Finding a Path with Two Labels Forbidden in Group-Labeled Graphs

The parity of the length of paths and cycles is a classical and well-studied topic in graph theory and theoretical computer science. The parity constraints can be extended to label constraints in a group-labeled graph, which is a directed graph with each arc labeled by an element of a group. Recently, paths and cycles in group-labeled graphs have been investigated, such as packing non-zero paths and cycles, where "non-zero" means that the identity element is a unique forbidden label.
In this paper, we present a solution to finding an $s$--$t$ path with two labels forbidden in a group-labeled graph. This also leads to an elementary solution to finding a zero $s$--$t$ path in a ${\mathbb Z}_3$-labeled graph, which is the first nontrivial case of finding a zero path. This situation in fact generalizes the 2-disjoint paths problem in undirected graphs, which also motivates us to consider that setting. More precisely, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm for testing whether there are at most two possible labels of $s$--$t$ paths in a group-labeled graph or not, and finding $s$--$t$ paths attaining at least three distinct labels if exist. The algorithm is based on a necessary and sufficient condition for a group-labeled graph to have exactly two possible labels of $s$--$t$ paths, which is the main technical contribution of this paper.

An $m$-$cover$ of lines of a finite projective space ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ (of a finite polar space $\cal P$) is a set of lines $\cal L$ of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ (of $\cal P$) such that every point of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ (of $\cal P$) contains $m$ lines of $\cal L$, for some $m$. Embed ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ in ${\rm PG}(r,q^2)$. Let $\bar{\cal L}$ denote the set of points of ${\rm PG}(r,q^2)$ lying on the extended lines of $\cal L$.
An $m$-cover $\cal L$ of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ is an $(r-2)$-dual $m$-cover if there are two possibilities for the number of lines of $\cal L$ contained in an $(r-2)$-space of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$. Basing on this notion, we characterize $m$-covers $\cal L$ of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ such that $\bar{\cal L}$ is a two-character set of ${\rm PG}(r,q^2)$. In particular, we show that if $\cal L$ is invariant under a Singer cyclic group of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ then it is an $(r-2)$-dual $m$-cover.
Assuming that the lines of $\cal L$ are lines of a symplectic polar space ${\cal W}(r,q)$ (of an orthogonal polar space ${\cal Q}(r,q)$ of parabolic type), similarly to the projective case we introduce the notion of an $(r-2)$-dual $m$-cover of symplectic type (of parabolic type). We prove that an $m$-cover $\cal L$ of ${\cal W}(r,q)$ (of ${\cal Q}(r,q)$) has this dual property if and only if $\bar{\cal L}$ is a tight set of an Hermitian variety ${\cal H}(r,q^2)$ or of ${\cal W}(r,q^2)$ (of ${\cal H}(r,q^2)$ or of ${\cal Q}(r,q^2)$). We also provide some interesting examples of $(4n-3)$-dual $m$-covers of symplectic type of ${\cal W}(4n-1,q)$.

We introduce the asymptotic spectrum of graphs and apply the theory of asymptotic spectra of Strassen (J. Reine Angew. Math. 1988) to obtain a new dual characterisation of the Shannon capacity of graphs. Elements in the asymptotic spectrum of graphs include the Lovász theta number, the fractional clique cover number, the complement of the fractional orthogonal rank and the fractional Haemers bounds.

We study Extremal Combinatorics problems where local properties are used to derive global properties. That is, we consider a given configuration where every small piece of the configuration satisfies some restriction, and use this local property to derive global properties of the entire configuration. We study one such Ramsey problem of Erdős and Shelah, where the configurations are complete graphs with colored edges and every small induced subgraph contains many distinct colors. Our bounds for this Ramsey problem show that the known probabilistic construction is tight in various cases. We study one Discrete Geometry variant, also by Erdős, where we have a set of points in the plane such that every small subset spans many distinct distances. Finally, we consider an Additive Combinatorics problem, where we are given sets of real numbers such that every small subset has a large difference set.
We derive new bounds for all of the above problems. Our proof technique is based on introducing an non-algebraic variant of additive energies. This abstract energy variant is based on edge colors in graphs.

We study the back stable Schubert calculus of the infinite flag variety. Our main results are: 1) a formula for back stable (double) Schubert classes expressing them in terms of a symmetric function part and a finite part; 2) a novel definition of double and triple Stanley symmetric functions; 3) a proof of the positivity of double Edelman-Greene coefficients generalizing the results of Edelman-Greene and Lascoux-Schutzenberger; 4) the definition of a new class of bumpless pipedreams, giving new formulae for double Schubert polynomials, back stable double Schubert polynomials, and a new form of the Edelman-Greene insertion algorithm; 5) the construction of the Peterson subalgebra of the infinite nilHecke algebra, extending work of Peterson in the affine case; 6) equivariant Pieri rules for the homology of the infinite Grassmannian; 7) homology divided difference operators that create the equivariant homology Schubert classes of the infinite Grassmannian.
Rock, Paper, Scissors, Etc -- Topics in the Theory of Regular Tournaments
The classic Rock-Paper-Scissors game of size 3 and its extension, Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock, are modeled by directed graphs called tournaments. They can be further extended to any odd size. The extended games are regular tournaments where each strategy beats and is beaten by exactly half of the alternatives. We survey the properties of regular tournaments, which we will call games. In the process we describe a number of constructions for such games. These include games on groups of odd order and the associated games on coset spaces. We obtain a new lower bound for the number of games of size 2n+1.

We present a new approach, based on graphon theory, to finding the limiting spectral distributions of general Wigner-type matrices. This approach determines the moments of the limiting measures and the equations of their Stieltjes transforms explicitly with weaker assumptions on the convergence of variance profiles than previous results. As applications, we give a new proof of the semicircle law for generalized Wigner matrices and determine the limiting spectral distributions for three sparse inhomogeneous random graph models with sparsity $ω(1/n)$: inhomogeneous random graphs with roughly equal expected degrees, $W$-random graphs and stochastic block models with a growing number of blocks. Furthermore, we show our theorems can be applied to random Gram matrices with a variance profile for which we can find the limiting spectral distributions under weaker assumptions than previous results.
On Hypergraph Lagrangians and Frankl-Füredi's Conjecture
Frankl and Füredi conjectured in 1989 that the maximum Lagrangian, denoted by $λ_r(m)$, among all $r$-uniform hypergraphs of fixed size $m$ is achieved by the minimum hypergraph $C_{r,m}$ under the colexicographic order. We say $m$ in {\em principal domain} if there exists an integer $t$ such that ${t-1\choose r}\leq m\leq {t\choose r}-{t-2\choose r-2}$. If $m$ is in the principal domain, then Frankl-Füredi's conjecture has a very simple expression: $$λ_r(m)=\frac{1}{(t-1)^r}{t-1\choose r}.$$ Many previous results are focusing on $r=3$. For $r\geq 4$, Tyomkyn in 2017 proved that Frankl-Füredi's conjecture holds whenever ${t-1\choose r} \leq m \leq {t\choose r} -{t-2\choose r-2}- δ_rt^{r-2}$ for a constant $δ_r>0$. In this paper, we improve Tyomkyn's result by showing Frankl-Füredi's conjecture holds whenever ${t-1\choose r} \leq m \leq {t\choose r} -{t-2\choose r-2}- δ_r't^{r-\frac{7}{3}}$ for a constant $δ_r'>0$.
A Simple Characterization of Proportionally 2-choosable Graphs

We recently introduced proportional choosability, a new list analogue of equitable coloring. Like equitable coloring, and unlike list equitable coloring (a.k.a. equitable choosability), proportional choosability bounds sizes of color classes both from above and from below. In this note, we show that a graph is proportionally 2-choosable if and only if it is a linear forest such that its largest component has at most 5 vertices and all of its other components have two or fewer vertices. We also construct examples that show that characterizing equitably 2-choosable graphs is still open.

We study the problem of approximating the Ising model partition function with complex parameters on bounded degree graphs. We establish a deterministic polynomial-time approximation scheme for the partition function when the interactions and external fields are absolutely bounded close to zero. Furthermore, we prove that for this class of Ising models the partition function does not vanish. Our algorithm is based on an approach due to Barvinok for approximating evaluations of a polynomial based on the location of the complex zeros and a technique due to Patel and Regts for efficiently computing the leading coefficients of graph polynomials on bounded degree graphs. Finally, we show how our algorithm can be extended to approximate certain output probability amplitudes of quantum circuits.

Whitney's theorem states that every 3-connected planar graph is uniquely embeddable on the sphere. On the other hand, it has many inequivalent embeddings on another surface. We shall characterize structures of a $3$-connected $3$-regular planar graph $G$ embedded on the projective-plane, the torus and the Klein bottle, and give a one-to-one correspondence between inequivalent embeddings of $G$ on each surface and some subgraphs of the dual of $G$ embedded on the sphere. These results enable us to give explicit bounds for the number of inequivalent embeddings of $G$ on each surface, and propose effective algorithms for enumerating and counting these embeddings.
Inhomogeneous Partition Regularity

We say that the system of equations $Ax=b$, where $A$ is an integer matrix and $b$ is a (non-zero) integer vector, is partition regular if whenever the integers are finitely coloured there is a monochromatic vector $x$ with $Ax=b$. Rado proved that the system $Ax=b$ is partition regular if and only if it has a constant solution. Byszewski and Krawczyk asked if this remains true when the integers are replaced by a general ring $R$. Our aim in this note is to answer this question in the affirmative. The main ingredient is a new `direct' proof of Rado's result.

A semi-regular tiling of the hyperbolic plane is a tessellation by regular geodesic polygons with the property that each vertex has the same vertex-type, which is a cyclic tuple of integers that determine the number of sides of the polygons surrounding the vertex. We determine combinatorial criteria for the existence, and uniqueness, of a semi-regular tiling with a given vertex-type, and pose some open questions.
Neighbor-Locating Colorings in Graphs

A $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a $k$-partition $Π=\{S_1,\ldots,S_k\}$ of $V(G)$ into independent sets, called \emph{colors}. A $k$-coloring is called \emph{neighbor-locating} if for every pair of vertices $u,v$ belonging to the same color $S_i$, the set of colors of the neighborhood of $u$ is different from the set of colors of the neighborhood of $v$. The neighbor-locating chromatic number $χ_{_{NL}}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a neighbor-locating coloring of $G$.
We establish some tight bounds for the neighbor-locating chromatic number of a graph, in terms of its order, maximum degree and independence number. We determine all connected graphs of order $n\geq 5$ with neighbor-locating chromatic number $n$ or $n-1$. We examine the neighbor-locating chromatic number for two graph operations: join and disjoint union, and also for two graph families: split graphs and Mycielski graphs.

Let $q$ be a prime power and $\mathbb F_q$ be the finite field of size $q$. In this paper we provide a Galois theoretical framework that allows to produce good polynomials for the Tamo and Barg construction of optimal locally recoverable codes (LRC). Using our approach we construct new good polynomials and then optimal LRCs with new parameters. The existing theory of good polynomials fits entirely in our new framework. The key advantage of our method is that we do not need to rely on arithmetic properties of the pair $(q,r)$, where $r$ is the locality of the code.

We develop an efficient algorithmic approach for approximate counting and sampling in the low-temperature regime of a broad class of statistical physics models on finite subsets of the lattice $\mathbb Z^d$ and on the torus $(\mathbb Z/n \mathbb Z)^d$. Our approach is based on combining contour representations from Pirogov-Sinai theory with Barvinok's approach to approximate counting using truncated Taylor series. Some consequences of our main results include an FPTAS for approximating the partition function of the hard-core model at sufficiently high fugacity on subsets of $\mathbb Z^d$ with appropriate boundary conditions and an efficient sampling algorithm for the ferromagnetic Potts model on the discrete torus $(\mathbb Z/n \mathbb Z)^d$ at sufficiently low temperature.

In toric topology, to a simplicial complex $K$ with $m$ vertices, one associates two spaces, the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ and the Davis-Januszkiewicz space $DJ_K$. These spaces are connected by a homotopy fibration $\mathcal{Z}_K\to DJ_K\to(\mathbb{C}P^\infty)^m$. In this paper, we show that the map $\mathcal{Z}_K\to DJ_K$ is identified with a wedge of iterated (higher) Whitehead products for a certain class of simplicial complexes $K$ including dual shellable complexes. We will prove the result in a more general setting of polyhedral products.
On Lagrangians of $3$-uniform hypergraphs
Frankl and Füredi conjectured in 1989 that the maximum Lagrangian of all $r$-uniform hypergraphs of fixed size $m$ is realized by the minimum hypergraph $C_{r,m}$ under the colexicographic order. In this paper, we prove a weaker version of the Frankl and Füredi's conjecture at $r=3$: there exists an absolute constant $c>0$ such that for any $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with $m$ edges, the Lagrangian of $H$ satisfies $λ(H)\leq λ(C_{3,m+cm^{2/9}})$.
In particular, this result implies that the Frankl and Füredi's conjecture holds for $r=3$ and $m\in [{t-1\choose 3}, {t\choose 3}-(t-2)-ct^{\frac{2}{3}}]$. It improves a recent result of Tyomkyn.
