The Gelin-Cesàro identity in some third-order Jacobsthal sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we deal with two families of third-order Jacobsthal sequences. The first family consists of generalizations of the Jacobsthal sequence. We show that the Gelin-Cesàro identity is satisfied. Also, we define a family of generalized third-order Jacobsthal sequences $\{\mathbb{J}_{n}^{(3)}\}_{n\geq 0}$ by the recurrence relation $$\mathbb{J}_{n+3}^{(3)}=\mathbb{J}_{n+2}^{(3)}+\mathbb{J}_{n+1}^{(3)}+2\mathbb{J}_{n}^{(3)},\ n\geq0,$$ with initials conditions $\mathbb{J}_{0}^{(3)}=a$, $\mathbb{J}_{1}^{(3)}=b$ and $\mathbb{J}_{2}^{(3)}=c$, where $a$, $b$ and $c$ are non-zero real numbers. Many sequences in the literature are special cases of this sequence. We find the generating function and Binet's formula of the sequence. Then we show that the Cassini and Gelin-Cesàro identities are satisfied by the indices of this generalized sequence.
Minor-closed graph classes with bounded layered pathwidth
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math., 34(3), 1693-1709, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that a minor-closed class of graphs has bounded layered pathwidth if and only if some apex-forest is not in the class. This generalises a theorem of Robertson and Seymour, which says that a minor-closed class of graphs has bounded pathwidth if and only if some forest is not in the class.
Ordered Size Ramsey Number of Paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
An ordered graph is a simple graph with an ordering on its vertices. Define the ordered path $P_n$ to be the monotone increasing path with $n$ edges. The ordered size Ramsey number $\tilde{r}(P_r,P_s)$ is the minimum number $m$ for which there exists an ordered graph $H$ with $m$ edges such that every two-coloring of the edges of $H$ contains a red copy of $P_r$ or a blue copy of $P_s$. For $2\leq r\leq s$, we show $\frac{1}{8}r^2s\leq \tilde{r}(P_r,P_s)\leq Cr^2s(\log s)^3$, where $C>0$ is an absolute constant. This problem is motivated by the recent results of Bucić-Letzter-Sudakov and Letzter-Sudakov for oriented graphs.

A note on spanning trees of connected $K_{1,t}$-free graphs whose stems have a few leaves
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $T$ be a tree, a vertex of degree one is called a leaf. The set of leaves of $T$ is denoted by $Leaf(T)$. The subtree $T-Leaf(T)$ of $T$ is called the stem of $T$ and denoted by $Stem(T).$ In this note, we give a sharp sufficient condition to show that a $K_{1,t}-$free graph has a spanning tree whose stem has a few leaves. By applying the main result, we give improvements of previous related results.

On the lower bounds of Davenport constant
Published in J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 171 (2020), 105162, 15pp • View Publication • BIB
Let $G = C_{n_1} \oplus \cdots \oplus C_{n_r}$ with $1 < n_1 | \cdots | n_r$ be a finite abelian group. The Davenport constant $\mathsf D(G)$ is the smallest integer $t$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $|S|\ge t$ has a non-empty zero-sum subsequence. It is a starting point of zero-sum theory but only has a trivial lower bound $\mathsf D^*(G) = n_1 + \cdots + n_r - r + 1$, which equals $\mathsf D(G)$ over $p$-groups. We investigate the non-dispersive sequences over group $C_n^r$, thereby revealing the growth of $\mathsf D(G)-\mathsf D^*(G)$ over non-$p$-groups $G = C_n^r \oplus C_{kn}$ with $n,k \ne 1$. We give a general lower bound of $\mathsf D(G)$ over non-$p$-groups and show that, let $G$ be abelian groups with $\exp(G)=m$ and rank $r$, fix $m>0$ a non-prime-power, then for each $N>0$ there exists an $\varepsilon>0$ such that if $|G|/m^r<\varepsilon $, then $\mathsf D(G)-\mathsf D^*(G)>N$.
On the structure of spikes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Spikes are an important class of 3-connected matroids. For an integer $r\geq 3$, there is a unique binary r-spike denoted by $Z_{r}$. When a circuit-hyperplane of $Z_{r}$ is relaxed, we obtain another spike and repeating this procedure will produce other non-binary spikes. The $es$-splitting operation on a binary spike of rank $r$, may not yield a spike. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the $es$-splitting operation to construct $Z_{r+1}$ directly from $Z_{r}$. Indeed, all binary spikes and many of non-binary spikes of each rank can be derived from the spike $Z_{3}$ by a sequence of The $es$-splitting operations and circuit-hyperplane relaxations.

Families of Markov chains with compatible symmetric-group actions
Published • View Publication • BIB
For each $n,r \geq 0$, let $KG(n,r)$ denote the Kneser Graph; that whose vertices are labeled by $r$-element subsets of $n$, and whose edges indicate that the corresponding subsets are disjoint. Fixing $r$ and allowing $n$ to vary, one obtains a family of nested graphs, each equipped with a natural action by a symmetric group $S_n$, such that these actions are compatible. Collections of graphs of this type are common in algebraic combinatorics and include families such as the Johnson Graphs, Crown Graphs and Rook Graphs. In previous work, the authors systematically studied families of this type using the language of representation stability and FI-modules. In that work, it is shown that such families of graphs exhibit a large variety of asymptotic regular behaviors. The present work applies the theory developed in that previous work, later refined in work of the authors and Speyer, to study random walks on the graphs of such families. We show that the moments of hitting times exhibit rational function behavior asymptotically. By consequence we conclude similar facts about the entries of the discrete Green's functions, as defined by Chung and Yau. Finally, we illustrate how the algebro-combinatorial structure of the graphs in these families give bounds on the mixing times of random walks on those graphs. We suggest some possible directions for future study, including of the appearance, or not, of the cut-off phenomenon, originally presented by Diaconis.

On the complexity of color-avoiding site and bond percolation
Published • View Publication • BIB
The mathematical analysis of robustness and error-tolerance of complex networks has been in the center of research interest. On the other hand, little work has been done when the attack-tolerance of the vertices or edges are not independent but certain classes of vertices or edges share a mutual vulnerability. In this study, we consider a graph and we assign colors to the vertices or edges, where the color-classes correspond to the shared vulnerabilities. An important problem is to find robustly connected vertex sets: nodes that remain connected to each other by paths providing any type of error (i.e. erasing any vertices or edges of the given color). This is also known as color-avoiding percolation. In this paper, we study various possible modeling approaches of shared vulnerabilities, we analyze the computational complexity of finding the robustly (color-avoiding) connected components. We find that the presented approaches differ significantly regarding their complexity.

Complex Hadamard matrices attached to a 3-class nonsymmetric association scheme
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we classify complex Hadamard matrices contained in the Bose-Mesner algebra of nonsymmetric 3-class association schemes. As a consequence of our classification, we have two infinite families and some small examples of complex Hadamard matrices contained in the Bose-Mesner algebra of a self-dual fission of a complete multipartite graph.
Alphabet-Dependent Bounds for Linear Locally Repairable Codes Based on Residual Codes
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, April 2019 • View Publication • BIB
Locally repairable codes (LRCs) have gained significant interest for the design of large distributed storage systems as they allow a small number of erased nodes to be recovered by accessing only a few others. Several works have thus been carried out to understand the optimal rate-distance tradeoff, but only recently the size of the alphabet has been taken into account. In this paper, a novel definition of locality is proposed to keep track of the precise number of nodes required for a local repair when the repair sets do not yield MDS codes. Then, a new alphabet-dependent bound is derived, which applies both to the new definition and the initial definition of locality. The new bound is based on consecutive residual codes and intrinsically uses the Griesmer bound. A special case of the bound yields both the extension of the Cadambe-Mazumdar bound and the Singleton-type bound for codes with locality $(r, δ)$, implying that the new bound is at least as good as these bounds. Furthermore, an upper bound on the asymptotic rate-distance tradeoff of LRCs is derived, and yields the tightest known upper bound for large relative minimum distances. Achievability results are also provided by deriving the locality of the family of Simplex codes together with a few examples of optimal codes.

Duality of Graph Invariants
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a new set of duality relations between weighted, combinatoric invariants of a graph $G$. The dualities arise from a non-linear transform $\mathfrak{B}$, acting on the weight function $p$. We define $\mathfrak{B}$ on a space of real-valued functions $\mathcal{O}$ and investigate its properties. We show that three invariants (weighted independence number, weighted Lovász number, and weighted fractional packing number) are fixed points of $\mathfrak{B}^{2}$, but the weighted Shannon capacity is not. We interpret these invariants in the study of quantum non-locality.

On the roots of the subtree polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a tree $T$, the subtree polynomial of $T$ is the generating polynomial for the number of subtrees of $T$. We show that the complex roots of the subtree polynomial are contained in the disk $\left\{z\in\mathbb{C}\colon\ |z|\leq 1+\sqrt[3]{3}\right\}$, and that $K_{1,3}$ is the only tree whose subtree polynomial has a root on the boundary. We also prove that the closure of the collection of all real roots of subtree polynomials contains the interval $[-2,-1]$, while the intervals $(\infty,-1-\sqrt[3]{3})$, $[-1,0)$, and $(0,\infty)$ are root-free.

Extremal Problems Related to the Cardinality Redundance of Graphs
A dominating set of a graph $G$ is a set of vertices $D$ such that for all $v \in V(G)$, either $v \in D$ or $(v,d) \in E(G)$ for some $d \in D$. The cardinality redundance of a vertex set $S$, $CR(S)$, is the number of vertices in $V(G)$ such that $|N[x] \cap S| \geq 2$. The cardinality redundance of $G$ is the minimum of $CR(S)$ taken over all dominating sets $S$. A set that achieves $CR(G)$ is a $γ_{cr}$-set, and the size of the minimum $γ_{cr}$-set is $γ_{cr}(G)$. We give the maximum number of edges in a graph with a given number of vertices and given cardinality redundance. In the cases that $CR(G)=0$, $1$, or $2$, we give the minimum and maximum number of edges of graphs where $γ_{cr}(G)$ is fixed. We give the minimum and maximum values of $γ_{cr}(G)$ when the number of edges are fixed and $CR(G)=0,1$, and we give the maximum values of $γ_{cr}(G)$ when the number of edges are fixed and $CR(G)=2$.
Graphs of gonality three
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 2 (2019) no. 6 p. 1197-1217 • View Publication • BIB
In 2013, Chan classified all metric hyperelliptic graphs, proving that divisorial gonality and geometric gonality are equivalent in the hyperelliptic case. We show that such a classification extends to combinatorial graphs of divisorial gonality three, under certain edge- and vertex-connectivity assumptions. We also give a construction for graphs of divisorial gonality three, and provide conditions for determining when a graph is not of divisorial gonality three.

Matroidal representations of groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop the rudiments of a finite-dimensional representation theory of groups over idempotent semifields by considering linear actions on tropical linear spaces. This can be considered a tropical representation theory, a characteristic one modular representation theory, or a matroidal representation theory---and we draw from all three perspectives. After some general properties and constructions, including a weak tropical analogue of Maschke's theorem, we turn to a study of the regular representation of a finite group and its tropicalization. For abelian groups we find an interesting interplay between elementary number theory and matroid theory---even cyclic groups are surprisingly rich---and we conclude with some possible first steps toward a tropical character theory.

A tangent method derivation of the arctic curve for q-weighted paths with arbitrary starting points
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 52 115205 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
We use a tangent method approach to obtain the arctic curve in a model of non-intersecting lattice paths within the first quadrant, including a q-dependent weight associated with the area delimited by the paths. Our model is characterized by an arbitrary sequence of starting points along the positive horizontal axis, whose distribution involves an arbitrary piecewise differentiable function. We give an explicit expression for the arctic curve in terms of this arbitrary function and of the parameter q. A particular emphasis is put on the deformation of the arctic curve upon varying q, and on its limiting shapes when q tends to 0 or infinity. Our analytic results are illustrated by a number of detailed examples.

Some properties of a class of refined Eulerian polynomials
In recent, H. Sun defined a new kind of refined Eulerian polynomials, namely, \begin{eqnarray*} A_n(p,q)=\sum_{π\in \mathfrak{S}_n}p^{{\rm odes}(π)}q^{{\rm edes}(π)} \end{eqnarray*} for $n\geq 1$, where ${odes}(π)$ and ${edes}(π)$ enumerate the number of descents of permutation $π$ in odd and even positions, respectively. In this paper, we build an exponential generating function for $A_{n}(p,q)$ and establish an explicit formula for $A_{n}(p,q)$ in terms of Eulerian polynomials $A_{n}(q)$ and $C(q)$, the generating function for Catalan numbers. In certain special case, we set up a connection between $A_{n}(p,q)$ and $A_{n}(p,0)$ or $A_{n}(0,q)$, and express the coefficients of $A_{n}(0,q)$ by Eulerian numbers. Specially, this connection creates a new relation between Euler numbers and Eulerian numbers.

Inglenook Shunting Puzzles
Published • View Publication • BIB
An inglenook puzzle is a classic shunting (switching) puzzle often found on model railway layouts. A collection of wagons sits in a fan of sidings with a limited length headshunt (lead track). The aim of the puzzle is to rearrange the wagons into a desired order (often a randomly chosen order). This article answers the question: When can you be sure this can always be done? The problem of finding a solution in a minimum number of moves is also addressed.

A new determinant for the $Q$-enumeration of alternating sign matrices
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 180 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
Fischer provided a new type of binomial determinant for the number of alternating sign matrices involving the third root of unity. In this paper we prove that her formula, when replacing the third root of unity by an indeterminate $q$, is actually the $(2+q+q^{-1})$-enumeration of alternating sign matrices. By evaluating a generalisation of this determinant we are able to reprove a conjecture of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey stating that the $Q$-enumeration is a product of two polynomials in $Q$. Further we provide a closed product formula for the generalised determinant in the 0-,1- 2- and 3-enumeration case, leading to a new proof of the $1$-,$2$- and $3$-enumeration of alternating sign matrices, and a factorisation in the $4$-enumeration case. Finally we relate the $1$-enumeration of our generalised determinant to the determinant evaluations of Ciucu, Eisenkölbl, Krattenthaler and Zare, which counts weighted cyclically symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a triangular hole and is a generalisation of a famous result by Andrews.
