Arc-disjoint Strong Spanning Subdigraphs of Semicomplete Compositions
A strong arc decomposition of a digraph $D=(V,A)$ is a decomposition of its arc set $A$ into two disjoint subsets $A_1$ and $A_2$ such that both of the spanning subdigraphs $D_1=(V,A_1)$ and $D_2=(V,A_2)$ are strong. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\cup_{i=1}^t V(H_i)=\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set \[ \left(\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i) \right) \cup \left( \cup_{u_iu_p\in A(T)} \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p} \mid 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\} \right). \] We obtain a characterization of digraph compositions $Q=T[H_1,\dots H_t]$ which have a strong arc decomposition when $T$ is a semicomplete digraph and each $H_i$ is an arbitrary digraph. Our characterization generalizes a characterization by Bang-Jensen and Yeo (2003) of semicomplete digraphs with a strong arc decomposition and solves an open problem by Sun, Gutin and Ai (2018) on strong arc decompositions of digraph compositions $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ in which $T$ is semicomplete and each $H_i$ is arbitrary. Our proofs are constructive and imply the existence of a polynomial algorithm for constructing a \good{} decomposition of a digraph $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$, with $T$ semicomplete, whenever such a decomposition exists.
Partial domination of maximal outerplanar graphs
Several domination results have been obtained for maximal outerplanar graphs (mops). The classical domination problem is to minimize the size of a set $S$ of vertices of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ such that $G - N[S]$, the graph obtained by deleting the closed neighborhood of $S$, is null. A classical result of Chvátal is that the minimum size is at most $n/3$ if $G$ is a mop. Here we consider a modification by allowing $G - N[S]$ to have isolated vertices and isolated edges only. Let $ι_1(G)$ denote the size of a smallest set $S$ for which this is achieved. We show that if $G$ is a mop on $n \geq 5$ vertices, then $ι_{1}(G) \leq n/5$. We also show that if $n_2$ is the number of vertices of degree $2$, then $ι_{1}(G) \leq \frac{n+n_2}{6}$ if $n_2 \leq \frac{n}{3}$, and $ι_1(G) \leq \frac{n-n_2}{3}$ otherwise. We show that these bounds are best possible.
On graphs with no induced five-vertex path or paraglider
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,\,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. For a positive integer $t$, $P_t$ is the chordless path on $t$ vertices. A paraglider is the graph that consists of a chorless cycle $C_4$ plus a vertex adjacent to three vertices of the $C_4$. In this paper, we study the structure of ($P_5$, paraglider)-free graphs, and show that every such graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\le \lceil \frac{3}{2}ω(G) \rceil$, where $χ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are the chromatic number and clique number of $G$, respectively. Our bound is attained by the complement of the Clebsch graph on 16 vertices. More strongly, we completely characterize all the ($P_5$, paraglider)-free graphs $G$ that satisfies $χ(G)> \frac{3}{2}ω(G)$. We also construct an infinite family of ($P_5$, paraglider)-free graphs such that every graph $G$ in the family has $χ(G)=\lceil \frac{3}{2}ω(G) \rceil-1$. This shows that our upper bound is optimal up to an additive constant and that there is no $(\frac{3}{2}-ε)$-approximation algorithm to the chromatic number of ($P_5$, paraglider)-free graphs for any $ε>0$.

We show that there exist convex $n$-gons $P$ and $Q$ such that the largest convex polygon in the Minkowski sum $P+Q$ has size $Θ(n\log n)$. This matches an upper bound of Tiwary.
Pentagonal Subdivision
We develop a theory of simple pentagonal subdivision of quadrilateral tilings, on orientable as well as non-orientable surfaces. Then we apply the theory to answer questions related to pentagonal tilings of surfaces, especially those related to pentagonal or double pentagonal subdivisions.
The Toucher-Isolator game
We introduce a new positional game called `Toucher-Isolator', which is a quantitative version of a Maker-Breaker type game. The playing board is the set of edges of a given graph G, and the two players, Toucher and Isolator, claim edges alternately. The aim of Toucher is to `touch' as many vertices as possible (i.e. to maximise the number of vertices that are incident to at least one of her chosen edges), and the aim of Isolator is to minimise the number of vertices that are so touched.
We analyse the number of untouched vertices u(G) at the end of the game when both Toucher and Isolator play optimally, obtaining results both for general graphs and for particularly interesting classes of graphs, such as cycles, paths, trees, and k-regular graphs. We also provide tight examples.
Cop number of $2K_2$-free graphs
We prove that the cop number of a $2K_2$-free graph is at most $2$ if it has diameter $3$ or does not have an induced cycle of length $k$, where $k \ \in \{3,4,5\}$. We conjecture that the cop number of every $2K_2$-free graph is at most $2$.
Quantum Q-systems and fermionic sums -- the non-simply laced case
In this paper, we seek to prove the equality of the $q$-graded fermionic sums conjectured by Hatayama et al. in its full generality, by extending the results of Di Francesco and Kedem to the non-simply laced case. To this end, we will derive explicit expressions for the quantum $Q$-system relations, which are quantum cluster mutations that correspond to the classical $Q$-system relations, and write the identity of the $q$-graded fermionic sums as a constant term identity. As an application, we will show that these quantum $Q$-system relations are consistent with the short exact sequence of the Feigin-Loktev fusion product of Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules obtained by Chari and Venkatesh.
Distance matrices of a tree: two more invariants, and in a unified framework

Graham-Pollak showed that for $D = D_T$ the distance matrix of a tree $T$, det$(D)$ depends only on its number of edges. Several other variants of $D$, including directed/multiplicative/$q$- versions were studied, and always, det$(D)$ depends only on the edge-data.
We introduce a general framework for bi-directed weighted trees, with threefold significance. First, we improve on state-of-the-art for all known variants, even in the classical Graham-Pollak case: we delete arbitrary pendant nodes (and more general subsets) from the rows/columns of $D$, and show these minors do not depend on the tree-structure.
Second, our setting unifies all known variants (with entries in a commutative ring). We further compute $D^{-1}$ in closed form, extending a result of Graham-Lovasz [Adv. Math. 1978] and answering an open question of Bapat-Lal-Pati [Lin. Alg. Appl. 2006] in greater generality.
Third, we compute a second function of the matrix $D$: the sum of all its cofactors, cof$(D)$. This was worked out in the simplest setting by Graham-Hoffman-Hosoya (1978), but is relatively unexplored for other variants. We prove a stronger result, in our general setting, by computing cof$(.)$ for minors as above, and showing these too depend only on the edge-data.
Finally, we show our setting is the "most general possible", in that with more freedom in the edgeweights, det$(D)$ and cof$(D)$ depend on the tree structure. In a sense, this completes the study of the invariants det$(D_T)$, cof$(D_T)$ for trees $T$ with edge-data in a commutative ring.
Moreover: for a bi-directed graph $G$ we prove multiplicative Graham-Hoffman-Hosoya type formulas for det$(D_G)$, cof$(D_G)$, $D_G^{-1}$. We then show how this subsumes their 1978 result. The final section introduces and computes a third, novel invariant for trees and a Graham-Hoffman-Hosoya type result for our "most general" distance matrix $D_T$.
A species approach to Rota's twelvefold way
An introduction to Joyal's theory of combinatorial species is given and through it an alternative view of Rota's twelvefold way emerges.
Characterising bimodal collections of sets in finite groups
A collection of disjoint subsets ${\cal A}=\{A_1,A_2,\dotsc,A_m\}$ of a finite abelian group is said to have the \emph{bimodal} property if, for any non-zero group element $δ$, either $δ$ never occurs as a difference between an element of $A_i$ and an element of some other set $A_j$, or else for every element $a_i$ in $A_i$ there is an element $a_j\in A_j$ for some $j\neq i$ such that $a_i-a_j=δ$. This property arises in various familiar situations, such as the cosets of a fixed subgroup or in a group partition, and has applications to the construction of optimal algebraic manipulation detection (AMD) codes. In this paper, we obtain a structural characterisation for bimodal collections of sets.

Using topological circles in the Freudenthal compactification of a graph as infinite cycles, we extend to locally finite graphs a result of Oberly and Sumner on the Hamiltonicity of finite graphs. This answers a question of Stein, and gives a sufficient condition for Hamiltonicity in locally finite graphs.

Among the well-known sufficient degree conditions for the Hamiltonicity of a finite graph, the condition of Asratian and Khachatrian is the weakest and thus gives the strongest result. Diestel conjectured that it should extend to locally finite infinite graphs~$G$, in that the same condition implies that the Freudenthal compactification of $G$ contains a circle through all its vertices and ends. We prove Diestel's conjecture for claw-free graphs.
The minimum value of the Colless index
The Colless index is one of the oldest and most widely used balance indices for rooted bifurcating trees. Despite its popularity, its minimum value on the space $\mathcal{T}_n$ of rooted bifurcating trees with $n$ leaves is only known when $n$ is a power of 2. In this paper we fill this gap in the literature, by providing a formula that computes, for each $n$, the minimum Colless index on $\mathcal{T}_n$, and characterizing those trees where this minimum value is reached.
Mixing properties of colorings of the $\mathbb{Z}^d$ lattice
We study and classify proper $q$-colorings of the $\mathbb Z^d$ lattice, identifying three regimes where different combinatorial behavior holds: (1) When $q\le d+1$, there exist frozen colorings, that is, proper $q$-colorings of $\mathbb Z^d$ which cannot be modified on any finite subset. (2) We prove a strong list-coloring property which implies that, when $q\ge d+2$, any proper $q$-coloring of the boundary of a box of side length $n \ge d+2$ can be extended to a proper $q$-coloring of the entire box. (3) When $q\geq 2d+1$, the latter holds for any $n \ge 1$. Consequently, we classify the space of proper $q$-colorings of the $\mathbb Z^d$ lattice by their mixing properties.
On some generalizations of the property $B$-problem of an $n$-uniform hypergraph
The extremal problem of hypergraph colorings related to Erdős--Hajnal property $B$-problem is considered. Let $k$ be a natural number. The problem is to find the value of $m_k(n)$ equal to the minimal number of edges in an $n$-uniform hypergraph not admitting $2$-colorings of the vertex set such that every edge of the hypergraph contains at least $k$ vertices of each color. In this paper we obtain new lower bounds for $m_k(n).$
Testing isomorphism of circular-arc graphs in polynomial time
A graph is said to be circular-arc if the vertices can be associated with arcs of a circle so that two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding arcs overlap. It is proved that the isomorphism of circular-arc graphs can be tested by the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm after individualization of two vertices.
Spectra and eigenspaces of arbitrary lifts of graphs
We describe, in a very explicit way, a method for determining the spectra and bases of all the corresponding eigenspaces of arbitrary lifts of graphs (regular or not).

In this paper we give a fast algorithm to generate all partitions of a positive integer $n$. Integer partitions may be encoded as either ascending or descending compositions for the purposes of systematic generation. It is known that the ascending composition generation algorithm is substantially more efficient than its descending composition counterpart. Using tree structures for storing the partitions of integers, we develop a new ascending composition generation algorithm which is substantially more efficient than the algorithms from the literature.
The Multiset Partition Algebra
We introduce the multiset partition algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$, where $F$ is a field of characteristic $0$ and $k$ is a positive integer. When $ξ$ is specialized to a positive integer $n$, we establish the Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of resulting algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $S_n$ on $\text{Sym}^k(F^n)$. The construction of $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ generalizes to any vector $λ$ of non-negative integers yielding the algebra $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$ so that there is Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$ and $S_n$ on $\text{Sym}^λ(F^n)$. We find the generating function for the multiplicity of each irreducible representation of $S_n$ in $\text{Sym}^λ(F^n)$, as $λ$ varies, in terms of a plethysm of Schur functions. As consequences we obtain an indexing set for the irreducible representations of $\mathcal{MP}_k(n)$, and the generating function for the multiplicity of an irreducible polynomial representation of $GL_n(F)$ when restricted to $S_n$. We show that $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ embeds inside the partition algebra $\mathcal{P}_{|λ|}(ξ)$. Using this embedding, over $F$, we prove that $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ is a cellular algebra, and $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ is semisimple when $ξ$ is not an integer or $ξ$ is an integer such that $ξ\geq 2|λ|-1$. We give an insertion algorithm based on Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence realizing the decomposition of $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$ as $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)\times \mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$-module.
