Squeezed Complexes

Given a shifted order ideal $U$, we associate to it a family of simplicial complexes $(Δ_t(U))_{t\geq 0}$ that we call squeezed complexes. In a special case, our construction gives squeezed balls that were defined and used by Kalai to show that there are many more simplicial spheres than boundaries of simplicial polytopes. We study combinatorial and algebraic properties of squeezed complexes. In particular, we show that they are vertex decomposable and characterize when they have the weak or the strong Lefschetz property. Moreover, we define a new combinatorial invariant of pure simplicial complexes, called the singularity index, that can be interpreted as a measure of how far a given simplicial complex is from being a manifold. In the case of squeezed complexes $(Δ_t(U))_{t\geq 0}$, the singularity index turns out to be strictly decreasing until it reaches (and stays) zero if $t$ grows.
Tverberg-Type Theorems with Trees and Cycles as (Nerve) Intersection Patterns
Tverberg's theorem says that a set with sufficiently many points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ can always be partitioned into $m$ parts so that the $(m-1)$-simplex is the (nerve) intersection pattern of the convex hulls of the parts. The main results of our paper demonstrate that Tverberg's theorem is but a special case of a more general situation. Given sufficiently many points, all trees and cycles can also be induced by at least one partition of a point set.
All $(96,20,4)$ difference sets and related structures
In 1978, Robert Kibler at the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Maryland published a description of all noncyclic difference sets with $k < 20$. Kibler's decision to stop his extensive computer search for difference sets at block size 19 was motivated partly by the difficult barrier at $k=20$, the difference sets with parameters $(96,20,4)$. In this paper, we announce the completion of the search for all $(96,20,4)$ difference sets, relying on the computer software GAP and the work of numerous authors over the last few decades. The difference sets and the symmetric designs they create are summarized and links are provided to webpages which explicitly list the difference sets. In addition, we use these $(96,20,4)$ difference sets to construct all $(96, 20, 4, 4)$ and $(96, 19, 2, 4)$ partial difference sets and briefly look at the corresponding strongly regular graphs.
The Delta square conjecture

We conjecture a formula for the symmetric function $\frac{[n-k]_t}{[n]_t}Δ_{h_m}Δ_{e_{n-k}}ω(p_n)$ in terms of decorated partially labelled square paths. This can be seen as a generalization of the square conjecture of Loehr and Warrington (Loehr, Warrington 2007), recently proved by Sergel (Sergel 2017) after the breakthrough of Carlsson and Mellit (Carlsson, Mellit 2018). Moreover, it extends to the square case the combinatorics of the generalized Delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (Haglund, Remmel, Wilson 2015), answering one of their questions. We support our conjecture by proving the specialization $m=q=0$, reducing it to the same case of the Delta conjecture, and the Schröder case, i.e. the case $\langle \cdot ,e_{n-d}h_d\rangle$. The latter provides a broad generalization of the $q,t$-square theorem of Can and Loehr (Can, Loehr 2006). We give also a combinatorial involution, which allows to establish a linear relation among our conjectures (as well as the generalized Delta conjectures) with fixed $m$ and $n$. Finally, in the appendix, we give a new proof of the Delta conjecture at $q=0$.
Ergodic Theorems for the Shift Action and Pointwise Versions of The Abért--Weiss Theorem

Let $Γ$ be a countably infinite group. A common theme in ergodic theory is to start with a probability measure-preserving (p.m.p.) action $Γ\curvearrowright (X, μ)$ and a map $f \in L^1(X, μ)$, and to compare the global average $\int f \,\mathrm{d}μ$ of $f$ to the pointwise averages $|D|^{-1} \sum_{δ\in D} f(δ\cdot x)$, where $x \in X$ and $D$ is a nonempty finite subset of $Γ$. The basic hope is that, when $D$ runs over a suitably chosen infinite sequence, these pointwise averages should converge to the global value for $μ$-almost all $x$.
In this paper we prove several results that refine the above basic paradigm by uniformly controlling the averages over specific sets $D$ rather than considering their limit as $|D| \to \infty$. Our results include ergodic theorems for the Bernoulli shift action $Γ\curvearrowright ([0;1]^Γ, λ^Γ)$ and strengthenings of the theorem of Abért and Weiss that the shift is weakly contained in every free p.m.p. action of $Γ$. In particular, we establish a purely Borel version of the Abért--Weiss theorem for finitely generated groups of subexponential growth. The central role in our arguments is played by the recently introduced measurable versions of the Lovász Local Lemma, due to the current author and to Csóka, Grabowski, Máthé, Pikhurko, and Tyros.
Tight Upper Bounds on the Crossing Number in a Minor-Closed Class
The crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of crossings in a drawing of the graph in the plane. Our main result is that every graph $G$ that does not contain a fixed graph as a minor has crossing number $O(Δn)$, where $G$ has $n$ vertices and maximum degree $Δ$. This dependence on $n$ and $Δ$ is best possible. This result answers an open question of Wood and Telle [New York J. Mathematics, 2007], who proved the best previous bound of $O(Δ^2 n)$. We also study the convex and rectilinear crossing numbers, and prove an $O(Δn)$ bound for the convex crossing number of bounded pathwidth graphs, and a $\sum_v°(v)^2$ bound for the rectilinear crossing number of $K_{3,3}$-minor-free graphs.

In this paper, we discuss when a class function on a finite group is a bent function. We have found a necessary condition for a class function on a finite abelian group to be bent. Also, we have found a necessary and sufficient condition for a class function on a finite cyclic group to be bent.

The main result of D. Archdeacon, M. Conder and J. Širáň [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 366 (2014) 8, 4491-4512] implies existence of a regular, self-dual and self-Petrie dual map of any given even valency. In this paper we extend this result to any odd valency $\ge 5$. This is done by algebraic number theory and maps defined on the groups ${\rm PSL}(2,p)$ in the case of odd prime valency $\ge 5$ and valency $9$, and by coverings for the remaining odd valencies.

For Labouchere system with winning probability $p$ at each coup, we prove that the expectation of the largest bet size under any initial list is finite if $p>\frac{1}{2}$, and is infinite if $p\le \frac{1}{2}$, solving the open conjecture in Grimmett and Stirzaker (2001). The same result holds for a general family of betting systems, and the proof builds upon a recursive representation of the optimal betting system in the larger family.
Neighborhood Complexes of Kneser Graphs, $KG_{3,k}$
In this article, we prove that the neighborhood complex of the Kneser graph $KG_{3,k}$ is of the same homotopy type as that of a wedge of $\frac{(k+1)(k+3)(k+4)(k+6)}{4}+1$ spheres of dimension $k$. We construct a maximal subgraph $S_{3,k}$ of $KG_{3,k}$, whose neighborhood complex deformation retracts onto the neighborhood complex of $SG_{3,k}$.

The deck of a graph $G$ is given by the multiset of (unlabelled) subgraphs $\{G-v:v\in V(G)\}$. The subgraphs $G-v$ are referred to as the cards of $G$. Brown and Fenner recently showed that, for $n\geq29$, the number of edges of a graph $G$ can be computed from any deck missing 2 cards. We show that, for sufficiently large $n$, the number of edges can be computed from any deck missing at most $\frac1{20}\sqrt{n}$ cards.

We give a visual proof of a result of Chapman and Costas-Santos regarding the determinant of sum of matrices. Also we find a new identity expressing permanent of sum of matrices. Besides, we give a graphical interpretation of Newton-Girard identity.

A linear $ [n,k]_q $ code $ C $ is said to be a full weight spectrum (FWS) code if there exist codewords of each nonzero weight less than or equal to $ n $. In this brief communication we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of linear $ [n,k]_q $ full weight spectrum (FWS) codes. Central to our approach is the geometric view of linear codes, whereby columns of a generator matrix correspond to points in $ PG(k-1,q) $.
On the spectral gap of some Cayley graphs on the Weyl group $W(B_n)$

The Laplacian of a (weighted) Cayley graph on the Weyl group $W(B_n)$ is a $N\times N$ matrix with $N = 2^n n!$ equal to the order of the group. We show that for a class of (weighted) generating sets, its spectral gap (lowest nontrivial eigenvalue), is actually equal to the spectral gap of a $2n \times 2n$ matrix associated to a $2n$-dimensional permutation representation of $W_n$. This result can be viewed as an extension to $W(B_n)$ of an analogous result valid for the symmetric group, known as `Aldous' spectral gap conjecture', proven in 2010 by Caputo, Liggett and Richthammer.
Antipodes of monoidal decomposition spaces

We introduce a notion of antipode for monoidal (complete) decomposition spaces, inducing a notion of weak antipode for their incidence bialgebras. In the connected case, this recovers the usual notion of antipode in Hopf algebras. In the non-connected case it expresses an inversion principle of more limited scope, but still sufficient to compute the Möbius function as $μ= ζ\circ S$, just as in Hopf algebras. At the level of decomposition spaces, the weak antipode takes the form of a formal difference of linear endofunctors $S_{\textrm{even}} - S_{\textrm{odd}}$, and it is a refinement of the general Möbius inversion construction of Gálvez-Kock-Tonks, but exploiting the monoidal structure.
Minimal Ramsey graphs for cyclicity
We study graphs with the property that every edge-colouring admits a monochromatic cycle (the length of which may depend freely on the colouring) and describe those graphs that are minimal with this property. We show that every member in this class reduces recursively to one of the base graphs $K_5-e$ or $K_4\vee K_4$ (two copies of $K_4$ identified at an edge), which implies that an arbitrary $n$-vertex graph with $e(G)\geq 2n-1$ must contain one of those as a minor. We also describe three explicit constructions governing the reverse process. As an application we are able to establish Ramsey infiniteness for each of the three possible chromatic subclasses $χ=2, 3, 4$, the unboundedness of maximum degree within the class as well as Ramsey separability of the family of cycles of length $\leq l$ from any of its proper subfamilies.
The Formal Inverse of the Period-Doubling Sequence
If $p$ is a prime number, consider a $p$-automatic sequence $(u_n)_{n\ge 0}$, and let $U(X) = \sum_{n\ge 0} u_n X^n \in \mathbb{F}_p[[X]]$ be its generating function. Assume that there exists a formal power series $V(X) = \sum_{n\ge 0} v_n X^n \in \mathbb{F}_p[[X]]$ which is the compositional inverse of $U$, i.e., $U(V(X))=X=V(U(X))$. The problem investigated in this paper is to study the properties of the sequence $(v_n)_{n\ge 0}$. The work was first initiated for the Thue-Morse sequence, and more recently the case of two variations of the Baum-Sweet sequence has been treated. In this paper, we deal with the case of the period-doubling sequence. We first show that the sequence of indices at which the period-doubling sequence takes value $0$ (resp., $1$) is not $k$-regular for any $k\ge 2$. Secondly, we give recurrence relations for its formal inverse, then we easily show that it is $2$-automatic, and we also provide an automaton that generates it. Thirdly, we study the sequence of indices at which this formal inverse takes value $1$, and we show that it is not $k$-regular for any $k\ge 2$ by connecting it to the characteristic sequence of Fibonacci numbers. We leave as an open problem the case of the sequence of indices at which this formal inverse takes value $0$. We end the paper with a remark on the case of generalized Thue-Morse sequences.
The permanent and diagonal products on the set of nonnegative matrices with bounded rank
We formulate conjectures regarding the maximum value and maximizing matrices of the permanent and of diagonal products on the set of stochastic matrices with bounded rank. We formulate equivalent conjectures on upper bounds for these functions for nonnegative matrices based on their rank, row sums and column sums. In particular we conjecture that the permanent of a singular nonnegative matrix is bounded by 1/2 times the minimum of the product of its row sums and the product of its column sums, and that the product of the elements of any diagonal of a singular nonnegative matrix is bounded by 1/4 times the minimum of the product of its row sums and the product of its column sums.
Efficient closed domination in digraph products

A digraph $D$ is an efficient closed domination digraph if there exists a subset $S$ of $V(D)$ for which the closed out-neighborhoods centered in vertices of $S$ form a partition of $V(D)$. In this work we deal with efficient closed domination digraphs among several product of digraphs. We completely describe the efficient closed domination digraphs among lexicographic and strong products of digraphs. We characterize those direct products of digraphs that are efficient closed domination digraphs, where factors are either two cycles or two paths. Among Cartesian product of digraphs, we describe all such efficient closed domination digraphs such that they are a Cartesian product digraph either with a cycle or with a star.

Motivated by the Erdos-Szekeres convex polytope conjecture in $R^d$, we initiate the study of the following induced Ramsey problem for hypergraphs. Given integers $ n > k \geq 5$, what is the minimum integer $g_k(n)$ such that any $k$-uniform hypergraph on $g_k(n)$ vertices with the property that any set of $k + 1$ vertices induces 0, 2, or 4 edges, contains an independent set of size $n$. Our main result shows that $g_k(n) > 2^{cn^{k-4}}$, where $c = c(k)$.
