The Gaussian polynomial in variable $q$ is defined as the $q$-analog of the binomial coefficient. In addition to remarkable implications of these polynomials to abstract algebra, matrix theory and quantum computing, there is also a combinatorial interpretation through weighted lattice paths. This interpretation is equivalent to weighted board tilings, which can be used to establish Gaussian polynomial identities. In particular, we prove duals of such identities and evaluate related sums.

For a given graph $G=(V,E)$ and permutation $π:V\mapsto V$ the prism $πG$ of $G$ is defined as follows: $V(πG)=V(G)\cup V(G')$, where $G'$ is a copy of $G$, and $E(πG)=E(G)\cup E(G')\cup M_π$, where $M_π=\{uv': u\in V(G), v=π(u)\}$ and $v'$ denotes the copy of $v$ in $G'$.
We study and compare the properties of convex and weakly convex dominating sets in prism graphs. In particular, we characterize prism $γ_{con}$-fixers and -doublers. We also show that the differences $γ_{wcon}(G)-γ_{wcon}(πG)$ and $γ_{wcon}(πG) - 2γ_{wcon}(G)$ can be arbitrarily large, and that the convex domination number of $πG$ cannot be bounded in terms of $γ_{con}(G).$
A Plünnecke-Ruzsa inequality in compact abelian groups

The Plünnecke-Ruzsa inequality is a fundamental tool to control the growth of finite subsets of abelian groups under repeated addition and subtraction. Other tools to handle sumsets have gained applicability by being extended to more general subsets of more general groups. This motivates extending the Plünnecke-Ruzsa inequality, in particular to measurable subsets of compact abelian groups by replacing the cardinality with the Haar probability measure. This objective is related to the question of the stability of classes of Haar measurable sets under addition. In this direction the class of analytic sets is a natural one to work with. We prove a Plünnecke-Ruzsa inequality for K-analytic sets in general compact (Hausdorff) abelian groups. We also discuss further extensions, some of which raise questions of independent interest in descriptive topology.

In this paper we consider a distance-regular graph $Γ$. Fix a vertex $x$ of $Γ$ and consider the corresponding subconstituent algebra $T$. The algebra $T$ is the $\mathbb{C}$-algebra generated by the Bose-Mesner algebra $M$ of $Γ$ and the dual Bose-Mesner algebra $M^*$ of $Γ$ with respect to $x$. We consider the subspaces $M, M^*, MM^*, M^*M, MM^*M, M^*MM^*, \dots$ along with their intersections and sums. In our notation, $MM^*$ means $Span\{RS|R\in M, S\in M^*\}$, and so on. We introduce a diagram that describes how these subspaces are related. We describe in detail that part of the diagram up to $MM^*+M^*M$. For each subspace $U$ shown in this part of the diagram, we display an orthogonal basis for $U$ along with the dimension of $U$. For an edge $U\subseteq W$ from this part of the diagram, we display an orthogonal basis for the orthogonal complement of $U$ in $W$ along with the dimension of this orthogonal complement.
On perturbations of highly connected dyadic matroids

Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle [3] announced the following result: let $q = p^k$ be a prime power, and let $\mathcal{M}$ be a proper minor-closed class of $\mathrm{GF}(q)$-representable matroids, which does not contain $\mathrm{PG}(r-1,p)$ for sufficiently high $r$. There exist integers $k, t$ such that every vertically $k$-connected matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ is a rank-$(\leq t)$ perturbation of a frame matroid or the dual of a frame matroid over $\mathrm{GF}(q)$. They further announced a characterization of the perturbations through the introduction of subfield templates and frame templates.
We show a family of dyadic matroids that form a counterexample to this result. We offer several weaker conjectures to replace the ones in [3], discuss consequences for some published papers, and discuss the impact of these new conjectures on the structure of frame templates.
Throttling for the game of Cops and Robbers on graphs

We consider the cop-throttling number of a graph $G$ for the game of Cops and Robbers, which is defined to be the minimum of $(k + \text{capt}_k(G))$, where $k$ is the number of cops and $\text{capt}_k(G)$ is the minimum number of rounds needed for $k$ cops to capture the robber on $G$ over all possible games. We provide some tools for bounding the cop-throttling number, including showing that the positive semidefinite (PSD) throttling number, a variant of zero forcing throttling, is an upper bound for the cop-throttling number. We also characterize graphs having low cop-throttling number and investigate how large the cop-throttling number can be for a given graph. We consider trees, unicyclic graphs, incidence graphs of finite projective planes (a Meyniel extremal family of graphs), a family of cop-win graphs with maximum capture time, grids, and hypercubes. All the upper bounds on the cop-throttling number we obtain for families of graphs are $ O(\sqrt n)$.
The Edge-Wiener Index and the Edge-Hyper-Wiener Index of Phenylenes
Besides the well known Wiener index, which sums up the distances between all the pairs of vertices, and the hyper-Wiener index, which includes also the squares of distances, the edge versions of both indices attracted a lot of attention in the recent years.
In this paper we consider the edge-Wiener index and the edge-hyper-Wiener index of phenylenes, which represent an important class of molecular graphs. For an arbitrary phenylene, four quotient trees based on the elementary cuts are defined in a similar way as it was previously done for benzenoid systems. The computation of the edge-Wiener index of the phenylene is then reduced to the calculation of the weighted Wiener indices of the corresponding quotient trees. Furthermore, a method for computing the edge-hyper-Wiener index of phenylenes is described. Finally, the application of these results gives closed formulas for the edge-Wiener index and the edge-hyper-Wiener index of linear phenylenes.
On Fan-Crossing Graphs

A fan is a set of edges with a single common endpoint. A graph is fan-crossing if it admits a drawing in the plane so that each edge is crossed by edges of a fan. It is fan-planar if, in addition, the common endpoint is on the same side of the crossed edge. A graph is adjacency-crossing if it admits a drawing so that crossing edges are adjacent. Then it excludes independent crossings which are crossings by edges with no common endpoint. Adjacency-crossing allows triangle-crossings in which an edge crosses the edges of a triangle, which is excluded at fan-crossing graphs.
We show that every adjacency-crossing graph is fan-crossing. Thus triangle-crossings can be avoided. On the other hand, there are fan-crossing graphs that are not fan-planar, whereas for every fan-crossing graph there is a fan-planar graph on the same set of vertices and with the same number of edges. Hence, fan-crossing and fan-planar graphs are different, but they do not differ in their density with at most 5n - 10 edges for graphs of size n.
On the distribution of the eigenvalues of the area operator in loop quantum gravity

We study the distribution of the eigenvalues of the area operator in loop quantum gravity concentrating on the part of the spectrum relevant for isolated horizons. We first show that the approximations relying on integer partitions are not sufficient to obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalue distribution for large areas. We then develop a method, based on Laplace transforms, that provides a very accurate solution to this problem. The representation that we get is valid for any area and can be used to obtain its asymptotics in the large area limit.
Scattering fans

Scattering diagrams arose in the context of mirror symmetry, Donaldson-Thomas theory, and integrable systems. We show that a consistent scattering diagram with minimal support cuts the ambient space into a complete fan. A special class of scattering diagrams, the cluster scattering diagrams, are closely related to cluster algebras. We show that the cluster scattering fan associated to an exchange matrix $B$ refines the mutation fan for $B$ (a complete fan that encodes the geometry of mutations of $B$). We conjecture that, when $B$ is $n\times n$ for $n>2$, these two fans coincide if and only if $B$ is of finite mutation type.
On Sundaram's full bijection
We highlight refinement of a bijection given by Sheila Sundaram in her PhD thesis. The framework allows for comparison to a late conjecture of Naito-Sagaki. We give an injection of the set of dominant paths for this model into the corresponding set of Littlewood-Richardson Sundaram tableaux, which is not surjective. We relate this to the refinement of the aforementioned bijection.
Homomorphism thresholds for odd cycles

The interplay of minimum degree conditions and structural properties of large graphs with forbidden subgraphs is a central topic in extremal graph theory. For a given graph $F$ we define the homomorphism threshold as the infimum over all $α\in[0,1]$ such that every $n$-vertex $F$-free graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $αn$ has a homomorphic image $H$ of bounded order (independent of $n$), which is $F$-free as well. Without the restriction of $H$ being $F$-free we recover the definition of the chromatic threshold, which was determined for every graph $F$ by Allen et al. [Adv. Math. 235 (2013), 261-295]. The homomorphism threshold is less understood and we address the problem for odd cycles.
On dominating set polyhedra of circular interval graphs

Clique-node and closed neighborhood matrices of circular interval graphs are circular matrices. The stable set polytope and the dominating set polytope on these graphs are therefore closely related to the set packing polytope and the set covering polyhedron on circular matrices. Eisenbrand et al. take advantage of this relationship to propose a complete linear description of the stable set polytope on circular interval graphs. In this paper we follow similar ideas to obtain a complete description of the dominating set polytope on the same class of graphs. As in the packing case, our results are established for a larger class of covering polyhedra of the form Q*(A,b):= conv{x \in \Z^n_+: Ax >= b}, with A a circular matrix and b an integer vector. These results also provide linear descriptions of polyhedra associated with several variantsof the dominating set problem on circular interval graphs.

Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices is denoted by $ex(n,H,F)$. We investigate the function $ex(n,H,kF)$, where $kF$ denotes $k$ vertex disjoint copies of a fixed graph $F$. Our results include cases when $F$ is a complete graph, cycle or a complete bipartite graph.
Tables, bounds and graphics of short linear codes with covering radius 3 and codimension 4 and 5
The length function $\ell_q(r,R)$ is the smallest length of a $q$-ary linear code of codimension (redundancy) $r$ and covering radius $R$. The $d$-length function $\ell_q(r,R,d)$ is the smallest length of a $q$-ary linear code with codimension $r$, covering radius $R$, and minimum distance $d$. By computer search in wide regions of $q$, we obtained following short codes of covering radius $R=3$: $[n,n-4,5]_q3$ quasi-perfect MDS codes, $[n,n-5,5]_q3$ quasi-perfect Almost MDS codes, and $[n,n-5,3]_q3$ codes. In computer search, we use the step-by-step leximatrix and inverse leximatrix algorithms to obtain parity check matrices of codes. The new codes imply the following new upper bounds (called lexi-bounds) on the length and $d$-length functions: $$\ell_q(4,3)\le\ell_q(4,3,5)<2.8\sqrt[3]{\ln q}\cdot q^{(4-3)/3}=2.8\sqrt[3]{\ln q}\cdot\sqrt[3]{q}=2.8\sqrt[3]{q\ln q}~\text{for}~11\le q\le7057;$$ $$\ell_q(5,3)\le\ell_q(5,3,5)<3\sqrt[3]{\ln q}\cdot q^{(5-3)/3}=3\sqrt[3]{\ln q}\cdot\sqrt[3]{q^2}=3\sqrt[3]{q^2\ln q}~~\text{ for }~37\le q\le839.$$ Moreover, we improve the lexi-bounds, applying randomized greedy algorithms, and show that $$\ell_q(4,3)\le \ell_q(4,3,5)< 2.61\sqrt[3]{q\ln q}~\text{ if }~13\le q\le4373;$$ $$\ell_q(4,3)\le \ell_q(4,3,5)< 2.65\sqrt[3]{q\ln q}~\text{ if }~4373<q\le7057;$$ $$\ell_q(5,3)<2.785\sqrt[3]{q^2\ln q}~\text{ if }~11\le q\le401;$$ $$\ell_q(5,3)\le\ell_q(5,3,5)<2.884\sqrt[3]{q^2\ln q}~\text{ if }~401<q\le839.$$ The codes, obtained in this paper by leximatrix and inverse leximatrix algorithms, provide new upper bounds (called density lexi-bounds) on the smallest covering density $μ_q(r,R)$ of a $q$-ary linear code of codimension $r$ and covering radius $R$: $$μ_q(4,3)<3.3\cdot\ln q~~\text{ for }~11\le q\le7057;$$ $$μ_q(5,3)<4.2\cdot\ln q~~\text{ for }~37\le q\le839.$$

Given a graph $H$ and a set of graphs $\mathcal F$, let $ex(n,H,\mathcal F)$ denote the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $\mathcal F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We investigate the function $ex(n,H,\mathcal F)$, when $H$ and members of $\mathcal F$ are cycles. Let $C_k$ denote the cycle of length $k$ and let $\mathscr C_k=\{C_3,C_4,\ldots,C_k\}$. Some of our main results are the following.
(i) We show that $ex(n, C_{2l}, C_{2k}) = Θ(n^l)$ for any $l, k \ge 2$. Moreover, we determine it asymptotically in the following cases: We show that $ex(n,C_4,C_{2k}) = (1+o(1)) \frac{(k-1)(k-2)}{4} n^2$ and that the maximum possible number of $C_6$'s in a $C_8$-free bipartite graph is $n^3 + O(n^{5/2})$.
(ii) Solymosi and Wong proved that if Erdős's Girth Conjecture holds, then for any $l \ge 3$ we have $ex(n,C_{2l},\mathscr C_{2l-1})=Θ(n^{2l/(l-1)})$. We prove that forbidding any other even cycle decreases the number of $C_{2l}$'s significantly: For any $k > l$, we have $ex(n,C_{2l},\mathscr C_{2l-1} \cup \{C_{2k}\})=Θ(n^2).$ More generally, we show that for any $k > l$ and $m \ge 2$ such that $2k \neq ml$, we have $ex(n,C_{ml},\mathscr C_{2l-1} \cup \{C_{2k}\})=Θ(n^m).$
(iii) We prove $ex(n,C_{2l+1},\mathscr C_{2l})=Θ(n^{2+1/l}),$ provided a strong version of Erdős's Girth Conjecture holds (which is known to be true when $l = 2, 3, 5$). Moreover, forbidding one more cycle decreases the number of $C_{2l+1}$'s significantly: More precisely, we have $ex(n, C_{2l+1}, \mathscr C_{2l} \cup \{C_{2k}\}) = O(n^{2-\frac{1}{l+1}}),$ and $ex(n, C_{2l+1}, \mathscr C_{2l} \cup \{C_{2k+1}\}) = O(n^2)$ for $l > k \ge 2$.
(iv) We also study the maximum number of paths of given length in a $C_k$-free graph, and prove asymptotically sharp bounds in some cases.

Let $ω(G)$ be the size of a maximum clique in $G$, and $\tw(G)$ be the treewidth of $G$. We prove that $ \lpt(G) \leq \max\{1,ω(G)-2\}$ when $G$ is a connected chordal graph; that $\lpt(G) =1$ when $G$ is a connected bipartite permutation graph or a connected full substar graph; and that $\lpt(G) \leq \tw(G)$ for any connected graph $G$.

The degree-diameter problem seeks to find the largest possible number of vertices in a graph having given diameter and given maximum degree. There has been much recent interest in the problem for mixed graphs, where we allow both undirected edges and directed arcs in the graph. For a diameter 2 graph with maximum undirected degree $r$ and directed out-degree $z$, a straightforward counting argument yields an upper bound $M(z,r,2)=(z+r)^2+z+1$ for the order of the graph. Apart from the case $r=1$, the only three known examples of mixed graphs attaining this bound are Cayley graphs, and there are an infinite number of feasible pairs $(r,z)$ where the existence of mixed Moore graphs with these parameters is unknown. We use a combination of elementary group-theoretical arguments and computational techniques to rule out the existence of further examples of mixed Cayley graphs attaining the Moore bound for all orders up to 485.
