A partial Steiner triple system of order n is sequenceable if there is a sequence of length n of its distinct points such that no proper segment of the sequence is a union of point-disjoint blocks. We prove that if a partial Steiner triple system has at most three point-disjoint blocks, then it is sequenceable.
High-Dimensional Expanders from Expanders
We present an elementary way to transform an expander graph into a simplicial complex where all high order random walks have a constant spectral gap, i.e., they converge rapidly to the stationary distribution. As an upshot, we obtain new constructions, as well as a natural probabilistic model to sample constant degree high-dimensional expanders.
In particular, we show that given an expander graph $G$, adding self loops to $G$ and taking the tensor product of the modified graph with a high-dimensional expander produces a new high-dimensional expander. Our proof of rapid mixing of high order random walks is based on the decomposable Markov chains framework introduced by Jerrum et al.
Multiplex graph matching matched filters

We consider the problem of detecting a noisy induced multiplex template network in a larger multiplex background network. Our approach, which extends the framework of Sussman et al. (2019) to the multiplex setting, leverages a multiplex analogue of the classical graph matching problem to use the template as a matched filter for efficiently searching the background for candidate template matches. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated both theoretically and empirically, with particular attention paid to the potential benefits of considering multiple channels.
Hamming Polynomial of a Demimatroid

Following Britz, Johnsen, Mayhew and Shiromoto, we consider demi\-ma\-troids as a(nother) natural generalization of matroids. As they have shown, demi\-ma\-troids are the appropriate combinatorial objects for studying Wei's duality. Our results here apport further evidence about the trueness of that observation. We define the Hamming polynomial of a demimatroid $M$, denoted by $W(x,y,t)$, as a generalization of the extended Hamming weight enumerator of a matroid. The polynomial $W(x,y,t)$ is a specialization of the Tutte polynomial of $M$, and actually is equivalent to it. Guided by work of Johnsen, Roksvold and Verdure for matroids, we prove that Betti numbers of a demimatroid and its elongations determine the Hamming polynomial. Our results may be applied to simplicial complexes since in a canonical way they can be viewed as demimatroids. Furthermore, following work of Brylawski and Gordon, we show how demimatroids may be generalized one step further, to combinatroids. A combinatroid, or Brylawski structure, is an integer valued function $ρ$, defined over the power set of a finite ground set, satisfying the only condition $ρ(\emptyset)=0$. Even in this extreme generality, we will show that many concepts and invariants in coding theory can be carried on directly to combinatroids, say, Tutte polynomial, characteristic polynomial, MacWilliams identity, extended Hamming polynomial, and the $r$-th generalized Hamming polynomial; this last one, at least conjecturelly, guided by the work of Jurrius and Pellikaan for linear codes. All this largely extends the notions of deletion, contraction, duality and codes to non-matroidal structures.

The product monomial crystal was defined by Kamnitzer, Tingley, Webster, Weekes, and Yacobi for any semisimple simply-laced Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, and depends on a collection of parameters $\mathbf{R}$. We show that a family of truncations of this crystal are Demazure crystals, and give a Demazure-type formula for the character of each truncation, and the crystal itself. This character formula shows that the product monomial crystal is the crystal of a generalised Demazure module, as defined by Lakshmibai, Littelmann and Magyar. In type $A$, we show the product monomial crystal is the crystal of a generalised Schur module associated to a column-convex diagram depending on $\mathbf{R}$.

We investigate chromatic symmetric functions in the relation to the algebra $Γ$ of symmetric functions generated by Schur $Q$-functions. We construct natural bases of $Γ$ in terms of chromatic symmetric functions. We also consider the $p$-positivity of skew Schur $Q$-functions and find a class of $p$-positive ribbon Schur $Q$-functions, making a conjecture that they are \emph{all}. We include many concrete computational results that support our conjecture.
Splitting necklaces, with constraints
We prove several versions of N. Alon's "necklace-splitting theorem", subject to additional constraints, as illustrated by the following results. (1) The "almost equicardinal necklace-splitting theorem" claims that, without increasing the number of cuts, one guarantees the existence of a fair splitting such that each thief is allocated (approximately) one and the same number of pieces of the necklace (including "degenerate pieces" if they exist), provided the number of thieves $r=p^ν$ is a prime power. (2) The "binary splitting theorem" claims that if $r=2^d$ and the thieves are associated with the vertices of a $d$-cube then, without increasing the number of cuts, one can guarantee the existence of a fair splitting such that adjacent pieces are allocated to thieves that share an edge of the cube. This result provides a positive answer to the "binary splitting necklace conjecture" of Asada at al. (Conjecture 2.11 in [7]) in the case $r=2^d$. (3) An interesting variation arises when the thieves have their own individual preferences. We prove several "envy-free fair necklace-splitting theorems" of various level of generality. By specialization we obtain numerous corollaries, among them envy-free versions of (a) "almost equicardinal splitting theorem", (b) "necklace-splitting theorem for $r$-unavoidable preferences", (c) "envy-free binary splitting theorem", etc. As a corollary we also obtain a recent result of Avvakumov and Karasev [1] about envy-free divisions where players may prefer an empty part of the necklace.

In this paper we define the chromatic number of a lattice: It is the least number of colors one needs to color the interiors of the cells of the Voronoi tessellation of a lattice so that no two cells sharing a facet are of the same color. We compute the chromatic number of the root lattices, their duals, and of the Leech lattice, we consider the chromatic number of lattices of Voronoi's first kind, and we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the chromatic number of lattices when the dimension tends to infinity. We introduce a spectral lower bound for the chromatic number of lattices in spirit of Hoffman's bound for finite graphs. We compute this bound for the root lattices and relate it to the character theory of the corresponding Lie groups.
Lagrangians of Hypergraphs II: When colex is best

A well-known conjecture of Frankl and Füredi from 1989 states that an initial segment of colex of has the largest Lagrangian of any $r$-uniform hypergraph with $m$ hyperedges. We show that this is true when $r=3$. We also give a new proof of a related conjecture of Nikiforov and a counterexample to an old conjecture of Ahlswede and Katona.

A graph $G$ is a non-separating planar graph if there is a drawing $D$ of $G$ on the plane such that (1) no two edges cross each other in $D$ and (2) for any cycle $C$ in $D$, any two vertices not in $C$ are on the same side of $C$ in $D$.
Non-separating planar graphs are closed under taking minors and are a subclass of planar graphs and a superclass of outerplanar graphs.
In this paper, we show that a graph is a non-separating planar graph if and only if it does not contain $K_1 \cup K_4$ or $K_1 \cup K_{2,3}$ or $K_{1,1,3}$ as a minor.
Furthermore, we provide a structural characterisation of this class of graphs. More specifically, we show that any maximal non-separating planar graph is either an outerplanar graph or a subgraph of a wheel or it can be obtained by subdividing some of the side-edges of the 1-skeleton of a triangular prism (two disjoint triangles linked by a perfect matching).
Lastly, to demonstrate an application of non-separating planar graphs, we use the characterisation of non-separating planar graphs to prove that there are maximal linkless graphs with $3n-3$ edges which provides an answer to a question asked by Horst Sachs about the number of edges of linkless graphs in 1983.
Injective edge-coloring of sparse graphs

An injective edge-coloring $c$ of a graph $G$ is an edge-coloring such that if $e_1$, $e_2$, and $e_3$ are three consecutive edges in $G$ (they are consecutive if they form a path or a cycle of length three), then $e_1$ and $e_3$ receive different colors. The minimum integer $k$ such that, $G$ has an injective edge-coloring with $k$ colors, is called the injective chromatic index of $G$ ($χ'_{\textrm{inj}}(G)$). This parameter was introduced by Cardoso et \textit{al.} \cite{CCCD} motivated by the Packet Radio Network problem. They proved that computing $χ'_{\textrm{inj}}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is NP-hard. We give new upper bounds for this parameter and we present the relationships of the injective edge-coloring with other colorings of graphs. The obtained general bound gives 8 for the injective chromatic index of a subcubic graph. If the graph is subcubic bipartite we improve this last bound. We prove that a subcubic bipartite graph has an injective chromatic index bounded by $6$. We also prove that if $G$ is a subcubic graph with maximum average degree less than $\frac{7}{3} $ (resp. $\frac{8}{3} $, $3$), then $G$ admits an injective edge-coloring with at most 4 (resp. $6$, $7$) colors. Moreover, we establish a tight upper bound for subcubic outerplanar graphs.

In this work, we establish a general relationship between the enumeration of weighted directed paths and skew Schur functions, extending work by Bousquet-Mélou, who expressed generating functions of discrete excursions in terms of rectangular Schur functions.
The alternating central extension for the positive part of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$
This paper is about the positive part $U^+_q$ of the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$. The algebra $U^+_q$ has a presentation with two generators $A,B$ that satisfy the cubic $q$-Serre relations. Recently we introduced a type of element in $U^+_q$, said to be alternating. Each alternating element commutes with exactly one of $A$, $B$, $qBA-q^{-1}AB$, $qAB-q^{-1}BA$; this gives four types of alternating elements. There are infinitely many alternating elements of each type, and these mutually commute. In the present paper we use the alternating elements to obtain a central extension $\mathcal U^+_q$ of $U^+_q$. We define $\mathcal U^+_q$ by generators and relations. These generators, said to be alternating, are in bijection with the alternating elements of $U^+_q$. We display a surjective algebra homomorphism $\mathcal U^+_q \to U^+_q$ that sends each alternating generator of $\mathcal U^+_q$ to the corresponding alternating element in $U^+_q$. We adjust this homomorphism to obtain an algebra isomorphism $\mathcal U_q^+ \to U^+_q \otimes \mathbb F \lbrack z_1, z_2,\ldots\rbrack$ where $\mathbb F$ is the ground field and $\lbrace z_n\rbrace_{n=1}^\infty$ are mutually commuting indeterminates. We show that the alternating generators form a PBW basis for $\mathcal U_q^+$. We discuss how $\mathcal U^+_q$ is related to the work of Baseilhac, Koizumi, Shigechi concerning the $q$-Onsager algebra and integrable lattice models.

An equitable $k$-partition of a graph $G$ is a collection of induced subgraphs $(G[V_1],G[V_2],\ldots,G[V_k])$ of $G$ such that $(V_1,V_2,\ldots,V_k)$ is a partition of $V(G)$ and $-1\le |V_i|-|V_j|\le 1$ for all $1\le i<j\le k$. We prove that every planar graph admits an equitable $2$-partition into $3$-degenerate graphs, an equitable $3$-partition into $2$-degenerate graphs, and an equitable $3$-partition into two forests and one graph.
Combinatorial properties of sparsely totient numbers
Let $N_1(m)=\max\{n \colon φ(n) \leq m\}$ and $N_1 = \{N_1(m) \colon m \in φ(\mathbb{N})\}$ where $φ(n)$ denotes the Euler's totient function. Masser and Shiu \cite{masser} call the elements of $N_1$ as `sparsely totient numbers' and initiated the study of these numbers. In this article, we establish several results for sparsely totient numbers. First, we show that a squarefree integer divides all sufficiently large sparsely totient numbers and a non-squarefree integer divides infinitely many sparsely totient numbers. Next, we construct explicit infinite families of sparsely totient numbers and describe their relationship with the distribution of consecutive primes. We also study the sparseness of $N_1$ and prove that it is multiplicatively piecewise syndetic but not additively piecewise syndetic. Finally, we investigate arithmetic/geometric progressions and other additive and multiplicative patterns like $\{x, y, x+y\}, \{x, y, xy\}, \{x+y, xy\}$ and their generalizations in the sparsely totient numbers.

A celebrated theorem of Pippenger states that any almost regular hypergraph with small codegrees has an almost perfect matching. We show that one can find such an almost perfect matching which is `pseudorandom', meaning that, for instance, the matching contains as many edges from a given set of edges as predicted by a heuristic argument.
A rainbow blow-up lemma for almost optimally bounded edge-colourings

A subgraph of an edge-coloured graph is called rainbow if all its edges have different colours. We prove a rainbow version of the blow-up lemma of Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi that applies to almost optimally bounded colourings. A corollary of this is that there exists a rainbow copy of any bounded-degree spanning subgraph $H$ in a quasirandom host graph $G$, assuming that the edge-colouring of $G$ fulfills a boundedness condition that is asymptotically best possible.
This has many applications beyond rainbow colourings, for example to graph decompositions, orthogonal double covers and graph labellings.

We show that the ring of symmetric functions in superspace is a cocommutative and self-dual Hopf algebra. We provide formulas for the action of the coproduct and the antipode on various bases of that ring. We introduce the ring sQSym of quasisymmetric functions in superspace and show that it is a Hopf algebra. We give explicitly the product, coproduct and antipode on the basis of monomial quasisymmetric functions in superspace. We prove that the Hopf dual of sQSym, the ring sNSym of noncommutative symmetric functions in superspace, has a multiplicative basis dual to the monomial quasisymmetric functions in superspace.
A Note on the Frankl Conjecture
The Frankl conjecture (called also union-closed sets conjecture) is one of the famous unsolved conjectures in combinatorics of finite sets. In this short note, we introduce and to some extent justify some variants of the Frankl conjecture.
Sign Patterns of Orthogonal Matrices and the Strong Inner Product Property

A new condition, the strong inner product property, is introduced and used to construct sign patterns of row orthogonal matrices. Using this property, infinite families of sign patterns allowing row orthogonality are found. These provide insight into the underlying combinatorial structure of row orthogonal matrices. Algorithmic techniques for verifying that a matrix has the strong inner product property are also presented. These techniques lead to a generalization of the strong inner product property and can be easily implemented using various software.
