Color-position symmetry in interacting particle systems
We prove a color-position symmetry for a class of ASEP-like interacting particle systems with discrete time on the one-dimensional lattice. The full space-time inhomogeneity of our systems allows to apply the result to colored (or multi-species) ASEP and stochastic vertex models for a certain class of initial/boundary conditions, generalizing previous results of Amir-Angel-Valko and Borodin-Wheeler. We are also able to use the symmetry, together with previously known results for uncolored models, to find novel asymptotic behavior of the second class particles in several situations.

A note on spanning $K_r$-cycles in random graphs
We find the threshold for the existence of a collection of edge disjoint copies of $K_r$ that form a cyclic structure and span all vertices of $G_{n,p}$. We use a recent result of Riordan to give a two line proof of the main result.

Generalized Lyndon Factorizations of Infinite Words
A generalized lexicographic order on words is a lexicographic order where the total order of the alphabet depends on the position of the comparison. A generalized Lyndon word is a finite word which is strictly smallest among its class of rotations with respect to a generalized lexicographic order. This notion can be extended to infinite words: an infinite generalized Lyndon word is an infinite word which is strictly smallest among its class of suffixes. We prove a conjecture of Dolce, Restivo, and Reutenauer: every infinite word has a unique nonincreasing factorization into finite and infinite generalized Lyndon words. When this factorization has finitely many terms, we characterize the last term of the factorization. Our methods also show that the infinite generalized Lyndon words are precisely the words with infinitely many generalized Lyndon prefixes.
The diameter of lattice zonotopes
Published in Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 148(8), 3507-3516 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
We establish sharp asymptotic estimates for the diameter of primitive zonotopes when their dimension is fixed. We also prove that, for infinitely many integers $k$, the largest possible diameter of a lattice zonotope contained in the hypercube $[0,k]^d$ is uniquely achieved by a primitive zonotope. As a consequence, we obtain that this largest diameter grows like $k^{d/(d+1)}$ up to an explicit multiplicative constant, when $d$ is fixed and $k$ goes to infinity, providing a new lower bound on the largest possible diameter of a lattice polytope contained in $[0,k]^d$.

Torus actions of complexity one in non-general position
Published in Osaka J. Math. 58:4 (2021), 839-853 • Search Publication
Let the compact torus $T^{n-1}$ act on a smooth compact manifold $X^{2n}$ effectively with nonempty finite set of fixed points. We pose the question: what can be said about the orbit space $X^{2n}/T^{n-1}$ if the action is cohomologically equivariantly formal (which essentially means that $H^{odd}(X^{2n};\mathbb{Z})=0$). It happens that homology of the orbit space can be arbitrary in degrees $3$ and higher. For any finite simplicial complex $L$ we construct an equivariantly formal manifold $X^{2n}$ such that $X^{2n}/T^{n-1}$ is homotopy equivalent to $Σ^3L$. The constructed manifold $X^{2n}$ is the total space of the projective line bundle over the permutohedral variety hence the action on $X^{2n}$ is Hamiltonian and cohomologically equivariantly formal. We introduce the notion of the action in $j$-general position and prove that, for any simplicial complex $M$, there exists an equivariantly formal action of complexity one in $j$-general position such that its orbit space is homotopy equivalent to $Σ^{j+2}M$.

The algebraic boundary of the sonc cone
In this article, we explore the connections between nonnegativity, the theory of $A$-discriminants, and tropical geometry. For an integral support set $A \subset \mathbb{Z}^n$, we cover the boundary of the sonc-cone by semi-algebraic sets that are parametrized by families of tropical hypersurfaces. As an application, we characterization generic support sets for which the sonc-cone is equal to the sparse nonnegativity cone, and we describe a semi-algebraic stratification of the boundary of the sonc-cone in the univariate case.

Orbits of Hamiltonian Paths and Cycles in Complete Graphs
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol.23 (2020) • Search Publication
We enumerate certain geometric equivalence classes of subgraphs induced by Hamiltonian paths and cycles in complete graphs. Said classes are orbits under the action of certain direct products of dihedral and cyclic groups on sets of strings representing subgraphs. These orbits are enumerated using Burnside's lemma. The technique used also provides an alternative proof of the formulae found by S. W. Golomb and L. R. Welch which give the number of distinct $n$-gons on fixed, regularly spaced vertices up to rotation and optionally reflection.

Spectrum of some arrow-bordered circulant matrix
Given a circulant matrix $\mathrm{circ}(c,a,0,0,...,0,a)$, $a\ne 0$, of order~$n$, we ``border'' it from left and from above by constant column and row, respectively, and we set the left top entry to be $-nc$. This way we get a~particular title object, an example of what we call an \textit{abc matrix\/}, or an \textit{arrow-bordered circulant (matrix)\/}. We find its eigenpairs and we discuss its spectrum with stress on extreme eigenvalues and their bounds. At last we notice its relation to a~weighted wheel graph

DP-colorings of uniform hypergraphs and splittings of Boolean hypercube into faces
Published in Electronic J. Combin. 2022. 29(3), \#P3.37 • View Publication • BIB
We develop a connection between DP-colorings of $k$-uniform hypergraphs of order $n$ and coverings of $n$-dimensional Boolean hypercube by pairs of antipodal $(n-k)$-dimensional faces. Bernshteyn and Kostochka established that the lower bound on edges in a non-2-DP-colorable $k$-uniform hypergraph is equal to $2^{k-1}$ for odd $k$ and $2^{k-1}+1$ for even $k$. They proved that these bounds are tight for $k=3,4$. In this paper, we prove that the bound is achieved for all odd $k\geq 3$.

On Restricted Ternary Words and Insets
We investigate combinatorial properties of a kind of insets we defined in an earlier paper, interpreting them now in terms of restricted ternary words. This allows us to give new combinatorial interpretations of a number of known integer sequences, namely the coefficients of Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds, Fibonacci numbers, Delannoy numbers, asymmetric Delannoy numbers, Sulanke numbers, coordinating sequences for some cubic lattices, crystal ball sequences for some cubic lattices, and others. We also obtain several new properties of said insets. In particular, we derive three generating functions when two of three variables are constant. At the end, we state 40 combinatorial configurations counted by our words.

Triangle-creation processes on cubic graphs
An edge switch is an operation which makes a local change in a graph while maintaining the degree of every vertex. We introduce a switch move, called a triangle switch, which creates or deletes at least one triangle. Specifically, a make move is a triangle switch which chooses a path $zwvxy$ of length 4 and replaces it by a triangle $vxwv$ and an edge $yz$, while a break move performs the reverse operation. We consider various Markov chains which perform random triangle switches, and assume that every possible make or break move has positive probability of being performed. Our first result is that any such Markov chain is irreducible on the set of all 3-regular graphs with vertex set $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$. For a particular, natural Markov chain of this type, we obtain a non-trivial linear upper and lower bounds on the number of triangles in the long run. These bounds are almost surely obtained in linear time, irrespective of the starting graph.
Loop equations and a proof of Zvonkine's $qr$-ELSV formula

We prove the 2006 Zvonkine conjecture that expresses Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles in terms of intersection numbers with the Chiodo classes via the so-called $r$-ELSV formula, as well as its orbifold generalization, the $qr$-ELSV formula, proposed recently in [KLPS17].

On the conjecture of bijection between perfect matching and sub-hypercube in folded hypercubes
Dong and Wang in [Theor. Comput. Sci. 771 (2019) 93--98] conjectured that the resulting graph of the $n$-dimensional folded hypercube $FQ_n$ by deleting any perfect matching is isomorphic to the hypercube $Q_n$. In this paper, we show that the conjecture holds when $n=2,3$, and it is not true for $n\geq4$.
Perfect Pseudo-Matchings in cubic graphs
A perfect pseudo-matching M in a cubic graph G is a spanning subgraph of G such that every component of M is isomorphic to K_2 or to K_1,3. In view of snarks G with dominating cycle C, this is a natural generalization of perfect matchings since G-E(C) is a perfect pseudo-matching. Of special interest are such M where the graph G/M is planar because such G have a cycle double cover. We show that various well known classes of snarks contain planarizing perfect pseudo-matchings, and that there are at least as many snarks with planarizing perfect pseudo-matchings as there are cyclically 5-edge-connected snarks.

Inverse sum indeg energy of graphs
Suppose G is an n-vertex simple graph with vertex set {v1,..., vn} and d(i), i = 1,..., n, is the degree of vertex vi in G. The ISI matrix S(G) = [sij] of G is a square matrix of order n and is defined by sij = d(i)d(j)/d(i)+d(j) if the vertices vi and vj are adjacent and sij = 0 otherwise. The S-eigenvalues of G are the eigenvalues of its ISI matrix S(G). Recently the notion of inverse sum indeg (henceforth, ISI) energy of graphs is introduced and is defined as the sum of absolute values of S-eigenvalues of graph G. We give ISI energy formula of some graph classes. We also obtain some bounds for ISI energy of graphs.

The $r$-matching sequencibility of complete multi-$k$-partite $k$-graphs
Alspach [{\sl Bull. Inst. Combin. Appl.}~{\bf 52} (2008), 7--20] defined the maximal matching sequencibility of a graph $G$, denoted~$ms(G)$, to be the largest integer $s$ for which there is an ordering of the edges of $G$ such that every $s$ consecutive edges form a matching. In this paper, we consider the natural analogue for hypergraphs of this and related results and determine $ms(λ\mathcal{K}_{n_1,\ldots, n_k})$ where $λ\mathcal{K}_{n_1,\ldots, n_k}$ denotes the multi-$k$-partite $k$-graph with edge multiplicity $λ$ and parts of sizes $n_1,\ldots,n_k$, respectively. It turns out that these invariants may be given surprisingly precise and somewhat elegant descriptions, in a much more general setting.

Strong metric dimension of generalized Jahangir graph
Let $G$ be a simple and connected graph with vertex set $V(G)$. A vertex $w\in V(G)$ strongly resolves two vertices $u,v \in V(G)$ if $v$ belongs to a shortest $u-w$ path or $u$ belongs to a shortest $v-w$ path. A set $W \subseteq V(G)$ is a strong resolving set for $G$ if every pair of vertices of $G$ is strongly resolved by some vertex of $W$. A strong metric basis of $G$ is a strong resolving set for $G$ with minimum cardinality. The strong metric dimension of $G$, denoted by $sdim(G)$, is the cardinality of a strong metric basis of $G$. In this paper we compute the strong metric dimension of generalized Jahangir graph $J(n,m)$, where $m\geq 3$ and $n\geq 2$.
Hat chromatic number of graphs
We study the hat chromatic number of a graph defined in the following way: there is one player at each vertex of a loopless graph $G$, an adversary places a hat of one of $K$ colors on the head of each player, two players can see each other's hats if and only if they are at adjacent vertices. All players simultaneously try to guess the color of their hat. The players cannot communicate but collectively determine a strategy before the hats are placed. The hat chromatic number, $μ(G)$, is the largest number $K$ of colors such that the players are able to fix a strategy that will ensure that for every possible placement of hats at least one of the guesses correctly. We compute $μ(G)$ for several classes of graphs, for others we establish some bounds. We establish connections between the hat chromatic number, the chromatic number and the coloring number. We also introduce several variants of the game: with multiple guesses, restrictions on allowed strategies or restrictions on colorings. We show examples how the modified games can be used to obtain interesting results for the original game.

Asymptotics of multivariate sequences in the presence of a lacuna
We explain a discontinuous drop in the exponential growth rate for certain multivariate generating functions at a critical parameter value, in even dimensions d at least 4. This result depends on computations in the homology of the algebraic variety where the generating function has a pole. These computations are similar to, and inspired by, a thread of research in applications of complex algebraic geometry to hyperbolic PDEs, going back to Leray, Petrowski, Atiyah, Bott and Garding. As a consequence, we give a topological explanation for certain asymptotic phenomenon appearing in the combinatorics and number theory literature. Furthermore, we show how to combine topological methods with symbolic algebraic computation to determine explicitly the dominant asymptotics for such multivariate generating functions, giving a significant new tool to attack the so-called connection problem for asymptotics of P-recursive sequences. This in turn enables the rigorous determination of integer coefficients in the Morse-Smale complex, which are difficult to determine using direct geometric methods.

A new perspective on the distance problem over prime fields
Let $\mathbb{F}_p$ be a prime field, and ${\mathcal E}$ a set in $\mathbb{F}_p^2$. Let $Δ({\mathcal E})=\{||x-y||: x,y \in {\mathcal E} \}$, the distance set of ${\mathcal E}$. In this paper, we provide a quantitative connection between the distance set $Δ({\mathcal E})$ and the set of rectangles determined by points in ${\mathcal E}$. As a consequence, we obtain a new lower bound on the size of $Δ({\mathcal E})$ when ${\mathcal E}$ is not too large, improving a previous estimate due to Lund and Petridis and establishing an approach that should lead to significant further improvements.
