Bounding the Number of Minimal Transversals in Tripartite 3-Uniform Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We bound the number of minimal hypergraph transversals that arise in tri-partite 3-uniform hypergraphs, a class commonly found in applications dealing with data. Let H be such a hypergraph on a set of vertices V. We give a lower bound of 1.4977 |V | and an upper bound of 1.5012 |V | .

Connected greedy coloring $H$-free graphs
A connected ordering $(v_1, v_2, \ldots, v_n)$ of $V(G)$ is an ordering of the vertices such that $v_i$ has at least one neighbour in $\{v_1, \ldots, v_{i - 1}\}$ for every $i \in \{2, \ldots, n\}$. A connected greedy coloring (CGC for short) is a coloring obtained by applying the greedy algorithm to a connected ordering. This has been first introduced in 1989 by Hertz and de Werra, but still very little is known about this problem. An interesting aspect is that, contrary to the traditional greedy coloring, it is not always true that a graph has a connected ordering that produces an optimal coloring; this motivates the definition of the connected chromatic number of $G$, which is the smallest value $χ_c(G)$ such that there exists a CGC of $G$ with $χ_c(G)$ colors. An even more interesting fact is that $χ_c(G) \le χ(G)+1$ for every graph $G$ (Benevides et. al. 2014). In this paper, in the light of the dichotomy for the coloring problem restricted to $H$-free graphs given by Král et.al. in 2001, we are interested in investigating the problems of, given an $H$-free graph $G$: (1). deciding whether $χ_c(G)=χ(G)$; and (2). given also a positive integer $k$, deciding whether $χ_c(G)\le k$. We have proved that Problem (2) has the same dichotomy as the coloring problem (i.e., it is polynomial when $H$ is an induced subgraph of $P_4$ or of $P_3+K_1$, and it is NP-complete otherwise). As for Problem (1), we have proved that $χ_c(G) = χ(G)$ always hold when $G$ is an induced subgraph of $P_5$ or of $P_4+K_1$, and that it is NP-hard to decide whether $χ_c(G)=χ(G)$ when $H$ is not a linear forest or contains an induced $P_9$. We mention that some of the results actually involve fixed $k$ and fixed $χ(G)$.

Generalized $k$-regular sequences III: Arithmetical properties of generalized $k$-regular series
Let $F(z)$ be a $k$-regular series in $\mathbb{Z}[[z]]$ and $b$ be an integer with $b\ge2$. Bell, Bugeaud and Coons [BelBC] proved that $F(\frac{1}{b})$ is either rational or transcendental. In [Mi], we introduce a generalized $k$-regular sequence as a unification of several kinds of important sequences including $k$-regular, $k$-additive and $k$-multiplicative sequences. In this paper, we give a generalization of the result of Bell, Bugeaud and Coons for certain generalized $k$-regular series. Especially, we show that the values of irrational generating functions of certain sum of $k$-additive sequences and certain $k$-multiplicative sequences are either rational or transcendental. Moreover, we also give a partly generalization of a result obtained by Tachiya[Ta]. Especially, we show that the values of irrational generating functions of certain $k$-additive sequences and certain $k$-multiplicative sequences give transcendental numbers.

The Möbius function of ${\rm PSU}(3,2^{2^n})$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be the simple group ${\rm PSU}(2,2^{2^n})$, $n>0$. For any subgroup $H$ of $G$, we compute the Möbius function $μ_L(H,G)$ of $H$ in the subgroup lattice $L$ of $G$, and the Möbius function $μ_{\bar L}([H],[G])$ of $[H]$ in the poset $\bar L$ of conjugacy classes of subgroups of $G$. For any prime $p$, we provide the Euler characteristic of the order complex of the poset of $p$-subgroups of $G$.

Cameron-Liebler line classes of ${\rm PG}(3,q)$ admitting ${\rm PGL}(2,q)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we describe an infinite family of Cameron-Liebler line classes of ${\rm PG}(3,q)$ with parameter $(q^2 + 1)/2$, $q\equiv 1\pmod{4}$. The example obtained admits ${\rm PGL}(2,q)$ as an automorphism group and it is shown to be isomorphic to none of the infinite families known so far whenever $q \ge 9$.

Minimum supports of functions on the Hamming graphs with spectral constraints
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study functions defined on the vertices of the Hamming graphs $H(n,q)$. The adjacency matrix of $H(n,q)$ has $n+1$ distinct eigenvalues $n(q-1)-q\cdot i$ with corresponding eigenspaces $U_{i}(n,q)$ for $0\leq i\leq n$. In this work, we consider the problem of finding the minimum possible support (the number of nonzeros) of functions belonging to a direct sum $U_i(n,q)\oplus U_{i+1}(n,q)\oplus\ldots\oplus U_j(n,q)$ for $0\leq i\leq j\leq n$. For the case $n\geq i+j$ and $q\geq 3$ we find the minimum cardinality of the support of such functions and obtain a characterization of functions with the minimum cardinality of the support. In the case $n<i+j$ and $q\geq 4$ we also find the minimum cardinality of the support of functions, and obtain a characterization of functions with the minimum cardinality of the support for $i=j$, $n<2i$ and $q\geq 5$. In particular, we characterize eigenfunctions from the eigenspace $U_{i}(n,q)$ with the minimum cardinality of the support for cases $i\le \frac{n}{2}$,$q\ge 3$ and $i> \frac{n}{2}$,$\,q\ge 5$.

The realization problem for discrete Morse functions on trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new notion of equivalence of discrete Morse functions on graphs called persistence equivalence. Two functions are considered persistence equivalent if and only if they induce the same persistence diagram. We compare this notion of equivalence to other notions of equivalent discrete Morse functions. We then compute an upper bound for the number of persistence equivalent discrete Morse functions on a fixed graph and show that this upper bound is sharp in the case where our graph is a tree. This is a version of the "realization problem" of the persistence map. We conclude with an example illustrating our construction.

Noncommutative Shifted Symmetric Functions
Published in Moscow Mathematical Journal, Volume 20, Issue 1, January--March 2020 pp. 93--126 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a ring of noncommutative shifted symmetric functions based on an integer-indexed sequence of shift parameters. Using generating series and quasideterminants, this multiparameter approach produces deformations of the ring of noncommutative symmetric functions. Shifted versions of ribbon Schur functions are defined and form a basis for the ring. Further, we produce analogues of Jacobi-Trudi and Nägelsbach-Kostka formulas, a duality anti-algebra isomorphism, shifted quasi-Schur functions, and Giambelli's formula in this setup. In addition, an analogue of power sums is provided, satisfying versions of Wronski and Newton formulas. Finally, a realization of these noncommutative shifted symmetric functions as rational functions in noncommuting variables is given. These realizations have a shifted symmetry under exchange of the variables and are well-behaved under extension of the list of variables.

Combinatorics of the Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian is a refinement of the Schubert, Richardson, and positroid stratifications of the Grassmannian. Go-diagrams are certain fillings of Ferrers diagrams with black stones, white stones, and pluses which index Deodhar components in the Grassmannian. We provide a series of corrective flips on diagrams which may be used to transform arbitrary fillings of Ferrers shapes with black stones, white stones, and pluses into a Go-diagram. This provides an extension of Lam and Williams' Le-moves for transforming reduced diagrams into Le-diagrams to the context of non-reduced diagrams. Next, we address the question of describing when the closure of one Deodhar component is contained in the closure of another. We show that if one Go-diagram $D$ is obtained from another $D'$ by replacing certain stones with pluses, then applying corrective flips, that there is a containment of closures of the associated Deodhar components, $\overline{\mathcal{D}'} \subset \overline{\mathcal{D}}$. Finally, we address the question of verifying whether an arbitrary filling of a Ferrers shape with black stones, white stones, and pluses is a Go-diagram. We show that no reasonable description of the class of Go-diagrams in terms of forbidden subdiagrams can exist by providing an injection from the set of valid Go-diagrams to the set of minimal forbidden subdiagrams for the class of Go-diagrams. In lieu of such a description, we offer an inductive characterization of the class of Go-diagrams.

Reciprocals of exponential polynomials and permutation enumeration
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics 74 (2) (2019) 364-370 • Search Publication
We show that the reciprocal of a partial sum with 2m terms of the alternating exponential series is the exponential generating function for permutations in which every increasing run has length congruent to 0 or 1 modulo 2m. More generally we study polynomials whose reciprocals are exponential generating functions for permutations whose run lengths are restricted to certain congruence classes, and extend these results to noncommutative symmetric functions that count words with the same restrictions on run lengths.

The Warden's de Bruijn Sequence
The Warden's Game is a 2-player game, played with a row of coins. One player (the prisoner) wants to get all coins to show tails; the other player (the warden) wants to delay that as long as possible. At each turn, one player transfers the coin on the far right to the far left, and optionally flips that coin; the prisoner transfers heads, and the warden transfers tails. We will find the optimal strategies for both players, and we will also analyze some variations on this game.

An improved bound for the length of matrix algebras
Published in Alg. Number Th. 13 (2019) 1501-1507 • View Publication • BIB
Let $S$ be a set of $n\times n$ matrices over a field $\mathbb{F}$. We show that the $\mathbb{F}$-linear span of the words in $S$ of length at most $$2n\log_2n+4n$$ is the full $\mathbb{F}$-algebra generated by $S$. This improves on the $n^2/3+2/3$ bound by Paz (1984) and an $O\left(n^{1.5}\right)$ bound of Pappacena (1997).

A tiling proof of Euler's pentagnal number theorem and generalizations
Published • View Publication • BIB
In two papers, Little and Sellers introduced an exciting new combinatorial method for proving partition identities which is not directly bijective. Instead, they consider various sets of weighted tilings of a $1 \times \infty$ board with squares and dominoes, and for each type of tiling they construct a generating function in two different ways, which generates a $q$-series identity. Using this method, they recover quite a few classical $q$-series identities, but Euler's Pentagonal Number Theorem is not among them. In this paper, we introduce a key parameter when constructing the generating functions of various sets of tilings which allows us to recover Euler's Pentagonal Number Theorem along with an infinite family of generalizations.

We construct injective hulls and projective covers in categories of generalized uniform hypergraphs which generalizes the constructions in the category of quivers and the category of undirected graphs. While the constructions are not functorial, they are "sub-functorial", meaning they are subobjects of functorial injective and projective refinements.

On induced Ramsey numbers for multiple copies of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We say that a graph F strongly arrows a pair of graphs (G,H) if any colouring of its edges with red and blue leads to either a red G or a blue H appearing as induced subgraphs of F. The induced Ramsey number, IR(G,H) is defined as the smallest order of a graph that strongly arrows (G,H). We consider the connection between the induced Ramsey number for a pair of two connected graphs IR(G,H) and the induced Ramsey number for multiple copies of these graphs IR(sG,tH), where xG denotes the pairwise vertex-disjoint union of x copies of G. It is easy to see that if F strongly arrow (G,H), then (s+t-1)F strongly arrows (sG, tH). This implies that IR(sG, tH) is at most (s+t-1)IR(G,H). For all known results on induced Ramsey numbers for multiple copies, the inequality above holds as equality. We show that there are infinite classes of graphs for which the inequality above is strict and moreover, IR(sG, tH) could be arbitrarily smaller than (s+t-1)IR(G,H). On the other hand, we provide further examples of classes of graphs for which the inequality above holds as equality.

Chromatic roots at 2 and at the Beraha number $B_{10}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
By the construction of suitable graphs and the determination of their chromatic polynomials, we resolve two open questions concerning real chromatic roots. First we exhibit graphs for which the Beraha number $B_{10} = (5 + \sqrt{5})/2$ is a chromatic root. As it was previously known that no other non-integer Beraha number is a chromatic root, this completes the determination of precisely which Beraha numbers can be chromatic roots. Next we construct an infinite family of $3$-connected graphs such that for any $k \geqslant 1$, there is a member of the family with $q=2$ as a chromatic root of multiplicity at least $k$. The former resolves a question of Salas and Sokal [J. Statist. Pys. 104 (2001) pp. 609--699] and the latter a question of Dong and Koh [J. Graph Theory 70 (2012) pp. 262--283].

Predicting the Integer Decomposition Property via Machine Learning
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we investigate the ability of a neural network to approximate algebraic properties associated to lattice simplices. In particular we attempt to predict the distribution of Hilbert basis elements in the fundamental parallelepiped, from which we detect the integer decomposition property (IDP). We give a gentle introduction to neural networks and discuss the results of this prediction method when scanning very large test sets for examples of IDP simplices.

Tree decompositions of graphs without large bipartite holes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A recent result of Condon, Kim, Kühn and Osthus implies that for any $r\geq (\frac{1}{2}+o(1))n$, an $n$-vertex almost $r$-regular graph $G$ has an approximate decomposition into any collections of $n$-vertex bounded degree trees. In this paper, we prove that a similar result holds for an almost $αn$-regular graph $G$ with any $α>0$ and a collection of bounded degree trees on at most $(1-o(1))n$ vertices if $G$ does not contain large bipartite holes. This result is sharp in the sense that it is necessary to exclude large bipartite holes and we cannot hope for an approximate decomposition into $n$-vertex trees. Moreover, this implies that for any $α>0$ and an $n$-vertex almost $αn$-regular graph $G$, with high probability, the randomly perturbed graph $G\cup \mathbf{G}(n,O(\frac{1}{n}))$ has an approximate decomposition into all collections of bounded degree trees of size at most $(1-o(1))n$ simultaneously. This is the first result considering an approximate decomposition problem in the context of Ramsey-Turán theory and the randomly perturbed graph model.
