Graphs with degree complete labeling
In 2006 Qian [J. Qian, Degree complete graphs; Discrete Mathematics 306 (2006), 533--537] introduced the concept of degree complete graphs for labeled graphs. He also gave a characterization of these graphs in terms of two forbidden subgraphs. Furthermore, he mentioned that the property of being degree complete depends on the labeling of the graph. Related to this he stated the problem to find a characterization of those (unlabeled) graphs for which every labeled version is not degree complete. We say that a (unlabeled) graph has a degree complete labeling, if there is a labeled version of the graph that is degree complete. In this paper we give three characterizations of graphs with degree complete labeling. These characterizations give us polynomial-time procedures to recognize these graphs and find a degree complete labeling, if it exists.

Parabolic Catalan numbers count flagged Schur functions and their appearances as type A Demazure characters (key polynomials)
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 3, Combinatorics (December 5, 2017) dmtcs:3727 • View Publication • BIB
Fix an integer partition lambda that has no more than n parts. Let beta be a weakly increasing n-tuple with entries from {1,..,n}. The flagged Schur function indexed by lambda and beta is a polynomial generating function in x_1, .., x_n for certain semistandard tableaux of shape lambda. Let pi be an n-permutation. The type A Demazure character (key polynomial, Demazure polynomial) indexed by lambda and pi is another such polynomial generating function. Reiner and Shimozono and then Postnikov and Stanley studied coincidences between these two families of polynomials. Here their results are sharpened by the specification of unique representatives for the equivalence classes of indexes for both families of polynomials, extended by the consideration of more general beta, and deepened by proving that the polynomial coincidences also hold at the level of the underlying tableau sets. Let R be the set of lengths of columns in the shape of lambda that are less than n. Ordered set partitions of {1,..,n} with block sizes determined by R, called R-permutations, are used to describe the minimal length representatives for the parabolic quotient of the nth symmetric group specified by the set {1,..,n-1}\R. The notion of 312-avoidance is generalized from n-permutations to these set partitions. The R-parabolic Catalan number is defined to be the number of these. Every flagged Schur function arises as a Demazure polynomial. Those Demazure polynomials are precisely indexed by the R-312-avoiding R-permutations. Hence the number of flagged Schur functions that are distinct as polynomials is shown to be the R-parabolic Catalan number. The projecting and lifting processes that relate the notions of 312-avoidance and of R-312-avoidance are described with maps developed for other purposes.

A Survey on Monochromatic Connections of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The concept of monochromatic connection of graphs was introduced by Caro and Yuster in 2011. Recently, a lot of results have been published about it. In this survey, we attempt to bring together all the results that dealt with it. We begin with an introduction, and then classify the results into the following categories: monochromatic connection coloring of edge-version, monochromatic connection coloring of vertex-version, monochromatic index, monochromatic connection coloring of total-version.

The Hopf algebra of skew shapes, torsion sheaves on A^n/F_1, and ideals in Hall algebras of monoid representations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study ideals in Hall algebras of monoid representations on pointed sets corresponding to certain conditions on the representations. These conditions include the property that the monoid act via partial permutations, that the representation possess a compatible grading, and conditions on the support of the module. Quotients by these ideals lead to combinatorial Hopf algebras which can be interpreted as Hall algebras of certain sub-categories of modules. In the case of the free commutative monoid on n generators, we obtain a co-commutative Hopf algebra structure on $n$-dimensional skew shapes, whose underlying associative product amounts to a "stacking" operation on the skew shapes. The primitive elements of this Hopf algebra correspond to connected skew shapes, and form a graded Lie algebra by anti-symmetrizing the associative product. We interpret this Hopf algebra as the Hall algebra of a certain category of coherent torsion sheaves on $\mathbb{A}_{/ \mathbb{F}_1}^n$ supported at the origin, where $\mathbb{F}_1$ denotes the field of one element. This Hopf algebra may be viewed as an $n$-dimensional generalization of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, which corresponds to the case $n=1$.

Hypergraphical Clustering Games of Mis-Coordination
We introduce and motivate the study of hypergraphical clustering games of mis-coordination. For two specific variants we prove the existence of a pure Nash equilibrium and provide bounds on the price of anarchy as a function of the cardinality of the action set and the size of the hyperedges.

Optimization over Degree Sequences
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 32:2067--2079, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study the problem of optimizing arbitrary functions over degree sequences of hypergraphs and multihypergraphs. We show that over multihypergraphs the problem can be solved in polynomial time. For hypergraphs, we show that deciding if a given sequence is the degree sequence of a 3-hypergraph is NP-complete, thereby solving a 30 year long open problem. This implies that optimization over hypergraphs is hard already for simple concave functions. In contrast, we show that for graphs, if the functions at vertices are the same, then the problem is polynomial time solvable. We also provide positive results for convex optimization over multihypergraphs and graphs and exploit connections to degree sequence polytopes and threshold graphs. We then elaborate on connections to the emerging theory of shifted combinatorial optimization.

Reverse juggling processes
Published in Random Structures & Algorithms, 55 no. 1 (2019), 56-72 • View Publication • BIB
Knutson introduced two families of reverse juggling Markov chains (single and multispecies) motivated by the study of random semi-infinite matrices over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We present natural generalizations of both chains by placing generic weights that still lead to simple combinatorial expressions for the stationary distribution. For permutations, this is a seemingly new multivariate generalization of the inversion polynomial.
Minimum supports of eigenfunctions of Johnson graphs
We study the weights of eigenvectors of the Johnson graphs $J(n,w)$. For any $i \in \{1,\ldots,w\}$ and sufficiently large $n, n\geq n(i,w)$ we show that an eigenvector of $J(n,w)$ with the eigenvalue $λ_i=(n-w-i)(w-i)-i$ has at least $2^i(^{n-2i}_{w-i})$ nonzeros and obtain a characterization of eigenvectors that attain the bound.

Minimal Embedding Dimensions of Connected Neural Codes
Published in Algebraic Statistics 11, 1 (2020) 99-106 • View Publication • BIB
In the past few years, the study of receptive field codes has been of large interest to mathematicians. Here we give a complete characterization of receptive field codes realizable by connected receptive fields and we give the minimal embedding dimensions of these codes. In particular, we show that all connected codes are realizable in dimension at most 3. To our knowledge, this is the first family of receptive field codes for which the exact characterization and minimal embedding dimension is known.

On Gallai's conjecture for series-parallel graphs and planar 3-trees
A path cover is a decomposition of the edges of a graph into edge-disjoint simple paths. Gallai conjectured that every connected $n$-vertex graph has a path cover with at most $\lceil n/2 \rceil$ paths. We prove Gallai's conjecture for series-parallel graphs. For the class of planar 3-trees we show how to construct a path cover with at most $\lfloor 5n/8 \rfloor$ paths, which is an improvement over the best previously known bound of $\lfloor 2n/3 \rfloor$.
Chip-firing on trees of loops
Published • View Publication • BIB
Cools, Draisma, Payne, and Robeva proved that generic metric graphs that are "paths of loops" are Brill-Noether general. We show that Brill-Noether generality does not hold for "trees of loops": the only trees of loops that are Brill-Noether general are paths of loops. We study various notions of generality and examine which of these graphs satisfy them.

Triangles capturing many lattice points
Published in Mathematika 64 (2018) 551-582 • View Publication • BIB
We study a combinatorial problem that recently arose in the context of shape optimization: among all triangles with vertices $(0,0)$, $(x,0)$, and $(0,y)$ and fixed area, which one encloses the most lattice points from $\mathbb{Z}_{>0}^2$? Moreover, does its shape necessarily converge to the isosceles triangle $(x=y)$ as the area becomes large? Laugesen and Liu suggested that, in contrast to similar problems, there might not be a limiting shape. We prove that the limiting set is indeed nontrivial and contains infinitely many elements. We also show that there exist `bad' areas where no triangle is particularly good at capturing lattice points and show that there exists an infinite set of slopes $y/x$ such that any associated triangle captures more lattice points than any other fixed triangle for infinitely many (and arbitrarily large) areas; this set of slopes is a fractal subset of $[1/3, 3]$ and has Minkowski dimension at most $3/4$.
Star of David and other patterns in the Hosoya-like polynomials triangles
In this paper we first generalize the numerical recurrence relation given by Hosoya to polynomials. Using this generalization we construct a Hosoya-like triangle for polynomials, where its entries are products of generalized Fibonacci polynomials (GFP). Examples of GFP are: Fibonacci polynomials, Chebyshev polynomials, Morgan-Voyce polynomials, Lucas polynomials, Pell polynomials, Fermat polynomials, Jacobsthal polynomials, Vieta polynomials and other familiar sequences of polynomials. For every choice of a GFP we obtain a triangular array of polynomials. In this paper we extend the star of David property, also called the Hoggatt-Hansell identity, to this type of triangles. We also establish the star of David property in the gibonomial triangle. In addition, we study other geometric patterns in these triangles and as a consequence we give geometric interpretations for the Cassini's identity, Catalan's identity, and other identities for Fibonacci polynomials.
Turán numbers for Berge-hypergraphs and related extremal problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $F$ be a graph. We say that a hypergraph $H$ is a {\it Berge}-$F$ if there is a bijection $f : E(F) \rightarrow E(H )$ such that $e \subseteq f(e)$ for every $e \in E(F)$. Note that Berge-$F$ actually denotes a class of hypergraphs. The maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with no subhypergraph isomorphic to any Berge-$F$ is denoted $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$. In this paper we establish new upper and lower bounds on $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$ for general graphs $F$, and investigate connections between $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$ and other recently studied extremal functions for graphs and hypergraphs. One case of specific interest will be when $F = K_{s,t}$. Additionally, we prove a counting result for $r$-graphs of girth five that complements the asymptotic formula $\textup{ex}_3 (n , \textrm{Berge-}\{ C_2 , C_3 , C_4 \} ) = \frac{1}{6} n^{3/2} + o( n^{3/2} )$ of Lazebnik and Verstraëte [{\em Electron.\ J. of Combin}. {\bf 10}, (2003)].

Some restrictions on weight enumerators of singly even self-dual codes II
Published in Interdisciplinary Information Sciences Vol. 24, No. 1 (2018) 77-85 • View Publication • BIB
In this note, we give some restrictions on the number of vectors of weight $d/2+1$ in the shadow of a singly even self-dual $[n,n/2,d]$ code. This eliminates some of the possible weight enumerators of singly even self-dual $[n,n/2,d]$ codes for $(n,d)=(62,12)$, $(72,14)$, $(82,16)$, $(90,16)$ and $(100,18)$.

A lower bound theorem for centrally symmetric simplicial polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Stanley proved that for any centrally symmetric simplicial $d$-polytope $P$ with $d\geq 3$, $g_2(P) \geq {d \choose 2}-d$. We provide a characterization of centrally symmetric $d$-polytopes with $d\geq 4$ that satisfy this inequality as equality. This gives a natural generalization of the classical Lower Bound Theorem for simplicial polytopes to the setting of centrally symmetric simplicial polytopes.

Structural properties of subadditive families with applications to factorization theory
Published in Israel J. Math., Vol. 234, No. 1 (2019), 1-35 • View Publication • BIB
Let $H$ be a multiplicatively written monoid. Given $k\in{\bf N}^+$, we denote by $\mathscr U_k$ the set of all $\ell\in{\bf N}^+$ such that $a_1\cdots a_k=b_1\cdots b_\ell$ for some atoms $a_1,\ldots,a_k,b_1,\ldots,b_\ell\in H$. The sets $\mathscr U_k$ are one of the most fundamental invariants studied in the theory of non-unique factorization, and understanding their structure is a basic problem in the field: In particular, it is known that, in many cases of interest, these sets are almost arithmetic progressions with the same difference and bound for all large $k$, namely, $H$ satisfies the Structure Theorem for Unions. The present paper improves the current state of the art on this problem. More precisely, we show that, under mild assumptions on $H$, not only does the Structure Theorem for Unions hold, but there also exists $μ\in{\bf N}^+$ such that, for every $M\in{\bf N}$, the sequences $$ \bigl((\mathscr U_k-\inf\mathscr U_k)\cap[\![0,M]\!]\bigr)_{k\ge 1} \quad\text{and}\quad \bigl((\sup\mathscr U_k-\mathscr U_k)\cap[\![0,M]\!]\bigr)_{k\ge 1} $$ are $μ$-periodic from some point on. The result applies, e.g., to (the multiplicative monoid of) all commutative Krull domains (e.g., Dedekind domains) with finite class group; a variety of weakly Krull commutative domains (including all orders in number fields with finite elasticity); some maximal orders in central simple algebras over global fields; and all numerical monoids. Large parts of the proofs are worked out in a "purely additive model", by inquiring into the properties of what we call a subadditive family, i.e., a collection $\mathscr L$ of subsets of $\bf N$ such that, for all $L_1,L_2\in\mathscr L$, there is $L\in\mathscr L$ with $L_1+L_2\subseteq L$.

On the benchmark instances for the Bin Packing with Conflicts
Published • View Publication • BIB
Many authors, mainly in the context of the Bin Packing Problem with Conflicts, used the random graph generator proposed in "Heuristics and lower bounds for the bin packing problem with conflicts" [M. Gendreau, G. Laporte, and F. Semet, Computers & Operations Research, 31:347-358, 2004]. In this paper we prove that the graphs generated in this way are not arbitrary but threshold ones. Computational results show that instances with threshold conflict graphs are easier to solve w.r.t. instances with arbitrary conflict graphs.

50 Years of the Golomb--Welch Conjecture
Published in IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 64 (2018), no. 4, part 2, 3048--3061 • View Publication • BIB
Since 1968, when the Golomb--Welch conjecture was raised, it has become the main motive power behind the progress in the area of the perfect Lee codes. Although there is a vast literature on the topic and it is widely believed to be true, this conjecture is far from being solved. In this paper, we provide a survey of papers on the Golomb--Welch conjecture. Further, new results on Golomb--Welch conjecture dealing with perfect Lee codes of large radii are presented. Algebraic ways of tackling the conjecture in the future are discussed as well. Finally, a brief survey of research inspired by the conjecture is given.
