Realisation of groups as automorphism groups in categories
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that in various categories, including many consisting of maps or hypermaps, oriented or unoriented, of a given hyperbolic type, every countable group $A$ is isomorphic to the automorphism group of uncountably many non-isomorphic objects, infinitely many of them finite if $A$ is finite. In particular, this applies to dessins d'enfants, regarded as finite oriented hypermaps. The proof, involving maximal subgroups of various triangle groups, yields a simple construction of a regular map whose automorphism group contains an isomorphic copy of every finite group.

Stringy $E$-functions of canonical toric Fano threefolds and their applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Δ$ be a $3$-dimensional lattice polytope containing exactly one interior lattice point. We give a simple combinatorial formula for computing the stringy $E$-function of the $3$-dimensional canonical toric Fano variety $X_Δ$ associated with the polytope $Δ$. Using the stringy Libgober-Wood identity and our formula, we generalize the well-known combinatorial identity $\sum_{θ\preceq Δ\atop \dim (θ) =1} v(θ) \cdot v(θ^*) = 24$ holding in the case of $3$-dimensional reflexive polytopes $Δ$.
Edge metric dimension of some generalized Petersen graphs
Published in J. Results Math (2019) 74: 182 • View Publication • BIB
The edge metric dimension problem was recently introduced, which initiated the study of its mathematical properties. The theoretical properties of the edge metric representations and the edge metric dimension of generalized Petersen graphs $GP(n,k)$ are studied in this paper. We prove the exact formulae for $GP(n,1)$ and $GP(n, 2)$, while for the other values of $k$ the lower bound is stated.

Lattice Path Matroids are 3-Colorable
We show that every lattice path matroid of rank at least two has a quite simple coline, also known as a positive coline. Therefore every orientation of a lattice path matroid is 3-colorable with respect to the chromatic number of oriented matroids introduced by J. Nešetřil, R. Nickel, and W. Hochstättler.

Duality Respecting Representations and Compatible Complexity Measures for Gammoids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that every gammoid has special digraph representations, such that a representation of the dual of the gammoid may be easily obtained by reversing all arcs. In an informal sense, the duality notion of a poset applied to the digraph of a special representation of a gammoid commutes with the operation of forming the dual of that gammoid. We use these special representations in order to define a complexity measure for gammoids, such that the classes of gammoids with bounded complexity are closed under duality, minors, and direct sums.

Well-Scaling Procedure for Deciding Gammoid Class-Membership of Matroids
We introduce a procedure that solves the decision problem whether a given matroid M is a gammoid. The procedure consists of three pieces: First, we introduce a notion of a valid matroid tableau which captures the current state of knowledge regarding the properties of matroids related to the matroid under consideration. Second, we give a sufficient set of rules that may be used to generate valid matroid tableaux. Third, we introduce a succession of steps that ultimately lead to a decisive tableau starting with any valid tableau. We argue that the decision problem scales well with respect to parallel computation models.

Heavy Arc Orientations of Gammoids
In this work, we introduce a purely combinatorial way to obtain realizable orientations of a gammoid from a total order on the arc set of the digraph representing it, without first obtaining a matrix representing the gammoid over the reals.
Some upper bounds on ordinal-valued Ramsey numbers for colourings of pairs
We study Ramsey's theorem for pairs and two colours in the context of the theory of $α$-large sets introduced by Ketonen and Solovay. We prove that any $2$-colouring of pairs from an $ω^{300n}$-large set admits an $ω^n$-large homogeneous set. We explain how a formalized version of this bound gives a more direct proof, and a strengthening, of the recent result of Patey and Yokoyama [Adv. Math. 330 (2018), 1034--1070] stating that Ramsey's theorem for pairs and two colours is $\forallΣ^0_2$-conservative over the axiomatic theory $\mathsf{RCA}_0$ (recursive comprehension).

An isoperimetric inequality for Hamming balls and local expansion in hypercubes
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, volume 29, issue 1, #P1.15, January 2022 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a vertex isoperimetric inequality for the $n$-dimensional Hamming ball $\mathcal{B}_n(R)$ of radius $R$. The isoperimetric inequality is sharp up to a constant factor for sets that are comparable to $\mathcal{B}_n(R)$ in size. A key step in the proof is a local expansion phenomenon in hypercubes.

More on Equienergetic Threshold Graphs
The energy of a graph is defined as the sum the absolute values of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. A threshold graph G on n vertices is coded by a binary sequence of length n. In this paper we answer a question posed by Jacobs et al. [Eigenvalues and energy in threshold graphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 465 (2015) 412-425], by giving an infinite sequences of threshold graphs having the same energy but differ to the complete graph's energy.

Finite big Ramsey degrees in universal structures
Big Ramsey degrees of finite structures are usually considered with respect to a Fraï ssé limit. Building mainly on the work of Devlin, Sauer, Laflamme and Van Thé, in this paper we consider structures which are not Fraï ssé limits, and still have the property that their finite substructures have finite big Ramsey degrees in them. For example, the class of all finite acyclic oriented graphs is not a Fraï ssé class, and yet we show that there is a countably infinite acyclic oriented graph in which every finite acyclic oriented graph has finite big Ramsey degree. Our main tools come from category theory as it has recently become evident that the Ramsey property is not only a deep combinatorial property, but also a genuine categorical property.

Rule Algebras for Adhesive Categories
Published in Logical Methods in Computer Science, Volume 16, Issue 3 (July 3, 2020) lmcs:5164 • View Publication • BIB
We demonstrate that the most well-known approach to rewriting graphical structures, the Double-Pushout (DPO) approach, possesses a notion of sequential compositions of rules along an overlap that is associative in a natural sense. Notably, our results hold in the general setting of $\mathcal{M}$-adhesive categories. This observation complements the classical Concurrency Theorem of DPO rewriting. We then proceed to define rule algebras in both settings, where the most general categories permissible are the finitary (or finitary restrictions of) $\mathcal{M}$-adhesive categories with $\mathcal{M}$-effective unions. If in addition a given such category possess an $\mathcal{M}$-initial object, the resulting rule algebra is unital (in addition to being associative). We demonstrate that in this setting a canonical representation of the rule algebras is obtainable, which opens the possibility of applying the concept to define and compute the evolution of statistical moments of observables in stochastic DPO rewriting systems.

Hypergraph Lagrangians I: the Frankl-Füredi conjecture is false
Published • View Publication • BIB
An old and well-known conjecture of Frankl and Füredi states that the Lagrangian of an $r$-uniform hypergraph with $m$ edges is maximised by an initial segment of colex. In this paper we disprove this conjecture by finding an infinite family of counterexamples for all $r \ge 4$. We also show that, for sufficiently large $t \in \mathbb{N}$, the conjecture is true in the range $\binom{t}{r} \le m \le \binom{t+1}{r} - \binom{t-1}{r-2}$.
Effective divisor classes on metric graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of semibreak divisors on metric graphs (tropical curves) and prove that every effective divisor class (of degree at most the genus) has a semibreak divisor representative. This appropriately generalizes the notion of break divisors (in degree equal to genus). Our method of proof is new, even for the special case of break divisors. We provide an algorithm to efficiently compute such semibreak representatives. Semibreak divisors provide the tool to establish some basic properties of effective loci inside Picard groups of metric graphs. We prove that effective loci are pure-dimensional polyhedral sets. We also prove that a `generic' divisor class (in degree at most the genus) has rank zero, and that the Abel-Jacobi map is `birational' onto its image. These are analogues of classical results for Riemann surfaces.

Log-Concave Polynomials I: Entropy and a Deterministic Approximation Algorithm for Counting Bases of Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a deterministic polynomial time $2^{O(r)}$-approximation algorithm for the number of bases of a given matroid of rank $r$ and the number of common bases of any two matroids of rank $r$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first nontrivial deterministic approximation algorithm that works for arbitrary matroids. Based on a lower bound of Azar, Broder, and Frieze [ABF94] this is almost the best possible result assuming oracle access to independent sets of the matroid. There are two main ingredients in our result: For the first, we build upon recent results of Adiprasito, Huh, and Katz [AHK15] and Huh and Wang [HW17] on combinatorial hodge theory to derive a connection between matroids and log-concave polynomials. We expect that several new applications in approximation algorithms will be derived from this connection in future. Formally, we prove that the multivariate generating polynomial of the bases of any matroid is log-concave as a function over the positive orthant. For the second ingredient, we develop a general framework for approximate counting in discrete problems, based on convex optimization. The connection goes through subadditivity of the entropy. For matroids, we prove that an approximate superadditivity of the entropy holds by relying on the log-concavity of the corresponding polynomials.

Explicit factorization of $x^{2^nd}-1$ over a finite field
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of odd characteristic containing $q$ elements and integer $n\ge 1$. In this paper, the explicit factorization of $x^{2^nd}-1$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is obtained when $d$ is an odd divisor of $q+1$.
$N^{3/4}$ law in the cubic lattice
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the Edge-Isoperimetric Problem (EIP) for sets with $n$ elements of the cubic lattice by emphasizing its relation with the emergence of the Wulff shape in the crystallization problem. Minimizers $M_n$ of the edge perimeter are shown to deviate from a corresponding cubic Wulff configuration with respect to their symmetric difference by at most $ {\rm O}(n^{3/4})$ elements. The exponent $3/4$ is optimal. This extends to the cubic lattice analogous results that have already been established for the triangular, the hexagonal, and the square lattice in two space dimensions.
A complete characterization of plateaued Boolean functions in terms of their Cayley graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we find a complete characterization of plateaued Boolean functions in terms of the associated Cayley graphs. Precisely, we show that a Boolean function $f$ is $s$-plateaued (of weight $=2^{(n+s-2)/2}$) if and only if the associated Cayley graph is a complete bipartite graph between the support of $f$ and its complement (hence the graph is strongly regular of parameters $e=0,d=2^{(n+s-2)/2}$). Moreover, a Boolean function $f$ is $s$-plateaued (of weight $\neq 2^{(n+s-2)/2}$) if and only if the associated Cayley graph is strongly $3$-walk-regular (and also strongly $\ell$-walk-regular, for all odd $\ell\geq 3$) with some explicitly given parameters.

$h^*$-Polynomials With Roots on the Unit Circle
Published • View Publication • BIB
For an $n$-dimensional lattice simplex $Δ_{(1,\mathbf{q})}$ with vertices given by the standard basis vectors and $-\mathbf{q}$ where $\mathbf{q}$ has positive entries, we investigate when the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomial for $Δ_{(1,\mathbf{q})}$ factors as a product of geometric series in powers of $z$. Our motivation is a theorem of Rodriguez-Villegas implying that when the $h^*$-polynomial of a lattice polytope $P$ has all roots on the unit circle, then the Ehrhart polynomial of $P$ has positive coefficients. We focus on those $Δ_{(1,\mathbf{q})}$ for which $\mathbf{q}$ has only two or three distinct entries, providing both theoretical results and conjectures/questions motivated by experimental evidence.
