Positivity of iterated sequences of polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we present some criteria for the $2$-$q$-log-convexity and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of combinatorial sequences, which can be regarded as the first column of certain infinite triangular array $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n,k\geq0}$ of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative coefficients satisfying the recurrence relation $$A_{n,k}(q)=A_{n-1,k-1}(q)+g_k(q)A_{n-1,k}(q)+h_{k+1}(q)A_{n-1,k+1}(q).$$ Those criterions can also be presented by continued fractions and generating functions. These allow a unified treatment of the $2$-$q$-log-convexity of alternating Eulerian polynomials, $2$-log-convexity of Euler numbers, and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of many classical polynomials, including the Bell polynomials, the Eulerian polynomials of Types $A$ and $B$, the $q$-Schröder numbers, $q$-central Delannoy numbers, the Narayana polynomials of Types $A$ and $B$, the generating functions of rows in the Catalan triangles of Aigner and Shapiro, the generating functions of rows in the large Schröder triangle, and so on, which extend many known results for $q$-log-convexity.

How long can optimal locally repairable codes be?
Published • View Publication • BIB
A locally repairable code (LRC) with locality $r$ allows for the recovery of any erased codeword symbol using only $r$ other codeword symbols. A Singleton-type bound dictates the best possible trade-off between the dimension and distance of LRCs --- an LRC attaining this trade-off is deemed \emph{optimal}. Such optimal LRCs have been constructed over alphabets growing linearly in the block length. Unlike the classical Singleton bound, however, it was not known if such a linear growth in the alphabet size is necessary, or for that matter even if the alphabet needs to grow at all with the block length. Indeed, for small code distances $3,4$, arbitrarily long optimal LRCs were known over fixed alphabets. Here, we prove that for distances $d \ge 5$, the code length $n$ of an optimal LRC over an alphabet of size $q$ must be at most roughly $O(d q^3)$. For the case $d=5$, our upper bound is $O(q^2)$. We complement these bounds by showing the existence of optimal LRCs of length $Ω_{d,r}(q^{1+1/\lfloor(d-3)/2\rfloor})$ when $d \le r+2$. These bounds match when $d=5$, thus pinning down $n=Θ(q^2)$ as the asymptotically largest length of an optimal LRC for this case.

Schur reduction of trees and extremal entries of the Fiedler vector
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the eigenvectors of Laplacian matrices of trees. The Laplacian matrix is reduced to a tridiagonal matrix using the Schur complement. This preserves the eigenvectors and allows us to provide fomulas for the ratio of eigenvector entries. We also obtain bounds on the ratio of eigenvector entries along a path in terms of the eigenvalue and Perron values. The results are then applied to the Fiedler vector. Here we locate the extremal entries of the Fiedler vector and study classes of graphs such that the extremal entries can be found at the end points of the longest path.

On symmetries of edge and vertex colourings of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $c$ and $c'$ be edge or vertex colourings of a graph $G$. We say that $c'$ is less symmetric than $c$ if the stabiliser (in $\operatorname{Aut} G$) of $c'$ is contained in the stabiliser of $c$. We show that if $G$ is not a bicentred tree, then for every vertex colouring of $G$ there is a less symmetric edge colouring with the same number of colours. On the other hand, if $T$ is a tree, then for every edge colouring there is a less symmetric vertex colouring with the same number of edges. Our results can be used to characterise those graphs whose distinguishing index is larger than their distinguishing number.

A short derivation of the structure theorem for graphs with excluded topological minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
As a major step in their proof of Wagner's conjecture, Robertson and Seymour showed that every graph not containing a fixed graph $H$ as a minor has a tree-decomposition in which each torso is almost embeddable in a surface of bounded genus. Recently, Grohe and Marx proved a similar result for graphs not containing $H$ as a topological minor. They showed that every graph which does not contain $H$ as a topological minor has a tree-decomposition in which every torso is either almost embeddable in a surface of bounded genus, or has a bounded number of vertices of high degree. We give a short proof of the theorem of Grohe and Marx, improving their bounds on a number of the parameters involved.
Elusive extremal graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the uniqueness of optimal solutions to extremal graph theory problems. Lovasz conjectured that every finite feasible set of subgraph density constraints can be extended further by a finite set of density constraints so that the resulting set is satisfied by an asymptotically unique graph. This statement is often referred to as saying that `every extremal graph theory problem has a finitely forcible optimum'. We present a counterexample to the conjecture. Our techniques also extend to a more general setting involving other types of constraints.

The matching polynomials and spectral radii of uniform supertrees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study matching polynomials of uniform hypergraph and spectral radii of uniform supertrees. By comparing the matching polynomials of supertrees, we extend Li and Feng's results on grafting operations on graphs to supertrees. Using the methods of grafting operations on supertrees and comparing matching polynomials of supertrees, we determine the first $\lfloor\frac{d}{2}\rfloor+1$ largest spectral radii of $r$-uniform supertrees with size $m$ and diameter $d$. In addition, the first two smallest spectral radii of supertrees with size $m$ are determined.
Further Results On k-Super Graceful Graphs
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple, finite and undirected graph of order $p$ and size $q$. For $k\ge 1$, a bijection $f: V(G)\cup E(G) \to \{k, k+1, k+2, \ldots, k+p+q-1\}$ such that $f(uv)= |f(u) - f(v)|$ for every edge $uv\in E(G)$ is said to be a $k$-super graceful labeling of $G$. We say $G$ is $k$-super graceful if it admits a $k$-super graceful labeling. In this paper, we study the $k$-super gracefulness of some graphs in which each component is either regular or bi-regular.

On $k$-Super Graceful Labeling of Graphs
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple, finite and undirected graph of order $p$ and size $q$. For $k\ge 1$, a bijection $f: V(G)\cup E(G) \to \{k, k+1, k+2, \ldots, k+p+q-1\}$ such that $f(uv)= |f(u) - f(v)|$ for every edge $uv\in E(G)$ is said to be a $k$-super graceful labeling of $G$. We say $G$ is $k$-super graceful if it admits a $k$-super graceful labeling. In this paper, we study the $k$-super gracefulness of some standard graphs. Some general properties are obtained. Particularly, we found many sufficient conditions on $k$-super gracefulness for many families of (complete) bipartite and tripartite graphs. We show that some of the conditions are also necessary.

A New Approach to the Hofstadter $Q$-Recurrence
Nested recurrence relations are highly sensitive to their initial conditions. The best-known nested recurrence, the Hofstadter $Q$-recurrence, generates sequences displaying a wide variety of behaviors. Most famous among these is the Hofstadter $Q$-sequence, which appears to be structured at a macro level and chaotic at a micro level. Other choices of initial conditions can lead to more predictable solutions, frequently interleavings of simple sequences. Previous work has focused on the form of a desired solution and on describing an initial condition that generates such a solution. In this paper, we flip this paradigm around. We illustrate how focusing on the form of an initial condition and describing the resulting sequences can yield strange families of new solutions to nested recurrences.

Delta-matroids as subsystems of sequences of Higgs lifts
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 2021 • View Publication • BIB
In her paper "Generalized matroids and supermodular colourings", Tardos studied special delta-matroids obtained from sequences of Higgs lifts; these are the full Higgs lift delta-matroids that we treat and around which all of our results revolve. We give an excluded-minor characterization of the class of full Higgs lift delta-matroids within the class of all delta-matroids, and we give similar characterizations of two other minor-closed classes of delta-matroids that we define using Higgs lifts. We introduce a minor-closed, dual-closed class of Higgs lift delta-matroids that arise from lattice paths. It follows from results of Bouchet that all delta-matroids can be obtained from full Higgs lift delta-matroids by removing certain feasible sets; to address which feasible sets can be removed, we give an excluded-minor characterization of delta-matroids within the more general structure of set systems. Many of these excluded minors occur again when we characterize the delta-matroids in which the collection of feasible sets is the union of the collections of bases of matroids of different ranks, and yet again when we require those matroids to have special properties, such as being paving.

The excluded 3-minors for vf-safe delta-matroids
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 2021 • View Publication • BIB
Vf-safe delta-matroids have the desirable property of behaving well under certain duality operations. Several important classes of delta-matroids are known to be vf-safe, including the class of ribbon-graphic delta-matroids, which is related to the class of ribbon graphs or embedded graphs in the same way that graphic matroids correspond to graphs. In this paper, we characterize vf-safe delta-matroids and ribbon-graphic delta-matroids by finding the minimal obstructions, called excluded 3-minors, to membership in the class. We find the unique (up to twisted duality) excluded $3$-minor within the class of set systems for the class of vf-safe delta-matroids. In the literature, binary delta-matroids appear in many different guises, with appropriate notions of minor operations equivalent to that of $3$-minors, perhaps most notably as graphs with vertex minors. We give a direct explanation of this equivalence and show that some well-known results may be expressed in terms of $3$-minors.

A Counter Example to the Shuffle Compatiblity Conjecture
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 29, Issue 3 (2022) P3.51 • View Publication • BIB
The shuffle product has a connection with several useful permutation statistics such as descent and peak, and corresponds to the multiplication operation in the corresponding descent and peak algebras. In their recent work, Gessel and Zhuang formalized the notion of shuffle-compatibility and studied various permutation statistics from this viewpoint. They further conjectured that any shuffle compatible permutation statistic is a descent statistic. In this note we construct a counter-example to this conjecture.

Exact solution to an extremal problem on graphic sequences with a realization containing every $2$-tree on $k$ vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
A simple graph $G$ is an {\it 2-tree} if $G=K_3$, or $G$ has a vertex $v$ of degree 2, whose neighbors are adjacent, and $G-v$ is an 2-tree. Clearly, if $G$ is an 2-tree on $n$ vertices, then $|E(G)|=2n-3$. A non-increasing sequence $π=(d_1,\ldots,d_n)$ of nonnegative integers is a {\it graphic sequence} if it is realizable by a simple graph $G$ on $n$ vertices. Yin and Li (Acta Mathematica Sinica, English Series, 25(2009)795--802) proved that if $k\ge 2$, $n\ge \frac{9}{2}k^2+\frac{19}{2}k$ and $π=(d_1,\ldots,d_n)$ is a graphic sequence with $\sum\limits_{i=1}^n d_i>(k-2)n$, then $π$ has a realization containing every 1-tree (the usual tree) on $k$ vertices. Moreover, the lower bound $(k-2)n$ is the best possible. This is a variation of a conjecture due to Erdős and Sós. In this paper, we investigate an analogue problem for $2$-trees and prove that if $k\ge 3$ is an integer with $k\equiv i(\mbox{mod }3)$, $n\geq20\lfloor\frac{k}{3}\rfloor^2+31\lfloor\frac{k}{3}\rfloor+12$ and $π=(d_1,\ldots,d_n)$ is a graphic sequence with $\sum\limits_{i=1}^n d_i>\max\{(k-1)(n-1),2\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor n-2n-\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor^2+\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor+1-(-1)^i\}$, then $π$ has a realization containing every 2-tree on $k$ vertices. Moreover, the lower bound $\max\{(k-1)(n-1),2\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor n-2n-\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor^2+\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor+1-(-1)^i\}$ is the best possible. This result implies a conjecture due to Zeng and Yin (Discrete Math. Theor. Comput. Sci., 17(3)(2016), 315--326).

On the vertex cover number of 3 uniform hypergraph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a hypergraph H(V;E), a set of vertices S in V is a vertex cover if every edge has at least a vertex in S. The vertex cover number is the minimum cardinality of a vertex cover, denoted by t(H). In this paper, we prove that for every 3 uniform connected hypergraph H(V;E), t(H)<=(2m+1)/3 holds on where m is the number of edges. Furthermore, the equality holds on if and only if H(V;E) is a hypertree with perfect matching.

The perfect matching association scheme
Published • View Publication • BIB
We revisit the Bose-Mesner algebra of the perfect matching association scheme. Our main results are: 1. An inductive algorithm, based on solving linear equations, to compute the eigenvalues of the orbital basis elements given the central characters of the symmetric groups. 2. Universal formulas, as content evaluations of symmetric functions, for the eigenvalues of fixed orbitals. 3. An inductive construction of an eigenvector (the so called first Gelfand-Tsetlin vector) in each eigenspace leading to a different inductive algorithm (not using central characters) for the eigenvalues of the orbital basis elements.

Analogue of DP-coloring on variable degeneracy and its applications on list vertex-arboricity and DP-coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
In \cite{listnoC3adjC4}), Borodin and Ivanova proved that every planar graph without $4$-cycles adjacent to $3$-cycle is list vertex-$2$-aborable. In fact, they proved a more general result. Inspired by these results and DP-coloring which becomes a widely studied topic, we introduce a generalization on variable degeneracy including list vertex arboricity. We use this notion to extend a general result by Borodin and Ivanova. Not only that this theorem implies results about planar graphs without $4$-cycles adjacent to $3$-cycle by Borodin and Ivanova, it implies many other results including a result by Kim and Yu \cite{KimY} that every planar graph without $4$-cycles adjacent to $3$-cycle is DP-$4$-colorable.

Orientations and bijections for toroidal maps with prescribed face-degrees and essential girth
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present unified bijections for maps on the torus with control on the face-degrees and essential girth (girth of the periodic planar representation). A first step is to show that for d>=3 every toroidal d-angulation of essential girth d can be endowed with a certain "canonical" orientation (formulated as a weight-assignment on the half-edges). Using an adaptation of a construction by Bernardi and Chapuy, we can then derive a bijection between face-rooted toroidal d-angulations of essential girth d (with the condition that, apart from the root-face contour, no other closed walk of length d encloses the root-face) and a family of decorated unicellular maps. The orientations and bijections can then be generalized, for any d>=1, to toroidal face-rooted maps of essential girth d with a root-face of degree d (and with the same root-face contour condition as for d-angulations), and they take a simpler form in the bipartite case, as a parity specialization. On the enumerative side we obtain explicit algebraic expressions for the generating functions of rooted essentially simple triangulations and bipartite quadrangulations on the torus. Our bijective constructions can be considered as toroidal counterparts of those obtained by Bernardi and the first author in the planar case, and they also build on ideas introduced by Despré, Gonçalves and the second author for essentially simple triangulations, of imposing a balancedness condition on the orientations in genus 1.
Eigenvectors of Laplacian or signless Laplacian of Hypergraphs Associated with Zero Eigenvalue
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, Volume 579, 2019, Pages 244-261 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a connected $m$-uniform hypergraph. In this paper we mainly consider the eigenvectors of the Laplacian or signless Laplacian tensor of $G$ associated with zero eigenvalue, called the first Laplacian or signless Laplacian eigenvectors of $G$. By means of the incidence matrix of $G$, the number of first Laplacian or signless Laplaican (H- or N-)eigenvectors can be get explicitly by solving the Smith normal form of the incidence matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_m$ or $\mathbb{Z}_2$. Consequently, we prove that the number of first Laplacian (H-)eigenvectors is equal to the number of first signless Laplacian (H-)eigenvectors when zero is an (H-)eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian tensor. We establish a connection between first Laplacian (signless Laplacian) H-eigenvectors and the even (odd) bipartitions of $G$.
