Decompositions of complete multigraphs into stars of varying sizes
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 145 (2020) 32-64 • View Publication • BIB
In 1979 Tarsi showed that an edge decomposition of a complete multigraph into stars of size $m$ exists whenever some obvious necessary conditions hold. In 1992 Lonc gave necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an edge decomposition of a (simple) complete graph into stars of sizes $m_1,\ldots,m_t$. We show that the general problem of when a complete multigraph admits a decomposition into stars of sizes $m_1,\ldots,m_t$ is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete, but that it becomes tractable if we place a strong enough upper bound on $\max(m_1,\ldots,m_t)$. We determine the upper bound at which this transition occurs. Along the way we also give a characterisation of when an arbitrary multigraph can be decomposed into stars of sizes $m_1,\ldots,m_t$ with specified centres, and a generalisation of Landau's theorem on tournaments.

Theta and eta polynomials in geometry, Lie theory, and combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical Schur polynomials form a natural basis for the ring of symmetric polynomials, and have geometric significance since they represent the Schubert classes in the cohomology ring of Grassmannians. Moreover, these polynomials enjoy rich combinatorial properties. In the last decade, an exact analogue of this picture has emerged in the symplectic and orthogonal Lie types, with the Schur polynomials replaced by the theta and eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author. This expository paper gives an overview of what is known to date about this correspondence, with examples.

A cornucopia of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux are a subset of semistandard Young tableaux and refine standard Young tableaux. They are closely tied to the descent set of standard Young tableaux and were introduced by Assaf and Searles to tighten Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of Schur functions. The descent set and descent statistic of standard Young tableaux repeatedly prove themselves useful to consider, and as a result, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux make appearances in many ways outside of their original purpose. Some examples, which we present in this paper, include the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials, the decomposition of Foulkes characters, and the bigraded Frobenius image of the coinvariant algebra. While it would be nice to have a product formula enumeration of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux in the way that semistandard and standard Young tableaux do, it has previously been shown by the author that there is little hope on that front. The goal of this paper is to address a handful of the numerous alternative enumerative approaches. In particular, we present enumerations of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux using $q$-hit numbers, semistandard Young tableaux, weighted lattice paths, and symmetric polynomials, as well as the fundamental quasisymmetric and monomial quasisymmetric expansions of their Schur generating function.

Two Disjoint 5-Holes in Point Sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a set of points $S \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$, a subset $X \subseteq S$ with $|X|=k$ is called $k$-gon if all points of $X$ lie on the boundary of the convex hull of $X$, and $k$-hole if, in addition, no point of $S \setminus X$ lies in the convex hull of $X$. We use computer assistance to show that every set of 17 points in general position admits two disjoint 5-holes, that is, holes with disjoint respective convex hulls. This answers a question of Hosono and Urabe (2001). We also provide new bounds for three and more pairwise disjoint holes. In a recent article, Hosono and Urabe (2018) present new results on interior-disjoint holes -- a variant, which also has been investigated in the last two decades. Using our program, we show that every set of 15 points contains two interior-disjoint 5-holes. Moreover, our program can be used to verify that every set of 17 points contains a 6-gon within significantly smaller computation time than the original program by Szekeres and Peters (2006). Another independent verification of this result was done by Marić (2019).

Schur Ring, Run Structure and Periodic Compatible Binary Sequences
In this paper three Schur ring are discussed, namenly: Hamming, circulant orbists and decimated circulant orbits Schur ring. By using autocorrelation function and the run structure of binary sequences we proof the relation between this Schur ring and combinatorial structures such as Hadamard matrices, periodic compatible binary sequences and perfect binary sequences. Cai proved for binary sequences that the autocorrelation function is in fact completely determined by its run structure. Also, he characterised the structure of the circulant Hadamard matrices. We characterise a more general structure, called periodic compatible binary sequences ($PComS$ for brevety), which generalises Hadamard matrices, periodic complementary binary sequences and binary sequences with $2$-level autocorrelation. Families of periodic compatibles binary sequences are presented. Also, we compute a bounds on familias $PComS$ in Hamming Schur ring. The results obtained are applied to families of $PComS$ such as circulant, with one and two circulant cores, Goethals-Seidel type and partial Hadamard matrices and perfect binary sequences.

Partial Geometric Designs from Group Actions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, using group actions, we introduce a new method for constructing partial geometric designs (sometimes referred to as $1\frac{1}{2}$-designs). Using this new method, we construct several infinite families of partial geometric designs by investigating the actions of various linear groups of degree two on certain subsets of $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{2}$. Moreover, by computing the stabilizers of such subsets in various linear groups of degree two, we are also able to construct a new infinite family of balanced incomplete block designs.

Almost Designs and Their Links with Balanced Incomplete Block Designs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Almost designs ($t$-adesigns) were proposed and discussed by Ding as a certain generalization of combinatorial designs related to almost difference sets. Unlike $t$-designs, it is not clear whether $t$-adesigns need also be $(t-1)$-designs or $(t-1)$-adesigns. In this paper we discuss a particular class of 3-adesigns, i.e., 3-adesigns coming from certain strongly regular graphs and tournaments, and find that these are also $2$-designs. We construct several classes of these, and discuss some of the restrictions on the parameters of such a class. We also construct several new classes of 2-adesigns, and discuss some of their properties as well.

Young-Capelli bitableaux, Capelli immanants in U(gl(n)) and the Okounkov quantum immanants
Published • View Publication • BIB
We propose a new approach to a unified study of determinants, permanents, immanants, (determinantal) bitableaux and symmetrized bitableaux in the polynomial algebra $C[M_{n, n}]$ as well as of their Lie analogues in the enveloping algebra $U(gl(n))$. This leads to new relevant classes of elements in $U(gl(n))$: Capelli bitableaux, right Young-Capelli bitableaux and Capelli immanants. The set of standard Capelli bitableaux and the set of standard right Young-Capelli bitableaux are bases of $U(gl(n))$, whose action on the Gordan-Capelli basis of $C[M_{n, n}]$ have remarkable properties. Capelli immanants can be efficiently computed and provide a system of generators of $U(gl(n))$. The Okounkov quantum immanants are proved to be simple linear combinations of Capelli immanants. Several examples are provided throughout the paper.

A note on Ramsey numbers for Berge-G hyper graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph G=(V,E), a hypergraph H is called Berge-G if there is a bijection f from E(G) to E(H) such that for each e in E(G), e is a subset of f(e). The set of all Berge-G hypergraphs is denoted B(G). For integers k>1, r>1, and a graph G, let the Ramsey number R_r(B(G), k) be the smallest integer n such that no matter how the edges of a complete r-uniform n-vertex hypergraph are colored with k colors, there is a copy of a monochromatic Berge-G subhypergraph. Furthermore, let R(B(G),k) be the smallest integer n such that no matter how all subsets an n-element set are colored with k colors, there is a monochromatic copy of a Berge-G hypergraph. We give an upper bound for R_r(B(G),k) in terms of graph Ramsey numbers. In particular, we prove that when G becomes acyclic after removing some vertex, R_r(B(G),k)\le 4k|V(G)|+r-2, in contrast with classical multicolor Ramsey numbers. When G is a triangle or a K_4, we find sharper bounds and some exact results and determine some `small' Ramsey numbers: k/2 - o(k) < R_3(B(K_3)), k) < 3k/4+ o(k), For any odd integer t\neq 3, R(B(K_3),2^t-1)=t+2, 2^{ck} < R_3(B(K_4),k) < e(1+o(1))(k-1)k!, R_3(B(K_3),2)=R_3(B(K_3),3)=5, R_3(B(K_3),4)=6, R_3(B(K_3),5)=7, R_3(B(K_3),6)=8, R_3(B(K_3,8)=9, R_3(B(K_4),2)=6.

A discrete Hopf-Rinow-theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a version of the Hopf-Rinow-theorem with respect to path metrics on discrete spaces. The novel aspect is that we do not a priori assume local finiteness but isolate a local finiteness type condition, called essential local finiteness, that is indeed necessary. As a side product we identify the maximal weight, called the geodesic weight, which generates the path metric in the situation when the space is complete with respect to any of the equivalent notions of completeness proven in the Hopf-Rinow theorem. As an application, we characterize the graphs for which the resistance metric is a path metric induced by the graph structure.

On compactifications and product-free sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
A subset of a group is said to be product-free if it does not contain three elements satisfying the equation $xy=z$. We give a negative answer to a question of Babai and Sós on the existence of large product-free sets by model theoretic means. This question was originally answered by Gowers. Furthermore, we give a natural and sufficient model theoretic condition for a group to have a large product-free subset, as well as a model theoretic account of a result of Nikolov and Pyber on triple products.

Hypergraphs with few Berge paths of fixed length between vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the maximum number of hyperedges which may be in an $r$-uniform hypergraph under the restriction that no pair of vertices has more than $t$ Berge paths of length $k$ between them. When $r=t=2$, this is the even-cycle problem asking for $\mathrm{ex}(n, C_{2k})$. We extend results of Füredi and Simonovits and of Conlon, who studied the problem when $r=2$. In particular, we show that for fixed $k$ and $r$, there is a constant $t$ such that the maximum number of edges can be determined in order of magnitude.

A note on the Grinberg condition in the cycle spaces
Finding a Hamilton graph from simple connected graphs is an important problem in discrete mathematics and computer science. Grinberg Theorem is a well-known necessary condition for planar Hamilton graphs. It divides a plane into two parts: inside and outside faces. The sum of inside faces in a Hamilton graph is a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, using a basis of the cycle space to represent a graph and by the Inclusion-Exclusion Principle, we derive the equality with respect to the inside faces that can be also obtained from Grinberg Theorem. By further investigating the cycle structure of inside faces, we give a new combinatorial interpretation to Grinberg's condition, which explains why Grinberg Theorem is not sufficient for Hamilton graphs. Our results will improve deriving an efficient condition for Hamilton graphs.

A degree sequence Komlós theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
An important result of Komlós [Tiling Turán theorems, Combinatorica, 2000] yields the asymptotically exact minimum degree threshold that ensures a graph $G$ contains an $H$-tiling covering an $x$th proportion of the vertices of $G$ (for any fixed $x \in (0,1)$ and graph $H$). We give a degree sequence strengthening of this result which allows for a large proportion of the vertices in the host graph $G$ to have degree substantially smaller than that required by Komlós' theorem. We also demonstrate that for certain graphs $H$, the degree sequence condition is essentially best possible in more than one sense.
Combinatorics of Fourier transforms for type A quiver representations
We describe two new combinatorial algorithms (using the language of "triangular arrays") for computing the Fourier transforms of simple perverse sheaves on the moduli space of representations of an equioriented quiver of type A. (A rather different solution to this problem was previously obtained by Knight-Zelevinsky.) Along the way, we also show that the closure partial order and the dimensions of orbits have especially concise descriptions in the language of triangular arrays.

Polyominoes with maximally many holes
What is the maximum number of holes that a polyomino with $n$ tiles can enclose? Call this number $f(n)$. We show that if $n_k = \left( 2^{2k+1} + 3 \cdot 2^{k+1}+4 \right) / 3$ and $h_k = \left( 2^{2k}-1 \right) /3$, then $f(n_k) = h_k$ for $k \ge 1$. We also give nearly matching upper and lower bounds for large $n$, showing as a corollary that $f(n) \approx n/2$.

Moment Varieties of Measures on Polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The uniform probability measure on a convex polytope induces piecewise polynomial densities on its projections. For a fixed combinatorial type of simplicial polytopes, the moments of these measures are rational functions in the vertex coordinates. We study projective varieties that are parametrized by finite collections of such rational functions. Our focus lies on determining the prime ideals of these moment varieties. Special cases include Hankel determinantal ideals for polytopal splines on line segments, and the relations among multisymmetric functions given by the cumulants of a simplex. In general, our moment varieties are more complicated than in these two special cases. They offer challenges for both numerical and symbolic computing in algebraic geometry.

Eigenvalue-free interval for threshold graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper deals with the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrices of threshold graphs for which $-1$ and $0$ are considered as trivial eigenvalues. We show that threshold graphs have no non-trivial eigenvalues in the interval $\left[(-1-\sqrt{2})/2,\,(-1+\sqrt{2})/2\right]$. This confirms a conjecture by Aguilar, Lee, Piato, and Schweitzer (2018).

A combinatorial formula for certain binomial coefficients for Jack polynomials
We present a decomposition of the generalized binomial coefficients associated with Jack polynomials into two factors: a stem, which is described explicitly in terms of hooks of the indexing partitions, and a leaf, which inherits various recurrence properties from the binomial coefficients and depends exclusively on the skew diagram. We then derive a direct combinatorial formula for the leaf in the special case where the two indexing partitions differ by at most two rows. This formula also exhibits an unexpected symmetry with respect to the lengths of the two rows.
Throttling positive semidefinite zero forcing propagation time on graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Zero forcing is a process on a graph that colors vertices blue by starting with some of the vertices blue and applying a color change rule. Throttling minimizes the sum of the size of the initial blue vertex set and the number of the time steps needed to color the graph. We study throttling for positive semidefinite zero forcing. We establish a tight lower bound on the positive semidefinite throttling number as a function of the order, maximum degree, and positive semidefinite zero forcing number of the graph, and determine the positive semidefinite throttling numbers of paths, cycles, and full binary trees. We characterize the graphs that have extreme positive semidefinite throttling numbers.
