Parallelogram polyominoes, partially labelled Dyck paths, and the Delta conjecture (FULL VERSION)
We introduce area, bounce and dinv statistics on decorated parallelogram polyominoes, and prove that some of their q,t-enumerators match $\langle Δ_{h_m} e_{n+1},s_{k+1,1^{n-k}}\rangle$, extending in this way the work in (Aval et al. 2014). Also, we provide a bijective connection between decorated parallelogram polyominoes and decorated labelled Dyck paths, which allows us to prove the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficient $\langle Δ_{e_{m+n-k-1}}'e_{m+n},h_m h_n\rangle$ predicted by the Delta conjecture in (Haglund et al. 2015). Finally, we define a statistic pmaj on partially labelled Dyck paths, which provides another conjectural combinatorial interpretation of $Δ_{h_{\ell}}Δ_{e_{n-k-1}}'e_n$, cf. (Haglund et al. 2015). This is the full version of (D'Adderio, Iraci 2017) arXiv:1711.03923.

Some Generalizations of Spivey's Bell Number Formula
Published in Matimyas Matematika, Vol. 40 No.1 (2017) pp. 1-12 • Search Publication
In this paper, a generalized recurrence relation for the $r$-Whitney numbers of the second kind is derived using as framework the operators $X$ and $D$ satisfying the commutation relation $DX-XD=1$. This recurrence relation is shown to be a generalization of the well-known Spivey's Bell number. Moreover, several other identities generalizing Spivey's Bell number formula are obtained.

Hypergraphic polytopes: combinatorial properties and antipode
Published in J. Comb. 10 (2019), no. 3, 515-544 • View Publication • BIB
In an earlier paper, the first two authors defined orientations on hypergraphs. Using this definition we provide an explicit bijection between acyclic orientations in hypergraphs and faces of hypergraphic polytopes. This allows us to obtain a geometric interpretation of the coefficients of the antipode map in a Hopf algebra of hypergraphs. This interpretation differs from similar ones for a different Hopf structure on hypergraphs provided recently by Aguiar and Ardila. Furthermore, making use of the tools and definitions developed here regarding orientations of hypergraphs we provide a characterization of hypergraphs giving rise to simple hypergraphic polytopes in terms of acyclic orientations of the hypergraph. In particular, we recover this fact for the nestohedra and the hyper-permutahedra, and prove it for generalized Pitman-Stanley polytopes as defined here.

Bricks over preprojective algebras and join-irreducible elements in Coxeter groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
A (semi)brick over an algebra $A$ is a module $S$ such that the endomorphism ring $\operatorname{\mathsf{End}}_A(S)$ is a (product of) division algebra. For each Dynkin diagram $Δ$, there is a bijection from the Coxeter group $W$ of type $Δ$ to the set of semibricks over the preprojective algebra $Π$ of type $Δ$, which is restricted to a bijection from the set of join-irreducible elements of $W$ to the set of bricks over $Π$. This paper is devoted to giving an explicit description of these bijections in the case $Δ=\mathbb{A}_n$ or $\mathbb{D}_n$. First, for each join-irreducible element $w \in W$, we describe the corresponding brick $S(w)$ in terms of "Young diagram-like" notation. Next, we determine the canonical join representation $w=\bigvee_{i=1}^m w_i$ of an arbitrary element $w \in W$ based on Reading's work, and prove that $\bigoplus_{i=1}^n S(w_i)$ is the semibrick corresponding to $w$.

Connected Vertex Cover for $(sP_1+P_5)$-Free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Connected Vertex Cover problem is to decide if a graph G has a vertex cover of size at most $k$ that induces a connected subgraph of $G$. This is a well-studied problem, known to be NP-complete for restricted graph classes, and, in particular, for $H$-free graphs if $H$ is not a linear forest (a graph is $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph). It is easy to see that Connected Vertex Cover is polynomial-time solvable for $P_4$-free graphs. We continue the search for tractable graph classes: we prove that it is also polynomial-time solvable for $(sP_1+P_5)$-free graphs for every integer $s\geq 0$.
Notes on complexity of packing coloring
Published in Information Processing Letters 137 (2018) 6-10 • View Publication • BIB
A packing $k$-coloring for some integer $k$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a mapping $\varphi:V\to\{1,\ldots,k\}$ such that any two vertices $u, v$ of color $\varphi(u)=\varphi(v)$ are in distance at least $\varphi(u)+1$. This concept is motivated by frequency assignment problems. The \emph{packing chromatic number} of $G$ is the smallest $k$ such that there exists a packing $k$-coloring of $G$. Fiala and Golovach showed that determining the packing chromatic number for chordal graphs is \NP-complete for diameter exactly 5. While the problem is easy to solve for diameter 2, we show \NP-completeness for any diameter at least 3. Our reduction also shows that the packing chromatic number is hard to approximate within $n^{{1/2}-\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilon > 0$. In addition, we design an \FPT algorithm for interval graphs of bounded diameter. This leads us to exploring the problem of finding a partial coloring that maximizes the number of colored vertices.

Jónsson posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
According to Kearnes and Oman (2013), an ordered set $P$ is \emph{Jónsson} if it is infinite and the cardinality of every proper initial segment of $P$ is strictly less than the cardinaliy of $P$. We examine the structure of Jónsson posets.

A syntactic approach to the MacNeille completion of $\boldΛ^{\ast}$, the free monoid over an ordered alphabet $\bold Λ$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Λ^{\ast}$ be the free monoid of (finite) words over a not necessarily finite alphabet $Λ$, which is equipped with some (partial) order. This ordering lifts to $Λ^{\ast}$, where it extends the divisibility ordering of words. The MacNeille completion of $Λ^{\ast}$ constitutes a complete lattice ordered monoid and is realized by the system of "closed" lower sets in $Λ^*$ (ordered by inclusion) or its isomorphic copy formed of the "closed" upper sets (ordered by reverse inclusion). Under some additional hypothesis on $Λ$, one can easily identify the closed lower sets as the finitely generated ones, whereas it is more complicated to determine the closed upper sets. For a fairly large class of ordered sets $Λ$ (including complete lattices as well as antichains) one can generate the closure of any upper set of words by means of binary operations ( "syntactic rules") thus obtaining an efficient procedure to test closedness. Closed upper set of words are involved in an embedding theorem for valuated oriented graphs. In fact, generalized paths (so-called "zigzags") are encoded by words over an alphabet $Λ$. Then the valuated oriented graphs which are "isometrically" embeddable in a product of zigzags have the characteristic property that the words corresponding to the zigzags between any pair of vertices form a closed upper set in $Λ$.

Canonical Bases for Permutohedral Plates
We study three finite-dimensional quotient vector spaces constructed from the linear span of the set of characteristic functions of permutohedral cones by imposing two kinds of constraints: (1) neglect characteristic functions of higher codimension permutohedral cones, and (2) neglect characteristic functions of non-pointed permutohedral cones. We construct an ordered basis which is canonical, in the sense that it has subsets which map onto ordered bases for the quotients. We present straightening relations to the canonical basis, and using Laplace transforms we obtain functional representations for each quotient space.

Homology of Finite Topological Spaces
A new method is given for computing generators of the homology groups with integer coefficients for any finite $T_0$-space. An important role in this method is played by irreducible cycles which are defined here and give rise to continuous injective maps between spaces called immersions. The so-called orb complex which is much smaller than the order complex induces a surjective map of its homology to the simplicial homology of the space. An analysis of the kernel of this map allows to define an effective algorithm for computing the homology groups, whose time complexity is polynomial in the size of the space.
The Binomial Spin Glass
Published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 080601 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
To establish a unified framework for studying both discrete and continuous coupling distributions, we introduce the {\it binomial} spin glass, a class of models where the couplings are sums of $m$ identically distributed Bernoulli random variables. In the continuum limit $m \to \infty$, the class reduces to one with Gaussian couplings, while $m=1$ corresponds to the $\pm J$ spin glass. We demonstrate that for short-range Ising models on $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattices the ground-state entropy density for $N$ spins is bounded from above by $(\sqrt{d/2m} + 1/N)\ln2$, and further show that the actual entropies follow the scaling behavior implied by this bound. We thus uncover a fundamental non-commutativity of the thermodynamic and continuous coupling limits that leads to the presence or absence of degeneracies depending on the precise way the limits are taken. Exact calculations of defect energies reveal a crossover length scale $L^\ast(m) \sim L^κ$ below which the binomial spin glass is indistinguishable from the Gaussian system. Since $κ= -1/(2θ)$, where $θ$ is the spin-stiffness exponent, discrete couplings become irrelevant at large scales for systems with a finite-temperature spin-glass phase.
Combinatorial structure of colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials for torus knots
Published in Commun. Number Theory Phys. 13 (2019), no. 4, 763-826 • View Publication • BIB
We rewrite the (extended) Ooguri-Vafa partition function for colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials for torus knots in terms of the free-fermion (semi-infinite wedge) formalism, making it very similar to the generating function for double Hurwitz numbers. This allows us to conjecture the combinatorial meaning of full expansion of the correlation differentials obtained via the topological recursion on the Brini-Eynard-Mariño spectral curve for the colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of torus knots. This correspondence suggests a structural combinatorial result for the extended Ooguri-Vafa partition function. Namely, its coefficients should have a quasi-polynomial behavior, where non-polynomial factors are given by the Jacobi polynomials. We prove this quasi-polynomiality in a purely combinatorial way. In addition to that, we show that the (0,1)- and (0,2)-functions on the corresponding spectral curve are in agreement with the extension of the colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials data.

Enumeration of words that contain the pattern 123 exactly once
Published • View Publication • BIB
Enumeration problems related to words avoiding patterns as well as permutations that contain the pattern $123$ exactly once have been studied in great detail. However, the problem of enumerating words that contain the pattern $123$ exactly once is new and will be the focus of this paper. Previously, Doron Zeilberger provided a shortened version of Alexander Burstein's combinatorial proof of John Noonan's theorem that the number of permutations with exactly one $321$ pattern is equal to $\frac{3}{n} \binom{2n}{n+3}$. Surprisingly, a similar method can be directly adapted to words. We are able to use this method to find a formula enumerating the words with exactly one $123$ pattern. Further inspired by Nathaniel Shar and Zeilberger's paper on generating functions enumerating 123-avoiding words with $r$ occurrences of each letter, we examine the algebraic equations for generating functions for words with $r$ occurrences of each letter and with exactly one $123$ pattern.

Modular periodicity of the Euler numbers and a sequence by Arnold
Published in Arnold Math. J., 3(4), 519-524, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
For any positive integer $q$, the sequence of the Euler up/down numbers reduced modulo $q$ was proved to be ultimately periodic by Knuth and Buckholtz. Based on computer simulations, we state for each value of $q$ precise conjectures for the minimal period and for the position at which the sequence starts being periodic. When $q$ is a power of $2$, a sequence defined by Arnold appears, and we formulate a conjecture for a simple computation of this sequence.

Maximizing the density of $K_t$'s in graphs of bounded degree and clique number
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 343, Issue 6, June 2020, 111803 • View Publication • BIB
Zykov showed in 1949 that among graphs on $n$ vertices with clique number $ω(G) \le ω$, the Turán graph $T_ω(n)$ maximizes not only the number of edges but also the number of copies of $K_t$ for each size $t$. The problem of maximizing the number of copies of $K_t$ has also been studied within other classes of graphs, such as those on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $Δ(G) \le Δ$. We combine these restrictions and investigate which graphs with $Δ(G) \le Δ$ and $ω(G) \le ω$ maximize the number of copies of $K_t$ per vertex. We define $f_t(Δ,ω)$ as the supremum of $ρ_t$, the number of copies of $K_t$ per vertex, among such graphs, and show for fixed $t$ and $ω$ that $f_t(Δ,ω) = (1+o(1))ρ_t(T_ω(Δ+\lfloor\fracΔ{ω-1}\rfloor))$. For two infinite families of pairs $(Δ,ω)$, we determine $f_t(Δ,ω)$ exactly for all $t\ge 3$. For another we determine $f_t(Δ,ω)$ exactly for the two largest possible clique sizes. Finally, we demonstrate that not every pair $(Δ,ω)$ has an extremal graph that simultaneously maximizes the number of copies of $K_t$ per vertex for every size $t$.

Cyclic Sieving of Matchings
The cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) was introduced by Reiner, Stanton, and White to study combinatorial structures with actions of cyclic groups. The crucial step is to find a polynomial, for example a q-analog, that satisfies the CSP conditions for an action. This polynomial will give us a lot of information about the symmetry and structure of the set under the action. In this paper, we study the cyclic sieving phenomenon of the cyclic group $C_{2n}$ acting on $P_{n,k}$, which is the set of matchings of $2n$ points on a circle with $k$ crossings. The noncrossing matchings ($k=0$) was recently studied as a Catalan object. In this paper, we study more general cases, the matchings with more number of crossings. We prove that there exists $q$-analog polynomials $f_{n,k}(q)$ such that $(P_{n,k},f_{n,k},C_{2n})$ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon for $k=1,2,3$. In the proof, we also introduce an efficient representation of the elements in $P_{n,k}$, which helps us to understand the symmetrical structure of the set.
Tilings of hyperbolic $(2\times n)$-board with colored squares and dominoes

In this article, we examine the tiling problem with colored squares and dominoes of one type of the possible hyperbolic generalization of $(2\times n)$-board.

We also determine explicitly the sizes of these classes when the set $X$ is finite.
