Sprinkling a few random edges doubles the power
Published • View Publication • BIB
A seminal result by Komlós, Sarközy, and Szemerédi states that if a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices has minimum degree at least $kn/(k + 1)$, for some $k \in \mathbb{N}$ and $n$ sufficiently large, then it contains the $k$-th power of a Hamilton cycle. This is easily seen to be the largest power of a Hamilton cycle one can guarantee, given such a minimum degree assumption. Following a recent trend of studying effects of adding random edges to a dense graph, the model known as the randomly perturbed graph, Dudek, Reiher, Ruciński, and Schacht showed that if the minimum degree is at least $kn/(k + 1) + αn$, for any constant $α> 0$, then adding $O(n)$ random edges on top almost surely results in a graph which contains the $(k + 1)$-st power of a Hamilton cycle. We show that the effect of these random edges is significantly stronger, namely that one can almost surely find the $(2k + 1)$-st power. This is the largest power one can guarantee in such a setting.

A formula for the partition function that "counts"
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 20 (2016) 301--316 • View Publication • BIB
We derive a combinatorial multisum expression for the number $D(n,k)$ of partitions of $n$ with Durfee square of order $k$. An immediate corollary is therefore a combinatorial formula for $p(n)$, the number of partitions of $n$. We then study $D(n,k)$ as a quasipolynomial. We consider the natural polynomial approximation $\tilde{D}(n,k)$ to the quasipolynomial representation of $D(n,k)$. Numerically, the sum $\sum_{1\leq k \leq \sqrt{n}} \tilde{D}(n,k)$ appears to be extremely close to the initial term of the Hardy--Ramanujan--Rademacher convergent series for $p(n)$.

Colouring of generalized signed planar graphs
Assume $G$ is a graph. We view $G$ as a symmetric digraph, in which each edge $uv$ of $G$ is replaced by a pair of opposite arcs $e=(u,v)$ and $e^{-1}=(v,u)$. Assume $S$ is an inverse closed subset of permutations of positive integers. We say $G$ is $S$-$k$-colourable if for any mapping $σ: E(G) \to S$ with $σ(x,y) = (σ(y,x))^{-1}$, there is a mapping $f: V(G) \to [k]=\{1,2, \ldots, k\}$ such that for each arc $e=(x,y)$, $σ_e(f(x)) \ne f(y)$. The concept of $S$-$k$-colouring is a common generalization of many colouring concepts, including $k$-colouring, signed $k$-colouring defined by Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera, signed $k$-colouring defined by Kang and Steffen, correspondence $k$-colouring defined by Dvořák and Postle, and group colouring defined by Jaeger, Linial, Payan and Tarsi. We are interested in the problem as for which subset $S$ of $S_4$, every planar graph is $S$-colourable. Such a subset $S$ is called good. The famous four colour theorem is equivalent to say that $S=\{id\}$ is good. There are two conjectures on signed graph colouring, one is equivalent to $S=\{id, (12)(34)\}$ be good and the other is equivalent to $S=\{id, (12)\}$ be good. We say two subsets $S$ and $S'$ of $S_k$ are conjugate if there is a permutation $π\in S_k$ such that $S'= \{πσπ^{-1}: σ\in S\}$. This paper proves that if $S$ is a good subset of $S_4$ containing $id$, then $S$ is conjugate to a subset of $\{id, (12), (34), (12)(34)\}$. However, it remains an open problem if there is any good subset $S$ which contains $id$ and has cardinality $|S| \ge 2$. We also prove that $S=\{(12),(13),(23),(123),(132)\}$ is not good.

Hardness results for rainbow disconnection of graphs
Let $G$ be a nontrivial connected, edge-colored graph. An edge-cut $S$ of $G$ is called a rainbow cut if no two edges in $S$ are colored with a same color. An edge-coloring of $G$ is a rainbow disconnection coloring if for every two distinct vertices $s$ and $t$ of $G$, there exists a rainbow cut $S$ in $G$ such that $s$ and $t$ belong to different components of $G\setminus S$. For a connected graph $G$, the {\it rainbow disconnection number} of $G$, denoted by $rd(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of colors such that $G$ has a rainbow disconnection coloring by using this number of colors. In this paper, we show that for a connected graph $G$, computing $rd(G)$ is NP-hard. In particular, it is already NP-complete to decide if $rd(G)=3$ for a connected cubic graph. Moreover, we prove that for a given edge-colored (with an unbounded number of colors) connected graph $G$ it is NP-complete to decide whether $G$ is rainbow disconnected.

A refinement of choosability of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Assume $k$ is a positive integer, $λ=\{k_1, k_2, \ldots, k_q\}$ is a partition of $k$ and $G$ is a graph. A $λ$-list assignment of $G$ is a $k$-list assignment $L$ of $G$ such that the colour set $\cup_{v\in V(G)}L(v)$ can be partitioned into $q$ subsets $C_1 \cup C_2 \ldots \cup C_q$ and for each vertex $v$ of $G$, $|L(v) \cap C_i| \ge k_i$. We say $G$ is $λ$-choosable if for each $λ$-list assignment $L$ of $G$, $G$ is $L$-colourable. It follows from the definition that if $λ=\{k\}$, then $λ$-choosable is the same as $k$-choosable, if $λ=\{1,1,\ldots, 1\}$, then $λ$-choosable is equivalent to $k$-colourable. For the other partitions of $k$ sandwiched between $\{k\}$ and $\{1,1,\ldots, 1\}$ in terms of refinements, $λ$-choosability reveals a complex hierarchy of colourability of graphs. We prove that for two partitions $λ, λ'$ of $k$, every $λ$-choosable graph is $λ'$-choosable if and only if $λ'$ is a refinement of $λ$. Then we concentrate on $λ$-choosability of planar graphs for partitions $λ$ of $4$. Several conjectures concerning colouring of generalized signed planar graphs are proposed and relations between these conjectures and list colouring conjectures for planar graphs are explored. In particular, it is proved that a conjecture of Kündgen and Ramamurthi on list colouring of planar graphs is implied by the conjecture that every planar graph is $\{2,2\}$-choosable, and also implied by the conjecture of Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera which asserts that every planar graph is signed MRS-$4$-colourable, and that a conjecture of Kang and Steffen asserting that every planar graph is signed KS-$4$-colourable implies that every planar graph is $\{1,1,2\}$-choosable.

Cyclotomic factors of necklace polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We observe that the necklace polynomials $M_d(x) = \frac{1}{d}\sum_{e\mid d}μ(e)x^{d/e}$ are highly reducible over $\mathbb{Q}$ with many cyclotomic factors. Furthermore, the sequence $Φ_d(x) - 1$ of shifted cyclotomic polynomials exhibits a qualitatively similar phenomenon, and it is often the case that $M_d(x)$ and $Φ_d(x) - 1$ have many common cyclotomic factors. We explain these cyclotomic factors of $M_d(x)$ and $Φ_d(x) - 1$ in terms of what we call the \emph{$d$th necklace operator}. Finally, we show how these cyclotomic factors correspond to certain hyperplane arrangements in finite abelian groups.

Branching rules for Unitary and Symplectic matrices
Published in Communications in algebra, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
This paper concerns the enumeration of simultaneous conjugacy classes of tuples of commuting unitary matrices and of commuting symplectic matrices over a finite field $\mathbf{F}_q$ of odd size. For any given conjugacy class, the orbits for the action of its centralizer group on itself by conjugation are called branches. We determine the branching rules for the unitary groups $U_2(\mathbf{F}_q), U_3(\mathbf{F}_q)$, and for the symplectic groups $Sp_2(\mathbf{F}_q), Sp_4(\mathbf{F}_q)$.

Additive Approximation of Generalized Turán Questions
Published • View Publication • BIB
For graphs $G$ and $T$, and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ let $\mathrm{ex}(G,T,\mathcal{F})$ denote the maximum possible number of copies of $T$ in an $\mathcal{F}$-free subgraph of $G$. We investigate the algorithmic aspects of calculating and estimating this function. We show that for every graph $T$, finite family $\mathcal{F}$ and constant $ε>0$ there is a polynomial time algorithm that approximates $\mathrm{ex}(G,T,\mathcal{F})$ for an input graph $G$ on $n$ vertices up to an additive error of $εn^{v(T)}$. We also consider the possibility of a better approximation, proving several positive and negative results, and suggesting a conjecture on the exact relation between $T$ and $\mathcal{F}$ for which no significantly better approximation can be found in polynomial time unless $P=NP$.
Short note on Randić energy
In this paper, we consider the Randić energy $RE$ of simple connected graphs. We provide upper bounds for $RE$ in terms of the number of vertices and the nullity of the graph. We present families of graphs that satisfy the Conjecture proposed by Gutman, Furtula and Bozkurt \cite{Gutman1} about the maximal RE. For example, we show that starlikes of odd order satisfy the conjecture.

Computing Convex Hulls in the Affine Building of SL_d
Published • View Publication • BIB
We describe an algorithm for computing the convex hull of a finite collection of points in the affine building of SL_d(K), for K a field with discrete valuation. These convex hulls describe the relations among a finite collection of invertible matrices over K. As a consequence, we bound the dimension of the tropical projective space needed to realize the convex hull as a tropical polytope.

On the Bound of Inverse Images of a Polynomial Map
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $f_1(x),\ldots,f_n(x)$ be some polynomials. The upper bound on the number of $x\in\mathbb F_p$ such that $f_1(x),\ldots,f_n(x)$ are roots of unit of order $t$ is obtained. This bound generalize the bound of the paper \cite{V-S} to the case of polynomials of degrees greater than one. The bound is obtained over fields of positive characteristic and over the complex field.
Defining rough sets using tolerances compatible with an equivalence
Published in Information Sciences 496 (2019) 264-283 • View Publication • BIB
We consider tolerances $T$ compatible with an equivalence $E$ on $U$, meaning that the relational product $E \circ T$ is included in $T$. We present the essential properties of $E$-compatible tolerances and study rough approximations defined by such $E$ and $T$. We consider rough set pairs $(X_E,X^T)$, where the lower approximation $X_E$ is defined as is customary in rough set theory, but $X^T$ allows more elements to be possibly in $X$ than $X^E$. Motivating examples of $E$-compatible tolerances are given, and the essential lattice-theoretical properties of the ordered set of rough sets $\{ (X_E,X^T) \mid X \subseteq U\}$ are established.
A logarithmic bound for the chromatic number of the associahedron
We show that the chromatic number of the $n$-dimensional associahedron grows at most logarithmically with $n$, improving a bound from and proving a conjecture of Fabila-Monroy et al. (2009).
Midrange crossing constants for graphs classes
For positive integers $n$ and $e$, let $κ(n,e)$ be the minimum crossing number (the standard planar crossing number) taken over all graphs with $n$ vertices and at least $e$ edges. Pach, Spencer and Tóth [Discrete and Computational Geometry 24 623--644, (2000)] showed that $κ(n,e) n^2/e^3$ tends to a positive constant (called midrange crossing constant) as $n\to \infty$ and $n \ll e \ll n^2$, proving a conjecture of Erdős and Guy. In this note, we extend their proof to show that the midrange crossing constant exists for graph classes that satisfy a certain set of graph properties. As a corollary, we show that the the midrange crossing constant exists for the family of bipartite graphs. All these results have their analogues for rectilinear crossing numbers.

A Categorification of the Vandermonde Determinant
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the spirit of Bar Natan's construction of Khovanov homology, we give a categorification of the Vandermonde determinant. Given a sequence of positive integers $\vec{x}=(x_1,...,x_n)$, we construct a commutative diagram in the shape of the Bruhat order on $S_n$ whose nodes are colored smoothings of the $2$-strand torus link $T_{2,n}$, and whose arrows are colored cobordisms. An application of a TQFT to this diagram yields a chain complex whose Euler characteristic is the Vandermonde determinant evaluated at $\vec{x}$. A generalization to arbitrary link diagrams is given, producing categorifications of certain generalized Vandermonde determinants. We also address functoriality of this construction.

The Zero-Difference Properties of Functions and Their Applications
A function $f$ from an Abelian group $(A,+)$ to an Abelian group $(B,+)$ is $(n, m, S)$ zero-difference (ZD), if $S=\{λ_α\mid α\in A\setminus\{0\}\}$ where $n=|A|$, $m=|f(A)|$ and $λ_α=|\{x \in A \mid f(x+α)=f(x)\}|$. A function is called zero-difference balanced (ZDB) if $S=\{λ\}$ where $λ$ is a constant number. ZDB functions have many good applications. However it is point out that many known zero-difference balanced functions are already given in the language of partitioned difference family (PDF). The problem that whether zero-difference ``not balanced" functions still have good applications as ZDB functions, is investigated in this paper. By using the change point technic, zero-difference functions with good applications are constructed from known ZDB functions. Then optimal difference systems of sets (DSS) and optimal frequency-hopping sequences (FHS) are obtained with new parameters. Furthermore the sufficient and necessary conditions of these objects being optimal, are given.

Rota-Baxter operators on a sum of fields
Published in Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, vol. 19, No. 06, 2050118 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
We count the number of all Rota-Baxter operators on a finite direct sum $A = F\oplus F\oplus \ldots \oplus F$ of fields and count all of them up to conjugation with an automorphism. We also study Rota-Baxter operators on $A$ corresponding to a decomposition of $A$ into a direct vector space sum of two subalgebras. We show that every algebra structure induced on $A$ by a Rota-Baxter of nonzero weight is isomorphic to $A$.

Avoiding conjugacy classes on the 5-letter alphabet

We construct an infinite word $w$ over the $5$-letter alphabet such that for every factor $f$ of $w$ of length at least two, there exists a cyclic permutation of $f$ that is not a factor of $w$. In other words, $w$ does not contain a non-trivial conjugacy class. This proves the conjecture in Gamard et al. [TCS 2018]
