the Taylor series expansion of a rational function. Here, we focus on the simplest case, the Weyl groups $A_1^d$, which correspond to walks in the first orthant $\mathbb{N}^d$ taking steps from a subset of $\{\pm1, 0\}^d$ which is invariant under reflection across any axis. The principle novelty here is the incorporation of weights on the steps and the main result is a very general theorem giving asymptotic enumeration formulas for walks that end anywhere in the orthant. The formulas are determined by singularity analysis of multivariable rational functions, an approach that has already been successfully applied in numerous related cases.

A reverse Aldous/Broder algorithm
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Aldous--Broder algorithm provides a way of sampling a uniformly random spanning tree for finite connected graphs using simple random walk. Namely, start a simple random walk on a connected graph and stop at the cover time. The tree formed by all the first-entrance edges has the law of a uniform spanning tree. Here we show that the tree formed by all the last-exit edges also has the law of a uniform spanning tree. This answers a question of Tom Hayes and Cris Moore from 2010. The proof relies on a bijection that is related to the BEST theorem in graph theory. We also give other applications of our results, including new proofs of the reversibility of loop-erased random walk, of the Aldous--Broder algorithm itself, and of Wilson's algorithm.

The Hopf monoid and the basic invariant of directed graphs
Aguiar and Ardila defined the Hopf monoid GP of generalized permutahedra and showed that it contains many submonoids that correspond to combinatorial objects. They also give a basic polynomial invariant of generalized permutahedra, which then specializes to the submonoids. We define the Hopf monoid of directed graphs and show that it also embeds in GP. The resulting basic invariant coincides with the strict chromatic polynomial of Awan and Bernardi.

Reducing Path TSP to TSP
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a black-box reduction from the path version of the Traveling Salesman Problem (Path TSP) to the classical tour version (TSP). More precisely, we show that given an $α$-approximation algorithm for TSP, then, for any $ε>0$, there is an $(α+ε)$-approximation algorithm for the more general Path TSP. This reduction implies that the approximability of Path TSP is the same as for TSP, up to an arbitrarily small error. This avoids future discrepancies between the best known approximation factors achievable for these two problems, as they have existed until very recently. A well-studied special case of TSP, Graph TSP, asks for tours in unit-weight graphs. Our reduction shows that any $α$-approximation algorithm for Graph TSP implies an $(α+ε)$-approximation algorithm for its path version. By applying our reduction to the $1.4$-approximation algorithm for Graph TSP by Sebő and Vygen, we obtain a polynomial-time $(1.4+ε)$-approximation algorithm for Graph Path TSP, improving on a recent $1.497$-approximation algorithm of Traub and Vygen. We obtain our results through a variety of new techniques, including a novel way to set up a recursive dynamic program to guess significant parts of an optimal solution. At the core of our dynamic program we deal with instances of a new generalization of (Path) TSP which combines parity constraints with certain connectivity requirements. This problem, which we call $Φ$-TSP, has a constant-factor approximation algorithm and can be reduced to TSP in certain cases when the dynamic program would not make sufficient progress.
Medians in median graphs and their cube complexes in linear time
Published • View Publication • BIB
The median of a set of vertices $P$ of a graph $G$ is the set of all vertices $x$ of $G$ minimizing the sum of distances from $x$ to all vertices of $P$. In this paper, we present a linear time algorithm to compute medians in median graphs, improving over the existing quadratic time algorithm. We also present a linear time algorithm to compute medians in the $\ell_1$-cube complexes associated with median graphs. Median graphs constitute the principal class of graphs investigated in metric graph theory and have a rich geometric and combinatorial structure, due to their bijections with CAT(0) cube complexes and domains of event structures. Our algorithm is based on the majority rule characterization of medians in median graphs and on a fast computation of parallelism classes of edges ($Θ$-classes or hyperplanes) via Lexicographic Breadth First Search (LexBFS). To prove the correctness of our algorithm, we show that any LexBFS ordering of the vertices of $G$ satisfies the following fellow traveler property of independent interest: the parents of any two adjacent vertices of $G$ are also adjacent. Using the fast computation of the $Θ$-classes, we also compute the Wiener index (total distance) of $G$ in linear time and the distance matrix in optimal quadratic time.

Extreme rays of the $\ell^\infty$-nearest ultrametric tropical polytope
Published • View Publication • BIB
The set of ultrametrics on $[n]$ nodes that are $\ell^\infty$-nearest to a given dissimilarity map forms a $(\max,+)$ tropical polytope. Previous work of Bernstein has given a superset of the set containing all the phylogenetic trees that are extreme rays of this polytope. In this paper, we show that Bernstein's necessary condition of tropical extreme rays is sufficient only for $n=3$ but not for $n\geq 4$. Our proof relies on the exterior description of this tropical polytope, together with the tangent hypergraph techniques for extremality characterization. The sufficiency of the case $n=3$ is proved by explicitly finding all extreme rays through the exterior description. Meanwhile, an inductive construction of counterexamples is given to show the insufficiency for $n\geq 4$.

Enriched set-valued P-partitions and shifted stable Grothendieck polynomials
Published in Math. Z. 299 (2021), 1929-1972 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce an enriched analogue of Lam and Pylyavskyy's theory of set-valued $P$-partitions. An an application, we construct a $K$-theoretic version of Stembridge's Hopf algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions. We show that the symmetric part of this algebra is generated by Ikeda and Naruse's shifted stable Grothendieck polynomials. We give the first proof that the natural skew analogues of these power series are also symmetric. A central tool in our constructions is a "$K$-theoretic" Hopf algebra of labeled posets, which may be of independent interest. Our results also lead to some new explicit formulas for the involution $ω$ on the ring of symmetric functions.

Some relatives of the Catalan sequence
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, Vol. 121 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
We study a family of sequences $c_n(a_2,\ldots,a_r)$, where $r\ge2$ and $a_2,\ldots,a_r$ are real parameters. We find a sufficient condition for positive definiteness of the sequence $c_n(a_2,\ldots,a_r)$ and check several examples from OEIS. We also study relations of these sequences with the free and monotonic convolution.
