The structure of graphs with given number of blocks and the maximum Wiener index
The Wiener index (the distance) of a connected graph is the sum of distances between all pairs of vertices. In this paper, we study the maximum possible value of this invariant among graphs on $n$ vertices with fixed number of blocks $p$. It is known that among graphs on $n$ vertices that have just one block, the $n$-cycle has the largest Wiener index. And the $n$-path, which has $n-1$ blocks, has the maximum Wiener index in the class of graphs on $n$ vertices. We show that among all graphs on $n$ vertices which have $p\ge 2$ blocks, the maximum Wiener index is attained by a graph composed of two cycles joined by a path (here we admit that one or both cycles can be replaced by a single edge, as in the case $p=n-1$ for example).

Induced matchings in strongly biconvex graphs and some algebraic applications
In this paper, motivated by a question posed in \cite{AH}, we introduce strongly biconvex graphs as a subclass of weakly chordal and bipartite graphs. We give a linear time algorithm to find an induced matching for such graphs and we prove that this algorithm indeed gives a maximum induced matching. Applying this algorithm, we provide a strongly biconvex graph whose (monomial) edge ideal does not admit a unique extremal Betti number. Using this constructed graph, we provide an infinite family of the so-called closed graphs (also known as proper interval graphs) whose binomial edge ideals do not have a unique extremal Betti number. This, in particular, answers the aforementioned question in \cite{AH}.

Sequences with almost Poissonian Pair Correlations
Although a generic uniformly distributed sequence has Poissonian pair correlations, only one explicit example has been found up to now. Additionally, it is even known that many classes of uniformly distributed sequences, like van der Corput sequences, Kronecker sequences and LS sequences, do not have Poissonian pair correlations. In this paper, we show that van der Corput sequences and the Kronecker sequence for the golden mean are as close to having Poissonian pair correlations as possible: they both have $α$-pair correlations for all $0 < α< 1$ but not for $α= 1$ which corresponds to Poissonian pair correlations.
Code Design Principles for Ultra-Reliable Random Access with Preassigned Patterns
We study medium access control layer random access under the assumption that the receiver can perform successive interference cancellation, without feedback. During recent years, a number of protocols with impressive error performance have been suggested for this channel model. However, the random nature of these protocols causes an error floor which limits their usability when targeting ultra-reliable communications. In very recent works by Paolini et al. and Boyd et. al., it was shown that if each user employs predetermined combinatorial access patterns, this error floor disappears. In this paper, we develop code design criteria for deterministic random access protocols in the ultra-reliability region, and build codes based on these principles. The suggested design methods are supported by simulations.

Sets with arithmetic progressions are abundant
Furstenberg, Glasscock, Bergelson, Beiglboeck have been studied abundance in arithmatic progression on various large sets like piecewise syndetic, central, thick, etc. but also there are so many sets in which abundance in progression is still unsettled like J-sets, C-sets, D-sets etc. But all of these sets have a common property that they contains arbitrary length of arithmatic progressions. These type of sets are called sets of A.P. rich, we have given an elementary proof of abundance of those sets.

Several transformation formulas involving bilateral basic hypergeometric series
In terms of the analytic continuation method, we prove three transformation formulas involving bilateral basic hypergeometric series. One of them is equivalent to Jouhet's result involving two $_8ψ_8$ series and two $_8φ_7$ series.

Well-quasi-order of plane minors and an application to link diagrams
A plane graph $H$ is a {\em plane minor} of a plane graph $G$ if there is a sequence of vertex and edge deletions, and edge contractions performed on the plane, that takes $G$ to $H$. Motivated by knot theory problems, it has been asked if the plane minor relation is a well-quasi-order. We settle this in the affirmative. We also prove an additional application to knot theory. If $L$ is a link and $D$ is a link diagram, write $D\leadsto L$ if there is a sequence of crossing exchanges and smoothings that takes $D$ to a diagram of $L$. We show that, for each fixed link $L$, there is a polynomial-time algorithm that takes as input a link diagram $D$ and answers whether or not $D\leadsto L$.
Scaling limits for random triangulations on the torus
We study the scaling limit of essentially simple triangulations on the torus. We consider, for every $n\geq 1$, a uniformly random triangulation $G_n$ over the set of (appropriately rooted) essentially simple triangulations on the torus with $n$ vertices. We view $G_n$ as a metric space by endowing its set of vertices with the graph distance denoted by $d_{G_n}$ and show that the random metric space $(V(G_n),n^{-1/4}d_{G_n})$ converges in distribution in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense when $n$ goes to infinity, at least along subsequences, toward a random metric space. One of the crucial steps in the argument is to construct a simple labeling on the map and show its convergence to an explicit scaling limit. We moreover show that this labeling approximates the distance to the root up to a uniform correction of order $o(n^{1/4})$.

On the bar visibility number of complete bipartite graphs
A $t$-bar visibility representation of a graph assigns each vertex up to $t$ horizontal bars in the plane so that two vertices are adjacent if and only if some bar for one vertex can see some bar for the other via an unobstructed vertical channel of positive width. The least $t$ such that $G$ has a $t$-bar visibility representation is the bar visibility number of $G$, denoted by $b(G)$. For the complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$, the lower bound $b(K_{m,n})\ge\lceil{\frac{mn+4}{2m+2n}}\rceil$ from Euler's Formula is well known. We prove that equality holds.

Tensor models with generalized melonic interactions
Tensor models are natural generalizations of matrix models. The interactions and observables in the case of unitary invariant models are generalizations of matrix traces. Some notable interactions in the literature include the melonic ones, the tetrahedral one as well as the planar ones in rank three, or necklaces in even ranks. Here we introduce generalized melonic interactions which generalize the melonic and necklace interactions. We characterize them as tree-like gluings of quartic interactions. We also completely characterize the Feynman graphs which contribute to the large $N$ limit. For a subclass of generalized melonic interactions called totally unbalanced interactions, we prove that the large $N$ limit is Gaussian and therefore the Feynman graphs are in bijection with trees. This result further extends the class of tensor models which fall into the Gaussian universality class. Another key aspect of tensor models with generalized melonic interactions is that they can be written as matrix models without increasing the number of degrees of freedom of the original tensor models. In the case of totally unbalanced interactions, this new matrix model formulation in fact decreases the number of degrees of freedom, meaning that some of the original degrees of freedom are effectively integrated. We then show how the large $N$ Gaussian behavior can be reproduced using a saddle point analysis on those matrix models.
Nonsingular (Vertex-Weighted) Block Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is \emph{nonsingular (singular)} if its adjacency matrix $A(G)$ is nonsingular (singular). In this article, we consider the nonsingularity of block graphs, i.e., graphs in which every block is a clique. Extending the problem, we characterize nonsingular vertex-weighted block graphs in terms of reduced vertex-weighted graphs resulting after successive deletion and contraction of pendant blocks. Special cases where nonsingularity of block graphs may be directly determined are discussed.
Percolating sets in bootstrap percolation on the Hamming graphs
For any integer $r\geqslant0$, the $r$-neighbor bootstrap percolation on a graph is an activation process of the vertices. The process starts with some initially activated vertices and then, in each round, any inactive vertex with at least $r$ active neighbors becomes activated. A set of initially activated vertices leading to the activation of all vertices is said to be a percolating set. Denote the minimum size of a percolating set in the $r$-neighbor bootstrap percolation process on a graph $G$ by $m(G, r)$. In this paper, we present upper and lower bounds on $m(K_n^d, r)$, where $K_n^d$ is the Cartesian product of $d$ copies of the complete graph $K_n$ which is referred as the Hamming graph. Among other results, we show that $m(K_n^d, r)=\frac{1+o(1)}{(d+1)!}r^d$ when both $r$ and $d$ go to infinity with $r<n$ and $d=o(\!\sqrt{r})$.

A new face iterator for polyhedra and more general finite locally branched lattices
Published in Discrete Comput Geom (2022) • View Publication • BIB
We discuss a new memory-efficient depth-first algorithm and its implementation that iterates over all elements of a finite locally branched lattice. This algorithm can be applied to face lattices of polyhedra and to various generalizations such as finite polyhedral complexes and subdivisions of manifolds, extended tight spans and closed sets of matroids. Its practical implementation is very fast compared to state-of-the-art implementations of previously considered algorithms. Based on recent work of Bruns, García-Sánchez, O'Neill and Wilburne, we apply this algorithm to prove Wilf's conjecture for all numerical semigroups of multiplicity 19 by iterating through the faces of the Kunz cone and identifying the possible bad faces and then checking that these do not yield counterexamples to Wilf's conjecture.

On the notion of effective impedance
Published in Operators and Matrices, Volume 14, Number 3 (2020), 723--741 • View Publication • BIB
It is known that electrical networks with resistors are related to the Laplace operator and random walk on weighted graphs. In this paper we consider more general electrical networks with coils, capacitors, and resistors. We give two mathematical models of such networks: complex-weighted graphs and graphs with weight from the ordered field of rational functions. The notion of effective impedance in both approaches is defined.
An insertion algorithm on multiset partitions with applications to diagram algebras
Published in J. Algebra 557 no. 1, (2020), 97-128 • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm to the insertion of two row arrays of multisets. This generalization leads to new enumerative results that have representation theoretic interpretations as decompositions of centralizer algebras and the spaces they act on. In addition, restrictions on the multisets lead to further identities and representation theory analogues. For instance, we obtain a bijection between words of length $k$ with entries in $[n]$ and pairs of tableaux of the same shape with one being a standard Young tableau of size $n$ and the other being a standard multiset tableau of content $[k]$. We also obtain an algorithm from partition diagrams to pairs of a standard tableau and a standard multiset tableau of the same shape, which has the remarkable property that it is well-behaved with respect to restricting a representation to a subalgebra. This insertion algorithm matches recent representation-theoretic results of Halverson and Jacobson.

Arboretum for a generalization of Ramanujan polynomials
In this paper, we expand on the work of Guo and Zeng from 2007 on a generalization of the Ramanujan polynomials and planar trees. We manage to find combinatorial interpretations of this family of polynomials in terms of Greg trees, Cayley trees, and planar trees by constructing bijections that preserve relevant tree statistics.

The average simplex cardinality of a finite abstract simplicial complex
We study the average simplex cardinality Dim^+(G) = sum_x |x|/(|G|+1) of a finite abstract simplicial complex G. The functional is a homomorphism from the monoid of simplicial complexes to the rationals: the formula Dim^+(G + H) = Dim^+(G) + Dim^+(H) holds for the join + similarly as for the augmented inductive dimension dim^+(G) = dim(G)+1 where dim is the inductive dimension dim(G) = 1+ sum_x dim(S(x))/|G| with unit sphere S(x) (a recent theorem of Betre and Salinger). In terms of the generating function f(t) = 1+v_0 t + v_1 t^2 + ... +v_d t^(d+1) defined by the f-vector (v_0,v_1, \dots) of G for which f(-1) is the genus 1-X(G) with Euler characteristic X and f(1)=|G|+1 is the augmented number of simplices, the average cardinality is the logarithmic derivative Dim^+(f) = f'(1)/f(1) of f at 1. Beside introducing the average cardinality and establishing its compatibility with arithmetic, we prove two results: 1) the inequality dim^+(G)/2 <= Dim^+(G) with equality for complete complexes. 2) the limit C_d of Dim^+(G_n) for n to infinity is the same for any initial complex G_0 of maximal dimension d and the constant c_d is explicitly given in terms of the Perron-Frobenius eigenfunction of the universal Barycentric refinement operator and is for positive d always a rational number in the open interval ((d+1)/2,d+1).

Partitioning sparse graphs into an independent set and a graph with bounded size components
We study the problem of partitioning the vertex set of a given graph so that each part induces a graph with components of bounded order; we are also interested in restricting these components to be paths. In particular, we say a graph $G$ admits an $({\cal I}, {\cal O}_k)$-partition if its vertex set can be partitioned into an independent set and a set that induces a graph with components of order at most $k$. We prove that every graph $G$ with $\operatorname{mad}(G)<\frac 52$ admits an $({\cal I}, {\cal O}_3)$-partition. This implies that every planar graph with girth at least $10$ can be partitioned into an independent set and a set that induces a graph whose components are paths of order at most 3. We also prove that every graph $G$ with $\operatorname{mad}(G) < \frac{8k}{3k+1} = \frac{8}{3}\left( 1 - \frac{1}{3k+1} \right)$ admits an $({\cal I}, {\cal O}_k)$-partition. This implies that every planar graph with girth at least $9$ can be partitioned into an independent set and a set that induces a graph whose components are paths of order at most 9.

An infinite-dimensional version of Gowers' $\mathrm{FIN}_{\pm k}$ theorem
We prove an infinite-dimensional version of an approximate Ramsey theorem of Gowers, initially used to show that every Lipschitz function on the unit sphere of $c_0$ is oscillation stable. To do so, we use the theory of ultra-Ramsey spaces developed by Todorcevic in order to obtain an Ellentuck-type theorem for the space of all infinite block sequences in $\mathrm{FIN}_{\pm k}$.

The Pseudoforest analogue for the Strong Nine Dragon Tree Conjecture is True
We prove that for any positive integers $k$ and $d$, if a graph $G$ has maximum average degree at most $2k + \frac{2d}{d+k+1}$, then $G$ decomposes into $k+1$ pseudoforests $C_{1},\ldots,C_{k+1}$ such that there is an $i$ such that for every connected component $C$ of $C_{i}$, we have that $e(C) \leq d$.
