Monochromatic Regular Polygons in finitely colored $\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2$
We show that for any finite coloring of the group $\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2$ and for any positive integer $k$, there always exists a monochromatic regular $k$-gon in $\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2 *\mathbb{Z}_2$ with respect to the word length metric induced by the standard generating set; the edge length of which is estimated.

Identifiers for MRD-codes
Published in Linar Algebra Appl. 575 (2019), 66-86 • View Publication • BIB
For any admissible value of the parameters $n$ and $k$ there exist $[n,k]$-Maximum Rank distance ${\mathbb F}_q$-linear codes. Indeed, it can be shown that if field extensions large enough are considered, almost all rank distance codes are MRD. On the other hand, very few families up to equivalence of such codes are currently known. In the present paper we study some invariants of MRD codes and evaluate their value for the known families, providing a new characterization of generalized twisted Gabidulin codes.
Maker-Breaker domination game
We introduce the Maker-Breaker domination game, a two player game on a graph. At his turn, the first player, Dominator, select a vertex in order to dominate the graph while the other player, Staller, forbids a vertex to Dominator in order to prevent him to reach his goal. Both players play alternately without missing their turn. This game is a particular instance of the so-called Maker-Breaker games, that is studied here in a combinatorial context. In this paper, we first prove that deciding the winner of the Maker-Breaker domination game is PSPACE-complete, even for bipartite graphs and split graphs. It is then showed that the problem is polynomial for cographs and trees. In particular, we define a strategy for Dominator that is derived from a variation of the dominating set problem, called the pairing dominating set problem.

Ehrhart-equivalent $\boldsymbol 3$-polytopes are equidecomposable
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 147 (2019), 5373-5383 • View Publication • BIB
We show that if two lattice $3$-polytopes $P$ and $P'$ have the same Ehrhart function then they are $\operatorname{GL}_3({\mathbb Z})$-equidecomposable; that is, they can be partitioned into relatively open simplices $U_1,\dots, U_k$ and $U'_1,\dots,U'_k$ such that $U_i$ and $U'_i$ are unimodularly equivalent, for each $i$.
Triangle-Free Equimatchable Graphs
A graph is called equimatchable if all of its maximal matchings have the same size. Frendrup et al. [8] provided a characterization of equimatchable graphs with girth at least $5$. In this paper, we extend this result by providing a complete structural characterization of equimatchable graphs with girth at least $4$, i.e., equimatchable graphs with no triangle, by identifying the equimatchable triangle-free graph families. Our characterization also extends the result given by Akbari et al. in [1], which proves that the only connected triangle-free equimatchable $r$-regular graphs are $C_5$, $C_7$ and $K_{r,r}$, where $r$ is a positive integer. Given a non-bipartite graph, our characterization implies a linear time recognition algorithm for triangle-free equimatchable graphs.

Revisiting path-type covering and partitioning problems
Covering problems belong to the foundation of graph theory. There are several types of covering problems in graph theory such as covering the vertex set by stars (domination problem), covering the vertex set by cliques (clique covering problem), covering the vertex set by independent sets (coloring problem), and covering the vertex set by paths or cycles. A similar concept which is partitioning problem is also equally important. Lately research in graph theory has produced unprecedented growth because of its various application in engineering and science. The covering and partitioning problem by paths itself have produced a sizable volume of literatures. The research on these problems is expanding in multiple directions and the volume of research papers is exploding. It is the time to simplify and unify the literature on different types of the covering and partitioning problems. The problems considered in this article are path cover problem, induced path cover problem, isometric path cover problem, path partition problem, induced path partition problem and isometric path partition problem. The objective of this article is to summarize the recent developments on these problems, classify their literatures and correlate the inter-relationship among the related concepts.

Stability for vertex isoperimetry in the cube
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a stability version of Harper's cube vertex isoperimetric inequality, showing that subsets of the cube with vertex boundary close to the minimum possible are close to (generalised) Hamming balls. Furthermore, we obtain a local stability result for ball-like sets that gives a sharp estimate for the vertex boundary in terms of the distance from a ball, and so our stability result is essentially tight (modulo a non-monotonicity phenomenon). We also give similar results for the Kruskal--Katona Theorem and applications to new stability versions of some other results in Extremal Combinatorics.

The bandwidth theorem for locally dense graphs
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 8 (2020) e42 • View Publication • BIB
The Bandwidth theorem of Böttcher, Schacht and Taraz gives a condition on the minimum degree of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ that ensures $G$ contains every $r$-chromatic graph $H$ on $n$ vertices of bounded degree and of bandwidth $o(n)$, thereby proving a conjecture of Bollobás and Komlós. In this paper we prove a version of the Bandwidth theorem for locally dense graphs. Indeed, we prove that every locally dense $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $δ(G) > (1/2+o(1))n$ contains as a subgraph any given (spanning) $H$ with bounded maximum degree and sublinear bandwidth.

Pattern Avoidance in Set Partitions
A set partition avoids a pattern if no subdivision of that partition standardizes to the pattern. There exists a bijection between set partitions and restricted growth functions (RGFs) on which Wachs and White defined four statistics of interest to this work. We first characterize the restricted growth functions of several avoidance classes based on partitions of size four, enumerate these avoidance classes, and consider the distribution of the Wachs and White statistics across these avoidance classes. We also investigate the equidistribution of statistics between avoidance classes based on multiple patterns.

Minimal Binary $2$-Neighbour-Transitive Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The main result here is a characterisation of binary $2$-neighbour-transitive codes with minimum distance at least $5$ via their minimal subcodes, which are found to be generated by certain designs. The motivation for studying this class of codes comes primarily from their relationship to the class of completely regular codes. The results contained here yield many more examples of $2$-neighbour-transitive codes than previous classification results of families of $2$-neighbour-transitive codes. In the process, new lower bounds on the minimum distance of particular sub-families are produced. Several results on the structure of $2$-neighbour-transitive codes with arbitrary alphabet size are also proved. The proofs of the main results apply the classification of minimal and pre-minimal submodules of the permutation modules over $\mathbb{F}_2$ for finite $2$-transitive permutation groups.

Diffusion and consensus on weakly connected directed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a weakly connected directed graph with asymmetric graph Laplacian ${\cal L}$. Consensus and diffusion are dual dynamical processes defined on $G$ by $\dot x=-{\cal L}x$ for consensus and $\dot p=-p{\cal L}$ for diffusion. We consider both these processes as well their discrete time analogues. We define a basis of row vectors $\{\bar γ_i\}_{i=1}^k$ of the left null-space of ${\cal L}$ and a basis of column vectors $\{γ_i\}_{i=1}^k$ of the right null-space of ${\cal L}$ in terms of the partition of $G$ into strongly connected components. This allows for complete characterization of the asymptotic behavior of both diffusion and consensus --- discrete and continuous --- in terms of these eigenvectors. As an application of these ideas, we present a treatment of the pagerank algorithm that is dual to the usual one. We further show that the teleporting feature usually included in the algorithm is not strictly necessary. This is a complete and self-contained treatment of the asymptotics of consensus and diffusion on digraphs. Many of the ideas presented here can be found scattered in the literature, though mostly outside mainstream mathematics and not always with complete proofs. This paper seeks to remedy this by providing a compact and accessible survey.

Metastability of the contact process on fast evolving scale-free networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the contact process in the regime of small infection rates on finite scale-free networks with stationary dynamics based on simultaneous updating of all connections of a vertex. We allow the update rates of individual vertices to increase with the strength of a vertex, leading to a fast evolution of the network. We first develop an approach for inhomogeneous networks with general kernel and then focus on two canonical cases, the factor kernel and the preferential attachment kernel. For these specific networks we identify and analyse four possible strategies how the infection can survive for a long time. We show that there is fast extinction of the infection when neither of the strategies is successful, otherwise there is slow extinction and the most successful strategy determines the asymptotics of the metastable density as the infection rate goes to zero. We identify the domains in which these strategies dominate in terms of phase diagrams for the exponent describing the decay of the metastable density.

On a reduction of the weighted induced bipartite subgraph problem to the weighted independent set problem
We study the weighted induced bipartite subgraph problem (WIBSP). The goal of WIBSP is, given a graph and nonnegative weights for the nodes, to find a set W of nodes with the maximum total weight such that a subgraph induced by W is bipartite. WIBSP is also referred as to the graph bipartization problem or the odd cycle transversal problem. In this paper, we show that WIBSP can be reduced to the weighted independent set problem (WISP) where the number of nodes becomes twice and the maximum degree increase by 1. WISP is a well-studied combinatorial optimization problem. Thus, by using the reduction and results about WISP, we can obtain nontrivial approximation and exact algorithms for WIBSP.

On the number of simultaneous core partitions with $d$-distinct parts
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the number $N_{d,r}(s)$ of $(s, s+r)$-core integer partitions with $d$-distinct parts. Our first main result is a proof of a recurrence relation conjectured by Sahin in 2018. We also derive generating functions, asymptotics, and exact formulas for $N_{d,r}(s)$ when $r$ is within $d$ of a multiple of $s$. Finally, we exhibit a surprising connection to $A$-restricted compositions.

Note on the zero-free region of the hard-core model
In this paper we prove a new zero-free region for the partition function of the hard-core model, that is, the independence polynomials of graphs with largest degree $Δ$. This new domain contains the half disk $$D=\left\{ λ\in \mathbb{C}\ |\ \mathrm{Re}(λ)\geq 0, |λ|\leq \frac{7}{8}\tan \left( \fracπ{2(Δ-1)}\right)\right\}.$$

On the equality of the induced matching number and the uniquely restricted matching number for subcubic graphs
For a matching $M$ in a graph $G$, let $G(M)$ be the subgraph of $G$ induced by the vertices of $G$ that are incident with an edge in $M$. The matching $M$ is induced, if $G(M)$ is $1$-regular, and $M$ is uniquely restricted, if $M$ is the unique perfect matching of $G(M)$. The induced matching number $ν_s(G)$ of $G$ is the largest size of an induced matching in $G$, and the uniquely restricted matching number $ν_{ur}(G)$ of $G$ is the largest size of a uniquely restricted matching in $G$. Golumbic, Hirst, and Lewenstein (Uniquely restricted matchings, Algorithmica 31 (2001) 139-154) posed the problem to characterize the graphs $G$ with $ν_s(G)=ν_{ur}(G)$. We give a complete characterization of the $2$-connected subcubic graphs $G$ of sufficiently large order with $ν_s(G)=ν_{ur}(G)$. As a consequence, we are able to show that the subcubic graphs $G$ with $ν_s(G)=ν_{ur}(G)$ can be recognized in polynomial time.

The periodic Schur process and free fermions at finite temperature
Published in Math Phys Anal Geom (2019) 22: 3 • View Publication • BIB
We revisit the periodic Schur process introduced by Borodin in 2007. Our contribution is threefold. First, we provide a new simpler derivation of its correlation functions via the free fermion formalism. In particular, we shall see that the process becomes determinantal by passing to the grand canonical ensemble, which gives a physical explanation to Borodin's "shift-mixing" trick. Second, we consider the edge scaling limit in the simplest nontrivial case, corresponding to a deformation of the poissonized Plancherel measure on partitions. We show that the edge behavior is described, in a certain crossover regime different from that for the bulk, by the universal finite-temperature Airy kernel, which was previously encountered by Johansson and Le Doussal et al. in other models, and whose extreme value statistics interpolates between the Tracy-Widom GUE and the Gumbel distributions. We also define and prove convergence for a stationary extension of our model. Finally, we compute the correlation functions for a variant of the periodic Schur process involving strict partitions, Schur's P and Q functions, and neutral fermions.

On critical and maximal digraphs
This paper is devoted to the study of directed graphs with extremal properties relative to certain metric functionals. We characterize up to isomorphism critical digraphs with infinite values of diameter, quasi-diameter, radius and quasi-radius. Moreover, maximal digraphs with finite values of radius and quasi-diameter are studied.
