A combinatorial description of the centralizer algebras connected to the Links-Gould Invariant
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 21 (2021) 1553-1593 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the tensor powers of the standard representation of the quantum super-algebra $U_q(sl(2|1)$, focusing on the rings of its algebra endomorphisms, called centraliser algebras and denoted by $LG_n$. Their dimensions were conjectured by I. Marin and E. Wagner \cite{MW}. We prove this conjecture, describing the intertwiner spaces from a semi-simple decomposition as sets consisting of certain paths in a planar lattice with integer coordinates. Using this model, we present a matrix unit basis for the centraliser algebra $LG_n$, by means of closed curves in the plane, which are included in the lattice with integer coordinates.
Distance magic labelings of product graphs
A graph $G$ is said to be distance magic if there exists a bijection $f:V\rightarrow \{1,2, \ldots , v\}$ and a constant {\sf k} such that for any vertex $x$, $\sum_{y\in N(x)} f(y) ={\sf k}$, where $N_(x)$ is the set of all neighbours of $x$. In this paper we shall study distance magic labelings of graphs obtained from four graph products: cartesian, strong, lexicographic, and cronecker. We shall utilise magic rectangle sets and magic column rectangles to construct the labelings.

Determining the trisection genus of orientable and non-orientable PL 4-manifolds through triangulations
Published in 34th International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2018), Leibniz International Proceedings in Informatics (LIPIcs), vol. 99, 71:1-71:13, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
Gay and Kirby recently introduced the concept of a trisection for arbitrary smooth, oriented closed 4-manifolds, and with it a new topological invariant, called the trisection genus. This paper improves and implements an algorithm due to Bell, Hass, Rubinstein and Tillmann to compute trisections using triangulations, and extends it to non-orientable 4-manifolds. Lower bounds on trisection genus are given in terms of Betti numbers and used to determine the trisection genus of all standard simply connected PL 4-manifolds. In addition, we construct trisections of small genus directly from the simplicial structure of triangulations using the Budney-Burton census of closed triangulated 4-manifolds. These experiments include the construction of minimal genus trisections of the non-orientable 4-manifolds $S^3 \tilde{\times} S^1$ and $\mathbb{R}P^4$.

The List Linear Arboricity of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A linear forest is a forest in which every connected component is a path. The linear arboricity of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of linear forests of $G$ covering all edges. In 1980, Akiyama, Exoo and Harary proposed a conjecture, known as the Linear Arboricity Conjecture (LAC), stating that every $d$-regular graph $G$ has linear arboricity $\lceil \frac{d+1}{2} \rceil$. In 1988, Alon proved that the LAC holds asymptotically. In 1999, the list version of the LAC was raised by An and Wu, which is called the List Linear Arboricity Conjecture. In this article, we prove that the List Linear Arboricity Conjecture holds asymptotically.

Permuted composition tableaux, 0-Hecke algebra and labeled binary trees
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 161: 420--452 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a generalization of semistandard composition tableaux called permuted composition tableaux. These tableaux are intimately related to permuted basement semistandard augmented fillings studied by Haglund, Mason and Remmel. Our primary motivation for studying permuted composition tableaux is to enumerate all possible ordered pairs of permutations $(σ_1,σ_2)$ that can be obtained by standardizing the entries in two adjacent columns of an arbitrary composition tableau. We refer to such pairs as compatible pairs. To study compatible pairs in depth, we define a $0$-Hecke action on permuted composition tableaux. This action naturally defines an equivalence relation on these tableaux. Certain distinguished representatives of the resulting equivalence classes in the special case of two-columned tableaux are in bijection with compatible pairs. We provide a bijection between two-columned tableaux and labeled binary trees. This bijection maps a quadruple of descent statistics for 2-columned tableaux to left and right ascent-descent statistics on labeled binary trees introduced by Gessel, and we use it to prove that the number of compatible pairs is $(n+1)^{n-1}$.

Parametrizations of $k$-Nonnegative Matrices: Cluster Algebras and $k$-Positivity Tests
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 174 (2020), 105217 • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-positive matrix is a matrix where all minors of order $k$ or less are positive. Computing all such minors to test for $k$-positivity is inefficient, as there are $\sum_{\ell=1}^k \binom{n}{\ell}^2$ of them in an $n\times n$ matrix. However, there are minimal $k$-positivity tests which only require testing $n^2$ minors. These minimal tests can be related by series of exchanges, and form a family of sub-cluster algebras of the cluster algebra of total positivity tests. We give a description of the sub-cluster algebras that give $k$-positivity tests, ways to move between them, and an alternative combinatorial description of many of the tests.

Convexity in ordered matroids and the generalized external order
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27(3) (2020), P3.41 • View Publication • BIB
In 1980, Las Vergnas defined a notion of discrete convexity for oriented matroids, which Edelman subsequently related to the theory of anti-exchange closure functions and convex geometries. In this paper, we use generalized matroid activity to construct a convex geometry associated with an ordered, unoriented matroid. The construction in particular yields a new type of representability for an ordered matroid defined by the affine representability of its corresponding convex geometry. The lattice of convex sets of this convex geometry induces an ordering on the matroid independent sets which extends the external active order on matroid bases. We show that this generalized external order forms a supersolvable meet-distributive lattice refining the geometric lattice of flats, and we uniquely characterize the lattices isomorphic to the external order of a matroid. Finally, we introduce a new trivariate generating function generalizing the matroid Tutte polynomial.
Hypergraphs not containing a tight tree with a bounded trunk
An $r$-uniform hypergraph is a tight $r$-tree if its edges can be ordered so that every edge $e$ contains a vertex $v$ that does not belong to any preceding edge and the set $e-v$ lies in some preceding edge. A conjecture of Kalai [Kalai], generalizing the Erdős-Sós Conjecture for trees, asserts that if $T$ is a tight $r$-tree with $t$ edges and $G$ is an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph containing no copy of $T$ then $G$ has at most $\frac{t-1}{r}\binom{n}{r-1}$ edges. A trunk $T'$ of a tight $r$-tree $T$ is a tight subtree such that every edge of $T-T'$ has $r-1$ vertices in some edge of $T'$ and a vertex outside $T'$. For $r\ge 3$, the only nontrivial family of tight $r$-trees for which this conjecture has been proved is the family of $r$-trees with trunk size one in [FF] from 1987. Our main result is an asymptotic version of Kalai's conjecture for all tight trees $T$ of bounded trunk size. This follows from our upper bound on the size of a $T$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$ in terms of the size of its shadow. We also give a short proof of Kalai's conjecture for tight $r$-trees with at most four edges. In particular, for $3$-uniform hypergraphs, our result on the tight path of length $4$ implies the intersection shadow theorem of Katona [Katona].

Towards a proof of the 24-cell conjecture
Published in Acta Math. Hungar., 155:1 (2018), 184-199 • View Publication • BIB
This review paper is devoted to the problems of sphere packings in 4 dimensions. The main goal is to find reasonable approaches for solutions to problems related to densest sphere packings in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. We consider two long-standing open problems: the uniqueness of maximum kissing arrangements in 4 dimensions and the 24-cell conjecture. Note that a proof of the 24-cell conjecture also proves that the checkerboard lattice packing D4 is the densest sphere packing in 4 dimensions.

Topology of Privacy: Lattice Structures and Information Bubbles for Inference and Obfuscation
Information has intrinsic geometric and topological structure, arising from relative relationships beyond absolute values or types. For instance, the fact that two people share a meal describes a relationship independent of the meal's ingredients. Multiple such relationships give rise to relations and their lattices. Lattices have topology. That topology informs the ways in which information may be observed, hidden, inferred, and dissembled. Dowker's Theorem establishes a homotopy equivalence between two simplicial complexes derived from a relation. From a privacy perspective, one complex describes individuals with common attributes, the other describes attributes shared by individuals. The homotopy equivalence produces a lattice. An element in the lattice consists of two components, one being a set of individuals, the other being a set of attributes. The lattice operations join and meet each amount to set intersection in one component and set union followed by a potentially privacy-puncturing inference in the other component. Privacy loss appears as simplicial collapse of free faces. Such collapse is local, but the property of fully preserving both attribute and association privacy requires a global condition: a particular kind of spherical hole. By looking at the link of an identifiable individual in its encompassing Dowker complex, one can characterize that individual's attribute privacy via another sphere condition. Even when long-term attribute privacy is impossible, homology provides lower bounds on how an individual may defer identification, when that individual has control over how to reveal attributes. Intuitively, the idea is to first reveal information that could otherwise be inferred. This last result highlights privacy as a dynamic process. Privacy loss may be cast as gradient flow. Harmonic flow for privacy preservation may be fertile ground for future research.

Attaching leaves and picking cherries to characterise the hybridisation number for a set of phylogenies
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 105:102-129, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
Throughout the last decade, we have seen much progress towards characterising and computing the minimum hybridisation number for a set P of rooted phylogenetic trees. Roughly speaking, this minimum quantifies the number of hybridisation events needed to explain a set of phylogenetic trees by simultaneously embedding them into a phylogenetic network. From a mathematical viewpoint, the notion of agreement forests is the underpinning concept for almost all results that are related to calculating the minimum hybridisation number for when |P|=2. However, despite various attempts, characterising this number in terms of agreement forests for |P|>2 remains elusive. In this paper, we characterise the minimum hybridisation number for when P is of arbitrary size and consists of not necessarily binary trees. Building on our previous work on cherry-picking sequences, we first establish a new characterisation to compute the minimum hybridisation number in the space of tree-child networks. Subsequently, we show how this characterisation extends to the space of all rooted phylogenetic networks. Moreover, we establish a particular hardness result that gives new insight into some of the limitations of agreement forests.

Dynamic Discrete Tomography
Published in Inverse Problems, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of reconstructing the paths of a set of points over time, where, at each of a finite set of moments in time the current positions of points in space are only accessible through some small number of their X-rays. This particular particle tracking problem, with applications, e.g., in plasma physics, is the basic problem in dynamic discrete tomography. We introduce and analyze various different algorithmic models. In particular, we determine the computational complexity of the problem (and various of its relatives) and derive algorithms that can be used in practice. As a byproduct we provide new results on constrained variants of min-cost flow and matching problems.

Piecewise interlacing zeros of polynomials
We introduce the concept of piecewise interlacing zeros for studying the relation of root distribution of two polynomials. The concept is pregnant with an idea of confirming the real-rootedness of polynomials in a sequence. Roughly speaking, one constructs a collection of disjoint intervals such that one may show by induction that consecutive polynomials have interlacing zeros over each of the intervals. We confirm the real-rootedness of some polynomials satisfying a recurrence with linear polynomial coefficients. This extends Gross et al.'s work where one of the polynomial coefficients is a constant.

On some Graphs with a Unique Perfect Matching
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that deciding whether a given graph $G$ of size $m$ has a unique perfect matching as well as finding that matching, if it exists, can be done in time $O(m)$ if $G$ is either a cograph, or a split graph, or an interval graph, or claw-free. Furthermore, we provide a constructive characterization of the claw-free graphs with a unique perfect matching.

Common zeros of polynomials satisfying a recurrence of order two
We give a characterization of common zeros of a sequence of univariate polynomials $W_n(z)$ defined by a recurrence of order two with polynomial coefficients, and with $W_0(z)=1$. Real common zeros for such polynomials with real coefficients are studied further. This paper contributes to the study of root distribution of recursive polynomial sequences.

Semi-reflexive polytopes
The Ehrhart function $L_P(t)$ of a polytope $P$ is usually defined only for integer dilation arguments $t$. By allowing arbitrary real numbers as arguments we may also detect integer points entering (or leaving) the polytope in fractional dilations of $P$, thus giving more information about the polytope. Nevertheless, there are some polytopes that only gain new integer points for integer values of $t$; that is, these polytopes satisfy $L_P(t) = L_P(\lfloor t \rfloor)$. We call those polytopes semi-reflexive. In this paper, we give a characterization of these polytopes in terms of their hyperplane description, and we use this characterization to show that a polytope is reflexive if and only if both it and its dual are semi-reflexive.

An Erdős-Gallai type theorem for vertex colored graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics (2019) 35 • View Publication • BIB
While investigating odd-cycle free hypergraphs, Győri and Lemons introduced a colored version of the classical theorem of Erdős and Gallai on $P_k$-free graphs. They proved that any graph $G$ with a proper vertex coloring and no path of length $2k+1$ with endpoints of different colors has at most $2kn$ edges. We show that Erdős and Gallai's original sharp upper bound of $kn$ holds for their problem as well. We also introduce a version of this problem for trees and present a generalization of the Erdős-Sós conjecture.
