Low-Complexity Tilings of the Plane
A two-dimensional configuration is a coloring of the infinite grid Z^2 with finitely many colors. For a finite subset D of Z^2, the D-patterns of a configuration are the colored patterns of shape D that appear in the configuration. The number of distinct D-patterns of a configuration is a natural measure of its complexity. A configuration is considered having low complexity with respect to shape D if the number of distinct D-patterns is at most |D|, the size of the shape. This extended abstract is a short review of an algebraic method to study periodicity of such low complexity configurations.

Effective Coefficient Asymptotics of Multivariate Rational Functions via Semi-Numerical Algorithms for Polynomial Systems
Published in Journal of Symbolic Computation 103 (2021), 234--279 • View Publication • BIB
The coefficient sequences of multivariate rational functions appear in many areas of combinatorics. Their diagonal coefficient sequences enjoy nice arithmetic and asymptotic properties, and the field of analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV) makes it possible to compute asymptotic expansions. We consider these methods from the point of view of effectivity. In particular, given a rational function, ACSV requires one to determine a (generically) finite collection of points that are called critical and minimal. Criticality is an algebraic condition, meaning it is well treated by classical methods in computer algebra, while minimality is a semi-algebraic condition describing points on the boundary of the domain of convergence of a multivariate power series. We show how to obtain dominant asymptotics for the diagonal coefficient sequence of multivariate rational functions under some genericity assumptions using symbolic-numeric techniques. To our knowledge, this is the first completely automatic treatment and complexity analysis for the asymptotic enumeration of rational functions in an arbitrary number of variables.
Plane bipolar orientations and quadrant walks
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 81 (2020) Article B81l • Search Publication
Bipolar orientations of planar maps have recently attracted some interest in combinatorics, probability theory and theoretical physics. Plane bipolar orientations with $n$ edges are known to be counted by the $n$th Baxter number $b(n)$, which can be defined by a linear recurrence relation with polynomial coefficients. Equivalently, the associated generating function $\sum_n b(n)t^n$ is D-finite. In this paper, we address a much refined enumeration problem, where we record for every $r$ the number of faces of degree $r$. When these degrees are bounded, we show that the associated generating function is given as the constant term of a multivariate rational series, and thus is still D-finite. We also provide detailed asymptotic estimates for the corresponding numbers. The methods used earlier to count all plane bipolar orientations, regardless of their face degrees, do not generalize easily to record face degrees. Instead, we start from a recent bijection, due to Kenyon et al., that sends bipolar orientations onto certain lattice walks confined to the first quadrant. Due to this bijection, the study of bipolar orientations meets the study of walks confined to a cone, which has been extremely active in the past 15 years. Some of our proofs rely on recent developments in this field, while others are purely bijective. Our asymptotic results also involve probabilistic arguments.

Kesten-McKay law for random subensembles of Paley equiangular tight frames
We apply the method of moments to prove a recent conjecture of Haikin, Zamir and Gavish (2017) concerning the distribution of the singular values of random subensembles of Paley equiangular tight frames. Our analysis applies more generally to real equiangular tight frames of redundancy 2, and we suspect similar ideas will eventually produce more general results for arbitrary choices of redundancy.

Fast uniform generation of random graphs with given degree sequences
In this paper we provide an algorithm that generates a graph with given degree sequence uniformly at random. Provided that $Δ^4=O(m)$, where $Δ$ is the maximal degree and $m$ is the number of edges, the algorithm runs in expected time $O(m)$. Our algorithm significantly improves the previously most efficient uniform sampler, which runs in expected time $O(m^2Δ^2)$ for the same family of degree sequences. Our method uses a novel ingredient which progressively relaxes restrictions on an object being generated uniformly at random, and we use this to give fast algorithms for uniform sampling of graphs with other degree sequences as well. Using the same method, we also obtain algorithms with expected run time which is (i) linear for power-law degree sequences in cases where the previous best was $O(n^{4.081})$, and (ii) $O(nd+d^4)$ for $d$-regular graphs when $d=o(\sqrt n)$, where the previous best was $O(nd^3)$.

Expanding polynomials on sets with few products
In this note, we prove that if $A$ is a finite set of real numbers such that $|AA| = K|A|$, then for every polynomial $f \in \mathbb{R}[x,y]$ we have that $|f(A,A)| = Ω_{K,\operatorname{deg} f}(|A|^2)$, unless $f$ is of the form $f(x,y) = g(M(x,y))$ for some monomial $M$ and some univariate polynomial $g$.

Some Remarks on Systems of Equiangular Lines
In this note, we study the maximum number $N_α(d)$ of a system of equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with cosine $α$, where $\frac{1}α$ is not an odd positive integer. This note is motivated by a remark in a $2018$ paper by Balla, Dräxler, Keevash and Sudakov.

Increasing paths in countable graphs
In this paper we study variations of an old result by Müller, Reiterman, and the last author stating that a countable graph has a subgraph with infinite degrees if and only if in any labeling of the vertices (or edges) of this graph by positive integers we can always find an infinite increasing path. We study corresponding questions for hypergraphs and directed graphs. For example we show that the condition that a hypergraph contains a subhypergraph with infinite degrees is equivalent to the condition that any vertex labeling contains an infinite increasing loose path. We also find an equivalent condition for a graph to have a property that any vertex labeling with positive integers contains a path of arbitrary finite length, and we study related problems for oriented graphs and labelings with $\mathbb{Z}$ (instead of $\mathbb{N}$). For example, we show that for every simple hypergraph, there is a labelling of its edges by $\mathbb{Z}$ that forbids one-way infinite increasing paths.

Typical Sequences Revisited --- Computing Width Parameters of Graphs
In this work, we give a structural lemma on merges of typical sequences, a notion that was introduced in 1991 [Lagergren and Arnborg, Bodlaender and Kloks, both ICALP 1991] to obtain constructive linear time parameterized algorithms for treewidth and pathwidth. The lemma addresses a runtime bottleneck in those algorithms but so far it does not lead to asymptotically faster algorithms. However, we apply the lemma to show that the cutwidth and the modified cutwidth of series parallel digraphs can be computed in $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$ time.

New Expander Bounds from Affine Group Energy
The purpose of this article is to further explore how the structure of the affine group can be used to deduce new incidence theorems, and to explore sum-product type applications of these incidence bounds, building on the recent work of Rudnev and Shkredov. We bound the energy of several systems of lines, in some cases obtaining a better energy bound than the corresponding bounds obtained by Rudnev and Shkredov by exploiting a connection with collinear quadruples. Our motivation for seeking to generalise and improve the incidence bound obtained by Rudnev and Shkredov comes from possible applications to sum-product problems. For example, we prove that, for any finite $A \subset \mathbb R$ the following superquadratic bound holds: \[ \left| \left \{ \frac{ab-cd}{a-c} : a,b,c,d \in A \right \} \right| \gg |A|^{2+\frac{1}{14}}. \] This improves the previously known bound with exponent $2$. We also give a threshold-beating asymmetric sum-product estimate for sets with small sum set by proving that there exists a positive constant $c$ such that for all finite $A,B \subset \mathbb R$, \[ |A+A| \ll K|A| \Rightarrow |AB| \gg_K |A||B|^{1/2+c}. \]

New necessary conditions for (negative) Latin square type partial difference sets in abelian groups
Partial difference sets (for short, PDSs) with parameters ($n^2$, $r(n-ε)$, $εn+r^2-3εr$, $r^2-εr$) are called Latin square type (respectively negative Latin square type) PDSs if $ε=1$ (respectively $ε=-1$). In this paper, we will give restrictions on the parameter $r$ of a (negative) Latin square type partial difference set in an abelian group of non-prime power order. As far as we know no previous general restrictions on $r$ were known. Our restrictions are particularly useful when $a$ is much larger than $b$. As an application, we show that if there exists an abelian negative Latin square type PDS with parameter set $(9p^{4s}, r(3p^{2s}+1),-3p^{2s}+r^2+3r,r^2+r)$, $1 \le r \le \frac{3p^{2s}-1}{2}$, $p\equiv 1 \pmod 4$ a prime number and $s$ is an odd positive integer, then there are at most three possible values for $r$. For two of these three $r$ values, J. Polhill gave constructions in 2009.

On the canonical ideal of the Ehrhart ring of the chain polytope of a poset
Let P be a poset, O(P) the order polytope of P and C(P) the chain polytope of P. In this paper, we study the canonical ideal of the Ehrhart ring K[C(P)] of C(P) over a field K and characterize the level (resp. anticanonical level) property of K[C(P)] by a combinatorial structure of P. In particular, we show that if K[C(P)] is level (resp. anticanonical level), then so is K[O(P)]. We exhibit examples which show the converse does not hold. Moreover, we show that the symbolic powers of the canonical ideal of K[C(P)] are identical with ordinary ones and degrees of the generators of the canonical and anticanonical ideals are consecutive integers.

Super-pancyclic hypergraphs and bipartite graphs
We find Dirac-type sufficient conditions for a hypergraph $\mathcal H$ with few edges to be hamiltonian. We also show that these conditions provide that $\mathcal H$ is {\em super-pancyclic}, i.e., for each $A \subseteq V(\mathcal H)$ with $|A| \geq 3$, $\mathcal H$ contains a Berge cycle with vertex set $A$. We mostly use the language of bipartite graphs, because every bipartite graph is the incidence graph of a multihypergraph. In particular, we extend some results of Jackson on the existence of long cycles in bipartite graphs where the vertices in one part have high minimum degree. Furthermore, we prove a conjecture of Jackson from 1981 on long cycles in 2-connected bipartite graphs.

$N_\infty$-operads and associahedra
Published in Pacific J. Math. 315 (2021) 285-304 • View Publication • BIB
We provide a new combinatorial approach to studying the collection of N-infinity-operads in G-equivariant homotopy theory for G a finite cyclic group. In particular, we show that for G the cyclic group of order p^n the natural order on the collection of N-infinity-operads stands in bijection with the poset structure of the (n+1)-associahedron. We further provide a lower bound for the number of possible N-infinity-operads for any finite cyclic group G.

Long rainbow arithmetic progressions
Define $T_k$ as the minimal $t\in \mathbb{N}$ for which there is a rainbow arithmetic progression of length $k$ in every equinumerous $t$-coloring of $[tn]$ for all $n\in \mathbb{N}$. Jungić, Licht (Fox), Mahdian, Nesetril and Radoicić proved that $\lfloor{\frac{k^2}{4}\rfloor}\le T_k$. We almost close the gap between the upper and lower bounds by proving that $T_k \le k^2e^{(\ln\ln k)^2(1+o(1))}$. Conlon, Fox and Sudakov have independently shown a stronger statement that $T_k=O(k^2\log k)$.

Dimensions of semi-simple matrix algebras
For $n \geq 225$ we show that every integer of the form $n + 2m$ such that $0 \leq 2m \leq n^{2} - \frac{9}{2} n \sqrt{n}$ is the dimension of a connected semi-simple subalgebra of $\mathrm{M}_{n}(k)$, that is, a subalgebra isomorphic to a direct sum of $t$ disjoint subalgebras $\mathrm{M}_{n_{i}}(k)$, where $\sum_{i=1}^{t} n_{i} = n$. From this, we conclude that the density of integers in $[0,\ldots, n^{2}]$ which are the dimension of a semi-simple subalgebra of $\mathrm{M}_{n}(k)$ tends to $1$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$.

Commutativity preserving transformations on conjugacy classes of finite rank self-adjoint operators
Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space and let ${\mathcal C}$ be a conjugacy class of finite rank self-adjoint operators on $H$ with respect to the action of unitary operators. We suppose that ${\mathcal C}$ is formed by operators of rank $k$ and for every $A\in {\mathcal C}$ the dimensions of distinct maximal eigenspaces are distinct. Under the assumption that $\dim H\ge 4k$ we establish that every bijective transformation $f$ of ${\mathcal C}$ preserving the commutativity in both directions is induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator, i.e. there is a unitary or anti-unitary operator $U$ such that $f(A)=UAU^{*}$ for every $A\in {\mathcal C}$. A simple example shows that the condition concerning the dimensions of maximal eigenspaces cannot be omitted.

Max-Cut in Degenerate $H$-Free Graphs
We obtain several lower bounds on the $\textsf{Max-Cut}$ of $d$-degenerate $H$-free graphs. Let $f(m,d,H)$ denote the smallest $\textsf{Max-Cut}$ of an $H$-free $d$-degenerate graph on $m$ edges. We show that $f(m,d,K_r)\ge \left(\frac{1}{2} + d^{-1+Ω(r^{-1})}\right)m$, generalizing a recent work of Carlson, Kolla, and Trevisan. We also give bounds on $f(m,d,H)$ when $H$ is a cycle, odd wheel, or a complete bipartite graph with at most 4 vertices on one side. We also show stronger bounds on $f(m,d,K_r)$ assuming a conjecture of Alon, Bollabas, Krivelevich, and Sudakov (2003). We conjecture that $f(m,d,K_r)= \left( \frac{1}{2} + Θ_r(d^{-1/2}) \right)m$ for every $r\ge 3$, and show that this conjecture implies the ABKS conjecture.

On the semi-proper orientations of graphs
A {\it semi-proper orientation} of a given graph $G$ is a function $(D,w)$ that assigns an orientation $D(e)$ and a positive integer weight $ w(e)$ to each edge $e$ such that for every two adjacent vertices $v$ and $u$, $S_{(D,w)}(v) \neq S_{(D,w)}(u) $, where $S_{(D,w)}(v) $ is the sum of the weights of edges with head $v$ in $D$. The {\it semi-proper orientation number} of a graph $G$, denoted by $\overrightarrowχ_s (G)$, is $ \min_{(D,w)\in Γ} \max_{v\in V(G)} S_{(D,w)}(v) $, where $Γ$ is the set of all semi-proper orientations of $G$. The {\it optimal semi-proper orientation} is a semi-proper orientation $(D,w)$ such that $ \max_{v\in V(G)} S_{(D,w)}(v)= \overrightarrowχ_s (G) $. In this work, we show that every graph $G$ has an optimal semi-proper orientation $(D,w)$ such that the weight of each edge is one or two. Next, we show that determining whether a given planar graph $G$ with $\overrightarrowχ_s (G)=2 $ has an optimal semi-proper orientation $(D,w)$ such that the weight of each edge is one is NP-complete. Finally, we prove that the problem of determining the semi-proper orientation number of planar bipartite graphs is NP-hard.

Arctic curves phenomena for bounded lecture hall Tableaux
Recently the first author and Jang Soo Kim introduced lecture hall tableaux in their study of multivariate little q-Jacobi polynomials. They then enumerated bounded lecture hall tableaux and showed that their enumeration is closely related to standard and semistandard Young tableaux. In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of these bounded tableaux thanks to two other combinatorial models: non intersecting paths on a graph whose faces are squares and pentagons and dimer models on a lattice whose faces are hexagons and octogons. We use the tangent method to investigate the arctic curve in the model of nonintersecting lattice paths with fixed starting points and ending points distributibuted according to some arbitrary piecewise differentiable function. We then study the dimer model and use some ansatz to guess the asymptotics of the inverse of the Kasteleyn matrix confirm the arctic curve computed with the tangent method for two examples.
