The CDE property for skew vexillary permutations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 168, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a conjecture of Reiner, Tenner, and Yong which says that the initial weak order intervals corresponding to certain vexillary permutations have the coincidental down-degree expectations (CDE) property. Actually our theorem applies more generally to certain "skew vexillary" permutations (a notion we introduce), and shows that these posets are in fact "toggle CDE." As a corollary we obtain a homomesy result for rowmotion acting on semidistributive lattices in the sense of Barnard and of Thomas and Williams.
On the Number of Order Types in Integer Grids of Small Size
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\{p_1,\dots,p_n\}$ and $\{q_1,\dots,q_n\}$ be two sets of $n$ labeled points in general position in the plane. We say that these two point sets have the same order type if for every triple of indices $(i,j,k)$, $p_k$ is above the directed line from $p_i$ to $p_j$ if and only if $q_k$ is above the directed line from $q_i$ to $q_j$. In this paper we give the first non-trivial lower bounds on the number of different order types of $n$ points that can be realized in integer grids of polynomial
$k$-Schur expansions of Catalan functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We make a broad conjecture about the $k$-Schur positivity of Catalan functions, symmetric functions which generalize the (parabolic) Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We resolve the conjecture with positive combinatorial formulas in cases which address the $k$-Schur expansion of (1) Hall-Littlewood polynomials, proving the $q=0$ case of the strengthened Macdonald positivity conjecture of Lapointe, Lascoux, and Morse; (2) the product of a Schur function and a $k$-Schur function when the indexing partitions concatenate to a partition, describing a class of Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum cohomology of complete flag varieties; (3) $k$-split polynomials, proving a substantial case of a problem of Broer and Shimozono-Weyman on parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In addition, we prove the conjecture that $k$-Schur functions defined in terms of $k$-split polynomials agree with strong tableau $k$-Schur functions.

From the flat-space S-matrix to the Wavefunction of the Universe
The physical information encoded in the cosmological late-time wavefunction of the universe is tied to its singularity structure and its behaviour as such singularities are approached. One important singularity is identified by the vanishing of the total energy, where the wavefunction reduces to the physics of scattering in flat space. In this paper, we discuss the behaviour of the perturbative wavefunction as its other singularities are approached and the role played by the flat-space scattering, in the simplified context of the class of toy models admitting a first principle definition in terms of cosmological polytopes. The problems then translates into the analysis of the structure of its facets, one of which -- the scattering facet -- beautifully encodes the flat-space S-matrix. We show that all the boundaries of the cosmological polytope encode information about the flat-space physics. In particular, a subset of its facets turns out to have a similar structure as the scattering facet, with the vertices which can be grouped together to form lower dimensional scattering facets. The other facets admit one (and only one) triangulation in terms of products of lower dimensional scattering facets. As a consequence, the whole perturbative wavefunction can be represented as a sum of product of flat-space scattering amplitudes. Finally, we turn the table around and ask whether the knowledge of the flat-space scattering amplitudes suffices to reconstruct the wavefunction of the universe. We show that, at least for our class of toy models, this is indeed the case at tree level if we are also provided with a subset of symmetries that the wavefunction ought to satisfy. Once the tree cosmological polytopes are reconstructed, the loop ones can be obtained as a particular projection of them.

Strange Expectations and the Winnie-the-Pooh Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the study of simultaneous cores, we give three proofs (in varying levels of generality) for the expected norm of a weight in a highest weight representation of a complex simple Lie algebra. First, we argue directly using the polynomial method and the Weyl character formula. Second, we use the combinatorics of semistandard tableaux to obtain the result in type A. Third, and most interestingly, we relate this problem to the "Winnie-the-Pooh problem" regarding orthogonal decompositions of Lie algebras; although this approach offers the most explanatory power, it applies only to Cartan types other than A and C. We conclude with computations of many combinatorial cumulants.

An upper bound on the Wiener Index of a k-connected graph
The Wiener index of a connected graph is the summation of all distances between unordered pairs of vertices of the graph. In this paper, we give an upper bound on the Wiener index of a $k$-connected graph $G$ of order $n$ for integers $n-1>k \ge 1$: \[W(G) \le \frac{1}{4} n \lfloor \frac{n+k-2}{k} \rfloor (2n+k-2-k\lfloor \frac{n+k-2}{k} \rfloor).\] Moreover, we show that this upper bound is sharp when $k \ge 2$ is even, and can be obtained by the Wiener index of Harary graph $H_{k,n}$.

Finding Independent Transversals Efficiently
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 29 (2020) 780-806 • View Publication • BIB
We give an efficient algorithm that, given a graph $G$ and a partition $V_1,\ldots,V_m$ of its vertex set, finds either an independent transversal (an independent set $\{v_1,\ldots,v_m\}$ in $G$ such that $v_i\in V_i$ for each $i$), or a subset $\mathcal B$ of vertex classes such that the subgraph of $G$ induced by $\bigcup\mathcal B$ has a small dominating set. A non-algorithmic proof of this result has been known for a number of years and has been applied to solve many other problems. Thus we are able to give algorithmic versions of many of these applications, a few of which we describe explicitly here.
The Sitting Closer to Friends than Enemies Problem in the Circumference
The Sitting Closer to Friends than Enemies (SCFE) problem is to find an embedding in a metric space for the vertices of a given signed graph so that, for every pair of incident edges with different sign, the positive edge is shorter (in the metric of the space) than the negative edge. In this document, we present new results regarding the SCFE problem when the metric space in consideration is the circumference. Our main results say that, given a signed graph, it is NP-complete to decide whether such an embedding exists in the circumference or not. Nevertheless, if the given signed graph is complete, then such decision can be made in polynomial time. In particular, we prove that, given a complete signed graph, it has such an embedding if and only if its positive part is a proper circular arc graph.

Discrepancy in random hypergraph models
We study hypergraph discrepancy in two closely related random models of hypergraphs on $n$ vertices and $m$ hyperedges. The first model, $\mathcal{H}_1$, is when every vertex is present in exactly $t$ randomly chosen hyperedges. The premise of this is closely tied to, and motivated by the Beck-Fiala conjecture. The second, perhaps more natural model, $\mathcal{H}_2$, is when the entries of the $m \times n$ incidence matrix is sampled in an i.i.d. fashion, each with probability $p$. We prove the following: 1. In $\mathcal{H}_1$, when $\log^{10}n \ll t \ll \sqrt{n}$, and $m = n$, we show that the discrepancy of the hypergraph is almost surely at most $O(\sqrt{t})$. This improves upon a result of Ezra and Lovett for this range of parameters. 2. In $\mathcal{H}_2$, when $p= \frac{1}{2}$, and $n = Ω(m \log m)$, we show that the discrepancy is almost surely at most $1$. This answers an open problem of Hoberg and Rothvoss.

Improving the $\frac{1}{3}-\frac{2}{3}$ Conjecture for Width Two Posets
Published in Combinatorica volume 41, pages 99-126 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
Extending results of Linial (1984) and Aigner (1985), we prove a uniform lower bound on the balance constant of a poset $P$ of width $2$. This constant is defined as $δ(P) = \max_{(x, y)\in P^2}\min\{\mathbb{P}(x\prec y), \mathbb{P}(y\prec x)\}$, where $\mathbb{P}(x\prec y)$ is the probability $x$ is less than $y$ in a uniformly random linear extension of $P$. In particular, we show that if $P$ is a width $2$ poset that cannot be formed from the singleton poset and the three element poset with one relation using the operation of direct sum, then \[δ(P)\ge\frac{-3 + 5\sqrt{17}}{52}\approx 0.33876\ldots.\] This partially answers a question of Brightwell (1999); a full resolution would require a proof of the $\frac{1}{3}-\frac{2}{3}$ Conjecture that if $P$ is not totally ordered then $δ(P)\ge\frac{1}{3}$. Furthermore, we construct a sequence of posets $T_n$ of width $2$ with $δ(T_n)\rightarrowβ\approx 0.348843\ldots$, giving an improvement over a construction of Chen (2017) and over the finite posets found by Peczarski (2017). Numerical work on small posets by Peczarski suggests the constant $β$ may be optimal.
Log-Concave Polynomials III: Mason's Ultra-Log-Concavity Conjecture for Independent Sets of Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a self-contained proof of the strongest version of Mason's conjecture, namely that for any matroid the sequence of the number of independent sets of given sizes is ultra log-concave. To do this, we introduce a class of polynomials, called completely log-concave polynomials, whose bivariate restrictions have ultra log-concave coefficients. At the heart of our proof we show that for any matroid, the homogenization of the generating polynomial of its independent sets is completely log-concave.
A general lower bound for the domination number of cylindrical graphs
Published in Bull. Malays. Math. Sci. Soc. 43, (2020) • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we present a lower bound for the domination number of the Cartesian product of a path and a cycle, that is tight if the length of the cycle is a multiple of five. This bound improves the natural lower bound obtained by using the domination number of the Cartesian product of two paths, that is the best one known so far.

Gradedness of the set of rook placements in $A_{n-1}$
A rook placement is a subset of a root system consisting of positive roots with pairwise non-positive inner products. To each rook placement in a root system one can assign the coadjoint orbit of the Borel subgroup of a reductive algebraic group with this root system. Degenerations of such orbits induce a natural partial order on the set of rook placements. We study combinatorial structure of the set of rook placements in $A_{n-1}$ with respect to a slightly different order and prove that this poset is graded.
Matroid-minor Hopf algebra: a cancellation-free antipode formula and other applications of sign-reversing involutions
In this paper, we give a cancellation-free antipode formula for the matroid-minor Hopf algebra. We then explore applications of this formula. For example, the cancellation-free formula expresses the antipode of uniform matroids as a sum over certain ordered set partitions. We also prove that all matroids over any hyperfield (in the sense of Baker and Bowler) have cancellation-free antipode formulas; furthermore, the cancellations in the antipode are independent of the hyperfield structure and only depend on the underlying matroid.

Hodge-Riemann relations for Potts model partition functions
We prove that the Hessians of nonzero partial derivatives of the (homogenous) multivariate Tutte polynomial of any matroid have exactly one positive eigenvalue on the positive orthant when $0<q\leq 1$. Consequences are proofs of the strongest conjecture of Mason and negative dependence properties for $q$-state Potts model partition functions.

A Network Reliability Approach to the Analysis of Combinatorial Repairable Threshold Schemes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A repairable threshold scheme (which we abbreviate to RTS) is a $(τ,n)$-threshold scheme in which a subset of players can "repair" another player's share in the event that their share has been lost or corrupted. This will take place without the participation of the dealer who set up the scheme. The repairing protocol should not compromise the (unconditional) security of the threshold scheme. Combinatorial repairable threshold schemes (or combinatorial RTS) were recently introduced by Stinson and Wei. In these schemes, "multiple shares" are distributed to each player, as defined by a suitable combinatorial design called the distribution design. In this paper, we study the reliability of these combinatorial repairable threshold schemes in a setting where players may not be available to take part in a repair of a given player's share. Using techniques from network reliability theory, we consider the probability of existence of an available repair set, as well as the expected number of available repair sets, for various types of distribution designs.
Log-Concave Polynomials II: High-Dimensional Walks and an FPRAS for Counting Bases of a Matroid
Published • View Publication • BIB
We design an FPRAS to count the number of bases of any matroid given by an independent set oracle, and to estimate the partition function of the random cluster model of any matroid in the regime where $0<q<1$. Consequently, we can sample random spanning forests in a graph and (approximately) compute the reliability polynomial of any matroid. We also prove the thirty year old conjecture of Mihail and Vazirani that the bases exchange graph of any matroid has expansion at least 1. One of our key observations is a close connection between pure simplicial complexes and multiaffine homogeneous polynomials. Specifically, if $X$ is a pure simplicial complex with positive weights on its maximal faces, we can associate with $X$ a multiaffine homogeneous polynomial $p_{X}$ such that the eigenvalues of the localized random walks on $X$ correspond to the eigenvalues of the Hessian of derivatives of $p_{X}$.

A note on antimagic orientations of even regular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the conjecture of Hartsfield and Ringel on antimagic labelings of undirected graphs, Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz initiated the study of antimagic labelings of digraphs in 2010. Very recently, it has been conjectured in [Antimagic orientation of even regular graphs, J. Graph Theory, 90 (2019), 46-53.] that every graph admits an antimagtic orientation, which is a strengthening of an earlier conjecture of Hefetz, Mütze and Schwartz. In this paper, we prove that every $2d$-regular graph (not necessarily connected) admits an antimagic orientation, where $d\ge2$. Together with known results, our main result implies that the above-mentioned conjecture is true for all regular graphs.

On the neighborliness of dual flow polytopes of quivers
In this note we investigate under which conditions the dual of the flow polytope (henceforth referred to as the `dual flow polytope') of a quiver is k-neighborly, for generic weights near the canonical weight. We provide a lower bound on k, depending only on the edge connectivity of the underlying graph, for such weights. In the case where the canonical weight is in fact generic, we explicitly determine a vertex presentation of the dual flow polytope. Finally, we specialize our results to the case of complete, bipartite quivers where we show that the canonical weight is indeed generic, and are able to provide an improved bound on k. Hence, we are able to produce many new examples of high-dimensional, k-neighborly polytopes.
Expected Chromatic Number of Random Subgraphs
Given a graph $G$ and $p \in [0,1]$, let $G_p$ denote the random subgraph of $G$ obtained by keeping each edge independently with probability $p$. Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudokov proved $\mathbb{E} [χ(G_p)] \geq C_p \frac{χ(G)}{\log |V(G)|}$, and Bukh conjectured an improvement of $\mathbb{E}[χ(G_p)] \geq C_p \frac{χ(G)}{\log χ(G)}$. We prove a new spectral lower bound on $\mathbb{E}[χ(G_p)]$, as progress towards Bukh's conjecture. We also propose the stronger conjecture that for any fixed $p \leq 1/2$, among all graphs of fixed chromatic number, $\mathbb{E}[χ(G_p)]$ is minimized by the complete graph. We prove this stronger conjecture when $G$ is planar or $χ(G) < 4$. We also consider weaker lower bounds on $\mathbb{E}[χ(G_p)]$ proposed in a recent paper by Shinkar; we answer two open questions of Shinkar negatively and propose a possible refinement of one of them.
