Proof of a Conjecture of Reiner-Tenner-Yong on Barely Set-valued Tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
The notion of a barely set-valued semistandard Young tableau was introduced by Reiner, Tenner and Yong in their study of the probability distribution of edges in the Young lattice of partitions. Given a partition $λ$ and a positive integer $k$, let ${\mathrm{BSSYT}}(λ,k)$ (respectively, ${\mathrm{SYT}}(λ,k)$) denote the set of barely set-valued semistandard Young tableaux (respectively, ordinary semistandard Young tableaux) of shape $λ$ with entries in row $i$ not exceeding $k+i$. In the case when $λ$ is a rectangular staircase partition $δ_d(b^a)$, Reiner, Tenner and Yong conjectured that $|{\mathrm{BSSYT}}(λ,k)|= \frac{kab(d-1)}{(a+b)} |{\mathrm{SYT}}(λ,k)|$. In this paper, we establish a connection between barely set-valued tableaux and reverse plane partitions with designated corners. We show that for any shape $λ$, the expected jaggedness of a subshape of $λ$ under the weak probability distribution can be expressed as $\frac{2|{\mathrm{BSSYT}}(λ,k)|} {k|{\mathrm{SYT}}(λ,k)|}$. On the other hand, when $λ$ is a balanced shape with $r$ rows and $c$ columns, Chan, Haddadan, Hopkins and Moci proved that the expected jaggedness of a subshape in $λ$ under the weak distribution equals $2rc/(r+c)$. Hence, for a balanced shape $λ$ with $r$ rows and $c$ columns, we establish the relation that $|{\mathrm{BSSYT}}(λ,k)|=\frac{krc}{(r+c)}|{\mathrm{SYT}}(λ,k)|$. Since a rectangular staircase shape $δ_d(b^a)$ is a balanced shape, we confirm the conjecture of Reiner, Tenner and Yong.
On the Geodetic Hull Number of Complementary Prisms
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite, simple, and undirected graph and let $S$ be a set of vertices of $G$. In the geodetic convexity, a set of vertices $S$ of a graph $G$ is convex if all vertices belonging to any shortest path between two vertices of $S$ lie in $S$. The convex hull $H(S)$ of $S$ is the smallest convex set containing $S$. If $H(S) = V(G)$, then $S$ is a hull set. The cardinality $h(G)$ of a minimum hull set of $G$ is the hull number of $G$. The complementary prism $G\overline{G}$ of a graph $G$ arises from the disjoint union of the graph $G$ and $\overline{G}$ by adding the edges of a perfect matching between the corresponding vertices of $G$ and $\overline{G}$. Motivated by previous work, we determine and present lower and upper bounds on the hull number of complementary prisms of trees, disconnected graphs and cographs. We also show that the hull number on complementary prisms cannot be limited in the geodetic convexity, unlike the $P_3$-convexity.

An interesting class of Hankel determinants
Published • View Publication • BIB
For small $r$ the Hankel determinants $d_r(n)$ of the sequence $\left({2n+r\choose n}\right)_{n\ge 0}$ are easy to guess and show an interesting modular pattern. For arbitrary $r$ and $n$ no closed formulae are known, but for each positive integer $r$ the special values $d_r(rn)$, $d_r(rn+1)$, and $d_r(rn+\lfloor\frac{r+1}{2}\rfloor)$ have nice values which will be proved in this paper.

Metric dimension and pattern avoidance in graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove a number of results about pattern avoidance in graphs with bounded metric dimension or edge metric dimension. We show that the maximum possible number of edges in a graph of diameter $D$ and edge metric dimension $k$ is at most $(\lfloor \frac{2D}{3}\rfloor +1)^{k}+k \sum_{i = 1}^{\lceil \frac{D}{3}\rceil } (2i)^{k-1}$, sharpening the bound of $\binom{k}{2}+k D^{k-1}+D^{k}$ from Zubrilina (2018). We also show that the maximum value of $n$ for which some graph of metric dimension $\leq k$ contains the complete graph $K_{n}$ as a subgraph is $n = 2^{k}$. We prove that the maximum value of $n$ for which some graph of metric dimension $\leq k$ contains the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ as a subgraph is $2^{Θ(k)}$. Furthermore, we show that the maximum value of $n$ for which some graph of edge metric dimension $\leq k$ contains $K_{1,n}$ as a subgraph is $n = 2^{k}$. We also show that the maximum value of $n$ for which some graph of metric dimension $\leq k$ contains $K_{1,n}$ as a subgraph is $3^{k}-O(k)$. In addition, we prove that the $d$-dimensional grids $\prod_{i = 1}^{d} P_{r_{i}}$ have edge metric dimension at most $d$. This generalizes two results of Kelenc et al. (2016), that non-path grids have edge metric dimension $2$ and that $d$-dimensional hypercubes have edge metric dimension at most $d$. We also provide a characterization of $n$-vertex graphs with edge metric dimension $n-2$, answering a question of Zubrilina. As a result of this characterization, we prove that any connected $n$-vertex graph $G$ such that $edim(G) = n-2$ has diameter at most $5$. More generally, we prove that any connected $n$-vertex graph with edge metric dimension $n-k$ has diameter at most $3k-1$.

Lattices with many congruences are planar
Let $L$ be an $n$-element finite lattice. We prove that if $L$ has strictly more than $2^{n-5}$ congruences, then $L$ is planar. This result is sharp, since for each natural number $n\geq 8$, there exists a non-planar lattice with exactly $2^{n-5}$ congruences.

How to sample connected $K$-partitions of a graph
A connected undirected graph $G=(V,E)$ is given. This paper presents an algorithm that samples (non-uniformly) a $K$ partition $U_1,\ldots U_K$ of the graph nodes $V$, such that the subgraph induced by each $U_k$, with $k=1:K$, is connected. Moreover, the probability induced by the algorithm over the set ${\mathcal C}_K$ of all such partitions is obtained in closed form.

How to Build a Graph in n Days: Some Variants on Graph Assembly
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a recent article by M. Bona and A. Vince, the authors introduced the concept of an assembly tree for a graph. Assembly trees act as record keeping devices for the construction of a given graph from its vertices. In this paper we extend the work initiated by M. Bona and A. Vince as well as define and examine a more generalized definition of assembly tree.
$3$-tuple total domination number of rook's graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-tuple total dominating set ($k$TDS) of a graph $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices in which every vertex in $G$ is adjacent to at least $k$ vertices in $S$. The minimum size of a $k$TDS is called the $k$-tuple total dominating number and it is denoted by $γ_{\times k,t}(G)$. We give a constructive proof of a general formula for $γ_{\times 3, t}(K_n \Box K_m)$.

On the $α$-spectral radius of uniform hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For $0\leα<1$ and a uniform hypergraph $G$, the $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest $H$-eigenvalue of $α\mathcal{D}(G) +(1-α)\mathcal{A}(G)$, where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ and $\mathcal{A}(G)$ are the diagonal tensor of degrees and the adjacency tensor of $G$, respectively. We give upper bounds for the $α$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph, propose some transformations that increase the $α$-spectral radius, and determine the unique hypergraphs with maximum $α$-spectral radius in some classes of uniform hypergraphs.

$S_{12}$ and $P_{12}$-colorings of cubic graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
If $G$ and $H$ are two cubic graphs, then an $H$-coloring of $G$ is a proper edge-coloring $f$ with edges of $H$, such that for each vertex $x$ of $G$, there is a vertex $y$ of $H$ with $f(\partial_G(x))=\partial_H(y)$. If $G$ admits an $H$-coloring, then we will write $H\prec G$. The Petersen coloring conjecture of Jaeger ($P_{10}$-conjecture) states that for any bridgeless cubic graph $G$, one has: $P_{10}\prec G$. The Sylvester coloring conjecture ($S_{10}$-conjecture) states that for any cubic graph $G$, $S_{10}\prec G$. In this paper, we introduce two new conjectures that are related to these conjectures. The first of them states that any cubic graph with a perfect matching admits an $S_{12}$-coloring. The second one states that any cubic graph $G$ whose edge-set can be covered with four perfect matchings, admits a $P_{12}$-coloring. We call these new conjectures $S_{12}$-conjecture and $P_{12}$-conjecture, respectively. Our first results justify the choice of graphs in $S_{12}$-conjecture and $P_{12}$-conjecture. Next, we characterize the edges of $P_{12}$ that may be fictive in a $P_{12}$-coloring of a cubic graph $G$. Finally, we relate the new conjectures to the already known conjectures by proving that $S_{12}$-conjecture implies $S_{10}$-conjecture, and $P_{12}$-conjecture and $(5,2)$-Cycle cover conjecture together imply $P_{10}$-conjecture. Our main tool for proving the latter statement is a new reformulation of $(5,2)$-Cycle cover conjecture, which states that the edge-set of any claw-free bridgeless cubic graph can be covered with four perfect matchings.

On the anti-forcing number of graph powers
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple connected graph. A perfect matching (or Kekulé structure in chemical literature) of $G$ is a set of disjoint edges which covers all vertices of $G$. The anti-forcing number of $G$ is the smallest number of edges such that the remaining graph obtained by deleting these edges has a unique perfect matching and is denoted by $af(G)$. For every $m\in\mathbb{N}$, the $m$th power of $G$, denoted by $G^m$, is a graph with the same vertex set as $G$ such that two vertices are adjacent in $G^m$ if and only if their distance is at most $m$ in $G$. In this paper, we study the anti-forcing number of the powers of some graphs.

DP-Colorings of Hypergraphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 78, 2019, 134-146 • View Publication • BIB
Classical problems in hypergraph coloring theory are to estimate the minimum number of edges, $m_2(r)$ (respectively, $m^\ast_2(r)$), in a non-$2$-colorable $r$-uniform (respectively, $r$-uniform and simple) hypergraph. The best currently known bounds are \[c \cdot \sqrt{r/\log r} \cdot 2^r \,\leqslant\, m_2(r) \,\leqslant\, C \cdot r^2 \cdot 2^r \qquad \text{and} \qquad c' \cdot r^{-\varepsilon} \cdot 4^r \,\leqslant\, m_2^\ast(r) \,\leqslant\, C' \cdot r^4 \cdot 4^r,\] for any fixed $\varepsilon > 0$ and some $c$, $c'$, $C$, $C' > 0$ (where $c'$ may depend on $\varepsilon$). In this paper we consider the same problems in the context of DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring), which is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvořák and Postle and related to local conflict coloring studied independently by Fraigniaud, Heinrich, and Kosowski. Let $\tilde{m}_2(r)$ (respectively, $\tilde{m}^\ast_2(r)$) denote the minimum number of edges in a non-$2$-DP-colorable $r$-uniform (respectively, $r$-uniform and simple) hypergraph. By definition, $\tilde{m}_2(r) \leqslant m_2(r)$ and $\tilde{m}^\ast_2(r)\leqslant m^\ast_2(r)$. While the proof of the bound $m^\ast_2(r) = Ω( r^{-3} 4^r)$ due to Erdős and Lovász also works for $\tilde{m}^\ast_2(r)$, we show that the trivial lower bound $\tilde{m}_2(r) \geqslant 2^{r-1}$ is asymptotically tight, i.e., $\tilde{m}_2(r) \leqslant (1 + o(1))2^{r-1}$. On the other hand, when $r \geqslant 2$ is even, we prove that the lower bound $\tilde{m}_2(r) \geqslant 2^{r-1}$ is not sharp, i.e., $\tilde{m}_2(r) \geqslant 2^{r-1}+1$. Whether this result holds for any odd values of $r$ remains an open problem. Nevertheless, we conjecture that the difference $\tilde{m}_2(r) - 2^{r-1}$ can be arbitrarily large.
Counting odd numbers in truncations of Pascal's triangle
A "truncation" of Pascal's triangle is a triangular array of numbers that satisfies the usual Pascal recurrence but with a boundary condition that declares some terminal set of numbers along each row of the array to be zero. Presented here is a family of natural truncations of Pascal's triangle that generalize a kind of Catalan triangle. The numbers in each array are realized as differences of binomial coefficients, as counts of certain lattice paths and tableaux, and as entries of representing matrices for certain linear transformations of polynomial spaces. Lucas's theorem is applied to determine precisely those truncations for which the number of odd entries on each row is a power of two.

On the usage of lines in $GC_n$ sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
A planar node set $\mathcal X,$ with $|\mathcal X|=\binom{n+2}{2}$ is called $GC_n$ set if each node possesses fundamental polynomial in form of a product of $n$ linear factors. We say that a node uses a line $Ax+By+C=0$ if $Ax+By+C$ divides the fundamental polynomial of the node. A line is called $k$-node line if it passes through exactly $k$-nodes of $\mathcal X.$ At most $n+1$ nodes can be collinear in $GC_n$ sets and an $(n+1)$-node line is called maximal line. The Gasca - Maeztu conjecture (1982) states that every $GC_n$ set has a maximal line. Until now the conjecture has been proved only for the cases $n \le 5.$ Here we adjust and prove a conjecture proposed in the paper - V. Bayramyan, H. H., Adv Comput Math, 43: 607-626, 2017. Namely, by assuming that the Gasca-Maeztu conjecture is true, we prove that for any $GC_n$ set $\mathcal X$ and any $k$-node line $\ell$ the following statement holds: Either the line $\ell$ is not used at all, or it is used by exactly $\binom{s}{2}$ nodes of $\mathcal X,$ where $s$ satisfies the condition $σ:=2k-n-1\le s\le k.$ If in addition $σ\ge 3$ and $μ(\mathcal X)>3$ then the first case here is excluded, i.e., the line $\ell$ is necessarily a used line. Here $μ(\mathcal X)$ denotes the number of maximal lines of $\mathcal X.$ At the end, we bring a characterization for the usage of $k$-node lines in $GC_n$ sets when $σ=2$ and $μ(\mathcal X)>3.$
Arithmetic aspects of symmetric edge polytopes
Published in Mathematika 65 (2019) 763-784 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate arithmetic, geometric and combinatorial properties of symmetric edge polytopes. We give a complete combinatorial description of their facets. By combining Gröbner basis techniques, half-open decompositions and methods for interlacing polynomials we provide an explicit formula for the $h^\ast$-polynomial in case of complete bipartite graphs. In particular, we show that the $h^\ast$-polynomial is $γ$-positive and real-rooted. This proves Gal's conjecture for arbitrary flag unimodular triangulations in this case, and, beyond that, we prove a strengthing due to Nevo and Petersen (2011).

A characterization and an application of weight-regular partitions of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A natural generalization of a regular (or equitable) partition of a graph, which makes sense also for non-regular graphs, is the so-called weight-regular partition, which gives to each vertex $u\in V$ a weight that equals the corresponding entry $ν_u$ of the Perron eigenvector $\mathbfν$. This paper contains three main results related to weight-regular partitions of a graph. The first is a characterization of weight-regular partitions in terms of double stochastic matrices. Inspired by a characterization of regular graphs by Hoffman, we also provide a new characterization of weight-regularity by using a Hoffman-like polynomial. As a corollary, we obtain Hoffman's result for regular graphs. In addition, we show an application of weight-regular partitions to study graphs that attain equality in the classical Hoffman's lower bound for the chromatic number of a graph, and we show that weight-regularity provides a condition under which Hoffman's bound can be improved.

$(k,λ)$-Anti-Powers and Other Patterns in Words
Published in Electron. J. Comb. 25:4 (2018) #P4.41 • View Publication • BIB
Given a word, we are interested in the structure of its contiguous subwords split into $k$ blocks of equal length, especially in the homogeneous and anti-homogeneous cases. We introduce the notion of $(μ_1,\dots,μ_k)$-block-patterns, words of the form $w = w_1\cdots w_k$ where, when $\{w_1,\dots,w_k\}$ is partitioned via equality, there are $μ_s$ sets of size $s$ for each $s \in \{1,\dots,k\}$. This is a generalization of the well-studied $k$-powers and the $k$-anti-powers recently introduced by Fici, Restivo, Silva, and Zamboni, as well as a refinement of the $(k,λ)$-anti-powers introduced by Defant. We generalize the anti-Ramsey-type results of Fici et al. to $(μ_1,\dots,μ_k)$-block-patterns and improve their bounds on $N_α(k,k)$, the minimum length such that every word of length $N_α(k,k)$ on an alphabet of size $α$ contains a $k$-power or $k$-anti-power. We also generalize their results on infinite words avoiding $k$-anti-powers to the case of $(k,λ)$-anti-powers. We provide a few results on the relation between $α$ and $N_α(k,k)$ and find the expected number of $(μ_1,\dots,μ_k)$-block-patterns in a word of length $n$.

On graphs with 2 trivial distance ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Distance ideals generalize the Smith normal form of the distance matrix of a graph. The family of graphs with 2 trivial distance ideals contains the family of graphs whose distance matrix has at most 2 invariant factors equal to 1. Here we give an infinite family of forbidden induced subgraphs for the graphs with 2 trivial distance ideals. These are also related with other well known graph classes.

On ideals generated by fold products of linear forms
Let $\mathbb K$ be a field of characteristic 0. Given $n$ linear forms in $R=\mathbb K[x_1,\ldots,x_k]$, with no two proportional, in one of our main results we show that the ideal $I\subset R$ generated by all $(n-2)$-fold products of these linear forms has linear graded free resolution. This result helps determining a complete set of generators of the symmetric ideal of $I$. Via Sylvester forms we can analyze from a different perspective the generators of the presentation ideal of the Orlik-Terao algebra of the second order; this is the algebra generated by the reciprocals of the products of any two (distinct) of the linear forms considered. We also show that when $k=2$, and when the collection of $n$ linear forms may contain proportional linear forms, for any $1\leq a\leq n$, the ideal generated by $a$-fold products of these linear forms has linear graded free resolution.
Factorization patterns on nonlinear families of univariate polynomials over a finite field
Published • View Publication • BIB
We estimate the number $|\mathcal{A}_{\boldsymbolλ}|$ of elements on a nonlinear family $\mathcal{A}$ of monic polynomials of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ of degree $r$ having factorization pattern $\boldsymbolλ:=1^{λ_1}2^{λ_2}\cdots r^{λ_r}$. We show that $|\mathcal{A}_{\boldsymbolλ}|= \mathcal{T}(\boldsymbolλ)\,q^{r-m}+\mathcal{O}(q^{r-m-{1}/{2}})$, where $\mathcal{T}(\boldsymbolλ)$ is the proportion of elements of the symmetric group of $r$ elements with cycle pattern $\boldsymbolλ$ and $m$ is the codimension of $\mathcal{A}$. We provide explicit upper bounds for the constants underlying the $\mathcal{O}$--notation in terms of $\boldsymbolλ$ and $\mathcal{A}$ with "good" behavior. We also apply these results to analyze the average--case complexity of the classical factorization algorithm restricted to $\mathcal{A}$, showing that it behaves as good as in the general case.
