A Boolean Functions Theoretic Approach to Quantum Hypergraph States and Entanglement
The hypergraph states are pure multipartite quantum states corresponding to a hypergraph. It is an equal superposition of the states belonging to the computational basis. Given any hypergraph, we can construct a hypergraph state determined by a Boolean function. In contrast, we can find a hypergraph, corresponding to a Boolean function. This investigation develops a number of combinatorial structures concerned with the hypergraph states. For instance, the elements of the computational basis generate a lattice. The chains and antichains in this lattice assist us to find the equation of the Boolean function explicitly as well as to find a hypergraph. In addition, we investigate the entanglement property of the hypergraph states in terms of their combinatorial structures. We demonstrate several classes of hypergraphs, such that every cut of equal length on the corresponding hypergraph states has an equal amount of entanglement.

The stability of finite sets in dyadic groups

We show that there is an absolute $c>0$ such that any subset of $\mathbb{F}_2^\infty$ of size $N$ is $O(N^{1-c})$-stable in the sense of Terry and Wolf. By contrast a size $N$ arithmetic progression in the integers is not $N$-stable.

Abelian groups are polynomially stable
Published • View Publication • BIB
In recent years, there has been a considerable amount of interest in stability of equations and their corresponding groups. Here, we initiate the systematic study of the quantitative aspect of this theory. We develop a novel method, inspired by the Ornstein-Weiss quasi-tiling technique, to prove that abelian groups are polynomially stable with respect to permutations, under the normalized Hamming metrics on the groups $\operatorname{Sym}(n)$. In particular, this means that there exists $D\geq 1$ such that for $A,B\in \operatorname{Sym}(n)$, if $AB$ is $δ$-close to $BA$, then $A$ and $B$ are $ε$-close to a commuting pair of permutations, where $ε\leq O(δ^{1/D})$. We also observe a property-testing reformulation of this result, yielding efficient testers for certain permutation properties.

Action convergence of operators and graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a new approach to graph limit theory which unifies and generalizes the two most well developed directions, namely dense graph limits (even the more general $L^p$ limits) and Benjamini--Schramm limits (even in the stronger local-global setting). We illustrate by examples that this new framework provides a rich limit theory with natural limit objects for graphs of intermediate density. Moreover, it provides a limit theory for bounded operators (called $P$-operators) of the form $L^\infty(Ω)\to L^1(Ω)$ for probability spaces $Ω$. We introduce a metric to compare $P$-operators (for example finite matrices) even if they act on different spaces. We prove a compactness result which implies that in appropriate norms, limits of uniformly bounded $P$-operators can again be represented by $P$-operators. We show that limits of operators representing graphs are self-adjoint, positivity-preserving $P$-operators called graphops. Graphons, $L^p$ graphons and graphings (known from graph limit theory) are special examples for graphops. We describe a new point of view on random matrix theory using our operator limit framework.

On total regularity of mixed graphs with order close to the Moore bound
Published • View Publication • BIB
The undirected degree/diameter and degree/girth problems and their directed analogues have been studied for many decades in the search for efficient network topologies. Recently such questions have received much attention in the setting of mixed graphs, i.e. networks that admit both undirected \emph{edges} and directed \emph{arcs}. The degree/diameter problem for mixed graphs asks for the largest possible order of a network with diameter $k$, maximum undirected degree $\leq r$ and maximum directed out-degree $\leq z$. It is also of interest to find smallest possible $k$-geodetic mixed graphs with minimum undirected degree $\geq r$ and minimum directed out-degree $\geq z$. A simple counting argument reveals the existence of a natural bound, the \emph{Moore bound}, on the order of such graphs; a graph that meets this limit is a \emph{mixed Moore graph}. Mixed Moore graphs can exist only for $k = 2$ and even in this case it is known that they are extremely rare. It is therefore of interest to search for graphs with order one away from the Moore bound. Such graphs must be out-regular; a much more difficult question is whether they must be totally regular. For $k = 2$, we answer this question in the affirmative, thereby resolving an open problem stated in a recent paper of López and Miret. We also present partial results for larger $k$. We finally put these results to practical use by proving the uniqueness of a 2-geodetic mixed graph with order exceeding the Moore bound by one.

Lagrangian densities of hypergraph cycles
The Lagrangian density of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $F$ is $r!$ multiplying the supremum of the Lagrangians of all $F$-free $r$-uniform hypergraphs. For an $r$-graph $H$ with $t$ vertices, it is clear that $π_λ(H)\ge r!λ{(K_{t-1}^r)}$. We say that an $r$-unform hypergraph $H$ with $t$ vertices is perfect if $π_λ(H)= r!λ{(K_{t-1}^r)}$. A theorem of Motzkin-Straus implies that all $2$-uniform graphs are perfect. It is interesting to explore what kind of hypergraphs are perfect. A hypergraph is linear if any 2 edges have at most 1 vertex in common. We propose the following conjecture: (1) For $r\ge 3$, there exists $n$ such that a linear $r$-unofrm hypergraph with at least $n$ vertices is perfect. (2) For $r\ge 3$, there exists $n$ such that if $G, H$ are perfect $r$-uniform hypergraphs with at least $n$ vertices, then $G\bigsqcup H$ is perfect. Regarding this conjecture, we obtain a partial result: Let $S_{2,t}=\{123,124,125,126,...,12(t+2)\}$. (An earlier result of Sidorenko states that $S_{2,t}$ is perfect \cite{Sidorenko-89}.) Let $H$ be a perfect $3$-graph with $s$ vertices. Then $F=S_{2,t}\bigsqcup H$ is perfect if $s\geq 3$ and $t\geq 3$.

By explicitly describing a cellular decomposition we determine the Borel invariant cycles that generate the Chow groups of the quotient of a reductive group by a Levi subgroup. For illustrations we consider the variety of polarizations $\mbf{SL}_n / \mbf{S}(\mbf{GL}_p\times \mbf{GL}_q)$, and we introduce the notion of a sect for describing its cellular decomposition. In particular, for $p=q$, we show that the Bruhat order on the sect corresponding to the dense cell is isomorphic, as a poset, to the rook monoid with the Bruhat-Chevalley-Renner order.

Asymptotic Analysis of Regular Sequences
Published in Algorithmica volume 82, pages 429508 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
In this article, $q$-regular sequences in the sense of Allouche and Shallit are analysed asymptotically. It is shown that the summatory function of a regular sequence can asymptotically be decomposed as a finite sum of periodic fluctuations multiplied by a scaling factor. Each of these terms corresponds to an eigenvalue of the sum of matrices of a linear representation of the sequence; only the eigenvalues of absolute value larger than the joint spectral radius of the matrices contribute terms which grow faster than the error term. The paper has a particular focus on the Fourier coefficients of the periodic fluctuations: They are expressed as residues of the corresponding Dirichlet generating function. This makes it possible to compute them in an efficient way. The asymptotic analysis deals with Mellin--Perron summations and uses two arguments to overcome convergence issues, namely Hölder regularity of the fluctuations together with a pseudo-Tauberian argument. Apart from the very general result, three examples are discussed in more detail: sequences defined as the sum of outputs written by a transducer when reading a $q$-ary expansion of the input; the amount of esthetic numbers in the first~$N$ natural numbers; and the number of odd entries in the rows of Pascal's rhombus. For these examples, very precise asymptotic formulæ are presented. In the latter two examples, prior to this analysis only rough estimates were known.

We consider the Cauchy problem for the Volterra chain with an initial condition equal to 0 in one node and 1 in the others. It is shown that this problem admits an exact solution in terms of the Bessel functions. The Taylor series arising here are related to the exponential generating function for Catalan numbers.

On Weakly Distinguishing Graph Polynomials
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 21 no. 1, ICGT 2018 (April 2, 2019) dmtcs:4949 • View Publication • BIB
A univariate graph polynomial P(G;X) is weakly distinguishing if for almost all finite graphs G there is a finite graph H with P(G;X)=P(H;X). We show that the clique polynomial and the independence polynomial are weakly distinguishing. Furthermore, we show that generating functions of induced subgraphs with property C are weakly distinguishing provided that C is of bounded degeneracy or tree-width. The same holds for the harmonious chromatic polynomial.

On the gaps of the spectrum of volumes of trades
Published in J. Comb. Des. 26(3) 2018, 119-126 • View Publication • BIB
A pair $\{T_0,T_1\}$ of disjoint collections of $k$-subsets (blocks) of a set $V$ of cardinality $v$ is called a $t$-$(v,k)$ trade or simply a $t$-trade if every $t$-subset of $V$ is included in the same number of blocks of $T_0$ and $T_1$. The cardinality of $T_0$ is called the volume of the trade. Using the weight distribution of the Reed--Muller code, we prove the conjecture that for every $i$ from $2$ to $t$, there are no $t$-trades of volume greater than $2^{t+1}-2^i$ and less than $2^{t+1}-2^{i-1}$ and derive restrictions on the $t$-trade volumes that are less than $2^{t+1}+2^{t-1}$.

Tiling-based models of perimeter and area
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider polygonal tilings of certain regions and use these to give intuitive definitions of tiling-based perimeter and area. We apply these definitions to rhombic tilings of Elnitsky polygons, computing sharp bounds and average values for perimeter tiles in convex centrally symmetric 2n-gons. These bounds and values have implications for the combinatorics of reduced decompositions of permutations. We also classify the permutations whose polygons gave minimal perimeter, defined in two different ways. We conclude by looking at some of these questions in the context of domino tilings, giving a recursive formula and generating function for one family, and describing a family of minimal-perimeter regions.

Embedding cover-free families and cryptographical applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
Cover-free families are set systems used as solutions for a large variety of problems, and in particular, problems where we deal with $n$ elements and want to identify $d$ invalid ones among them by performing only $t$ tests ($t \leq n$). We are specially interested in cryptographic problems, and we note that some of these problems need cover-free families with an increasing size $n$. Solutions that propose the increase of $n$, such as \emph{monotone families} and \emph{nested families}, have been recently considered in the literature. In this paper, we propose a generalization that we call \emph{embedding families}, which allows us to increase both $n$ and $d$. We propose constructions of \emph{embedding families} using polynomials over finite fields, and show specific cases where this construction allows us to prioritize increase of $d$ or $n$ with good compression ratios. We also provide new constructions for monotone families with improved compression ratio. Finally, we show how to use embedded sequences of orthogonal arrays and packing arrays to build embedding families.

Quasi-period collapse for duals to Fano polygons: an explanation arising from algebraic geometry
The Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polytope $P$ is a fundamental invariant counting lattice points in integer dilates of $P$. The quasi-period of this quasi-polynomial divides the denominator of $P$ but is not always equal to it: this situation is called quasi-period collapse. Polytopes experiencing quasi-period collapse appear widely across algebra and geometry, and yet the phenomenon remains largely mysterious. Using techniques from algebraic geometry - specifically the $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein deformation theory of orbifold del Pezzo surfaces - we explain quasi-period collapse for rational polygons dual to Fano polygons and describe explicitly the discrepancy between the quasi-period and the denominator.

Polyhedral realizations of crystal bases and convex-geometric Demazure operators
Published • View Publication • BIB
The main object in this paper is a certain rational convex polytope whose lattice points give a polyhedral realization of a highest weight crystal basis. This is also identical to a Newton-Okounkov body of a flag variety, and it gives a toric degeneration. In this paper, we prove that a specific class of this polytope is given by Kiritchenko's Demazure operators on polytopes. This implies that polytopes in this class are all lattice polytopes. As an application, we give a sufficient condition for the corresponding toric variety to be Gorenstein Fano.

Generalized Stability of Heisenberg Coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
Stembridge introduced the notion of stability for Kronecker triples which generalize Murnaghan's classical stability result for Kronecker coefficients. Sam and Snowden proved a conjecture of Stembridge concerning stable Kronecker triple, and they also showed an analogous result for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. Heisenberg coefficients are Schur structure constants of the Heisenberg product which generalize both Littlewood--Richardson coefficients and Kronecker coefficients. We show that any stable triple for Kronecker coefficients or Littlewood--Richardson coefficients also stabilizes Heisenberg coefficients, and we classify the triples stabilizing Heisenberg coefficients. We also follow Vallejo's idea of using matrix additivity to generate Heisenberg stable triples.

On the spectral characterization of mixed extensions of $P_3$
Published • View Publication • BIB
A mixed extension of a graph $G$ is a graph $H$ obtained from $G$ by replacing each vertex of $G$ by a clique or a coclique, whilst two vertices in $H$ corresponding to distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ of $G$ are adjacent whenever $x$ and $y$ are adjacent in $G$. If $G$ is the path $P_3$, then $H$ has at most three adjacency eigenvalues unequal to $0$ and $-1$. Recently, the first author classified the graphs with the mentioned eigenvalue property. Using this classification we investigate mixed extension of $P_3$ on being determined by the adjacency spectrum. We present several cospectral families, and with the help of a computer we find all graphs on at most $25$ vertices that are cospectral with a mixed extension of $P_3$.
